Life had been good until she had to leave home because of what those f*ckers did. She lived for the day she would make them bow at her feet. It might take her long but she was going to make sure that one day, she would get there.

She stretched her bones and she could feel them crackling and she winced because it was kinda painful. She took her small watch, that didn't even have a strap, and looked at the time and it was only five in the morning. She would have wanted to sleep a little bit more but what with the hunger? It was her aching stomach that woke her up. She knew she wasn't sick, it was all because she hadn't eaten anything in the last twenty four hours or so. And she still had no idea where she would get her next meal from.

She didn't regret her situation though. Here, in these slums, she was better off than that place that she called home. She stretched again and rose up from the mat she used to call a bed and went to relieve herself in the small shack that they called a latrine. It was even shared. Hygiene here was a foreign word because how do you keep one small latrine that is used by more than a hundred people clean? It was hard. She walked in the cold towards the latrine as she shivered. She knew she was malnourished but what to do? She ran and did her business and returned to her small shack. At least it was warmer here as compared to the outside.

She looked around the small one roomed shack that she called a house. It was made of old rusty ironsheets and old falling timber. It seemed like ants had done their fare share. It was around six feet by eight. At the right hand corner after entering, there was a small mat that she slept on. She didn't have any blankets and only used an old bed sheet and some of her heavy clothes as bedding. Then she had a small paraffin stove, two plastic plates, two small saucer pans and one plastic basin. That was all that she owned. She knew that she lived below the poverty line but at least here she had peace of mind.

She looked around that room and she didn't have anything to eat. The only thing in that house was a small pinch of salt and she laughed at the irony of it all. Her situation was literally what one would call 'from grace to grass'. Or was there any difference really. Maybe here, where she had nothing, was a greener grass than that place where she came from.

She was sure by now, the servants in her parent's house were already up preparing a sumptuous breakfast for her father, mother, sister and brother. A tear streamed down her beautiful cheeks even without her noticing. It was all so ironical that her, the legitimate daughter of that family, was living in abject poverty while even a servant enjoyed more privileges than she did.

She decided to walk around the Sava slums this early because she might be lucky enough to find work. Even if it was cleaning. It would go a long way to at least give her a few coins to buy something to eat. She freshened up quickly, wore the only decent dress she had, put on a hoodie and walked out. She used her small padlock to lock the door and then walked out of the small rusty gate that she and other tenants shared.

She could have left her door unlocked but she didn't want to lose the little she had. She knew that it wasn't much but here in the slums, the smallest of things mattered. Her academic documents were in that house too and she needed them to be safe for the day she will get enough money to go back to school. Yes, she believed that one day, she will be able to continue with her education and make her life better. She knew and believed that one day, she will prove all those who laughed at her wrong. She was determined to make something out of herself. She would do it.

She was a beautiful girl. She had red hair, smooth skin that looked like a China doll, a gap on her front teeth (that was rare by the way because no one in her family had that), a nose that perfectly alighted her symmetrical face and eyes that looked like they could see through to your soul when she looked at you. Her smile... Her smile gave the sun competition. Many a time she had caught people staring, both male and female, even without her trying. Too bad that she didn't know the effect she had on people. She believed that everyone was beautiful in their own way. Little did she know that in this world, beauty ran some sectors. For a twenty year old girl, she wasn't short. She was around five seven and that for a girl was enough.

In simple words, She was an epitome of beauty. Too bad she wasn't aware of that fact.

She walked for a while and then saw a group of women and other girls like her. They were all here to try their luck. Every morning they met here so as to wait for those rich ladies who came to choose the people they wanted to work in their households for a day. It didn't pay much. One would be given at most five hundred Xela coins. It was little but it was enough for these people. It would at least afford a few things like a quarter kilo of sugar, ten grams tea leaves, one kilogram of vegetables, a kilo of rice and a half a liter of paraffin. If she got one today, she was sure she would be sorted for this week before she starts worrying about the one thousand coins rent she would be owing by next week.

Denise Ashford, that was her given name, had never thought that she would ever find herself in these situations. But it was life, wasn't it?

As they were standing there having small talk and gossip about the latest in the slums of Sava, a young girl came running and called Denise.

"Denise, mama is asking if you will work at the hotel today? One of her workers called in sick." The little girl asked and Denise smiled. She didn't even mind that the girl pronounced her name wrongly because she just gave her good news. Talk of good luck. She could hear the other women and girls talk with envy but today was her lucky day.

She left with the little girl and the reason why she was happy was because working at this woman's hotel for a day would give her a thousand, and food. She thanked her stars and decided to go do her best. Oh yes, at least she would be given breakfast.

That's how she spent that day. She was a happy girl by the time she went back to her small house. She was very very tired but she was happy because tomorrow, she would also work there. At least she could save on food and thus be able to pay her rent on time.

The last thing she needed was that man they called their caretaker to come and start harassing her asking for money.

She remembered one month when she was new here and he came knocking on her door very early in the morning. When she was unable to pay, he locked her door and told her he wouldn't open until she paid. She slept in the pavement for two whole days before she could raise that little amount.

