Chapter 4: The Contract Plan

last update Last Updated: 2024-10-09 04:45:25

“How could you Jane? Is that how you think of me?" Her voice shook with barely restrained fury, each word spat out as though it burned her tongue.

“Gosh..!" Luna's heart skipped a bit.

"Why is she so pissed? I hope she doesn't reject me” Luna prayed silently.

“Hey Sophia, calm down, it hasn't gotten to that. That is why I wanted us to talk things through when you come over”.

"There's nothing to talk about Jane, replace her immediately, that's final Jane" she flared and hung up the phone not letting Jane say a word.

"Did she just hang up on me? Sophia? I can't believe I was even trying to help you, asshole. Mtchewwww” she hissed and tossed the phone on the couch. Immediately her attention was drawn to Luna who had been standing quietly at the corner of the sitting room all this while listening to her conversation with Sophia. She saw the depressed expression on her face and for once felt pity for the young lady.

“There's nothing I can do Luna, just forget about the deal. It's off" She pointed out not wanting to show any sign of pity in her voice.

“I don't mean to ask for too much but can you please plead on my behalf? She might still listen to you Mrs. Jane, please help me" Luna couldn't hold back the tears, they flowed uncontrollably down her cheeks. Jane saw the sincerity in Luna's voice and immediately felt for her.

“I'm not promising you anything Luna but let's see if I can still talk to her. You can go now, you have the rest of the day off". Jane replied as she turned and walked to her room.

Luna's world crumbled before her very eyes, her only hope of getting money for her mum’s treatment was crushed and there was nowhere else to turn to. Feeling rejected, she left the apartment and headed to the hospital.

After the call, Sophia was so pissed at Jane, she couldn't imagine letting her son get married to a mere maid even though it was a contract and they were desperate.

“It hasn't gotten to that, I can't stoop so low, Jasper can't stoop so low either" she muttered to herself as brushed her teeth.

After taking a warm bath, she dressed up in her blue short dress, applied her makeup, and walked down to the dinning to eat breakfast.

The Mason family house was designed by a mastermind. The dining room was so elegant and its beauty glittered as the golden light from the crystal chandelier illuminated the room. The walls of the dining room were adorned with beautiful hand-painted wallpapers of nature.

“Good morning son, hope you had a good night's rest dear" She smiled at him while she sat on the seat close to his.

“I'm fine mum" Jasper gave a nonchalant reply not looking up from his dish.

"That's good to know Jasper” she replied as she fished out sandwiches on her golden plate.

"What's the update mum, have you found anyone yet? Jasper, who was engrossed in his meal, managed to lift his head as he waited for a reply.

"No son, not yet, I haven't gotten a suitable bride for you”

"You've not what?” Jasper frowned at his mum

"I thought Jane was helping with the search. I have barely a day to round up all preparations and you're yet to get someone? That's absurd, I can't take that mum” His brow furrowed deeply, lines scoring across his forehead as his eyes narrowed in anger.

“Calm down son, you don't have to overwork yourself. Jane did find someone but it's her maid Luna, we can't stoop so low to that level. I mean she has no class and might even make a mistake or even tell people about the contract. I don't just trust her”. Sophie explained trying to sound reasonable.

"I don't bloody care if she's a maid or whatever mum, just get her fucking ass here to sign the papers, time's running out and I'm growing out of patience”. Jasper stamped his palm so hard on the table, that he spoke through gritted teeth, his voice trembling with fury. He angrily walked to his car and zoomed off.

Jasper Mason is the CEO of Maksoft technology company, it wasn't the leading tech company in the city but it had made significant investments in technology and investments over the years. The company needed to be strengthened by signing a unique contract with MCgig which was also one of the elite tech companies but not the most prominent. For this contract to pull through asper the CEO must be married to solidify his capabilities of delivering success. He had just two

days to get everything in place which made him frustrated as plans were not aligning.

