Four years later

Ember

Maybe I didn't die, but a part of me did.

I smiled warmly as I stirred the pot of stew, the aroma filling the kitchen.

A boy about three years old burst into the kitchen, his little face scrunched up in a pout. He rushed to me, his chubby legs moving as fast as they could.

"Mommy!" he exclaimed, his tiny arms reaching up for me to carry him.

That's my son Kai.

I scooped him up, spinning him around in a circle before planting a kiss on each cheek. He giggled, his pout has now been forgotten.

"Where's Aunty Lyra, sweetie?" I asked, setting him down on the counter.

He thought for a moment, his brow was furrowed, then, he shrugged his tiny shoulders and said, "I don't know."

"Then who bring you back?"

He spread his little hands and said, "I walked by myself."

Of course he did, I could hear the sound of the door opening. It was undoubtedly Lyra. I mean my son walked from the grocery store back home, what an expert he was. I pinched his cheeks and chuckled at his adorable response. "Well, maybe we'll find her later, okay?"

He nodded, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Okay, Mommy!"

I smiled, hugging him tight. "I love you, little one."

"I wuv you too, Mommy!" he replied, snuggling into my embrace.

Just then, a warm, exasperated voice spoke up from behind us. "Well, he wouldn't know, would he? He kept me busy in the grocery store, playing with a puppy, and then...!"

Lyra walked into the kitchen, she was in her mid-sixties, and a head scarf covered her hair. She rolled her eyes good-naturedly and continued, "And as if that wasn't enough, look what he did to my hair!"

She dramatically removed the scarf, revealing a hairdo that resembled a bird's nest. I burst out laughing at the sight.

Lyra feigned annoyance, as she crossed her arms, staring at us. Then she continued to say hurtfully... Ahem, a pretending kind of hurt.

"I spent a fortune on this hairstyle, and then this little scamp got his hands on it...!"

Her voice trailed off as she ruffled her hair, trying to restore some semblance in order. But

Kai giggled, clearly pleased with himself, and I couldn't help but chuckle along with him.

Kai looked up at Lyra with wide, innocent eyes and said, "I only played with it and made it beautiful!"

Lyra chuckled and teased, "Oh, what a wolf you are! You've ruined my hair, and now - no more chocolate bars for you henceforth, young man!"

Kai's face fell, and he quickly asked me to put him down.

As soon as his feet touched the floor, he ran to Lyra and wrapped his arms around her legs, begging, "Sorry, Aunty Lyra! Sorry!"

He gazed up at her with those big, innocent eyes, and asked, "is aunty Lyra still mad at me?"

Lyra's expression softened, and she couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, you little scamp... I'm not mad, but you have to promise to be gentle with Aunty Lyra's hair from now on, deal?"

Kai nodded eagerly, still clinging to her legs. "Deal, Aunty Lyra! I promise!"

I couldn't help but briefly close my eyes and take a deep breath, it was just like yesterday.

Flashback

"Look at her being locked here for two weeks without any family members coming to speak for her except that kind woman." A man in a police uniform nodded in my direction.

"Who would come to look for her? She killed the last standing member of her family, looking at her people would assume she's just as harmless, unknown to them, that she mercilessly killed her own father because of his company!" Another police officer viciously said gawking at me.

I laid in the cold cell. I didn't really care what they were saying, but the thought of my father's death shook me to my utmost core. I felt angry at myself for not being able to stop that snake of a woman.

She even had the guts to come here to sympathize with me the day I was locked up, she came with Rowan, but she later came back acting as if she forgets something.

"Between you and me, Ember, you shouldn't have gone out that night. It's not as bad as it seems. Although I was unable to kill you, you can take this fall and go to jail. It's not the end of the world." I could never forget those words she said to my face.

End of flashback.

It was exactly that day when the sheriff came to me and asked the officer to set me free, the fingerprint didn't match mine, so I was declared innocent.

I knew someone had helped me, and that someone was Lyra, a friend of my mother who saw the incident on TV and flew over from Florida to Arizona.

