I tried to open my eyes, but a heavy sensation weighed them down, preventing me from doing so. It felt as though I was confined within my own body, unable to move. I struggled again, but it was all in vain.
When I managed to blink them open, the rays of the sun coming from the window made me regret my decision, and I hurriedly shut them closed.
I wasn’t one to give up, so I tried again, squinting my eyes to reduce the light, but it only brought more discomfort.
My senses were dulled, as if I were submerged in a pool of water, unable to escape its grasp. My throat hurt as I tried to take a deep breath, and a weak cough left me, but even that was enough to leave me drained and tired.
I tried to turn my head around to figure out where I was, but that was a horrible mistake because pain flared up from every part of my body.
It triggered the machine because it began to go off, blaring warning sounds, and I cringed. The noise was too much for me to bear.
I was too lost trying to get the noise to stop when I heard a faint shuffling and a chair creak. I could hear footsteps approaching, and without warning, there was a figure leaning over me.
My thoughts were muddled from whatever they had given me, and I couldn’t exactly think well, but everything in me could tell that this man in front of me was handsome.
I tried to focus my weak eyes on him, but it was more than I could handle, and I settled for his clothes.
He was dressed in a dark suit, although I couldn’t tell if it was black or dark blue. But it fit him well. I returned my gaze to his mouth to see that it had been moving all this time.
My face must have given it away because his mouth stopped moving and he looked at me. “I think it is better I call a nurse.” I thought I heard him say. I wasn’t sure because my brain was still muddled. But one thing I was sure of was his charming smile.
The blurry handsome man moved away from the bed, the smile never leaving his lips, and I was drawn to it.
It didn’t take long before I saw people coming towards me wearing white. And then it came to me.
I was in the hospital.
“Hello dear?” A nurse said in a calm voice that it would have annoyed me if I were myself. “It is good to have you back.” She said, flashing a smile that was more businesslike than friendly, and it took everything not to slap it off her face.
“Hmm.” I managed to moan weakly when pain spread to my arms.
“Sorry about that.” The nurse from earlier said, “I am Nurse Bella, and these are my colleagues. We are just going to check your vitals, and I will ask you some questions. Blink once for a yes and twice for a no, is that alright?"
There was something within me that had problems following the rules. Rules were meant to be broken, and I have made it my life mission to break rules. But this was important, so I blinked once.
“Good.” The nurse said, her smile widening into a genuine one, that this time I didn’t want to barf. “Can you remember your name?”
My name? What sort of question is that? I was offended that that was what she wanted to ask me. My name is...
I was blank. No matter how I tried to rack my brain, I was met with a blank wall, making my forehead flare in pain.
“It is alright.” Nurse Bella said, squeezing my arms gently. “You don’t have to try so hard. If you can’t remember, just blink twice.”
I blinked twice, and she took note of it.
“Do you know where you are?" She continued, and this time I knew the answer, so I blinked twice, and she smiled. “Do you know how you got here?”
I tried to rack my brain, but none seemed to come to mind, so I blinked twice, and she noted it down. The question took a while, and I had begun to grow tired, plus my eyes were hurting as I was still getting used to the environment.
“Thank you for your patience. Be rest assured, you are in safe hands.” She didn’t finish talking before I felt another prick in my hand, and I was floating in the sky.
I slept, and this time the sleep was peaceful, but when I woke up, it was nothingness.
I blinked my eyes open, relieved that the pain was gone and I could see better. I shifted my head from side to side, trying to familiarize myself with the environment.
I tried to raise my hands, but they were connected to different wires hooked to a machine, all connected to my body. There was no one around me, so I guess the room should be a private one. Apart from the machines and equipment, the room was empty, save for the wilting flower beside the window.
“How did I get here?” This was the question that had been on my lips, and I could feel the answers at my tips, but they were refusing to come forth.
There was nothing I hated more than being kept in the dark. I hated being ignorant, and staying here with no one beside me to even tell me things was making me get angrier as the seconds rolled by.
“Think, you. Fucking think!” I whispered/yelled as best as I could with my feeble voice. But it ended up sounding like a voice that had been in the Sahara desert and haven't gotten any water.
Which wasn’t exactly a lie.
