Hey—” Lily started, startled.
Ethan's grip tightened around Lily’s wrist as he pulled her through the teeming crowd off the dance floor, his jaw was set in a hard line.
“Ehan let go,” She shouted, twisting in his grip trying to free herself. “You’re hurting me.”
He immediately relaxed his grip but didn’t let go. He continued to lead her through the hallway, but gentler this time.
They stopped at a balcony at the end of the hallway. It was quieter here, the bass of the music could still be heard, but was reduced to a distant thrum. They were the only ones there.
Ethan released her abruptly, and turned to face her, his blue eyes blazing with anger as he clenched his fists by his sides.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” he demanded, his voice low but harsh.”Why are you here?”
Lily stood, rubbing her sore, reddened wrist. “I was dancing Ethan. What the hell are you doing?”
His gaze swept over her, taking in the way her dress hug her curves, the tigh peeking out through the slit. “Lily, did you forget you are married? You are my wife. You shouldn’t be out in a club dancing with strange men”
She laughed, the bitter sound echoed off the wall. How dare he. “What strange men? Don’t you think you’re being hypocritical? Now you finally remember we are married.”
“Of course,” Ethan replied exasperated, “Today is our wedding anniversary.” He ran his fingers through his hair.
“You are never home.” She crossed her arms, her eyes burning with hurt. “Every year, every event, every time I see in the news, you are parading Stacy at every event. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were married to her. Not me”
His eyes narrowed. “Stacy is just an old friend, I know you’ve never liked her but at least you have known her since high school. She has also been very helpful to the growth of my company.”
“Just an old friend.” She repeated, shaking her head. “Just an old friend, but you’re always walking arm in arm. Just an old friend, but you always take her with you on business trips. Which old friends does that? Every time the press reports on both of you and praises you for being the perfect loving couple, you have never come out to refute the claims. Do you think you’re in the position to question me? Yes, today is our wedding anniversary,” She continued softly. “But you’re out with her again.”
Ethan let a deep breath. Before he could speak, they heard voices as a couple walked down the corridor. “Let’s go home and talk. This isn’t the place to have this discussion.”
“Now you know you have a home?” Lily’s voice rose with every word. “You want to talk?” Her anger rose as she thought about his indifference over the past three years.
The couple stopped and curiously glanced at them. They apologized and left, leaving Ethan and Lily alone again on the balcony.
“Lily–”
“Ethan,” a smooth, familiar voice interrupted.
The door of the private room at the other end of the hall opened and Stacy stepped out. Her heels clicked mockingly as she walked across the hall to stand beside Ethan–each step felt like a dagger digging into Lily’s heart. She hooked her arm possessively around him.
“The partners are asking for you. Mr. Ron mentioned something about a contract”
Lily’s eyes landed on their linked arms, her heart clenching. “Since you are busy, I’ll leave first.”
Ethan reached out to grab Lily’s hand but she shifted to the side to evade his touch.
Ethan glanced at Lily, conflict evident in his eyes. “I’ll be home in two hours.”
She didn’t reply and walked away, leaving him and Stacy standing in the hallway.
Lily found Chloe at the entrance of the hallway, concern etched on her face. “Oh my God, Lily, are you okay?” She held Lily’s hand, turning her sideways to check if she was hurt. “He didn’t do anything to you, did he? I tried to follow but somehow lost sight of both of you.”
Forcing a smile, Lily shook her head. “I’m fine, Chloe, thank you. I think I’m just going to head home now.”
Chloe nodded in understanding. “Do you want me to come with you? Let me grab our bags.” Lily wanted to stop her, but she had already headed for the bar. She walked back to Lily and handed her her bag.
“Chloe…I need some time alone.”
Chloe stared at Lily for a few seconds, debating if it was okay to let her leave alone.
“Okay,” She said softly. Lily could hear the worry in her voice. I’ll stay with you until you get a taxi”
Outside, the cool night air hit her, fresh, different from the warmth of the club. Chloe flagged down a taxi and Lily slid into the backseat.
“Call me when you get home, okay?” Chloe said closing the door. Lily nodded in response.
“Where to?” the driver asked.
Lily hesitated, she didn’t want to return to the empty house she had called home for three years.
