Eva stood behind her curtainless window staring at the beautiful trees that were well aligned in her mom's garden, very close to her bedroom window. She drew in oxygen from the trees' youthful air into her lungs and grinned.
She stared down and admired some of the tree branches that had gone haywire. She wondered why her maids left the branches untrimmed.
Eva was so obsessed with nature. She loved trees and talked to them as though they were humans. She saw them as the best gift given to humanity. That was why her parents gave her one of the rooms that faced the trees.
They also had the bedroom curtain removed and mounted a shelf in front of the bedroom window for partial coverage. Her parents filled the shelf with a house plant in a decorative vase.
When she was a child, she would stand behind the shelf and stare at the trees, loving how they swayed when a soft breeze blew.
She ran to her bedroom and stared at the trees whenever she was annoyed. She found the view quite therapeutic.
A feeling of joy crept through her as she stood behind her window, inhaling some fresh air. Her wedding came up in six days and everything had been arranged.
They had finalized the seating arrangements and sent them to the wedding planner.
James had earlier double-checked their flight time, confirmed their hotel bookings and dinner reservations.
James's father loved him so much, so he invested a lot of money in his son's wedding. The news about their wedding had become a top search on the internet and the latest trend on social media. People couldn't wait to watch the wedding videos.
Eva turned gracefully when her bedroom door swung slowly. Her mom and her maids stood behind the door staring at her with smiles on their faces.
Eva looked down at the wrapped gifts the maid were carrying, tilted her brows, and grinned. People had been sending gifts to her since the news of her wedding went viral on the internet.
"Sweetheart, I was about to come to your house when Leah told me you were here," Molly said as she began to walk towards her. Leah was one of her maids.
"Mom, I went to a jeweler to get our rings professionally cleaned. I want to add more sparkling to them," Eva grinned, stared at the rings she kept on a table, and looked through the window again. "I missed my favorite view already."
"Thank God you are here. Eva, you don't pick up a wedding dress and save it till the day of your wedding. You need to try on the full ensemble, including shoes and jewelry to finalize your look.
You will walk down the aisle in six days and you need to practice and make sure everything feels comfortable.
Your shoes are brand new, and you will be wearing them for a while on the big day. You also need to wear them for a short period each day and walk around the house on different surfaces.
Eva, Bruce Daniels is a very influential person and you know his friends are moneybags. I want everything to breathe perfection!" Molly smirked.
Eva walked towards the gifts the maids kept on her bed with smiles. Her mom sat down on one of the sofas in her bedroom. She was holding about ten envelopes from her friends and well-wishers. She began to pass the envelopes to her daughter one by one.
The last envelope looked so familiar, Eva's face changed when she saw it. She sighed and stood up from the bed.
Molly looked at the envelope and wondered why the sudden mood swing. She became worried as the envelope looked quite different.
"Sweetheart, is there anything I should know?" Molly asked.
"No, not at all mom. It's something I can handle." Eva replied. Molly frowned her brows. Eva was her only child and she had been the one handling her affairs.
"Have you been receiving a letter with this kind of envelope, sweetheart?" Molly asked. Eva nodded without looking at her.
"Who is the sender?"
"Julian Hampton."
"Julian Hampton, the famous footballer?" Molly asked with her hands akimbo.
"According to the address he included in his first letter, yes. I checked the internet, it was his residential address."
"What does he want from you?"
"I don't know mom."
"Is James aware he's been sending letters to you?"
"Yes," Eva responded.
"What did he say?"
"Nothing, I...mean what would he say?" Eva sputtered.
"You don't know what he wants. Does it mean he never included his intention in any of the letters?" Molly asked.
"The first letter was an invitation to come and see him, but James, after reading the letter, thinks there is more to it. The second letter was more like blackmail. He said he wants to know why I did it….but you know what mom, I don't care!"
Molly turned and signaled her maids to leave the bedroom. They all stood up and walked out. They were enjoying the small drama and wanted to know what was inside the envelope.
"What did you do, sweetheart, talk to me, I'm your mother," Molly moved closer to her.
"Nothing, mom."
"Think, my dear; you must have done something to him unknowingly," Molly said with a smooth and low voice.
"Mom, I haven't seen Julian in person. I only see him on the television, in newspapers, and on social media. I don't need to think, because I'm sure I did nothing to him." Eva said. "Mom, give me the envelope, I need to get it burnt. You won't like what's inside, trust me," Eva tried to take the envelope from her mom, she quickly hid the envelope behind her back.
"If you are sure you are telling me the truth, then allow me to read what he wrote," Molly said, still hiding the envelope behind her back.
"Just make sure you dispose it properly after going through it," Eva picked her car key and her diamond ring from the table and began to walk towards the door. "No one can stop the wedding," she muttered on her way out.
"Wait, Eva!" Molly said. "Are you sure you don't want to read what he sent to you?" Molly asked. Eva waved at her and began to hurry down the stairs.
Molly glanced down at the envelope and began to open it slowly.
"Oh my god!" She screamed and sank into a sofa.
Eva walked back to the bedroom to take the phone she left on her bed, she saw her mom staring into space with tears racing down her eyes.
She walked slowly towards her. She knew the content of the letter was the reason why she was crying. Probably, she had read the part where Julian threatened to turn her wedding day into a day of weeping.
Eva stood still and continued staring at her mom.
"Mom, I wanted to set the envelope and the letter ablaze, but you declined. If I had burnt it, you wouldn't be here crying over it."
"It...is... not... a...letter," Molly stammered with a tear-smothered voice, without looking at her daughter.
