They came to the door in the night. Werewolves from the shifter pack on the other side of the forest. Nell could hear the raised voices from where she sat, worrying, beside her fatherās bed. From what she could make out their Luna was about to give birth and the Alpha was demanding assistance from the best doctor for miles around.
Martin Field was going nowhere. He still had a temperature and was weak from lack of food.
āSomeone must come. Now!ā
Nell flinched on hearing the dominant tone. Hopefully, Mom would stand her ground. She usually did.
But she was in for a shock.
āMy daughter will go with you.ā
Surely she wasnāt about to send Olivia? The unkind thought as to her elder sisterās usefulness came and went as Nell observed the turning of the doorknob.
āThereās no change, Mom,ā she whispered, as if fearful the werewolves might hear.
Rosemary Worthington Fieldās thin lips formed into a sneer. āGet your coat, Nell. Youāre going on a little trip,ā she said.
āMe?ā
She couldnāt believe it at first. Not when she was needed here to nurse her father through his unexplained fever.
āThe Alpha requested you specifically.ā
That was obviously a lie.
āWell, Iām not going,ā she dared, reaching across and squeezing Dadās clammy hand.
āWould you like to tell him that?ā
āIf I have to,ā she muttered.
āHeās waiting on the doorstep.ā
Her elder sister poked her head round the door, still yawning.
āWhatās all the fuss about?ā Olivia wanted to know.
āThe Alpha requires a midwife and your sister is being stubborn.ā
āAs usual.ā
That wasnāt new, either, the way the two of them ganged up on her as if she were some freak.
āWhatās taking so long?ā a voice roared.
Nell flinched. She had heard the Alpha was ruthless and didnāt care who he hurt.
Her mom seized hold of her by the elbow, hauling her to her feet, and dragged her out of the bedroom and down the stairs to the hallway. Nell resisted all the way, but she was small and nowhere near as strong as the woman callous enough to force her into this nightmare.
Alpha Liam was tall and broad with a buzz cut fade and piercing blue-green eyes.
āPlease, Iām needed here!ā she cried, wresting her arm from her momās mean grip. āFatherās sick and needs a lot of care.ā
āIs he dying?ā
The barked query rocked her.
āI donāt know.ā
āThen thereās no question of staying. You will come with me now, woman, or I will torch this place to the ground.ā
āYou canāt mean that.ā
Even Mom looked apprehensive for once.
Olivia took the red duffle coat from its peg and handed it to her, obviously flirting with the Alpha and the two pack members who had accompanied him. With her long dark curls and startling blue eyes, not to mention the revealing nightdress, she outshone Nell in looks and she had resigned herself to being second best.
Except that Alpha Liam was studying her curiously, his wide mouth parted slightly, as she put her arms in the sleeves. She began to panic that her ears werenāt covered by her flaxen hair but he seemed more interested in her face and body. A slow heat rose from the very heart of her and she averted her gaze as she fastened the toggles.
A sudden moan from Martin Field tugged at her heartstrings.
āTell him Iāll see him tomorrow,ā she blurted.
āThatās up to the Alpha,ā Olivia said, obviously sucking up.
Nellās chocolate brown eyes dared to meet the Alphaās uncompromising ones. āSwear to me, or the dealās off.ā
āDid you not hear what I said?ā he snarled. āAnd I donāt negotiate with humans. Bring her, Jack.ā
Tears werenāt far away but she managed to keep them at bay. Glancing round, she saw the hand-made sign swaying in the wind, āShifters By Appointment Onlyā, and cringed.
āNot your doing?ā The query came from a bearded werewolf who wore his own authority far more lightly.
āIām sorry if it seems rude.ā
āCan I give you a piece of advice? Donāt ever apologise if itās not your fault. Iām Alpha Liamās Beta, Jack Williams.ā
āEleanor Field. Though I prefer Nell.ā
āMove, woman!ā
The Alpha was still furious for some reason and it dawned on her she hadnāt even asked after the Luna.
āBut I donāt have any equipment,ā she said, stalling for time.
āWe have everything you need back at the Wide River pack,ā the Beta told her.
āHow far along is she? Have her waters broken yet?ā Nell asked, switching to what she hoped was convincing professional mode.
