"Eva, why are you sitting here in the dark?" Nora's voice broke through the silence, bringing me back to reality.
"Not in the dark. I'm watching Game Night to cheer myself up," I replied, my voice lacking enthusiasm. Nora settled down next to me, and I glanced at her, trying to figure out the time. It must be early since she usually left around eight in the evening. We often locked up together, and on Saturdays, we sometimes wouldn't get back home until six in the morning. But with the sun still hidden, it had to be much earlier than that.
She grabbed my spoon and started devouring my precious tub of Haagen-Dazs. Normally, that would have bothered me, especially since it was the last one, but after the night I had, I felt numb, devoid of any emotions.
"So, what gives? Why did Haagen-Dazs come out, and why did that one movie you hate become the answer to your prayers?" she asked, nudging me gently.
“Yeah, you’re right this is supposed to be eaten on special occasions. The price is nearly as much as the rent!”
I said trying to change the subject, yet she gave me a look which said, nice try Eva. Spill!
"So, I decided to go to the casino, since I hadn't been in a while, and with my membership card, I thought I could control myself."
“Go on, Eva. I’m listening. You know I have your back always.”
I relaxed my hands, feeling the anxiety creeping in as I relived the events of the night.
"I put on my cream slacks and headed there, not bothering to dress up, but I did wear my black heels."
"Nice choice. Cream and black heels," she complimented, waving her hand in the air, urging me to get on with the story before she got too engrossed in the movie that had finally started. With one eye on Cameron Diaz, who looked stunning as ever, and the other on Nora, who looked even hotter, I continued my tale.
"Well, there's a new dealer at the roulette tables. He started tonight. His name is Jose,” I needed a bit of ice-cream and a deep breath to continue this side of the story.
"Oh, a Latino. Nice. Is he hot?" she inquired, clearly intrigued.
I described Jose in great detail, recounting every aspect of his appearance. As I reminisced about him, my excitement grew. Even the way he placed the ball on the roulette wheel was oddly sexy. His accent was a turn-on, or maybe it was the champagne clouding my judgment. How many glasses did I have again?
"So, I asked him what time he finished, if he felt like spinning something at my place..."
I couldn’t look her in the eye, I was too embarrassed to continue the story.
"You didn't!" Nora gasped, her eyes wide with surprise.
"I did. And it gets worse," I confessed, thinking that she would never look at me the same way again if I continued to tell her.
"How?"
"I told him I was wearing red lingerie and that he could spin me all night. It would be much more exciting than turning the roulette wheel."
"You didn't!" Nora exclaimed again, nearly toppling the Haagen-Dazs's tub onto her lap while flailing her legs in the air. "When did you become so bold?" she asked, finally settling down as we both focused on the movie as we saw them all panicking as they realized they were in some deep shit in Game Night.
“Wow, it took them long enough to figure it out,” I remarked, dismissing her question.
“Now, it really starts to get interesting,” she agreed.
"So, what happened with the Latino lover? Is he in your room?" she whispered, pointing towards my bedroom.
I smacked her hand down. "Seriously, if he were in there, do you think I'd be telling you this story right now?"
I proceeded to recount the disastrous night and my ill-advised flirtations, which resulted in me getting kicked out of the casino and having my membership revoked after three years.
"I still can't believe you did that with your tongue! It's just nasty. Imagine if some guy walked into the club and did that to you. Lawsuit, anyone?" Nora commented, making a valid point.
I shrugged and sighed, conceding her argument.
Then Nora said, "Do that tongue thing again. I never knew it was so long!" I playfully pushed her hard, and she let out a fake cry.
"It's not all rosy, you know? That's what I wanted to tell you earlier. I mean, Des is not as well-endowed as you might think. Sometimes I wonder if I'll be satisfied if we take our relationship further, knowing that's what I'll have for the rest of my life."
"Well, at least you have companionship and friendship," she comforted me.
