Skylar's POV
I picked up the cup of coffee he brought for me and wrapped my fingers around it. It was scalding hot, too strong for me—and exactly perfect to scare off the heavy sleep that was nagging on my eyelids. I was glad Alex had remembered to bring my morning coffee.
"It took some real hard work to wake you up in the mornings. Especially Mondays." He pointed out. "Now, all it takes is one horn of the car and you come out."
"Uh-huh." I murmured, pulling off my hair tie from my wrist and tying up my hair in a loose ponytail.
"Is it because of that gang stuff you were telling me about?" He asked, glancing at me with a small frown.
I let out a deep sigh and placed my fore
Skylar's POVMy first instinct was to freak out. And I did, so much so that when the person behind me turned me around, I gripped the candle stand in my hands and hit him with it. Not just once, but repeatedly. Mainly because his grip around my waist was still strong, freaking me out even more. "Ow! Skylar, what the hell?" Caden hissed at me.The candle stand fell from my hands in surprise, the impact of it against the floor resulting in a sharp thud. "Caden?" My voice came out in a strained squeak. "Oh God, I'm so sorry!" He pulled up his brows in a frown and was probably about to say something when he jerked his head towards my backdoor, his features clouding with alarm. I followed his gaze despite the uneasy feeling inside me because of the closeness, and saw absolutely noth
Skylar's POVI didn't know how I was still standing on my own two feet when that little act had drained enough energy from inside me. Caden, on the other hand, looked totally the opposite; calm and unbothered.I leaned back against the wall as I saw him opening the door. All my senses had gone haywire, I didn't even feel the surprise when I saw that familiar redhead guy –Seth– and Shane coming inside. I didn't even know how to respond when Shane passed me a casual smirk, Seth giving me a small wave of acknowledgement from behind him.Seth looked back at Caden and I saw him speak out some words before Caden took out a small card from his pocket, passing it to him.Why did he look so unbothered? Why
Skylar's POVTwo days had passed by.Mom and Dad still hadn't returned back from their trip and I didn't bother asking them about it again. They were probably just trying to prolong it even more, trying to come up with something to tell me. And I had a feeling they won't be telling me the truth. If they wanted to, they would've told me everything on that phone call. But they hadn't. And I wouldn't let go of it so easily. I think I deserved an explanation. In school, things went on the same. I didn't see Caden after the thing that happened at my house. I didn't see him in the school hallways, and if he ever came across me, he didn't bother to talk either.A part of me didn't want to see him too, and the other part of me felt gu
Skylar's POVI needed some time away from all of this mess; my parents, the locker which I still knew nothing about, and my Physics grades—which were flunking, to be honest. There was a grand test next week, thanks to our beloved Physics teacher, and of course, I needed to get an A in this test. I was hundred percent sure that I'd fail Physics if I didn't get an A this time. That is how I was imagining my life to end, just because of a goddamn subject. Mom would be so pissed off.Why did I even care? She was hiding big stuff from me, dad too. They wouldn't be able to blame it on me if I failed in Physics.Apart from that, the other thing that was concerning me the most was A
Skylar's POV"I'm so happy that you won!" I shouted gleefully before throwing my arms around Alex in a huge hug. And then I pulled away just as quick. "Ew. You reek." He laughed and threw an arm around me, not letting me go. And God, he really did smell bad. "You came, Sky!" He seemed so happy. "What changed your mind?"I shrugged and smiled back. "Somebody convinced me not to make Caden my first priority.'' He faced me and furrowed his brows a little. "Who? Was it that guy you were cheering so loudly with?"I rolled my eyes and managed a small, embarrassed laugh. Alex smiled back, but a bit hesitatingly. Or maybe it was just my imagina
Skylar's POVI mean it, Sky.I woke up with a start, those strange words ringing faintly in my ears. And then someone knocked on the door loudly-my bedroom door."Skylar, wake up!"I blinked open my eyes groggily and sat up. A small groan escaped my lips at the bright sunlight as I tried rubbing the drowsiness from my face. Looking around, I realized I was in my room. And then everything came crashing down upon me. Literally."Geez." I whispered, clutching onto my head. I couldn't even explain how bad my head ached at that moment. My throat had go
Skylar's POVThis was my fifth and the final attempt to open the car door, which in that moment was all I could opt for, even if the car was moving. I was so sure I'd get out this time. So sure. But to my utter dismay, the door didn't budge at all."Open the fucking door, Caden!" I shouted in frustration. He glanced at me from the driver's seat and just that one glance told me how much he was regretting bringing me along with him. Which brought me back to the fact that he had dragged me out of school against my will, during my only free period, and forced me to get inside his car as he drove to God knows where."I'm not opening it, Anderson." He muttered, looking into the rearview mirror.I tried opening the door again
Skylar's POVWe ended up somewhere that looked like a rugged, old town. It wasn't our town, mainly because it was deserted and way too small. I wanted to leave this place, but when I saw a store nearby I had to practically beg Caden to stop there. My feet were killing me at this point. The shopkeeper was kind enough to lend his phone charger for Caden's phone and I was more than thankful to find a chair to sit down on."Thank you for letting us stay." I directed a small, grateful smile towards the shopkeeper as Caden walked inside the shop. The shopkeeper guy, who was alm
Skylar's POV "Where's Hanna?" Juliette asked, stopping by my locker and making an emphasis by raising her brows a bit too high. "And Alexander?"I never understood why she loved calling Alex by his full name. It seemed very formal for some reason."They skipped school to go on a morning date." I said –more like grumbled– as I pulled out my Calculus book. Her nose scrunched up ever so slightly before a snicker escaped her lips. Juliette had been one of the students from the foreign exchange program few months ago. What surprised me, though, was that she had chosen to be my friend, instead of just fitting in with the popular group—she definitely had those looks."And why do you sound so angry about that?" She asked, tw
Skylar's POVFuck. My head hurt. My throat hurt. My lungs hurt. My heart hurt. My limbs hurt. Every part of my body hurt.So bad.I would've groaned out loud in pain if only I had it in me to form any sort of sound from my mouth. I didn't even know how to move any part of my body.It took everything inside me to finally move my fingers. And then I opened my eyes, which at first was a bit hard, but my vision adjusted at the empty white ceiling eventually. After few more seconds, I finally managed to look around the strangely unfamiliar room. It was a hospital. And God, my head hurt so bad.