"Just... drive around for a while," she said softly. She needed to clear her head.
The driver nodded and pulled away from the curb, speeding into the night. Lily looked out the window, staring at the city lights that became increasingly blurred as tears filled her eyes. She finally stopped holding back her emotions and let out a choking sob. Her shoulders shook violently as she cried.
As they approached an intersection, the screech of tires pierced the air. Lily looked up but only saw the glaring headlights of an oncoming car before the world went black. The impact was sudden and violent, it sent Lily’s car spinning. Before it finally stopped when it hit a sign by the side of the road.
A crowd gathered around the scene of the collision, someone called an ambulance.

Ethan stood up to leave after saying goodbye to his business partners. His mind replayed his earlier conversation with Lily. He needed to fix this–fix them.
“Ethan, could you give me a ride home?” Stacy asked, following him out.
“I can’t tonight. I need to get home to Lily. I made her angry.” He turned back to face Stacy. “Do you know how I can make it up to her? Maybe I should buy something.”
“Well well well,” a voice cut in dripping with mockery. “If it isn’t the scummiest couple in the world”
Chloe stormed to Ethan and Stacy, her face red with anger and slapped him in the face. The slap echoed across the hallway.
“Chloe, why did you hit Ethan?” Stacy asked, stepping closer to Ethan.
Ethan didn’t react, knowing Chloe did it because of Lily.
Chloe refused to acknowledge Stracy, only glaring at her in disgust.“You’re a terrible husband, cheating on your wife on your wedding anniversary, no wonder she left with tears.”
Cheating. Lily cried.
Ethan’s mind was reeling in confusion. Was Lily misunderstanding something? “I–”
Chloe’s phone rang, cutting him off. The color drained from her face as she heard the words on the other end of the line. The phone slipped from her hand, clattering to the floor.
“Is something wrong?” Ethan asked.
“Lily.”
“What happened to Lily?” Ethan asked, a sinking feeling rising in his chest.
“She’s been in an accident. She’s at the hospital–in surgery.”
Ethan felt the world crashing around him. His Lily.
Ethan and Chloe rushed outside, both now completely sober after the news they had just heard. His assistant brought the car around to the front of the bar. Ethan yanked the door open with urgency and slid inside. Chloe climbed in beside him, trembling as she sat.The ride to the hospital was a blur.Ethan barely registered anything going on around him, all his thoughts were on Lily. He should have gone home with her. If he had she wouldn’t have gotten hurt. He never should have argued with her in the first place. Lily’s face appeared in his mind, the glance she threw at him before she turned and walked away. It was all his fault. The streets were mostly empty with very few cars in sight at this time of the night, yet at each red light, it felt like he was further and further away from Lily. She was injured and he wasn’t by her side.“How much longer before we get to the hospital?” He barked."We’re almost there, sir," his assistant replied, gripping the wheel tightly. “Just two more
The sting of Chloe’s slap lingered on Ethan’s cheek, but he didn’t flinch. It was nothing compared to the pain he felt inside.“You bastard,” Chloe spat, her eyes blazing with fury. “Haven’t you harmed her enough? Lily is already lying unconscious on the bed” She pointed to the room. “There’s no need to bring your mistress over to show off. You do realize she is your lawfully wedded wife, not Stacy.”“Chloe, I think you are misunderstanding something, me and Stacy are just friends–nothing more”“You don’t need to lie” Chloe continued, her voice shaking with anger”. “Nothing more, but all the news articles are about how you and Stacy Peters are a match made in heaven. Who remembers you have a wife? Every other week you go on business trips with Stacy, lodging in different hotel rooms. But you’re nothing more than friends.”Ethan‘s jaw clenched. “I never—”“Do you think I’m a fool? I have seen all the headlines and so has Lily!” Chloe shouted interrupting Ethan, her hands curled into fi