She pushed me and pointed to herself. "You know it's not the same. I can't even remember the last time a guy showed interest in me, let alone be attracted to me. I mean, I'm no Megan Fox, obviously.”
“No, you don’t have tattoos from your head to your toe and you’ve never had kids.”
Well, it wasn’t the only difference between us.
“The woman is hot, Nora. There’s no denying that.”
She shook her head. “You’re only as hot as you feel, and if you keep thinking of yourself as anything but hot, this is what men will see.”
“Confidence is everything!” We both said in unison. She’d said it to me a thousand times, and it wasn’t a case of only some of it had sunk in.
“It’s like, I think of having more confidence when I’m out there, but as soon as I have to put myself out there…”
“Then you end up on the sofa eating ice-cream you can’t afford.”
She sighed, and I rested my head on her shoulder. She freed her arms once she finished off the last of my Haagen-Daz, which annoyed me a little, but then a problem shared, is a problem halved.
And the next time I need a tub, she’s going to have to buy it!
I woke up to the gentle rays of morning sunlight filtering through the curtains of my room. Still feeling groggy, I stumbled my way to the kitchen, with only one thing on my mind, coffee! As I reached the kitchen, a small envelope caught my eye, beneath the door. I picked it up, and then put it on the workspace, thinking about my mission of drinking as much coffee as possible. After, the machine got to work and started brewing, I realized that the name on the card was mine.I took it and unfolded the paper and read the contents, my breath catching in my throat.Subject: Warning of Legal ActionDear Eva Rivers,We are writing to inform you of the serious consequences that await should you choose to return to Moonlight Manor Casino. “What the fuck!”Nora handed me my paycheck last night, and I couldn't believe I hadn't checked it until now. I’d been working half the time I usually do, and it's making me question who's really in charge of the schedule. Xavier and I had to talk, because he’d overpaid me, I could take it. God knows I needed it, but I knew if I did, and they found out that, then I would lose my job.Honesty was the best policy, even if I was tempted to keep quiet, I couldn’t afford to lose this job until my exam results are out, until I can officially call myself a graduate. As I swung open the club door, Xavier stood there, catching me completely off guard. I thought I was the only one opening up. My heart skipped a beat as our eyes locked, his intense gaze piercing my soul, only for him to quickly avert his eyes. It's like he's an enigma, a ghost in the night. Everyone says it, and it's true - you never hear him coming or going. Some say it's creepy, but Nora and I find it sexy. Sebastian claims i
Xavier reclined in his leather chair, his eyes smoldering with a mix of desire and secrets. The soft, amber glow from the desk lamp bathed his office in an intimate light, casting alluring shadows across his chiseled features. The sounds of laughter and clinking glasses from the lively bar below seemed to fade away, leaving only the pulsating energy between us.With a slow, deliberate movement, Xavier leaned forward, his voice a velvety whisper that sent shivers cascading down my spine. "Eva," he began, his words laced with a hint of danger, "these past few weeks have been nothing short of intoxicating. I’m obsessed with you.”I met his intense gaze, the air thick with anticipation. It was impossible to deny the magnetic pull that drew me to him, igniting a fire deep within my soul. "Xavier," I confessed, my voice barely a breath, “it’s as if I’ve never been touched by a man before."I realized what I’d said. I wasn’t a virgin. But, I felt like a born again virgin with him, as if no m
"Nora!" I yelled, trying to catch my breath as I joined her at the bustling bar. It was as if Xavier not confirming anything about our relationship made me feel at ease. He didn’t want to label it, and I didn’t want a label. Never in my life had I felt this way, I’d often demanded, wanted them to make it official, but with Xavier everything was different. Especially the way he made me feel from the waist downward.“Oh, there you are," she responded with her eyes twinkling. I fumbled with my skirt, attempting to straighten it. Whenever he approached us at the bar, he'd either playfully smack my butt or request someone to summon his "woman" and fetch him a drink.Xavier had a primal air about him, a presence that sent shivers down everyone's spine. There were rumors circulating, ridiculous tales of him being a vampire, which supposedly explained his nocturnal nature. After all, he worked in a club—nighttime was his domain. It was crazy the way everyone behaved around him. Scared but t