She slept with a smile that night hoping for better days. Yes, she hoped that tomorrow would be better.

Denise worked with a spring to her step. It would seem stupid or even weird to another person but she was happy. Getting a job in these slums was a plus because it meant that tomorrow would be sorted. In fact, since she wasn't a worker here, she had been given menial jobs like washing utensils, cleaning and running errands. But did she mind? No. In fact, compared to how she lived in that mansion she used to call home, this was easy peazy for her. She was also happy because she knew that in the three days that the person she was standing in for was going to be away, she would make more than she would ever have cleaning clothes for a week. That's all that mattered: making money. She did her usual cleaning very quickly and had a few minutes rest before she would be called in for more utensils. As she was resting, she saw the previous day's newspaper and she decided to browse through it. As she was reading, she saw an advert about an acting company that was promoting new talent. They wa

If only there was a button for success.... maybe then Denise would have turned it on but here she was.... alone and striving to become better. Denise looked at the script that she had been given and sighed for the a hundredth time. It was a movie that Diamond Studios was going to produce with newcomers only and it wasn't going to be easy she knew that among the newcomers, there would be those who had connections and they would have a direct ticket to the movie. And here she was, without anyone to even read the script with her. She hoped that it was true what people said that among all the entertainment houses in the country, Diamond Studios was among the most upright. It was rumoured that Diamond Studios never looked at one's background or who they knew in the industry. If you didn't have talent, then no one would consider you in there regardless of who you were. It was said that the president and CEO of the studio was a man who had worked his way from the bottom and he knew the stru

Denise Ashford, twenty years old, born to Mr and Mrs Gresham Ashford. The Ashfords were among the most influential families in Xela. That's how much power they held especially in the political arena of Xela.Denise was the second child, the first born being the twins George and Georgina Ashford. They were older than her by two years. From the moment Denise learnt how to crawl when she was a toddler, she could tell that she wasn't loved by her family. Her upbringing was left to the servants and she can't ever remember her mother holding her. Her father never talked to her and he would always treat her like an invisible thing. He never acknowledged her. Her two siblings were something else. They never gave her the time of the day. What they did best was beat and bully her whenever they got the chance. The three went to the sames schools but they made Denise know that she wa

Caleb held young Denise down and started undressing her. She didn't shed any tears as she had learnt from an early age that shedding tears didn't solve anything. It would just rile up her emotions and she needed to be sober as she thought of what to do next before Caleb actualised his evil plan. Yes he was stronger than her but she had to use her brain. Then an idea came to her. She always kept a pocket knife under her pillow because she wanted to be ready if ever her siblings did what they always promised. They always told her that no one loved her and that they would kill her the first chance they got, especially Georgina. She thus had to be ready just in case they thought of killing her. Denise reached under her pillow but Caleb didn't notice as he was occupied with raising her dress up above her knees and holding her legs that were trying to kick him in place. After she got the knife she raised her hand and stabbed him on the shoulder. She caught him unawares and he screamed inp

There is nnothing bad in this life than realising that what you thought was true wasn't. Someone feels played and they feel that life is a scam. This is what these men experienced. With the mentality that woman and girls are weak, it came as a surprise to see one girl beat them senseless. After the kicks she had given them, those men realised that she wasn't as fragile as they thought. They thus stood and surrounded her although the one who was elbowed in the spine was still trying to flex his back which was still painful. The one who was holding the knife attacked first. He swiped at her from her left and she bent backwards. She then held the hand that was holding the knife at the wrist and twisted. The man shouted in pain and let go of the knife. Denise took it mid air and let go of his hand. She then bent on one knee and stabbed his thigh. She did all these so gracefully that if one saw her, they would have thought that she was practicing a dance move. All this took less than ten

For almost ten years since her grandfather died, Denise had lived worse than a maid in that house she was supposed to call home. It was worse than the help because at least those were paid and had leave days. But for her, she worked even when she was sick. She just thanked her guardian angel as she rarely fell sick. What her family members didn't know was that she was living a double life. Since she had to hide and play hide and seek with her parents and siblings so as to minimise how much they saw each other, they thus didn't know her schedule. They thought that whenever they didn't see her around that she was somewhere in the big mansion doing what she was supposed to be doing: working her arse off for them. But after school, where she had joined the taekwondo and karate club, she went to a dojo where she had also enrolled for classes in a not so near distance from the estate where they lived. Since her father was a very well known man in the political and business arena of Xela, he

