“Lucas! That smells like him,” said Trisha.

“Nah, that has an EBEE stench,” said Eva, sniffing the air. “Only Blue has officially been sent here. The smell purge probably was just in case I’d be here, but I agree with her, this looks like a setup. In the middle of a human town like that, either they want to force her to expose herself to humans to solve the case… or they hope to be able to take her out alone when she searches for the missing people.”

“Last year, some elders at the EBEE worked with Lucas to take down my family, but they failed. I think the setup isn’t just against Blue, it’s also to expose us. Why else would they leave corpses drained of blood for humans to find?” said Veronica.

“All right, so we will solve this case the old-fashioned way and talk in code between us when town folks are around,” said Coralis, her hand on the door handle. “Here is what we will do. We will go next door to confirm our theory, and then we check on the corpses. We will d

June 8, 2003 – 16:45They chuckled as they got deeper into the forest. The scent trail led them to a clearing and a hunter’s cabin at the back of it.They saw five goblins playing cards outside of the cabin. Coralis, Veronica and Eva stood behind the tree line and watched the goblins for a minute.“If the vampires involved don’t have a daylight bracelet, they won’t stick their nose outside. We each kill one goblin, tie up the other two and we then go into the cabin,” said Veronica. They bumped each other’s fists and walked toward the goblins. As soon as they saw the trio approaching, the goblins stood up, accidentally reversing the card table.Without stopping nor saying a word, Coralis and Veronica unsheathed their swords and Eva pulled out her knife. The goblins walked toward them.“What are you doing here? You aren’t supposed to be here,” said one of them. The women quickly beheaded three of his companions and Veronica got behind him, grabbed his wrists and pushed him down. Coralis

July 20, 2003Despite going to bed in the middle of the night following the celebrations of winning the Silver Cup, once again, Coralis woke up early. She hoped she wouldn’t get called by the EBEE to go on a case. She knew Frank would be working all day, so she agreed to meet with Panjik and Sonylla for training.Frank woke up while she was still busy making breakfast.“Morning luv!” he said while standing behind her kissing her neck with his hands on her waist.“Morning!” she said, turning her head to kiss him back on the mouth. “Breakfast is almost ready.”“Still wanna go train today? With the workload you’ve had for the past few months, I’d think you deserve a break,” said Frank as he filled his mug with coffee.Frank sat on a stool by the kitchen island.“Yes, I need to. Panjik wants to help me train my spirit magic and give additional fire magic training to Sonylla, and I won’t pass on that. I was supposed to go to London for hand combat and weapon training with the EBEE… but I’l

August 3, 2003Coralis was at Panjik’s house for training. She went to London earlier that day for hand combat and weapon training and flew directly to Panjik’s afterwards. She was in the middle of a fight with Sonylla when she felt her hologram vibrating. She decided to ignore it, thinking it was the EBEE.When they were done, she pulled her hologram out of her cloak and saw that she had a message coming from Erik. She pressed to view the recording.‘Sis, call us back whenever you can. We have information regarding who broke through our wards 2 weeks ago.’“I remember you mentioning that. It was only your room that was turned upside down, right?” said Sonylla.“Yeah, my roommates in London think they were looking for something specific, but nothing was taken out of my room, so it could also be a warning.”“Everyone knows you got people after you. Against what would they be warning you,” said Sonylla.“That they know where she lives and can override her security wards,” said Panjik.“I

August 19, 2003Coralis arrived at the flyball field 30 minutes before practice started. There was no game scheduled for that day, as the new season hadn’t officially started, but it was the first practice of the season.Sebastian arrived shortly after her, holding a coffee cup in his hand.“You look like someone who could use a mighty monster juice,” said Coralis to him.Sebastian looked around, to make sure no one else was in the locker room.“I could use one of those indeed. I was so tired that I didn’t even think of taking some vials with me. How ironic considering I’m your supplier of mighty monster juice in times of need!”Coralis laughed at his comment.“That’s pretty interesting, indeed. What kind of mission have you been sent to?”“No mission. Well yes, maybe we could say they I got the mission accomplished, but it got nothing to do with the CMMA… although I will need to contact them after practice.”“You’re rambling. Spill.”“I barely slept last night,” said Sebastian after

September 3, 2003 – 21:00“I told them I didn’t have it. It wasn’t technically a lie, as I didn’t have it with me.”“Make sure they don’t see you going to any of your storage units,” said Erik.Coralis sat on the living room couch and was on a holographic call with Erik and Henry. They couldn’t prove that the EBEE elders had been talking to her mother’s relatives and the EBEE French elders didn’t know anything about it.“I want to move it, but it’s too risky. It is in the one I rented when I decided to relocate what was in my cousin’s unit to another one elsewhere… specifically for that kind of reason. I didn’t know if my relatives on my mother’s side knew about her storage unit.”The base of her hologram, which sat in the middle of her living room table, turned blue and she decided to ignore it, thinking that whoever was trying to call her could wait. From the corner of her eyes, she saw Frank getting ready to go shower.“It’s better if it stays there, think about it. They tried to b