“Why is he so angry? Was I wrong to reject Luna? Hmmmm.. I can't imagine her here but there's no time, I guess I was wrong after all. What am I going to do now?” Sophia felt uneasy. She had just thrown away a golden opportunity and making it right seemed impossible.

“Will Jane forgive me for shouting at her? Damn! I even hung up on her. Shit! I'm ruined” Sophia cursed under her breath not knowing what line of action to take next. After a few minutes of deep thought, she decided to visit and apologize to her friend Jane.

“Who's it?" Jane asked at the sound of the doorbell. When she peeped through the door hole she saw her friend Sophia. At first, she thought of ignoring her as the anger she felt towards her emanated instantly but on second thought she decided to open the door. She yanked the door open with her eyes squinted, and her hands were on her hips as she glared at her.

“What do you want?" She sneered

"Can you at least let me inside?”

"Come in,” Jane said as she turned and walked inside. Sophia adjusted her dress and followed suit.

“I'm sorry Jasen, I know I offended you but please don't be angry with me" Sophia apologized as she sat on the sofa but Jane didn't twitch a bit, it was as though Sophia spoke to the wind.

“Okay, I know I messed up, I know I hung up the phone on you but I'm sorry. Here's the thing, I promise to add 40% of whatever money I'm supposed to give to you” Sophia said as she steadied her gaze on Jane hoping she would accept her offer.

At the sound of money, Jane loosened up a bit, a faint smile crossed her face and her angry face turned normal.

“Whatever" Jane snapped “It’s not like I can stay mad at you for too long”

“That's the spirit, thank you Jane” she laughed lightly, an unmistakable ring of joy in her tone.

“Any luck yet?”

"No luck Sophia. The time is too short to get a classy lady to sign a contract. These things take time, you know!”

“Yeah, I get it there's no time left. I'll have to make do with the maid. Is she still available?”

"Well, she should be, I think! There's only one way to find out though" Jane said as she grabbed

her phone from the table and placed a call to Luna.

Luna who sat beside her mum heard her phone ring. She grabbed the phone eagerly, glanced at

the caller ID, swiped, and answered.

“Hello Mrs. Jane"

"Come to my house now, you have a contract to sign” Jane commanded.

Luna apologized sincerely, not wanting to anger Jasper for the second time. “Then it's settled, but next time, I won't take this from you. Have I made myself clear?" Luna responded with a nod. “I didn't get you," Jasper said. “Yes, I understand Mr. Jasper,” Luna spoke calmly as wiped the tears from her face. “He just made me admit to a lie, what kind

He tightly pursed his lips, his face had a stony expression, and his eyes had a distant gaze. He was pissed, he couldn't recall when the last someone disobeyed his orders, but his newly married wife did. No one disobeys the CEO of Maksoft technology, absolutely, no one. Seated in the taxi, Luna's mind raced, her heart was heavy with a mix of relief and fear, and the car, even though it was moving fast, seemed to be moving slowly toward her. Each red light, each slow car in front, seemed to extend the agonizing wait. Luna walked briskly to the room where her mother lay, her face pale and drawn, but her eyes were open. "Mrs. Luna, is everything alright? Would you like me to take you to your room now?” Luna lifted her head, her eyes all red from a long sob as she stared at Ariel. “At least there's still someone reasonable around here," Luna thought. Ariel's calm voice had melted her heart, she needed to eat it. She tried to wipe the tears from her eyes but couldn't find her wipes.“Here, you can have this." Ariel stretched her handkerchief to Luna. “Thank you. What's your name?" Luna asked as she wiped her face with the handkerchief Ariel had just given her.“Oh, forgive my manners. I'm Ariel, the maid. If you need anything, just call on me,” Ariel replied, smiling broadly. She knew exactly how Luna was feeling. Staying with Mason over the years has taught her to be calm. She had felt the same way when she first came to work for them, but over time, she had gotten used to their cruel behavior. “She'll get used to it," Ariel mumbled as she sighed."Thanks for your kindness, Ariel; I'm grateful,” Luna

