distance from him

Chapter eight(distance from him)

Sapphire's Point Of View:

Her lips parted as her hand flew to her mouth. The tears finally dropped silently.

“L-land- my ri-ng?" She stuttered, shaking in betrayal.

“Now get out of my office!" Landon shouted, banging his hand on the desk.

I saw the pain in Sonia's eyes and immediately felt sorry for her, even though I didn't really know what heartbreak felt like because Tyler was the only man I loved dearly enough to break my heart but he never dared to break my heart.

“But… Landon, I love you and you- love me too. What went wrong?....is. Is it because of her? I- I swear I…is this a prank?” She asked, years flowing out of her eyes uncontrollably.

“I said. Get. Out. Of. My. Office. Now!!” He yelled, gritting his teeth.

She flinched, weeping before scrambling her way out of the office reluctantly.

I looked down at my lap, not saying anything.

“You okay?" He asked.

Excuse me! How do you expect me to be okay after you just humiliated a human like that. A woman who obviously loved you, you literally used her! And you expect me to be okay!

I'm sorry, but red flag!

I forced a smile, nodding profusely, “Yeah. I am".

He sat back down, switching back into his sweet demeanor. He made me begin to wonder who exactly he was. Was he the sweet man he just showed me a few minutes ago or the toxic one he just displayed when Sonia walked in.

What was he like? Did he use women and dump them? Did he love women? Or am I just special? Or did he not even care one tiny bit?

I cleared my throat before speaking, “So about the dress….”, “I don't think I like that design anymore actually. I want something different, something slender that will kiss my curves perfectly and not a cascading dress.”.

“Why? Is it because of Sonia?".

I shook my head.

“Actually, I…. the dress doesn't soothe my body type. It only soothes the hour Glass kind of body type and not the slenders”.

"Oh, I see.”

I nodded.

After a gloomy day at work, it was time to go home. We spent more time at work than usual today and it was quite exhausting.

It was 7:58pm and I was packing my bag. I knew I needed to go to the grocery store as there was nothing I would use to make breakfast.

Mum was already worried sick and she's sent me long texts which I only opened but didn't reply to, I ignored all her million calls. It became so unbearable that I switched off my phone and tossed it into my purse.

“Let me give you a lift home." Landon suggested, giving me some papers to put in my purse. I took them from him, folding them properly.

I shook my head in denail, “No, but thanks. I have somewhere to go before going home. You can go home and have some rest, you need rest.”.

I knew I needed to distance myself from him. I tried faking that I was cool with him at least for today but I just couldn't. I needed some distance.

Even though I wanted more of him, I didn't want to end up like Sonia. This was only a contract marriage right? And I wouldn't want to end up pregnant for him after a six month contract marriage.

Also, it was evident he didn't like me, he was only using me to satisfy his selfish desires and I wasn't some slut who would let someone use me because I was blinded by infatuation.

He held my arm suddenly, sending shivers down my spine. I let out a shallow breath, throwing my neck back.

Focus, Sapphire, Focus!

I jerked my arm away.

“Why have you been acting so grumpy since Sonia showed up.".

I shook my head, “What do you mean, sir. You are my boss and THIS shouldn't be going on right? The contract isn't even on yet and it's just gonna be a contract.” I said, not sparing him a glance.

He nodded without saying another word. I grabbed my purse. “Have a good night rest, sir.".

I left the office.

I got out of the elevator and headed out of the building. The building was already empty, every operation would be held in another headquarters that only operated during midnight.

I hailed for a taxi and entered. The driver drove on the quiet road and it was about five minutes before I arrived home.

I spotted a closed shop before I remembered that I was supposed to go to the grocery store which was a bit near but opposite the direction of my house.

“Can I alight here please?”I asked the driver.

"Yes, sure. That'll be fourteen dollars.".

I brought out some money from my purse and gave him before alighting the car and walking away.

The night was silent and chilly that I began to rub my arms from the chill. Only a few people were on the street and I began to feel nervous.

I turned on my phone to reply to Mum's messages.

'I'll be home soon. I went to get some groceries.’.

She immediately replied as if she's been waiting for me to type for ages, 'What! You almost killed me. Get the groceries and get home now!’.

I didn't reply to her message. I went to reply Tyler's messages when i received a called from an unknown number.

I picked it.

“Hello." I whispered, rubbing my arms as I walked towards the grocery store that I could finally spot far away.

“Come to the warehouse now." I heard a masculine voice.

My brows furrowed. "Warehouse? Who are you, please?".

“Take a sharp turn by your left immediately.” The masculine voice commanded before the call ended.

I looked to my left, looking into a quieter and darker road with absolutely no lights.