I didn’t understand the bizarre letter I had received from the casino. Who in their right mind sends a formal invitation to someone they've banned and then threatens them with a lawsuit for sexual harassment if they dare step foot inside again? It was beyond humiliating, and there was no way I could ever go back there."Seriously, the humiliation, Ells. I can't go back there," I exclaimed, frustration seeping into my voice. Glancing at my watch, I realized I had a mere three hours until my shift started, and wouldn't you know it, the casino was conveniently on my way."I don't get it, Eva," Nora replied, her brow furrowed with confusion."Me neither," I sighed in agreement."No, not about you going back, but did the card got through the door. I mean, it wasn't in the mailbox. It's almost like it was hand-delivered, and from the smell of the card, someone did a good job at hiding where it's been."Sometimes I couldn't help but wonder about Nora. Here I was, grappling with the decision
“What am I doing here?” I blurted thinking if this was some kind of trick, then I wasn’t in the mood for playing games. “You see I own this casino!”“So, you pretend to be one of the usher’s and then you slap your clients with law suits, then you invite them up to your big castle?”I stood up with my hand on my hip. ON the Little did I expect to find myself face-to-face with the elusive big boss. He exuded an aura of power and authority, yet beneath that hardened exterior, there was a vulnerability that drew me in like a moth to flame. My heart fluttered, eager to explore the depths of his enigmatic world."Well, well, well," I said, my voice laced with a hint of mischief. "I never thought I'd have the pleasure of meeting the elusive big boss himself. You exude power and authority, but I have a feeling there's more to you than meets the eye."He raised an eyebrow, a playful smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "And what makes you say that, Eva?""Oh, I have a sixth sense for dete
As I stood behind the bar, Xavier gave me a wink. He did that at the start of each shift. It was our secret message to say we were closing up the club for the night, and after, he was opening me up. Normally, I would feel excitement when he did that, but tonight, the fear seemed to be taking over my body and mind. I nervously winked back at him and carried on with my shift.Later, Nora came up to me and said the most surprising thing. “All my nightmares are over. Des’s back.”I stood in awe and watched him as he glided up and down the bar. Hadn’t he disappeared for weeks? Didn’t she see him with another woman? Foremost, didn’t he dump her nine months ago? I just didn’t get it. After all this time, he came back and acted as if nothing ever happened? The strangest part was he looked good. I mean, he looked a lot stronger, just a little pale. If I didn’t know any better, I would say he had the same complexion as Xavier. Then I watched in confusion as Des cracked a joke with someone. One
I woke up feeling groggy, like someone had hit me with a baseball bat. I rubbed my head checking if I had a bump or something that could make me feel so bad, but instead, I was greeted with a warm smile and several locks of blonde hair hanging in front of my eyes, belonging to the girl lying next to me.“Hey, sleepy head, I thought you would never wake.” Nora. She joined me in rubbing my head, like a caring mother after their child hurt themselves on the playground. As she tentatively attended to me, I could see the love and care in her eyes.“I feel rough. I’ve either got a really bad hangover, or someone ha—” I didn’t finish my last words as I made a mad dash to be sick. I just made it. I wiped my face, and as I looked up into the mirror, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I looked like something from a horror movie. My pale and gaunt face made me appear like I had not eaten for weeks, which was not true, judging by the contents of what I just disposed of in the toilet. I kept touchin