āYouāll see.ā
Alpha Liam was obviously still in a mood. Strange how he preferred designer stubble to hanging up his razor indefinitely.
āI am sure there is no cause for alarm,ā she said. āIs it her first litter?ā
āThe last.ā
Uncertain how to respond to that cryptic reply, Nell held her tongue.
Fall brought its share of uncertain weather and soon it began to rain. Turning round, belatedly, to say her farewells, she was nonplussed to see the door was already closed.
Nell sighed. At least the Beta was friendly, his grey eyes sympathetic rather than hostile.
āShall we?ā he said, gesturing for her to precede him.
Her answering smile was tentative and faded away entirely on hearing Alpha Liamās impatient growl.
āWe donāt have all night.ā
Nell wasn't sure why his voice affected her so much.
Jack took pity on her. āDonāt take it to heart. Heās worried about Martha.ā
āIs that the Luna?ā
But he didnāt have chance to answer.
āGet in, woman,ā Alpha Liam ordered.
And she realised he meant her to sit beside him in the passenger seat.
āItās Nell, Alpha,ā she told him, softly, climbing in and placing her hands in her lap.
He glanced at her. āIām not one for small talk.ā
āMe neither,ā she said.
āAw, give it a go, Alpha.ā
A different voice, rougher, followed up with a laugh.
āShut up, Henry. Youāre not the one in charge here.ā
āLighten up, cousin. Itās not as if the pups are yours.ā
Nell gasped, then covered her mouth with her hands. Should she be privy to such intimate information?
āI ā I wonāt tell a soul,ā she blurted.
āNo, you wonāt,ā Alpha Liam agreed, causing her heart to thump unsteadily.
She swallowed. āYouād be surprised what goes on in the village.ā
āGossip is poison,ā he spat.
Nell bridled. āThatās why I never indulge,ā she said. It felt good to answer back. After all, she wasnāt beholden to this man, this werewolf. In fact, she was doing him a favour. āAs a trainee midwife you hear things. Itās just not possible to close your ears to everything that comes out during labour.ā
āIs that so? Iāll have my legal team draw up an NDA.ā She assumed he was joking, until he added, āDoes your surname have an āsā at the end, or not?ā
The ride did not take long. Watertight was a sprawling community of cabins laid out in a rectangle within which was the packhouse. It was lit up by more than moonlight and she had time only to hear the loud beat of popular music and smell corn on the cob before she was hustled to the birthing chamber. This pack seemed to be making a celebration out of something which could not be guaranteed. She swallowed. What if something went wrong and she couldnāt save either mother or offspring? āWhat are you waiting for? Go inside. My aunt is with her and can send for whatever you need.ā āYes, Alpha Liam,ā Nell said, wondering why he was so reluctant to look at her now. The she-wolf was muscular, as expected, but also filled with compassion in that she offered Nell a hot drink from the outset. They lingered in the small kitchen area. āYou must be perished,ā she said. āIām Deborah, by the way. Have you been doing this long?ā āIāve done several assists.ā āPlease tell me you havenāt lost a pu
A week passed. Deborahās daughter, Holly, was petite like her and snuck her in some clothes. The Beta turned a blind eye when he showed up, though she knew the yellow dress didnāt suit her. She made them both a pot of coffee and they sat on the couch for a chat. Because it had been on her mind a lot, she blurted out what had been eating at her resentful heart since day one. āWhy did you come to our house in the first place? Deborahās more than competent.ā Jack blew on his drink to cool it before replying. āSheās like you,ā he said. āUnappreciated.ā āIām glad someone thinks so.ā Nell hesitated. āWhy doesnāt the Alpha come and see his half-sister? Is he too busy?ā āThatās only part of the reason,ā the Beta said, avoiding her eyes now. Nell waited, but it seemed he wasnāt about to say any more. āDo you have pups of your own?ā āNot yet, but Louisaās still hopeful. Weāve been mated a year now.ā āThen thereās plenty of time,ā she assured him, hoping that was the case. Alpha Liam s
Being Alpha wasnāt something he had been raised to do and the eighteen hour days felt like a curse. Yet, ever since a rogue killed Simon, his elder brother, there was no alternative. Liam knew he was prone to blaming people for what he believed to be his inadequacies but he couldnāt help himself. The fact that he hadn't yet found his mate was another failing on his part. If she was anything like Pamela, the pack slut, who these days filled him with revulsion then he would have no alternative but to reject her. In some ways he envied his Beta. Jack was settled with Louisa, though there was no sign of her becoming pregnant yet. After a long day wading through paperwork and a tedious meeting about an impending shortage of gas, the Alpha decided to go for a much-needed run. He checked his watch. Nell would be back soon. He couldnāt help imagining the look on her face when he suggested a trip to the forest another time. One thought led to another and he found himself standing outside th