The afternoon sun bathed the Blackwell mansion in a golden gentle glow, and the gentle scent of spring after the rain filled the air.Lily Monroe skipped across the yard her ponytail bouncing as she clutched a big purple bow in her hands. She walked past the entrance to the side of the house and climbed up the ladder that led up to a balcony. With practiced ease, she swung her legs over the railing and landed inside the bedroom.“Ethan! Ethan!” She called out as she tumbled inside, “I brought you a gift.”A boy’s voice mumbled something from under the blanket. Lily’s lips curled into a mischievous grin as she clumsily stood up and jumped on the bed.“Wake up sleepy head, it’s 2 in the afternoon.” She yanked the blanket off him.Ethan Blackwell, barely fourteen years old groggily opened his eyes. His messy black hair stuck up in odd directions, his blue eyes still hazy with sleep.Lily turned to sit beside him, grinning as she shoved the bow in his face. “For you.”Ethan sighed and tu
Lily twirled a pencil between her fingers as they sat on the floor of Ethan’s room, their notebooks and textbooks were spread out in front of them. They were supposed to be doing their assignments, but Ethan was the only one that was actually doing any work.“I’m bored,” Lily groaned dramatically, resting her chin on her palm. “Let’s play a game.”Ethan didn’t look up. “You have six assignments due tomorrow and a test.”Lily pouted. “I can’t work or study on an empty stomach. I want food. Pleeeease?”“You just had a pack of cookies.” He turned to face Lily who was tugging at the hem of his shirt. “Finish at least one assignment”“That was ages ago,” Lily clutched her stomach. “Pleeeeaaaseeee.”“It was ten minutes ago,” he said, still scribbling in his notebook.“Pretty please,” she whined, giving him the puppy dog look. “I want food.”Ethan sighed, finally closing his book. “Fine. Let’s go and get you something.”Lily grinned triumphantly–but instead of getting up, she shook her head
Ethan sat at his desk, staring at a bird flying in circles around a tree outside. The teacher’s voice droned on in the background, but he couldn’t focus. His fingers tightened around his pen, his textbook open to the topic of the day.He had barely slept last night.Over the weekend he had gone to the hospital. He didn’t know how to tell her or if he even should.A nudge against his arm made him snap out of his thoughts.Lily leaned in close, whispering, “You’re zoning out again.”Ethan blinked, turning to face her. “Huh.”Lily frowned, her eyes scanning his face. Lily sprinted down the stairs, her school bag half open and her tie half knotted. She nearly tripped over her dog as Ivy ran to greet her, wagging her tail excitedly as she jumped.“Not now, Ivy, I’m late for school. Lunch had never felt this long.Ethan sat, silently chewing his food as Lily and Miles continued talking opposite him. No extra person. No interruptions. He leaned back against the bedpost, watching as Lily chewed her lips, deep in thought as her eyes drifted between her rack and the board, planning her next move. The math teacher walked in after Ethan left, and class started, but Lily couldn’t focus.“Does anyone know how to solve the equation?” ” Ms. Peller asked, scanning the room.A minute passed. I wanted to ask if I may I go to the bathroom?”The maths teacher let out a sigh as she waved a dismissive hand. “Be quick. Would anyone like to try?”Lily closed her notebook and slipped out of the class. But instead of heading to the restroom, she turned in the direction of the principal’s office, her pace increasing with each step. The hallway was quiet as she passed by. Classes were in full progress, leaving the hallways empty.Just as she turned the corner—Slap. The sharp sound echoed through the hallway.“...Do you feel better now?”Lily’s breath caught. It was Ethan’s voice.Lily’s heart pounded with wor
The morning was crisp as Ethan, Lily, Chloe, and Miles walked through the school gates together. They made their way through the morning crowd, rushing to class before the bell rang.Lily and Chloe were deep in conversation about a newly released edition of their favorite magazine, their voices animated as they flipped through the pages.“I still think the spring collection was better,” Chloe said, pointing at a page. “Red and green isn’t a summer color. It’s like going out as a Christmas tree. ”“Come on. It’s not that bad. If you pair it with yellow boots instead of brown, it would be better. ”Miles, walking beside them, glanced over at the magazine with mild interest. “Hmm, she really does look like a Christmas tree,” he mused.“You both don’t know style.” Lily pouted. “See,” Chloe smirked. “He gets it, truly the soul of an artist.”Ethan walked slightly behind them with his hands in his pockets, mostly listening, though he threw in an occasional remark whenever they asked his op