I raised my hands to hit my head in hopes that it would reboot it, but it was the wrong move because my hands were weak, and they hit the bed with a thud that had the needle shifting, and I let out a silent scream as pain developed in the area.
“Fuck!” I cursed weakly, regretting my actions almost immediately. I tried to clutch my hands to soothe the pain, but it was long forgotten because everything in me went numb as images began to flash in front of me.
Ruby. The name was flashing in bold signs in front of me. Images of my life were playing like someone had been recording every day of my life, and I could feel my memories coming back.
I remembered who I was and how I landed here.
I was Ruby, a too-grown orphan who was in a foster home, but I was too broke and scared to move out. I had made a deal with my foster parents that if they continued to house me, I wasn’t going to bother them with anything. Ruby was what everyone knew as a daredevil, and I always wanted to experience life and have fun.
But it turned out to be my downfall. The last thing I could remember was skating through a very steep path, and I was going to perform a stunt I had been learning, but unfortunately, it took a dark turn, and I missed my steps.
All I could remember was that I was lying down in the pool of my blood, and somehow I had found myself in the hospital.
The creaking door disrupted my thoughts, and I turned my head to see the man who had walked in. He was still adorned in his suit, which makes me think of those rich men who live and breathe in their suits.
“Hello dear? How are you feeling?” He said as he came close to me. While I appreciated the fact that a handsome man was talking to me, my danger alert was going haywire.
I just woke up from what should be a coma, and there were no familiar faces around me, so I had every reason to be wary.
“Where are my parents?” I only called Gene and Stella's parents when we were outside because they would develop a fit if I said anything but. But they were far from being parents.
Even though I see them as a parental figure, right now, their presence would do me a lot of good.
“It is alright, love.” The strange, handsome man said. His smile would have made me have butterflies if I wasn’t too concerned about my safety. “I have informed the nurses that you are awake, and they should be here anytime soon.”
A little sigh of relief left me as I heard the information. Maybe he wasn’t as evil as I had thought him to be. I heard footsteps retreating, and I looked up to see that the handsome stranger had made himself comfortable on the sofa.
I found the action strange, if you ask me. I wasn’t one to beat about the bush, so I asked right away.
“What are you doing here?” He looked up from his phone, his eyebrows titling upwards as if in shock.
“I am watching over you.” He replied and went back to his phone. I dismissed the idea, taking him to be my caretaker. But the warning bells in my head were ringing.
Caretakers don’t wear fancy suits with even fancier shoes or call their patients love, and frankly, if he were a caretaker, then I would have been looking in the wrong place.
So I tried again, but I shouldn’t have because that statement changed my life.
“Who are you?” I asked and his mouth widened in a smile that would forever taunt me.
“Why love? I am your husband-to-be.”

Staying in the hospital for so long has a negative side effect; it must have affected my hearing because there was no way I just heard what he said. “Excuse me?” I tried to bark, but it ended up coming out like a plea. Have I mentioned I hate hospitals? Because I hate them so much. But anyway, back to the situation at hand. “What did you just say?” “You have been betrothed to me, and once you are out of the hospital and strong enough, we will begin to make plans for the wedding.” I looked at him like he had grown two heads, refusing to believe what he was spilling from his mouth. With the little strength I had in me, I glared at him, letting him know that I wasn’t going to believe any of that shit. “Alright, you can come out now. The surprise is over.” I said to whatever camera crew was filming this shitty excuse of a surprise. “Hahaha, very funny.” I said, but I wasn’t finding it funny at all. If someone doesn’t tell me what was going on here, I'm going to lose it. I was about