āWhat do you mean, I wonāt be Fallonās main carer from now on?ā āOliviaās here now. Aunt Deborah thinks sheās more than competent.ā Nell was sure her anxiety must show on her face. āPlease, Alpha,ā she begged. āLet me check her over at least.ā āNo,ā he said. āWould you punish your own half-sister, too?ā āYou flatter yourself, human. Very well. But Iāll be there the whole time,ā he warned. āThank you, Alpha. You wonāt regret it.ā āHurry up. You have seventy suppers to prepare.ā At first she thought she had misheard him. Had he said āseventeenā? Yes, that must be it. Fallon was sleeping when they arrived. Nell didnāt miss the knowing smirk on her sisterās face. What on earth was she wearing? Those shorts were far too tight. She must have packed her own bag. Was she staying, too? How would her mom cope, living on her own after all this time? Well, that was the least of her worries now. Stooping to plant a kiss on Fallonās chubby cheek, Nell turned to the Alpha. āI suppose you
Nell reflected that it was just her luck that the music had changed to a slow ballad. She knew all the excuses in the world wouldnāt save her now. This was bound to upset a lot of people. Well, it couldnāt be helped. Alpha Liam was the last person she wanted to antagonise. He looked good in his charcoal grey suit and was actually clean-shaven for the occasion in contrast to the majority of his male pack members. Was that a new aftershave or a scent wafting in from the garden? It was unseasonably warm which was why the windows were open. Accepting his outstretched hand, Nell told him, āIām flattered, but you really ought to know I have two left feet.ā The Alpha leaned down a long way to whisper in her ear, āThat makes two of us. The difference is, Iām paying people not to notice.ā She wanted to giggle but didnāt dare. He was so hard to read most of the time. Then she was being pulled in close for an unnerving slow dance. The top of her head barely reached to his chest and he was st
Liam stood people watching from the open doorway, reluctant to re-join the crowd at his own party. Turning twenty-five without a mate was sending him down the feral route. He sometimes believed he would end up as crazy as his mother.Aunt Deborah was trying to catch his eye. She seldom used the mind link with him, even though he had encouraged it. Now would be a good time to make her see sense and he continued to ignore her, knowing only too well what she wanted.Uncle Alan sauntered over. These days he was the packās accountant, but for once he didnāt want to talk shop, thankfully.āWhat did Nell do to upset you?ā he asked, offering him a drink.āThatās my business,ā Liam said.Accepting the cup of punch, he scanned the crowd, wondering who was babysitting Fallon. The Beta was absent though he could see Louisa by the French windows deep in conversation with three other she-wolves.Was Nell now alone with Jack? Well, that was one pack member who wouldnāt dream of trespassing on his te
Nell really couldnāt believe his audacity. āWill this take long, Alpha?ā she countered. āIām kinda busy right now,ā he told her. When he moved aside and she saw the half-naked she-wolf lounging on his couch, the blush was inevitable. Yet she couldnāt understand why she was so angry. āI thought you were partial to redheads.ā āDid you now?ā āYouāre impossible,ā she stormed, resisting the temptation to stamp her foot. āDonāt tell me youāre jealous? You are, arenāt you?ā She turned on her heel and was about to march off in the wrong direction when his voice stopped her in her tracks. āHenry was right. He said you had a little crush on me. Well, as you can see, youāre not the only one. You can go now, Selina,ā he added. Sulking, the beauty slunk away without even bothering to retrieve her top. If Nell didnāt know better she would have thought it had been staged for her benefit. āIs that all, Alpha? If so, Iāll bid you goodnight.ā āNot so fast.ā Relieved not to be within his gras