Luna could have sworn she shouted her feelings, but it was all fantasy. Those words stayed where they'd always been—in her mind. She moved closer to her dressing table, where Jasper had dropped the card. “Am I dreaming?” She pinched her palm to make sure she was not, then she picked up the card and stared at it intensively; she stretched her hands and picked up her phone that was at the extreme end of the table. She quickly googled what a black card looked like, and behold, it was truly a black card. A wave of emotions swept over her. Her heart was racing with anticipation. Her fingers trembled slightly as she touched the card's edges. She inhaled deeply and closed her eyes. A grin appeared on her face and grew into a happy one. She had never imagined such a gift. As she imagined the countless chances this card might present for her, tears of joy filled her eyes. “This is a dream come true." She muttered.Suddenly, a sharp knock interrupted her thoughts; she was startled by the echo

Two Months After The Shootout The courtroom had been silent when the judge read the sentence. Life Imprisonment Alexander Mason, once a feared man, had sat expressionless as the verdict was delivered. His fate had been sealed—the culmination of years of crime, deceit, and brutality. The United States government had wasted no time in securing his extradition. The evidence against him was overwhelming: the murder of Jake Morgan and Jung Yen, the torture and grievous bodily harm inflicted on Sebastian’s mother, Luna, Lin and his funding of a terrorist cell (Black Sentinel). There had been no grand farewell or dramatic objection from him; just a simple nod as the gavel came down, condemning him to a lifetime behind bars. His reign of terror had ended. In the weeks that followed, Thomas and Sebastian worked closely with the local authorities in Vietnam. With Alexander gone, the Black Sentinel crumbled, their remaining members either arrested or fleeing into the unknown. The contraban

Five Hours EarlierThe convoy moved steadily along the winding dirt road, a line of black Humvees and trucks kicking up clouds of dust under the gaze of the moon. Inside one of them, Sebastian sat with his hands bound, his jaw clenched. Lin and Luna sat beside him, equally restrained. Across from them, Alexander Mason sat, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Sebastian had expected many things when Alexander’s men had dragged Luna, Lin and him, bagged their heads and tossed them into the van, but the sight that greeted him when he had reoriented himself was not one of them. The moment his eyes landed on her, his breath caught in his throat.“Mum?” His voice cracked, disbelief rendering him momentarily frozen. Her eyes widened, and before anyone could react, Sebastian lunged forward, pulling her into his arms. Her thin frame trembled as she clung to him fiercely, her silent sobs shaking her body. “You’re alive.” Sebastian whispered, as he deepened the hug.Alexander chuckl

Thomas adjusted his night-vision binoculars and focused on the camp below. Locating the camp after Jasper's direction wasn't hard, coupled with the fact that they had high-tech surveillance devices. The camp was a hive of activity, armed personnels moving swiftly in all directions. From their vantage point, he and his team had a clear view of the entire setup. The black tent in the center caught his attention again. Jasper had been clear. That was where Sebastian's mother was being held. However, getting into the camp wasn't going to be easy. It was heavily guarded and its location in the centre of the camp was a tactical nightmare. Thomas arched his brow as he noticed a pattern. There was a tall, bearded man, immaculately dressed, who strolled leisurely around the camp. As he walked, soldiers paused and slightly bowed to him in respect. This led Thomas to believe that the man held some sort of high authority. He was definitely the top dog in the camp, the shot caller. Thomas zoo