Fortunately for me, her husband is a feared Alpha who owned a pack in Florida.

With her influence I was proven innocent and released. She asked me if I would go back with her. I didn't want to in the beginning but I have nothing left in Arizona. Even if I wanted revenge on Astrid, I will do it as soon as I gain my feet.

Who could've thought I would be pregnant from that night with that stranger?

It also came as a surprise to me when I learned about it.

I stirred the soup once more and turned off the gas.

"I have to redo my hair, I'm just so tired." Lyra plops herself on the sofa and yawns, "And shouldn't you also be preparing for the design exhibition instead of making breakfast?" She raised an eyebrow at me.

Right, I was going to a design exhibition today. During the four years I've been growing, I joined an architectural design academy for two years, and for a year now I have my own workplace. And the company grew really fast.

Alpha Jordan, Lyra marked mate, also helped me to secure a place so I could participate, and I've been working for over a week to go there with my best design. The project is interior design.

"I guess I should go and have my bath..." I said. But Lyra called me back and said, "Since you were only going there to submit your design, take him with you, I'm going for a hair redo, you won't have him ruining it again will you?"

I rolled my eyes playfully at her and said, "The boy likes you, he was only playing with you."

"Of course he is, but I need to look good for Jordan, he will be back today." She said as a layer of blush covered her cheeks.

"Fine... I will take him with me." Even though they were this old, their love was so strong, I always loved to see them, and sometimes I just couldn't help but think a love this deep, it was truly rare. Would I ever find something like that?

******

"You don't run around alright? Stay close to mommy." I said to Kai as soon as we got out of the car and walked into the huge building before me.

"Okay mommy."

I just have to reach the secretary and submit it then go back. It was that easy.

I did everything I had to do quickly and fill in the required information. The moment I'm done, I turned to look at the boy standing beside me, but the place Kai was standing at was now empty.

A feeling of dread came over me as I bolted away from the secretary, frantically looking everywhere, calling his name, shouting but no one answered.

"Please have you seen a little boy, this tall and he has golden eyes, curly black hair, he was in a blue shirt and black pullover jacket."

The woman I was asking a question from shook her head, "No."

I kept asking, running around, until I saw a man, I went to him and asked the same question.

"Yes I've seen him that way... I saw him go that way, if you're quick enough you should find him."

"Thank you."

I ran as fast as I could towards the place pointed to by the man. The moment I turned the corner, I was in a restroom hallway, and there he was, my little boy, just that he wasn't alone.

He was hugging the legs of a man, not just any man, I could still remember his face like I saw him just yesterday, and the moment he lifted his head. His golden eyes looked into my black ones.

It was really awkward but I walked up to them and pulled Kai away from him, "I've been looking for him, I'm sorry for the inconveniences."

I turned to walk away but he pulled back my hand, "Little bunny?"

I stiffened, biting my lips, my posture was a little slouch as I peel his hand off me and respond with a smile, "I'm sorry sir, but you got the wrong person."

"How could I got the wrong person? Even if you don't remember my face I'm sure you haven't forgotten about our steamy night right bunny?”

Maverick I had just stepped out of the restroom when my cell phone buzzed. Taking it in my hand, I answered the call. “Yes, what's the update?” I asked Alex, my assistant. “Sir, I’ve made contact, and there are already submissions coming in. He’d like you to see them yourself,” Alex said. “Good. I’ll check them right away. And arrange my flight; I’ll be heading back today.” I hung up and turned to leave, but that was when I noticed a little boy, no more than three years old, with curly black hair and golden eyes, staring up at me and hugging my leg with his tiny arms. I couldn’t help but smile. “Hey there, little guy,” I said, planning to ask if he was lost. I felt a strange sense of familiarity with him. Before I could say anything more, a woman rushed into the hallway, her eyes frantically scanning until they found the child—then, they found me. Her expression shifted from worry to shock as she froze, her beautiful dark eyes locked on mine. My heart skipped a beat in that mom