Liam didnāt get much sleep. Heād hated the whole idea of a party and taken his resentment out on the one person who deserved it least. Over-indulging had been a way of avoiding the consequences but he didnāt have the headache which would have alleviated some of his guilt. He doubted Nell had noticed his inebriation; she probably couldnāt tell the difference. Though he seemed to recall foolishly telling her about Simon.Give these females an inch and they wanted the whole fucking mile. Like the one whoād emerged from his en suite unexpectedly wearing little more than a grin. It wasnāt the first time that had happened to him and he doubted it would be the last. Nell had been shocked, bewildered and ultimately, disbelieving when she saw Selina lounging on his couch. He could see it in her face, she suspected him of setting out to trap her into something offensive to her sensibilities. A very moral woman, Nell, unlike her slut of a sister. Even he could see that much.Sometimes, in her co
It was her midwifery skills they wanted rather than her lifeās blood. Despite herself, Nell was curious.āWill you break the news to Alpha Liam?āThe Beta seemed to understand, even though he was still on all fours and lolloped away in the direction of the packhouse.Poor Jack. She didnāt envy him delivering that piece of information. But if this helped to forge a new alliance, who knew were it might lead? That was all to the good. Sheād seen for herself the mingling of different species in the colony. Was she being naĆÆve? Only time would tell.It turned out that she was about to bring yet another hybrid into the world. The human female was yet to be turned and that decision was on hold depending on whether or not her offspring lived and thrived. She was part of history. Fancy that.Alpha Liam was mad, of course, telling her she could have been killed.āNot when Iām performing a service,ā she countered.āAnd when your usefulness was at an end?āāVampires arenāt vindictive, just needy,
He didnāt have long, but you never knew with his kind. Perhaps loving Electra ā had he ever known her real name? ā had endowed him with more years. In any case Nell couldnāt forget the bond theyād shared. It was only right Sheriff Bostock released him. As a full-blooded werewolf he needed to face pack justice. Technically, that should be Far Hills, where he had been working and since he had wounded Alpha Warrenās daughter. Still, heād been aiming for Simon and his instincts hadnāt been as far off the mark as his aim on that occasion. When heād attempted to kill Liam at the mall, in his crazed state heād assumed he was Simon. If Rae, her father and her mate, the Alpha King, didnāt want to press charges for the first incident, it was down to the Alpha of the Wide River pack to consider if he wanted to wreak a personal revenge on his mateās father.Liam didnāt. He wasnāt that vindictive an Alpha. He even indicated Martin Field was welcome to see out his days with them, though not in so m
It took two whole days for Nell to heal, no thanks to her she-wolf side. Rose was a shadow of what she should be and Thom was both anxious and restless. He wanted to mount her but Liam managed to calm him down after a frustrating inner dialogue. Why not?Sheās too fragile.Thatās the point. My mate needs stimulation.Eventually, maybe.No. Now!In the end he went for a cold shower. He was beginning to wish Pamela hadnāt left the pack for pastures new at the same time as the departure of Simon and his cronies. Whether it was just coincidence or not he supposed he would never know, unless she slunk back and resumed her sluttish ways. Not even Nell had felt sorry for her once he explained it was in her nature and she hadnāt been forced to fuck at least half the unmated warriors.Ida came to see him a short while later. Liam was in his office, drowning in paperwork which he was having to read twice.āAny good at matesā rights?ā he asked, pulling a face.āWhat? Oh no, hardly.āHe hadnāt me
Keeping a cool head was usually second nature to him, but this one was personal. He felt closer to Nell than anyone and was hoping to meet her pups soon. Alpha Liam was part of the clan, even if tenuously, though it was hard to accept Simon as one of them. He preferred to think all the elf genes had gone into the younger twin.Water. The thought whizzed into his head and he realised Nell was in a panic. Going into a trance state he travelled over the geographical features in the vicinity and came to the conclusion she meant him to join her at a fall of water. Could he contact the sprite? There was no harm in trying.Afterwards, he set off at a run, his pointed boots gliding slightly above the grass and soil. The scene which met his eyes was a perilous one. Still safely cloaked in a shield of invisibility, he decided not to communicate with his half-sister. It seemed she was shocked enough already.A she-wolf lay prone, unmoving, yet he sensed a rapid heartbeat.āIsnāt it done yet? Why
