Hennessey's POV
My sister should probably be married to that jerk by now. The thought gnawed at me. She didn’t want any of this, but neither did she want me trapped in a marriage set for her. Like a coward, I was running away again.
I stared blankly out the window, the hum of the plane around me as the pilot made his announcement. My heart clenched. I had contributed to this mess. My mission was to make him hate her, but instead, I made him desire her more. That man hated my guts, and that damned contract... My heart twisted just thinking about the pain Helena would have to endure.
No. There was still time, I hoped. I stood up, my mind set on ruining her wedding—even if it had already happened. I wouldn’t leave her again—not now that I had some power over my own life. My parents could disown me, but Helena needed me more than ever.
Before I could even take a step, men in uniform appeared, causing a ripple of panic through the plane.
“Miss Hennessey Wilson, show yourself. You are wanted,” the burly man in black barked, his voice cutting through the confusion. His colleagues moved quickly, scanning the rows.
I froze, my throat tightening. Slowly, I raised my hands. “I… I’m here.”
The lieutenant saw me, and before I could even react, two men were on me, their hands rough as they twisted my arms behind me.
“You will cooperate, or we will use force,” one threatened, his fingers digging painfully into my skin.
I squirmed, my breath catching. “You’re hurting me! What’s going on? What crime have I committed? This is a violation of my rights!”
My protests bounced off them like stones. No one answered, no explanation given. Instead, they shoved me toward a van with “ESSS” stamped across the side. Economic State Security Service? They dealt with financial criminals, not people like me.SO what did they want from me?
I felt a hot surge of anger flood my chest. “You’re violating my human rights!” I shouted as they shoved me inside. “I want my lawyer. I won’t speak until I see him.”
But my demands fell on deaf ears. The men beside me remained unnervingly silent, their grim expressions unchanging. As they forced me to sit, I realized something—this wasn’t just an arrest. It felt like a kidnapping.
I kicked my legs, thrashing against their iron grip, but it only made them press down harder, forcing me flat against the van’s cold metal floor.
“Will you stay still, you fucking bitch?” the lieutenant in front sneered, his breath hot and foul.
I laughed, though it came out shaky and bitter. “This is a kidnapping, isn’t it? Well, newsflash—my parents are broke. You’ve got the wrong person!”
They ignored me again, their faces impassive. The van lurched forward, and I realized the futility of my outbursts. The car was soundproof, and the engine hummed steadily, almost as if everything they were doing was somehow... legal. But it wasn’t, not with the stench of stale cigarettes and unwashed bodies choking the air. I tried not to gag, but the smell was overwhelming, a thick cloud of rot that made my stomach churn. I couldn’t tell which was worse—the foul odor or the fear creeping up my spine.
Almost twenty minutes later, the van came to a halt, and I was shoved out once again. The harsh light of the sun barely pierced my eyes before I was forced to move. I looked ahead, and dread filled my core. We were at the headquarters of ESSS, boldly emblazoned at the top of the five-story building.
The men continued their mistreatment as we entered the building, their colleagues—both male and female—minding their business while men twice my size treated me like a terrorist. I was shoved into an elevator, this time with only the lieutenant and one other agent.
Sweat drenched my forehead, my hands trembling at my sides. “Wha-why am I here?” I asked, but they didn’t answer.
I was led into a room where unexpected faces greeted me. My parents and twin were all handcuffed, sitting in the room as if they were waiting for me all along.
“Henn!” my sister rasped, trying to hug me, but the agent pushed her back down. “I thought you already left. Why are you still here?”
Tears filled my eyes as I smiled sarcastically. “Sister over freedom.”
Helena burst into tears while smiling. “You should have gone. Now we’re both in deep shit,” she joked.
The lieutenant shoved me by her side, thankfully, before he and the agent exited.
I turned to my sister, slightly frowning as I assessed her appearance. She was still in her wedding dress, and my parents also looked dressed for the occasion. What exactly had happened?
Before I could ask, my mother spat venom at me. “This is all your fault. If only you’d stayed where you were, none of this would have happened.”
I had been expecting her attack, but it was my father who terrified me. He sat there, staring at the door, his gaze cold and icy. He was the only one who hadn’t known about my return, and I could see the abuse he’d rained down on me days ago in his thoughts—directed now at Helena. I knew he wanted to kill me, and that thought made my stomach drop.
The doors finally opened after a long, suffocating silence. In walked Kellen, dressed in a three-piece tuxedo, presumably for his wedding. His eyes burned with untamed anger, and those furious eyes were fixed on me, unblinking, as he approached.
He sat in the seat prepared for him, facing me and my family. His eyes shot daggers at me, and it felt as though my soul was being torn from my body. I had never seen anyone so angry, not even my father.
Then, suddenly, he laughed. The sound was maniacally cold, echoing through the room before it abruptly stopped. His gaze never left me. “I’ll be damned. Hennessey Wilson fooled me twice.”