Ember I didn't wait any minute before hugging Kai even tighter to myself and fled the place. I could feel his burning gaze on me, until I entered into the taxi and it drove away from the company. By the time I arrived at silver fang pack it was almost afternoon, I head directly to the pack estate where I lived with Lyra, Alpha Jordan and some of the omegas in the pack, I entered and plopped myself on the couch, Something smells delicious, and judging by the aroma from the food coming from the kitchen, it could only mean one thing. I stood at the kitchen entrance for sometime, Lyra whipped her head to look at me the moment she noticed I was there. Her hair had now been styled beautifully, her eyes were also shining brightly, the woman had put enough effort into looking more beautiful. "Where is he?" I asked looking around as I released Kai hand so he would go and play with his friends in the estate. "How did you know he has already arrived?" She raised her eyebrows as sh

I woke up the next day and quickly prepared myself to go to the company. Fortunately, Alpha Jordan wanted Kai to stay with him, since he'll be at home all day with Lyra. Just that I was a little nervous to run into that man again, I don't think I can hide from him, most especially those piercing golden eyes staring into my black ones as if searching for the truth. Furthermore, there was even this dangerous feeling I got from him when I was close to him that day, my senses were yelling at me to run, but there was also this allure too. Pushing my hair backward, I packed it and applied gloss on my lips before grabbing my bag. Alpha Jordans Beta, Chris, will be taking me that morning. I slipped into the car as it drove away from the estate. In no time we were already in the company, "Thank you so much for the ride, you don't have to wait for me, I might take a lot later, so I'll be taking a cab back." "Alright." He nodded and drove away. I also walked into the company before

It was that same nickname I told him I hated a lot, however I had to be professional at this instance, and looking around, we were surrounded by workers, so I'm sure he wouldn't try anything funny with me. His black shirt had two buttons undone, and his black hair was styled differently today, "It's fancy running into you here." He stretched his pocketed hand for a handshake which I took. His hand was cold, but I kept my composure as I took back my hand from his and replied with a smile, "Of course it was." I'm not really sure about that because with him here, I wanted to get out of here as soon as possible.Who would believe we're running into each other? but I just couldn't get what he wanted with all of this so I asked, "Are you also a worker here?" He laughed and suddenly stopped, "No, I just came to check things, but it was such a coincidence to run into you here. A good one I

Maverick I stood by the window, gazing out at the garden downward as I sensed someone's presence behind me, his steps was drawing closer, I turned to look at the person. "Ryder," My face gather up a frown. Alex would have to answer why this man was allowed in my house, "Good to see you, Maverick, It's been a while." He grinned. "What brings you here?" I asked curtly, shifting my gaze back to the window. I didn't want to get into small talk. At least not with this one. I heard him exhaled and plopped himself into my sofa, "Not even a drink?" Seeing I didn't reply, he began to say, "Well I'm just worried about your latest venture, I mean weren't you putting a lot on the line?" My gut tightened, as my jaw clenched in irritation. Ryder was one of the few people I could call acquaintances, considering we've known each other for a while now, and I've known him enough to knew he wasn't here for a chitchat. "I believe what I do wasn't any of your business, " "Maverick, ev

Ember I couldn't wrap my head over what Kai said, things like this never happened to him. Kai was the type of boy that shared his things with his friends. Even if his friend did something bad to him, he'd rather keep it to himself to save the friend from getting into trouble. So I was baffled by what he said. "Don't be scared alright? Mommy is here, and you have to promise not to listen to it when it tells you to do bad things alright?" With a gentle tug, I pulled him closer, my eyebrow quivering upward as I rubbed his back in soothing circles. I'm more than worried right now, Kai wasn't old enough to meet his wolf, so how could there possibly be a voice whispering something to him? And to do bad things that is. "Mommy, Kai is hungry and wants a dumpling." He suddenly said, his voice muffled by the fabric I'm wearing. "I will get you dumplings, just stay here and let me change my dress," I said as I sat him on the bed in the room, I quickly took off my dress and threw o

