Marietta did this three times and finally arrived at the most unlikely answer. "I-Is it Carrie?"

"Yes," Kirk answered calmly.

On the other end of the phone, Marietta's eyes widened in surprise. "What? Carrie is your wife?"

Kirk waited for Marietta to calm down before speaking. "Yes, she is."

"Hang on. What's going on here?" Marietta was so curious that she wanted to head over there and ask for details.

Kirk sat down on the chair. "It's a long story, so I'll tell you when we have the time. I called you to ask you for a favor."

"What is it?"

"Carrie doesn't know my identity, so I hope you can help me keep my secret when you visit today."

Marietta gently rested her head on the headboard. She said, "Matthew, you're making this difficult for me. You know me—I'm an awful liar."