I laid back on the bed, releasing a sigh of relief now that they were gone. I needed the space to think and put things in order. But that was going to wait for a while because I had exhausted myself talking to my ‘family’ and I could feel the cold wind of sleep blowing across the room.It didn’t take long before I answered the call, and I was already fast asleep.I woke up after a while, feeling lifeless. There was no one in the room; even my foster siblings hadn’t come to see me.I know I wasn’t particularly sunny, but no one deserved to be alone, especially confined to a sick bed.But all that was quieted when the door gave way to the nurse from earlier. I think she was Bella or something. She was in her regular clothes, and now that I was clear headed, I could say that she is a beauty.“Hello, Ruby. It is nice to see you awake.”“Thank you.” I replied, and my gaze fell back to her clothing. She was in a black sweater and washed mom jeans, but she managed to look good. “Oh yea. It i
“Excuse me?” I said, regaining my strength, and I was going to make sure he knew how I felt.Alexander released a sigh, his eyes glancing at the watch on his wrist. “I don’t have time for this, Ruby. You were already aware of the recent developments. You are to be my wife, so you have to start living there.”"No, that is not going to happen. Not under my watch." I don’t care if I sounded childish, but I wasn’t going to follow him home. “I am not following you home; I didn’t sign my name in any contract, so it doesn’t hold.”“I don’t have time for this.” He said under his breath, and with a snap of his fingers, people began to come in. They were all dressed in black, like they were in a cult, and I shifted to the wall, trying to defend myself. The men marched into the room, taking up my personal effects, and began to haul them out.“You can’t do this. It is against the law.” I threatened, clutching my pillow for defense, but he simply looked at me and smiled. And for the first time, I
“What are you trying to do, Alex?” I asked, inching backwards till I hit the pillows, and I grabbed them for support. “Don’t do this, Alex.” My heart was pounding fast behind my rib cage.“What am I doing?” He asked, his lips curling in a smirk. “I was just trying to get my box.” He said, stretching his hands and grabbing the cufflink case on the bed.I looked at him with wide eyes, grateful that he hadn’t done anything to me. I shifted toward the edge of the bed and stood up. I needed to feel like I was in control, and standing up worked.“Where would I be sleeping?" I asked him, and he looked at me like I had gone crazy.“The bed is big enough for both of us, and I promise I don’t snore, so you are good to go.” My eyebrows shot up, looking at him like he was a joke.“You must be joking.” But he didn’t reply; instead, he continued working his buttons until the last one popped out.I watched, trying to act nonchalant as he removed his clothes. He was putting on a white singlet, but he
I held my clothes to my body as I ran, praying he didn’t have any domestic staff around; otherwise, they would just get a free view of their employer’s wife's naked buttocks.I ran, even though I didn’t know where I was going. All I knew was that I needed to be away from him before I did something crazy.I stopped at the first door that looked like it would lead to a room, and I opened it, praying it wasn’t leading to a secret lair. It wouldn’t be bad, though; I could just get away with some money. Lord knows I needed them. But my instincts were right, and it was a room.I went inside, bolting the door so he couldn’t come in even if he wanted to. And I laid my head on the door, running through the last few minutes in my mind.My thighs were still sticky with my cum, and my nipples still ached from his mouth.“Fuck!” I screamed in the empty room. “Was it wrong with you? You just had to throw yourself at him like some hoe.”I was the one telling him that I didn’t want this wedding, but
“Hands off my man.” I said in a cold, chilling voice that the woman was dropping her hands off him like she had touched hot coal.“Woaw. My bad, I had no idea he was taken.” She said raising her hands in surrender to show that she meant no harm.“Easy there, Tiger,” Alex said, his hands wrapping around my waist and drawing me closer to him. "Cassandra here is my cousin, and we stumbled into each other in the mall. She just came to say hello.”“Oh.” My voice was low and small as I felt color rush to my face. “I’m sorry about that.” I apologized, stretching my hand for a handshake. She took my hands, and I looked down at her well-manicured fingers, a far cry from mine, and my cheeks were aflame. Her palms were so soft, like she had never been exposed to menial jobs before, while mine were nothing to write home about.“It is fine; I know what it is like when you are in love. Trust me, I would be like that with any girl I catch around my man.” She said it with an eye roll, and I chuckled.