Ember "I thought you were going to a party." I asked Clara who was now walking to where I was with that same astonishment on her face. "I should be asking you that, oh... Wait, now I understand, but you should've told me that you're refusing to come with me because you're actually coming with a date." My brow furrowed as I tried to make sense of Clara's words. I replayed our conversation in my head, I don't remember telling her about a date, in fact I don't have any date, and I'm not even attending the party so what...? "I didn't have a date, and this is the hotel where I'm staying for the time being." I pointed out as she exclaimed loudly, "oh." Then her face suddenly switched, the confusion written on her face a minute ago was gone, now replaced by a brightened face staring at me as she said, "That's great! Because this is actually the party, since you're here, I'm sure you can have a brief glance at the party, you can just show up with me for a few minutes before going

Flashback I rushed into the dining room when I heard Derek's car, I hurriedly arranged the table and cups properly, before taking another spree into the kitchen, I washed my hands and dried them with the hand towels then I hung them back. I smiled, everything was in place, dessert has been made, the cake was baked, and the meal was also prepared. I took a great time that morning grilling the steaks and making sure it was all greasy and a little spicy, just as Derek liked them. His footsteps grew closer, by the time the doorknob twisted and he stepped a foot in, I threw in the air the foil cutout I made shouting… “Welcome back daddy, and happy birth—day” the rest of the words came out almost mechanically as a pair of black heels stepped into the sitting room. Derek stood at 6.2ft tall. His black hair was just like mine, soft and smooth. I'd helped him dry and combed them when I was little. Derek took the hand of the brunette woman behind him and brought her to my side. There w

Was this your big surprise?”He chuckled, shaking his head. “Not at all. This was definitely not part of the plan. But look—it’ll come back. We just have to wait.”I shifted uneasily, trying to mask my growing anxiety with humor. “What if we end up living out some kind of real-life Jaws nightmare?”He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “Seriously? Ember I thought I will be able to pull this off successfully, however I'm not so very confident right now.I was wondering what it'll be like with him for the first time as not a business partner… om that topic, what are we really? Logically, he admitted taking a likeness to me, and I might've like him too… no, I likes him too.God's I couldn't even tell exactly when that happens. Inhaling, and exhaling. The sand was cool beneath my feet as I stepped onto the beach. A handful of people were at the shoreline, their voices mingling with the distant crash of waves. My eyes scanned the place, searching for him but there was no sign of him, even though he'd texted he will be here at 6pm, and I'd done a good job spending extra minutes at home to not appear overly excited and too over the date with him, in the end i was still the first to get here. However, my search was set aside when I caught a glimpse of a white yacht anchored a little further out,It was beautiful, I admit, but when

Ember“Ember, hurry up and get out here! We’re starving!” Lyra’s voice rang out from the dining table, teasing but loud enough to make her point.I could almost see her rolling her eyes, a little grin tugged at my lips as I called back, “On my way!”I arranged the dishes on the tray, carrying them to the dining table, where Lyra and Kai were already seated. As I entered, Lyra’s gaze swept over me, and she let out an exaggerated sigh. “Finally,” she muttered, rolling her eyes, her voice filled with drama as she continued sarcastically, “We were this close to death.” she indicated with her fingertips.“Oh please, Lyra,” I growled playfully.Just then, Alpha Jordan walked closer, glancing at her with a raised eyebrow. “What’s going on?”Lyra shot me a mischievous look before turning to him. “It’s Ember,” she said, grinning. “She’s been holed up in the kitchen, smiling like an idiot. I almost got chills seeing her like that, considering how cold she’s been lately.”Alpha Jordan chuckled

We glided through the air until our feet touched the ground, thankfully no one was paying attention to the building, so I was sure no one saw.“That’s insane! You should’ve warned me or something.” She frowned, folding her arms as she walked away.I quickened my pace to catch up. “Did I scare you?” I reached for her hand to slow her down, but she stayed silent, ignoring me completely. Was she upset?