Eva, who did not care about the envelope and its content became panic-stricken. There was a chilled black silence in the bedroom. She couldn't control the spasmodic trembling in her hand as she lowered her hand to take the envelope from her mom.
Eva took the envelope from her mom. She hesitated for some minutes. Her fear was stronger than ever and her heart beat willy-nilly. She breathed in shallow, quick gasps as she flipped the cover. It was an old picture of a woman. She looked at her mom as she slowly pulled the picture out of the envelope. A glazed look of despair began to spread over her face. Tears slowly found their way down her cheeks. Eva did not see anything that could stop her wedding. However, after looking at the picture, she realized her chances of wedding James were very slim. The picture showed Julian knew something about one of her maids who died six years ago. She walked slowly towards her bed and sat down. Eva noticed there was a short note at the back of the picture. She read it out. "Now you know what you did, please come along with the picture and don't breathe a word to anyone."Eva stood up from the bed and grabbed her car keys. "Where are you off to?" Molly asked with a shaky voice. "I'm off to
Eva's heart began to beat so hard as though it would jump out of her chest when Roy, the chauffeur, took the private road that led to Julian's mega-mansion. There were heavily armed security men at the entrance of the road. They waved at them and Roy cleared by the side of the road. One of the security men walked up to them to confirm their identities. James wound down the glass when he saw him coming towards them. "No one comes here without his invitation, so what's your name? He asked, pointing at James. "I'm James Daniels," James responded. The security man looked at the gadget he was holding and shook his head. "Your names, please?" He asked again, fixing his gaze on the gadget. "I'm Roy
James began to pace around the mini-stadium looking at the mansion. He regretted ever allowing her to go in there without her phone. Now, there was no way he could reach her to know what was happening there. He kept snapping his fingers with annoyance. Molly came out of the car when she got tired of waiting too. They both stood behind the car and were staring at the house.Richard kept calling his wife on the phone and got tired of calling. It was getting dark already, yet there was no sign of Eva.Julian stood behind the window with his hands in the pockets of his tight jersey, staring at them. His face was a glowering mask of rage.He turned when he felt a strong hand on his shoulder, it was Carlos. Carlos was his childhood friend. He had not le
James held Eva tight as they drove home. He kept looking into her eyes, seeking for answers since Eva had refused to answer any of his questions. She was short of words.Roy pulled over when they got home. James help her down and led her to the family's lounge. He sat beside her and kept staring at her. He could not stop himself from pondering."She needs to eat and rest," a voice said.James turned and saw Richard staring at him. He was not smiling at all. James became sick with concerns. He knew they were withholding something, but he did not care. He wished they would see through him.He skimmed a gentle kiss across her forehead and bade her farewell. Eva lifted her gaze and bobbed. Richard sat beside his
Eva drove out the next day to meet Julian. She kept pondering how to get past the checkpoint as she was not on the invitation. She wound down her glass when she got to his private lane, none of the logisticians said anything to her. It was as though they had been informed about her coming, or probably, she came alone. Eva did not know why she was given easy passage. She pulled over behind the mini Stadium and began to walk towards the foyer. She was ready to take anything he would throw at her. She just needed one thing; his pardon. One of his domestic staff led her to the living and offered her a seat. She never knew Julian was in the control room with his friend watching her as she walked majestically towards the foyer. "Did you deliver my message to her?" Julian asked. Carlos looked through the window again and smirked. "Oh yes, I did." "What does she want?" Julian asked. "Beg for mercy, I guess," Carlos smirked again. "Okay, let's go," Julian stood up and smirked wickedly.
Tears covered Eva's eyes as she drove out of Julian's mansion. She kept wiping her tears with a handkerchief. She recalled all the mistakes she made when she was a teenager. Tears covered up her eyes and her lower lips began to twitch. She picked up her phone and sent a quick message to her father. James swept her into his arms when she pulled over and alighted. He looked into her eyes and felt like taking whatever that was bothering her upon himself. He walked slowly towards her bedroom. He lowered her on the bed gently and planted a kiss on her forehead. Eva drew him closer and began to smooch his lips. James was quite surprised because Eva had never done that. She hardly responds to his kisses. Burying his hand in her golden hair, James returned her kiss with delight. His mouth covered her lips. The kiss sent spirals of ecstasy through him and their legs intertwined. James pulled himself away when she began to sort the buttons of his T-shirt. Her action w
Julian examined the signed agreements to see if they were properly signed. He dropped the papers on the tables and fixed his wicked eyes on Eva who had her gaze lowered. "The wedding is tomorrow at Church of our ladies. Be there before noon. I don't want to see anyone except your maid of honor, your parents, and your chauffeur. You will taste my wrath if I make headlines tomorrow. Be as secretive as you can be. No one should hear this except the people I mentioned." Julian said. "Which wedding gown should I use?" Eva muttered slowly. "You have a wedding in five days, I'm sure you must have taken care of your wedding gown." "That's James's taste, he ordered for it," Eva said again without looking at his face.
It was morning already and Eva woke up, grabbing a cup of coffee one her domestic staff kept on a table that was close to her window. She moved towards the window and opened up the shades. She liked to breathe in the fresh air every morning and listen to the chirping of birds. The routine made her feel like she was in nature's palm. It calms her down when her mind was occupied with negative emotions. She put on her favorite music to help uplift her and positively engage her senses which were about to go haywire. The hypnotic time of the day was her favorite time. Eva stood behind her window, watched as the day changes from multi-color to blue. The quietness and tranquility of the day, made her feel as if she was the only person on the planet, and the rich world was being unrolled in front of her like rol