In the car, Xavier explained what happened. Basically, Xavier just retold me the same story I’d heard from Nora earlier. Meanwhile, the person I thought was his brother never got introduced. He sat at the back, humming to himself. I nodded to the back, but Xavier ignored my silent question. I was frustrated, because whoever it was back there was getting ignored too. I wanted to know who the pale-looking man was. Could he be my next boss? Patience was a virtue, but still, the whole situation felt surreal. I couldn’t speak—Xavier’s driving skills, or lack thereof, always made me nervous. Previously, I’d asked him if he was trying to kill me, and his response was always the same: ‘If I was, it wouldn’t be with my driving.’ Yep, my man had a very warped sense of humor. His cynical laugh told me it was his version of a joke. He nearly had me wetting myself; it was as if he drove with his eyes closed—stayed too close to the car in front of us, changed lanes without signaling, and even wor

Great, only one hour and forty-five minutes until ten. Maybe having shorter hair wasn’t such a bad idea. I supposed in hindsight shorter hair made the getting-ready process a lot less painful. I started grew anxious as I thought about the events of the last few days. I couldn’t remember anything, and it was torturing me. I tried recalling any memory, but no such luck. This is just crazy.I put on my green tunic dress. It had a low neckline giving a sneak preview of my breasts. I looked at myself in the mirror, with my new haircut. The tunic hugged my figure. Normally a bit loose, today it felt tight, and my belly was poking out. Must be all those pancakes from earlier! I loved wearing this dress for the short length and the shiny color. I walked to the club, which meant I’d get there on time; I’d be too early if I took the bus. It was the middle of summer, so it was still light out. It’d get dark as soon as I arrived at the club. As I walked the blocks and busy streets, I observed e
Nora had two management classes still to repeat. She didn’t pass when they graded our papers, so she had to repeat the whole semester. She went to her friend’s house for some notes, because she missed classes while looking after me. I gazed around the apartment for the first time since all this happened, and noticed it was immaculate.Everything was in the right place. It’s not messy! All the old, scruffy pillows were replaced with new embroidered ones. I lifted one up, admiring the beautiful design. Where have I seen this symbol before?I glanced at my watch. Shoot, it was eight and I hadn’t had a shower yet. I ran the water and stepped in. The first thing I did was reach back to let my hair down, but when I felt my new short bob, I realized I needed to get used to not having to do that anymore. It had been comforting letting my long hair loose after a hard day. Normally, it would take an hour to prepare, including washing, conditioning, and the painful hair-drying experience. My who
I checked on my side table for my phone, never realizing it was switched to silent. In that time, between three in the afternoon, whenever I woke up, and now, Xavier called at least a dozen times.I sensed panic in his voice when he answered. “Didn’t Nora call when I woke up?” I asked. “She did, but she said you were confused. I tried maybe two hours ago, then figured you needed rest. Should I come over?”Right now, for some reason, he was the last person I wanted to be with. “No!” I blurted. Wow, that was weird. Normally, I wanted Xavier with me twenty-four-seven.What was it with all this fucking paranoia? It was doing my head in. I needed to explain to Xavier why I didn’t want my boyfriend—soon-to-be live-in partner, future husband and father of my children—with me at this precise moment in time, when I was so vulnerable. I’d answered his concern for me with negativity, so much of it I just shouted through the phone at him. Why?“Have you seen Nora lately?” I asked, changing the
Holy cow! Nora made pancakes and everything. She never cooked breakfast. Nora was more of a grab-a-bite-and-go girl. I’d never seen her in the kitchen for longer than five minutes, unless it involved microwaving popcorn, pizza, or leftover take-out.“Since when do you know how to cook?”“I’ve always cooked,” she replied. Nora pushed a stray hair behind her ear. Wait…is her hair tied back in a bun? It sure is. When I woke up, her hair was down. Her hair was always out, since she loved showing off her blonde curls, especially because it was natural. The girls at the club always teased her, asking, “How much did you pay to get your hair that color?” Or, “It’s amazing what you can get from a bottle.” She’d swat at them playfully and say, “Blondes have all the fun. Well…natural blondes do anyway.”I felt like I was being suffocated. I loved Nora, but something was not right. It was not adding up. My stomach rumbled, distracting me as the food started to whet my appetite, making me feel as
