Ethan and Chloe rushed outside, both now completely sober after the news they had just heard. His assistant brought the car around to the front of the bar. Ethan yanked the door open with urgency and slid inside. Chloe climbed in beside him, trembling as she sat.

The ride to the hospital was a blur.

Ethan barely registered anything going on around him, all his thoughts were on Lily. He should have gone home with her. If he had she wouldn’t have gotten hurt. He never should have argued with her in the first place. Lily’s face appeared in his mind, the glance she threw at him before she turned and walked away. It was all his fault.

The streets were mostly empty with very few cars in sight at this time of the night, yet at each red light, it felt like he was further and further away from Lily.

She was injured and he wasn’t by her side.

“How much longer before we get to the hospital?” He barked.

"We’re almost there, sir," his assistant replied, gripping the wheel tightly. “Just two more turns.”

Beside him, Chloe was frantic, she gripped her phone in her hand, redialing a number, mumbling, “Pick up, come on, pick up.” when there was no answer after multiple tries with no answer, she turned to Ethan. “Can you reach Aspen? I need to tell him about Lily’s accident.”

“He’s on a business trip” Ethan answered, his voice hollow.

From another car behind them, Stacy sat in the passenger seat as her manager drove, watching Ethan’s car speed ahead. She clenched her fists, a flicker of annoyance flashing in her eyes.

Why must Lily always take all of Ethan’s attention?

Every time, Lily this and Lily that.

Everything was all for Lily.

It would be better if she just died.

Ethan would be hers.

No more distractions. No more competition.

She smoothed her expression before glancing at her manager. “Drive faster.”

By the time they arrived at the hospital, Ethan barely waited for the car to stop at the entrance  before getting out of the door and rushing in, with Chloe following closely behind.

“Nurse. Nurse.” Ethan ran up to the nurses station. “My wife was brought in from a car accident. She is wearing a red dress. Where is she?”  his voice was sharp, but shacky, giving away the fear he was feeling.

One of the young nurses at the desk looked up. “She and the man she was brought in with are currently in surgery.”

Ethan’s breath caught. Surgery.

His legs almost gave away when he heard those words.

Chloe’s hand flew to her mouth and she started to cry.

“Is she okay?” Chloe asked in between sobs.

“I don’t have the full details,” the nurse said, glancing at her computer. “But when she was brought in there was a metal rod stuck in her right leg. She was immediately taken into surgery.”

A metal rod? His mind conjured horrifying images–his poor Lily must be in so much pain. Ethan staggered back slightly, gripping the edge of the reception counter.

He inhaled sharply, trying to steady himself. She has to be okay.

“Could you take us to her?” He asked softly.

The nurse stood up and led them to the elevator and stopped in front of an operating room. The red “IN SURGERY” light above the glass doors glowed ominously.

“The surgery is still going on, don’t worry the doctors will do their best to save her life,” the nurse reassured them before walking away.

Chloe and Ethan sat outside the door watching the red lights showing the surgery was still going on.

“How long will the surgery go on?” Stacy’s voice cut through the silence as she walked up to them worry written over her face. “I’m sure Lily will be fine, she is a strong woman.” She stood beside Ethan and put a hand on is shoulder.

“What are you doing here?” Chloe asked angrily. “Haven’t you done enough damage?”

“I was worried about Lily so I had my manager drive me here.” She replied innocently.

“Liar” Chloe snorted, folding her arms.

“We did grow up together, Chloe. You don’t have to be so unwelcoming” She added smugly, walking away.

Chloe shot her a glare but didn’t say anything, she turned her attention back to face the door.

They sat in silence as time passed, until finally, the door slid open.

Ethan and Chloe stood up and stepped forward immediately as the doctor emerged. Behind him Lily was wheeled out by nurses, still unconscious, her leg was wrapped in a cast and there were some bandages on her arms.

“Doctor how is she?” They stood in front of the doctor. It was already 4AM, surgery had been going on for more than three hours.

The doctor took off his mask and smiled comfortingly. “She lost a lot of blood but doesn’t have a fatal injury. Other than scratches, she had some glass shards stuck in her legs along with a metal rod but they have been removed now.”

Ethan’s hands trembled as he watched the nurses.

“She’s stable,” The doctor assured them. “She should wake up when the anesthesia wears up.”

Stable.

Ethan let out a deep breath in relief.

They followed behind Lily’s as she was wheeled into her room.

Ethan stood at the doorway staring at her fragile figure on the bed, as the nurses set up, her IV drip. She looked so weak. Just a few hours ago she was glowing and dancing, perfectly fine. And now?

She was injured and unconscious, her legs were elevated, the right one wrapped in a cast.

Ethan slowly approached the bed and sat down on the chair beside her bed.

His fingers hovered over hers before he finally took her hand in his.

Chloe stood beside him, crying softly.

“Ethan” Stacy called softly, she was holding a bag in her hands standing by the door. “I brought you some food. You haven’t had dinner.”

He didn’t turn to look at her, his eyes stayed on Lily.

“Thank you, but i’m not hungry,” he muttered.

Stacy sighed, stepping closer. “You need to eat. You won’t be able to take care of her if you faint from hunger.”

Before Ethan could respond, Chloe cut in. Her expression was dark.

"We need to talk," she snapped at Ethan. “Come out,” her eyes blazed with fury as she turned and walked out of the room

Ethan hesitated for a moment, not wanting to let go of Lily’s hands, before finally standing up to go outside.

He closed the door behind him and turned to face Chloe.

Her hand whipped across his face.

Slap.

“Fuck you, Ethan.”