Sebastian’s head hung low, blood dripping from his temple. His wrists were raw from the metal shackles that bound him to the wooden post. His body screamed with pain from the beatings, but he had endured worse. He would not break. He just hoped that Jasper had been able to escape and call for help.Lin was slumped beside him, barely conscious. Her face was swollen, her lip split open. They had fought. They had endured. With a venomous stare, he spat out a lump of blood on the boot of his torturer. The torturer was a bulky, dark man who had been tuning them up for days in search of information. He had proven to be an unyielding captor, and the fact that Sebastian and Lin refused to talk infuriated him. A knock vibrated the door. The torturer's attention snapped to the door. He had instructed his minions not to interrupt him whenever he was at work. With an irritated voice, he snapped.“Who's there?” He bellowed. No response.Sebastian and Lin exchanged weak glances. Jasper’s breath came in ragged gasps as he sprinted through the dense undergrowth. Twigs snapped underfoot, branches tore at his arms, and the darkness seemed to press against him from all sides. After running and simultaneously scanning his environment for hours, he had done it.He had escaped the camp. But now what? Realization dawned on him. Adrenaline had driven him out of the camp, but now that the rush was fading, reality set in.Where the hell was he?The jungle was vast and like a green void. He had no compass, no map, and no idea how far he had run. He sighed as he mentally facepalmed himself. He had been so reckless. How was he going to locate the shore where the boat had been hidden? He forced himself to keep moving. There was no turning back. As the hours stretched into days, Jasper’s pace slowed. His legs burned, his lips cracked from dehydration, and his stomach twisted painfully from hunger. No food. No water. Jasper had begun to believe his father had abandoned him again. Days had passed without any word from him. It was therefore surprising when his father strode into his tent on a cold evening. His father stood at the entrance of the tent, a smug look on his face. Jasper hated how unaffected Alexander looked. He clenched his fists. “Where are my friends?” “They’re fine.” His father replied him, his voice devoid of emotion.Jasper studied him. He didn't believe anything he said.“I want to see them.” His father exhaled through his nose. “That won’t be happening.” Before Jasper could retort, Alexander held up a hand to cut him short. “I didn't come here to banter words with you. I came here to give you a choice.” Jasper’s jaw tightened. “What choice?” “You leave this island. Tomorrow morning, a helicopter will arrive. You’ll board it, and you’ll forget you ever saw me.” Jasper stared at him in disbelief and confusion.“Excuse me?” He inquired.“You heard me.” Jasper let out

Two days passed by in quick succession. Ever since Alexander stormed out of the tent, he hadn't returned. Two days confined in a space with a mute woman who was like a lifeless husk—unwilling to socialize. The morning of the third day, Alexander decided to bless Jasper with his presence. Jasper sat on the edge of his chair, his father’s piercing gaze locking onto him like a predator studying its prey. Without any form of pleasantries, Alexander decided to swoop in for the kill. “Let’s try this again.” He said, his voice calm but firm. “My apologies. I wasn't entirely honest with you. Jasper groaned as he stirred, pain radiating from his injured leg. His mind was foggy, the lingering effects of morphine dulling his senses. As his mind cleared, the first thing he registered was the smell of roasted coffee beans. Last time he checked, they weren't on a vacation island which provides luxuries like hot frothy coffee. With a huff, he sat up and properly assessed his surroundings. He was in a tent, that much he could deduce. The tent was well furnished, two plush couches arranged perpendicular to each other, a large shiny oak table in the centre, maps and documents spread across it, expensive-looking artworks propped up against the foot of the tent and another king-sized bed situated in the opposite corner of the tent. Glancing at his foot, he noticed that it had been neatly wrapped up with clean bandages. He sighed. His nostrils traced the source of the coffee smell. It came from a coffee pot which was placed on a tray with cups on a table in the corner of the tent. T

From the shadows, figures emerged. At least five of them, dressed in a mixture of camouflage and dark clothing, their faces partially covered with cloth. Each one wielded a weapon—rifles, machetes, even crossbows. The leader, a tall man with a bald head, stepped closer. Unlike the other men, he didn't cover his face with a cloth. From the slant of his eyes, he seemed to be of oriental origin. However, his English was surprisingly clear and well-pronounced. “Who are you? And what are you doing on this island?” His voice boomed and reverberated around the forest floor. Sebastian's mind whirled as he tried to figure out the best way out of their current predicament. Looking at the men, it was evident that they weren't government military personnels; instead, they looked like the pirates that Lin had warned them about. Sebastian exchanged a tense glance with Luna. He knew one thing for certain. They were in serious trouble.“We are researchers, on a research mission to uncover the w