I didn’t know what got to me; maybe it was curiosity, but I lowered myself to my knees and let my hands rest on the fly of his pants.“Open it.” Alex instructed in a husky voice, so authoritative that I was opening the zip of his pants. I didn’t need any other instructions because I reached inside his pants and held his member. The organ jerked in my hand, and I smiled, looking up at him through my lashes. “You like it that much.”“Shut up and suck.” He growled at me; his fingers were in my hair, weaving his hands through it. I pulled out the cock in my hands and looked at it, my mouth slightly opening in anticipation. He was already hard, and the head jutted forward with a bead of pre-cum on it. I reached a finger and rubbed the sticky fluid over the bulbous head, loving his sharp intake of breath. My other hands enveloped his thick length, so smooth yet so hard and veiny. He was a solid 6 inches, and he made up the rest in girth.I looked at it intently, conveying my desires through
“Hey baby. I have missed you.” My warning bells in my ear rang as I heard the words come out of her slimy mouth. I stood there stunned, watching as the event unfolded before my eyes. But I wasn’t surprised; I knew I could never trust Alex. I mean, who just pays for the bills of a coma patient just because he wants to marry her?I just knew it; he was too good to be true, and if I had listened to my instinct and ran away the first time he uttered those words, I wouldn’t be in this position. I scrunched my face into a frown and folded my arms, trying but failing to prove that I wasn’t affected by her words. But my mind was already racing, thinking about where I would go from here. I didn’t have any place to stay if she decided she was coming home with him, and I didn’t want to be his second wife, nor did I want to be hearing her moans as he fucked her.I shuddered just as the thought crossed my mind. It was never going to happen, and I wouldn’t be there when it did.I heard Alex release
Honestly, this wasn’t how I imagined the book to end. I still had a lot of ideas, but as I gave it some thought, I knew that I was dragging the plot unnecessarily, and I think Alex and Ruby deserve their happy ending after all they had been through, even though it may not be what you wished for.I have learned that sometimes less is more, and that is what I am looking for in this book.Their future is left for you readers to decide, so be creative and leave a message on how you think they should have ended, and I would be happy to contribute and add my own theory.I want to thank everyone that has been reading the book even up to this point; you are the reason I kept this going.Your comments and gems were really appreciated.I do have a tiny favor for you. If you enjoyed reading this book or have read it to this point, you could click on the three lines at the bottom left of the screen, click on book details, and leave a rating for the book. You can also look forward to my future pro
I stood on my tiptoes, and my hands flew up to circle his neck, even as I connected my lips to his. Alex was frozen in place, not expecting my reaction, but the man was quick to recover.I heard a low growl from his belly, and he held my neck, pulling me closer to him. His lips were firm as they pressed against me, the complete opposite of the gentle butterflies that were fluttering in my stomach.Alex pulled back for a split second, his warm breath fanning my skin and sending delicious tingles down my body. He was looking at me with stormy eyes, and I could see nothing but love in his gaze.“Before we go forward, I need your verbal response. I don’t want to have any casual relationships anymore. I am tired of chasing the clouds, and I want something authentic with you. If you are saying yes, that means you are all in.” His eyebrow creased with serious intent as he spoke.I gave it a little thought, even though I already knew what my reply would be. In all honesty, I was tired of this
I looked at my phone, squinting at the mail I had just received, just to be sure that it was actually from Alex. Why couldn’t he tell me if they had accepted or rejected our offer in the mail? Did he have to see me face-to-face so he could gloat at my dejected face?He didn’t even give a specific date, so he had expected me to be omniscient and know when I should come. I looked up at the top left-hand corner of my phone, where the time was reading some minutes before one.A flitting thought crossed my mind about how it was so close to time. It took me some seconds to process the information before I was jumping to my feet.He obviously meant today, and if he did, I needed to be extra fast to make it on time. Thank goodness for the little things. I had already taken my bath, so it was going to make things easier.I padded my wardrobe, which was only seen to be overflowing no matter how much I debunk and declutter. I think I was going to have another yard sale so I could create more spa