Georgina stood there gaping at Denise like she had seen Angel Lucifer in person. She couldn't just believe that the dumb girl they had bullied since they were born was talking back at her. She did the only logical thing she could have done at that moment, according to her: raised her hand and made to slap Denise. But like Denise had decided; she had seen and taken enough.in this house and it was enough. She raised her hand and held Georgina's. She couldn't let herself get slapped. Not anymore. She was through with that. The only reason she had allowed them to beat her however they wanted was because she was young and didn't know where she would go if she ever left home. But now that her father had refused to take her to theUniversity despite her good grades, she had nothing to lose. It's time she taught them a lesson they will never forget."How dare you!" Georgina screamed as she tried to take her hand from Denise's hold but she found that she couldn't. He continued but his wife pulled his hand as if asking him not to say anything."You want to know why I call you an abomination? I will tell you," he hissed but one again, his wife pulled his hand."Darling. Please don't. Just punish her for beating our children," she whispered but Denise heard her clearly."Why shouldn't he tell me? Don't you think I deserve the truth? Just tell me!" What that meant was that they both were clumsy in their actions but they were both really determined to make it memorable. Denise had never done this again but she didn't just want it to be like any other night for Ansel. She wanted it to be something that would be remembered by this man for a long long time to come. After that kiss, she excused herself to go to the bathroom and Ansel did just that. He was already aroused and if Denise was experienced enough, she could have told from the way his eyes clouded with desire. But she didn't and thus she couldn't tell. All that was on her mind was to make this night special and Ansel was also happy she chose to go to the bathroom at that time because he was feeling like his boner would explode from all the ne

When Denise got out of the bath and wore her night clothes, food was already waiting for her on the small table in their bedroom. She looked at the arrangement and wondered whether Ansel had been sent by someone to torture her heart. He had already done enough but he never got tired of doing things for her. He never got tired of taking care of her and that really made her heart warm. This was a brand new feeling for her and she loved it. She also wanted to experience that feeling for the rest of her life. What Denise didn't know was that to Ansel, he didn't think that he had done anything special for her. To him, this was the normal treatment one should give to the person he cares about let alone the one he loves. But to Denise, who had never experienced any kind of care at all in her whole life, this was humongous. She appreciated every little thing he did because she knew what it was like to lack. She thus appreciated him big time for what he was doing for her no matter how minimal.

Denise slept for the better part of the afternoon into the late evening. All this time, Ansel was sitting there like a faithful dog waiting for her to wake up. She had requested him to be by his side and he was going to honour that promise even if it meant not going back to work. For Denise, he was ready to work overtime for the hours he would miss. He also loved being near her and seeing her this peaceful as she slept like a baby actually made him feel peaceful in his heart. Her abduction had really shaken him and he had to be here to make sure that it was true that she was here and safe.During the time that she was asleep, he had taken a shower and asked the butler to prepare light foods for her for when she woke up. He was sure that she would wake up famished since she had missed lunch. He was thus ready.Denise had the best dream she has had in her entire life. He wanted to stay with her to reassure his troubled heart.Denise sat there obediently like a school girl holding onto her bags. She didn't want to talk because she knew that her emotions were allover and she didn't want to annoy the man who sat there looking at the road. She just felt so happy and grateful that she had this man in her life. Denise had never been this emotional and she felt embarrassed about it and she didn't want to embarrass herself more than she already had."A penny for your thoughts," Ansel said bringing her back from her stupor. She turned and looked at him but lacked words to tell him. At the same time that Denise was settling scores with Mandy and her goons, Ansel was going crazy looking for her. It was after thirty minutes that one of thebodyguards who took the driver to the hospital called Kai and told them that the driver was conscious now and had told him something. The vehicle had a GPS tracker and it was on when he was carjacked and beaten and he didn't think that the kidnappers knew about it.This was the breakthrough they had been waiting and praying for. Ansel had really prayed even though it was a long time since he had.Immediately Kai was told this, they sent the information to their IT guru and within minutes, he had the location of the vehicle. He immediately sent it to Kai and Ansel and his men immediately drove towards thatarea. It was a run down building where there was no sign of life and what gave them hope was when they found the taxi and another car parked next to it. Denise looked at Mandy and wondered why and where all the hatred came from. She didn't know the other woman and she really didn't think that even if it was a grudge because of taking Ansel or humiliating her the other day, it warranted her asking her people to kill her."Why do you hate me so much first of all? Do we know each other from somewhere?" Denise asked Mandy because she thought all this crazy. How can one hate someone else out of their own delusions? It wasn't normal. But she needed to hear it from Mandy herself because maybe she had a reason."Do I have any reason to hate you? You took my man away from me. Isn't that reason enough? I hate your very guts!" Mandy said through gritted teeth but Denise just looked at her with pity in her eyes. Really? Did Mandy just call Ansel her man?"Has Ansel ever told you that he loves you or has he ever given you any reason to believe that he does? Has he ever behaved in a way to suggest that he mightwant you?" Denise asked her again,

Denise had known that marrying Ansel would come with its own troubles but she didn't expect it to come so soon. She should have expected that there were people who were in love with Ansel in his own home but she never suspected that any of them would go as far as trying to take her life. But it was okay, they were giving her the experience she needed to live in this world that she had found herself in. She loved Ansel and she was ready to fight for him… literally. She sat on the couch again but her heart was still aching. Every time she would look at the bag that had been holding the food she had bought for Ansel and then think of how these fools had eaten it, she would feel so bad that she would feel better after beating them again. This time, even the guy who had been shot was no exception. They were beaten so badly that they could not speak well because their lips were the sizes of sausages. On the other side of the town, Ansel was going mad as his people tried tracking that taxi

They sat on the floor in a line like obedient school children and faced her.