Skylar's POVAs if realizing that I was still present here, Blake's gaze fell upon me once again."What lies did he feed you, Sky?" He asked me, circling the disk in his hand. He seemed like he was enjoying every bits of it.I wasn't."What do you mean?" I whispered, momentarily forgetting that there was still a gun pressed onto my forehead."Well, let me guess." He said before passing Caden a knowing smirk. "What did he tell you about our parents?"I gulped heavily, my eyes darting from Blake to Caden. A feeling of unease washed over me, almost as if I knew what was coming. I just really hoped that it wasn't true—whatever possibilities my head was coming up with at that moment."Fire." My voice rose above a whisper, and it was deadly silent a
Skylar's POVThe State Museum of Harrisburg was enormous. The only museum that seemed to intrigue me as I stood outside of it, along with the others.I forced myself to look back at Caden as he spoke up, "Adrian, you'll be going inside. Find that specific statue, and get that disk." His voice was low but commanding at the same time. "And you two," He looked over at Shane and Jesse. "You'll keep an eye on the borders and around the museum for Blake or his men. I've made sure to back you up with few other guys."I couldn't help but look over at the huge entrance once again. There were a lot of people here, crowding outside the museum. Who the hell loved going to a museum first thing in the morning?"Well, I'll need some back up too." Adrian announced, sliding in two small, sharp knives in the back of his
Skylar's POV"So," I started. "That last metal disc is supposedly the only way to open those underground vaults."It was somewhere past noon right now and the train station was almost brimming with people. I could see the dense crowd from the window beside me; both Caden and I already seated inside the train. I had traveled to Philly before, to see Dad when he was in the hospital, but Mom still hadn't been willing to let me go.It had taken me hours to actually persuade her."Yes." Caden glanced at me and I noticed his stiffened posture beside me. "The red crystal is said to be in there somewhere."I looked away from his face, settling my gaze at the window once again. "What if those vaults don't even exist anymore?" If they were centuries-old, what guarantee did we have that they were even...intact?
Skylar's POVOnce I was done with the breakfast, which was so not less embarrassing, I tried calling my mother. The breakfast hadn't been bad. I kind of loved the company of all of these boys. They felt like a family to me.A very embarrassing family."Mom, why don't you pick up on the first ring?" I asked her when she picked up the call."I was busy, Skylar." She said. "Why are you calling from your school?"I looked outside from the glass doors, at the beautiful, lavish garden. "I'm not at school."
Skylar's POVI was embarrassed.Highly embarrassed."Come on, bro! I thought somebody broke in." I saw Shane whining before he threw himself on the couch."But this sight was more...nice." Jesse smirked, glancing at Adrian with a knowing look.I placed a hand over my burning face, trying to hide the mortification I felt at that moment. My entire face was heating up, so much so that I could even see red now. Caden tugged me closer by my waist, nuzzling into my neck, his dark black hair inches from my nose.Did he even care that I was practically dying out of embarrassment
Skylar's POVWhen Caden stopped his car in front of a house, it didn't take the full-on heavy rain to hide the big structure from me. I could clearly make it out.And I knew that house.Everything about it was similar to the house I had seen on my phone, when I had been searching on the web. It was the same house with those scorch marks on the walls. It took me few seconds to finally find my voice, my gaze still fixated on the house. "Why are we here?" It looked empty and isolated—not just the house, but the entire street."My parent's house." I heard him say.As if putting two and two together, I leaned back against my seat. I didn't want to come up with any rash conclusions, but it still felt a bit hard to breathe. When I glanced over at Caden, I realized that his gaze was, just like
Skylar's POV"—it isn't bad here. I like this school." Brody said.I wasn't exactly paying attention to whatever he had been saying, especially since I was tired as hell. I didn't get to have much sleep last night. Between those overwhelming thoughts and one specific nightmare about Alex, it was a bit hard to sleep. Every few minutes later I had to keep on reassuring myself that no one was breaking in my house, not when Mom and Dad were still here.I just missed Alex."Hey," It was when Brody gently nudged my shoulder with his, that I looked at him. "Why do you seem so down today?"I was counting by the seconds, waiting for this class to get over. Since the teacher wasn't present today, the substitute one had given us a free period. And that just gave the others to talk loudly, not letting me have even