“Hmm.” Alex’s lips were in a thin line as he looked at me. He finally allowed our eyes to meet, and I wasn’t sure I liked what I was seeing there. They were unreadable and barely giving anything out, and honestly, I didn’t know how to feel about that. But I could feel the huge divide between us, and I had no idea how I was going to mend it.“Alex? I asked a question.” I reminded him when I got no response again.“Yeah, I heard you the first time; I was just wondering why you decided to come to me.” He folded his arms, and I watched as his muscles bulged, giving him a menacing look. But I wasn’t fazed. “Why are you coming to me? What happened to all the numerous investors that gave you the contract? Are they suddenly backing out of the contract?”I whined with each sentence, each sentence delivering a lash on my back, and I shifted in my seat uncomfortably. Alex sure had a way with words, and he knew how best to make it hurt.“I came to you for a reason, Alex.” I said while I practiced
“Hey, I need your help.” I said into the speaker, and I waited, unconsciously holding my breath, to hear his reply. A few seconds had passed, and I didn’t hear anything from him. I was sure he heard me, but I was going to repeat it again to clarify any doubt. “I need your help.”“Yes, I heard you for the first time. What do you need?” No matter how he tried, he couldn’t hide the hostility in his voice, and I was cringing as I heard it.I deserved it. I had hurt him beyond measure, yet I was the one on his phone, seeking his favor.“Uhm, it is a long story, but I think it is better if we meet in person.” I said, my heart pounding in my chest for no apparent reason.I heard the ruffling of pages and a small pause before he replied. “Alright, tomorrow should be fine with me by 6 p.m. I will send you the location.”“Alright, thank you.” He was disconnecting the call even before I even finished talking, and I looked at the blank screen for a moment, wondering where it had all gone wrong.I
“We need to talk.” I spoke into the speaker, and I didn’t care if he had heard me or not, but I disconnected the call and flung my phone on the bed—only carefully, of course. That particular phone had cost me a ton, and I didn’t think I had the strength to replace it just yet. Plus, all of my important information was there; I couldn’t afford to lose it because of a tantrum.I held my head in my hand, cradling it like I would a baby. I wanted to scream out my frustration, bang my head on the wall, or do something crazy. But I couldn’t find the strength to do so.I have never been one to resort to violence if I didn’t have my way. Okay? I was lying, I used to in the past, but I'm a changed person now, and I don’t do such things now.I sat on my bed, unmoving, while I waited for the person on the other end of the phone to come back home. All this time, I was numb, not allowing myself to feel anything, but my brain was still working on how to come up with a solution.I was snapping out o
Work began in earnest the next day, which means that we were going to be staying in New York for a great deal of time—well, only Jeremy and I.Charles and Anna had gone back to Seattle as they had a lot of things to do and couldn’t always be here for us.However, I understood how much of a sacrifice they had made to make us reach such levels, and I was never taking it for granted. That was why I was eager to make sure this project was a success. It had to beJeremy and I had rented an Airbnb that would accommodate us during our stay in New York. Nothing fancy though; it was a modest house with 3 bedrooms and well-furnished rooms, and it had all the essentials we needed. We had decided on a 3-bedroom in case we had visitors; they could always stay in the guest bedroom without having to inconvenience anyone. I flew back to Seattle during the weekend just to check on how things were going over there while Jeremy was holding out his end in New York.We had no ongoing project anymore in Se
I held my breath as I opened the door, but I realized too late that it wasn’t him. It wasn’t the one that I dreamed of every waking hour, the one that somehow found a way to occupy my thoughts even though I didn’t want him to.Anna was quick to notice the frown on my face, and frown lines were etched on her face. “Are we interrupting something?” She asked in a worrisome tone, and I was quick to shake my head, denying her claim.“No, of course not. It is fine; please come in.” I said, moving out of the door so she could enter inside. “I had just woken up not so long ago, and it wasn’t to good news.”“Yeah, about that.” She began entering the room and taking up the empty space on the sofa while her husband sat on the only chair that was in the room. “We heard, or rather saw, what happened, and we just wanted to check on you.”“Yeah, Jeremy was just telling me about it, but it is pretty much under control.” I said, shrugging my shoulders. There was no need to start remembering the hurtfu
“What have you done?” Jeremy yelled as he entered my room. I was taken aback by the outburst, and my eyebrows rose in question.“I don’t understand. What happened?” I asked, confusion written all over my face. I had just woken up from a sweet, albeit short, nap, and I was still trying to get my bearings. There was no way I would have done something between those times, except I had a Dopplerganger somewhere who was wreaking havoc when I was sleeping.Thinking of it, if I had a dopplerganger somewhere, I would want to meet with her; maybe we could exchange jobs or something.“Don’t try to play ignorant about this; your face is literally plastered all over the internet.” Jeremy barked, cutting into my thoughts.“Ohkayyy…” I dragged out the words as I was still trying to recall what bad I had done. “I mean, it should be a good thing, right? Some exposure means more opportunities.”Jeremy looked at me. His jaw was hanging low, like he couldn’t believe what I had just said, and I was even m