We lost Nell.Liamās blood ran cold when the unusual transmission came through.Robin?Melas. My nephew is tracking them.Where are you?But there was no further message and he hit the wall in frustration, belatedly realising it wasnāt his own office he was damaging.āSorry, Alpha King.āāUnderstandable.āThe older man came across and began to inspect a crack in the plaster. Liam was convinced this was a wind-up. He was sure it had been there before.āStop messing with his head, Alpha,ā Rae dared. She was flicking through a fashion magazine yet it was clear to Liam it was only a prop to keep her hands busy. Biting her nails had come and gone, as had fidgeting.Brock growled, though it sounded playful to him. He was glad sheād found her special someone. Whether they were fated mates or not was nothing to do with him.Taking a risk, he shared what he knew. It still seemed incredible to him that he may have elvish blood.āI donāt think sheās dead.āLiam winced at the word heād used. One
The Alpha King was deeply offended. He kept saying so to his security detail in front of a woozy Liam. At least the bleeding had stopped, thanks to his wolfās superb healing abilities. Thom was both angry and whiny, distressed because he could no longer talk to Rose. What was that about? Was Nell so far away? Invisible, maybe. No, she wouldnāt do that to Ida.Unless she was in contact with her elvish kin. Rose would take a back seat if that were the case.Rae had insisted on tending to his injuries personally.āThis is all my fault,ā she said. āI should have overseen the issuing of the invitations. A plus one card went by courier to the Red Moon pack. When I found out I assumed they would decline or that Alpha Leo would attend just to show his face.āāDoes Alpha Brock know?āShe nodded.āHeās very angry with me for the slip up, though doesnāt blame me for ā well, what happened afterwards. Do you?āLiam could hardly say so when she was dabbing at his head wound so carefully.āMaybe thi
They didnāt spot the gatecrashers at first. Most people were being announced; not this pair. Liamās hackles rose immediately on seeing Jessica, the black-haired stunner heād denied, and sure enough, Simon wasnāt far behind. Theyād chosen the same colour suit, charcoal, he and his twin, which was less of a surprise than the coupleās audacity. How dare they intrude on what was supposed to be Nellās belated special day? Though he supposed he should cut the she-wolf some slack. Even though there was no longer any mate bond connection, still he felt a tug of sympathy and something else less easy to define. His mate was simply ravishing in a golden ballgown and matching accessories. Holly had been delighted to help her select the right clutch and shoes, though Nell had chosen the dress herself. Off one shoulder, it complemented her new height, though his cousin had reported back she was apt to look through the petite rack. That made him smile. Alpha Brock had warned Nell he would claim
The pups arrived early, a girl and a boy just as her elvish mother had foretold. Nell was stuck for a name for her daughter and then she remembered the no-nonsense she-wolf Liam had met at that ball. Ida seemed to suit the baby, who relaxed whenever she lengthened the two syllables which identified her. Their son was to be known as Cal. She felt close to him, too, just not in the same way. It had been intriguing to discover elves had physically interacted with the pack before and that their blood was in the Alphaās veins, the ethereal nature of their culture part of his DNA. Simonās, too. Nothing had been heard from him for months but he lurked at the edge of her consciousness like the threat of the boogeyman which had disturbed her childhood dreams. Olivia was due to stand trial for murder soon. The remains of Rosemary Worthington Field were currently resting on a coronerās slab while all the relevant forensic investigations were being undertaken. She supposed it would fall to her
Heād had time to think both before and after Raeās arrival. Theyād had a decent heart-to-heart as well. She deserved better than Si, that was for sure. Hearing that his twin was planning to oust him wasnāt a surprise ā once, he would have welcomed the notion ā but, for Nellās sake, that couldnāt be allowed to happen.Liam knew she didnāt care for status given her appalling background circumstances. At least it hadnāt been all bad, though Martin Field was never going to be the same again. He was all she had now, him, the pups, the pack and not to forget the elves, though it wouldnāt be practical to live with them.Could he permit his hybrid pup to live elsewhere? Only if certain conditions were fulfilled. Heād want to see her regularly, that was for sure, and not because he didnāt trust Melas and Robin. After all, he was basing this on a prophecy delivered by Nellās dying elf mother, something he had never thought to question. When Simon came by, in something of a hurry, he didnāt know