September 3, 2003 – 21:45“Repeat that, please?” said Frank, quickly turning his attention to him.“The US posted a list of 50 witches that are to be killed on sight, and another one called Other Ones of Interest that are to be arrested for questioning. Me and my brother aren’t on them, neither are Sebastian and Gus, but Blue is,” said Henry.“We knew that I’d be a target if a war were to break out, can’t say I’m surprised, but 19th out of 50 names?”Frank passed his arm around her shoulders. She was leaning her elbows on her knees.“Most of the names listed aren’t even witches. Some of them should be on that list, yes, but most of those posted on their lists are elementals that stood against radicals,” said Erik.Henry pushed the lists into the hologram so that Coralis, Frank and their guests could see it.“Holy gods from above! Andrew is 26th and Sonylla is 48th. Eva and Veronica are listed on their other list,” said Coralis.“Why are you ranked higher than your mentor?” said Sebast

September 4, 2003 – 7:30“The corpses with the fake sigil tattoo? Hold on, I’ll put you on speakerphone. I’ve got a crowd over here who’ll want to hear about this.”“Yes. Oddly enough, there is no picture of them in any papers. Is Eva with you?”“No, but Sebastian is.”“Hello Veronica,” said Sebastian, holding a cup of coffee.“Oh good! Hi Sebastian! You are going to want to hear about this. I’m sure you remember the gory night against Lucas’ vampire last year?”“You’re talking about the night when a djinn tried to kill your brother and Blue stepped in, right?”“Yes, that night. Turned out that the vampires we killed, at least some of them, had the same tattoos on their left arm, right below the armpit. Papers are showing pictures of two of them, their left arm above their head, so their tattoos are clearly seen in the pictures.”“We burned them all, did we miss some corpses?”“No, we didn’t miss any, I’d set myself on fire on that.”“In which papers? I wanna see,” asked Gus.“Jorgie,

September 10, 2003 – 21:30“An unlikely ally?” said Coralis.Frank and the four mages stood in the kitchen around the kitchen island, deeply invested in Veronica’s story.“Very unlikely. A few days later, the citizens’ relentless plea fell into the ears of a sympathetic CIA agent. Intrigued, the middle-aged agent decided to visit them to find out more. He had met the one called Blue Thunder once before, and he remembered seeing a camera surveillance footage showing her and a young male seemingly deactivating a nuclear weapon on an isolated island. He knew she was no evil.”“Fart in the Sea. He saw me and Blue,” said Henry, looking at Coralis. “Erik and Gus were standing guard. We were all wearing an invisible cloak then, but it fell. When we got home, Gus managed to hack into their surveillance system to scrub the footage clean, but he couldn’t find it… that agent must have intercepted it before Gus got to it.”“A CIA agent? What’s his name? I mean, how do we know for sure he won’t do

Tonight, history was written in front of your eyes, as…”Frank felt he was on cloud 9 while returning to the team’s box. She said Yes. That alone was a victory. He figured that realistically, she probably wouldn’t be going home with him that night, but she was still his. In the end, that was all he needed to hear.As far as he was concerned, he and Coralis were now engaged, that was what mattered to him at the moment. If that meant 24/7 bodyguards, so be it, he didn’t care. They would figure this out, together. He didn’t lose her.The stadium staff stopped by the team’s box entryway and he got in. The people in the box ignored the game and awaited their turn to hug and congratulate him.“I knew she wouldn’t tell you no!” said Victoria, as she passed her arms around him. “I’m the one here who’s known her the longest. October 30, 2003 – 18:36Frank got up his seat and followed them. He tried not to think about what he just heard and focused on what he needed to accomplish. He knew that they would have a lot of catching up to do when they would finally be able to talk. They took him to an entry point of the field and stopped there. As soon as the siren announced the end of the first period and both teams reached their field entry point, the announcer silenced the crowd. Both teams stopped where they were to figure out what was going on. The stadium staff standing next to Frank ushered him to go to the middle of the field. They weren’t at ground level, but he saw a gangway forming from where he stood, leading to the middle of the field. Everyone stared silently at him.Coralis was shocked and confused. She wasn’t expecting to see Frank standing in the middle of their field. She looked at Sebastian, wondering if he knew what he was doing there. Sebastian was sporting a wide grin on his face and she fr

October 30, 2003 – 17:00Frank pulled by the sidewalk in front of Victoria’s apartment. He was about to text her that he was there, but he saw her walking out of her door, so he closed his phone and dropped it in the glove box next to him.“Ready? Didn’t forget anything?” said Victoria when she climbed into the backseat and fastened her seatbelt.“As ready as I’ll ever be, and yes, I’ve got everything I need. I’m super nervous, I’m not gonna lie, but I need to do this. Thanks for getting me in.”“As if I would want to miss that. Plus, they’re playing The Imperialists, you couldn’t have picked a better game to do this. Her three musketeers will witness it.”“Her 3 musketeers?”“That’s what I used to call Coralis, Gus, Erik and Henry at school. Gus may not be there, but Sebastian makes a better one now.”Frank and Stephanie laughed.“I can see the analogy,” said Frank.“Sebastian convinced him that he wanted tonight’s game. Frank wanted to do it last Monday, but a game against Russia… l