Hennessey’s POV“What is this?” I yelled, surging to my feet. My voice cracked under the weight of anger and fear. “Why are you treating my family like this?”The lieutenant stepped forward, his face a mask of cold authority. “Sit down, ma’am, or I will make you.”Before I could respond, Kellen raised a hand, halting him. His glare was sharp, cutting through the tension. “Don’t cross your boundaries,” he snapped, his tone low and deadly. Then, he turned back to me, his fury barely contained. “Did you really think I’d let your family go after the massive economic fraud they tried to pull on me?”I scoffed, my disbelief laced with defiance. “What fraud? Didn’t you want to marry my sister?”“I did—but you took that away from me.” His voice cracked like a whip, and he jabbed a finger toward me. “It’s all your fault. You’re nothing but criminals.”The handcuffs bit into my wrists as I strained against them, my whole body trembling with fury. “My sister did nothing wrong! She went to the al
Hennessey’s POVThe drive back to Kellen’s estate was even colder than the first. I wanted to mention my bags still stranded at the airport, but I didn’t have the energy. My mind kept circling back to the woman I’d seen at the registrar’s office. Her face was familiar, though I couldn’t place where I’d seen her before—or why she looked like she’d kill me if given the chance. Had I already made an enemy after barely a day of marriage to Masssles Country’s former most eligible bachelor? The unanswered questions lingered, gnawing at me until the car slowed to a stop. I stared in awe at the sprawling white mansion in front of us. The golden cupid fountain in the driveway gleamed under the sunlight, surrounded by meticulously trimmed greenery. The estate exuded grandeur, but the heavy presence of security guards gave it an unsettling air, more fortress than home. It was beautiful, far grander than the mansion my father had always cherished.“Do you plan on sleeping in the car?” Kellen’s sa
Henessey’s POV“You are perfect. Let’s get married,” Kellen declared, not even blinking. My eyes widened. “What?” I stammered, unable to believe my ears. “Are you serious? Have you lost it?”Kellen seemed completely relaxed as he sipped his wine, his tailored suit accentuating his broad shoulders. His piercing cognac brown eyes bore into mine as he spoke, his perfectly styled hair giving him an air of confident sophistication. “No, Miss Wilson. Quite the opposite,” he said with a small smile playing on his lips. “I like your honesty. Your attitude might not be accepted by many men, but you're exactly what I want.”I shook my head vigorously. “No, you have lost your mind.” I stood up, grabbing my purse. I was ready to leave and inadvertently noticed Kellen's strong but seductive cologne and the crisp cut of his jawline. It was a pity that I had no interest in such a fine man.“I’ve already informed your parents that I’ve accepted,” he said, stopping me in my tracks. My jaw dropped. “Yo
Henessey’s POV“Wu-what—how are you here?” I stuttered, my mind reeling.Kellen raised an eyebrow. “What do you think?”“No, no, no.” I ran my hands through my hair, feeling my world shatter. “What have I done?” This can't be. I’m not that foolish. I lifted my head, anger flashing in my eyes as a terrible speculation took root. “You…” I jabbed a finger at the sun-kissed, muscular man. “You did this to me.”Kellen scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief. “Do you really think I would force myself on you?”“Yes,” I said firmly. “I think you can do that.”He chuckled mockingly, stepping closer from the other end of the bed. Subconsciously, I backed away until I was up against the wall. “When I met you, I thought you were a classy lady.” He smirked, his eyes trailing down my neck to my nakenes . “I never knew you were this easy.”Without thinking, I struck Kellen ’s cheek, his head snapping to the side from the impact. “Don’t you ever disrespect me. Henessey’s POVMy eyes fluttered open, but the darkness was suffocating and absolute. Kellen ’s POVThe grin on my face faltered when I noticed that Helena had no expression; she looked like she was prepared for this moment. Her green eyes sparkled with mischief. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”“I heard everything,” I said, even though I knew I was already at a disadvantage. I didn’t anticipate her cleverness.“It’s your word against mine,” she said with a smile.I was both surprised and fascinated by her quick thinking, but I wasn’t out of ideas. I turned to her parents and took her hand in mine, making a serious expression as I addressed them.“I think we shouldn’t wait any longer. Let’s proceed with the wedding,” I said, then looked at Helena and smiled warmly. “After the moment we shared during this traumatic time, I’m sure I want to spend the rest of my life with her.”Mr. Rolland, Helena’s father, clasped his hands in excitement. “Then it’s settled! We’ll begin wedding preparations immediately!”“But—”Before Helena could speak, her mother came to her
Kellen’s POV“What?!”“Please listen. My sister never agreed to this arrangement. I covered for her to sabotage the date, but for some reason, you liked me!” Henessey’s frustration was evident.“So you have been fooling me all along? I wanted Helena!” I growled, my jaw clenched in frustration. My hands were shaking with anger as I paced back and forth in front of her. “How could you have deceived me?”Henessy scoffed. “You’re one to talk. You were practically forcing me into this marriage.”I ran my fingers through my hair, struggling to keep my temper in check. “Not only did you steal your sister’s identity, but you also planned our kidnapping. How much are you gaining from all this, huh?”Henessy sighed deeply and met my gaze. Despite my anger, my pulse quickened from that small insignificant gesture. “If you want an apology, I’ll give it. But don’t accuse me of things I didn’t know about .”“Oh, of course you didn’t know,” I said coldly. “Just like you didn’t know about the guy y