October 24, 2003Frank returned home in the middle of the night from a concert, where he had been interviewing the band. He knew that Coralis had a game in Europe that day, but his sister told him that they would be playing at home on Saturday. Coralis and Sebastian usually head back right after their game when they played home next, so he was hoping she’d be home. But she wasn’t. He looked at the time. He wanted to call Stephanie to see if Sebastian was home, but at 3 in the morning, he figured that his sister was probably asleep and he didn’t want to wake her up. He looked at his empty glass of whiskey in the middle of their living room table and the half-empty bottle next to it. He sat in front of it and filled his glass, hoping that it’d help him get some sleep. He missed her. He needed to know if she was okay. He wanted to believe she didn’t leave him, but it was becoming more difficult to hold on to that idea. He needed to know that she was still with him, that he was still in h

October 16, 2003For the past few days, she spent most of her time in her London flat. Her flyball team played in Europe and the EBEE had sent her on some cases around the city. Twice, she met with Sonylla, Panjik and Emery in a Pixie-run inn located near Tremblant. She sat on the foot of her bed, listening to her voicemails, just like when she started seeing Frank. It was full when she got back from the flyball field in Bulgaria. Part of her wanted to disconnect it and throw it across the room. She didn’t like the tears coming down her eyes as she listened to them. She didn’t know how to handle them. She hated the situation more than he did.She missed him. She needed him.Another part of her, however, didn’t want to send him the wrong message. She loved him, even if she didn’t understand it. She didn’t want him to think she left him just like that. She hoped that when it was over and the danger had dissipated, he would forgive her and get back to her.She knew however that it probab

October 10, 2003 – 11:30“High Mage Rollio?” said Sonylla.“I almost got captured last night on my way back from the flyball field. I didn’t even sleep at home, to make sure that whoever came after me wouldn’t find out about my human boyfriend and use him as leverage against me.”They all looked at her.“You too?” said Emery.“Yes, High Mage Rollio,” said High Mage Finnas, briefly looking at Sonylla before turning his attention to Coralis. “Almost got captured? How did you escape? Agent Gaspart Yoz managed to escape those who came after him but lost consciousness in the back of an alley. He woke up earlier this morning, but will need to remain at our clinic for a few days.”“No offence Finnas, but the answer to that question is pretty obvious if they tried to catch her while she was flying home. Blue doesn’t use portals. They would have needed at least an entire team of professional flyball players better than ours to successfully capture her,” said Emery.“This is fortunate for us, b

October 10, 2003 – 1:30“How do you think he is going to react? He loves you, madly. You know he is going to be upset and worried sick about you. However, I honestly understand why you may not want him to know where you are. We can’t lie. I mean, we may manipulate some wordings, when necessary, but if he directly asks me where you are… best if I don’t know, you’re right… but I don’t like it.”“Neither do I. I’d much rather be in bed with Frank right now, but before I come back home to him, I need to find out who sent them. These guys weren’t amateur, but whoever paid them forgot that I’m a damn professional flyball player.”“One of the bests at that. That was a dumb move on their part to try to get you while you’re flying.”“Dumb or not, they still tried. When you talk to Frank, can you please remain vague in your answers? I know he will worry and be mad at me. Our apartment is heavily warded, but I don’t know what my enemies are capable of. I need to find out who came after me tonigh

October 9, 2003 – 22:00Coralis was on her way home from her flyball game. Her team had a solid victory against Morocco. As she was about to enter the Laval skyline, she sensed she was being followed. Not wanting to lead her stalker to where she lives, she decided to circle the city anti-clockwise. She didn’t want to be seen entering the Montreal skyline. The uneasy feeling of being followed persisted and grew stronger. Suddenly, she saw someone floating still ahead of her, so she took a sharp turn west toward Rigaud. She was about to make a U-turn before passing the provincial border, but three people suddenly appeared right in front of her, and two on either side of her, forcing her to take another sharp turn going down. They were trying to capture her.She stabilized her altitude before reaching the top of the trees below her and paused. She was thankful that she wasn’t flying above a town. Looking up, she saw more people appearing from all directions, trying to trap her.Meanwhile

September 10, 2003 – 22:20“No, probably not, but who knows. Are you still calling it like that?” said Coralis as she pressed buttons on the microwave.“Perfect name for it, doesn’t it?” said Veronica while the others couldn’t contain their laughter.“If you say so. Henry came up with the idea to create a cursed replica of it and plant it in a location associated with my mother’s family because I found it at the same place as the Rawindra Sword and I had to kill two de Lima’s family members for it.”“That way you could find out who’s after it and possibly kill some middlemen in between. That’s a genius plan, I must say. You got no issues with possibly killing more relatives?” said Veronica.“That’s the idea, yeah, and no, I’ve got no issues. They’re no family of mine,” said Coralis as Frank rubbed her back. “Better I go after them before they find me and come for me. The original is believed to work only when an elf wears it, but I will make this one work on any elemental, except for
