Anna’s POV
Anna smoothed her dress down her thighs nervously. The three men on the table Leila had pointed her attention to didn’t look like men she’d voluntarily want to shackle herself with. The one at the centre looked more in her age group, but there was a madness in his eyes that made her flinch every time she met his dull blue eyes. She really hoped he wasn’t the choice.
To his right was a man that reeked of authority, even sitting down. His green eyes surveyed the room as intensely as if he could see past the walls and blocks. He had to be the Capo, which meant the last man with them looked like her best approach. But, this was the man who had implied that she’d gotten the wrong end of the stick while trying to have sex with a partner.
She already knew he was going to be their choice, one because her luck was the wirst on the planet, and because since she’d been introduced, the man’s eyes had not left hers for a second and he had a smirk on his face.
She hid her face again and they waited for the Capo who was taking his sweet time getting up. When he did, he also raised a glass of wine and with the most mocking tone she’d ever heard from someone, he announced in a loud voice, “From the Outfit, and for the pursuit of peace between the Outfit and Moreni house, we present Kane Russell.” Sure enough, it was the stranger who had gotten her brother off her thaty stood up, and gave a polite bow.
He raised up his glass, “To the Outfit and Moreni family.”
At her side, her people echoed the chant with, “To the Moreni family and the Outfit.”
And then the introductions were over, and the celerations began in ernest.
“Where were you?” her Mom whispered in a harsh voice as she lovingly brushed her hair off her nape.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered back. “Something came up before I could leave.”
Her hands tightened around her neck, her full hair covering the motion from view, “If you embarrass this family…”
“Stop it, mother.” Leila whispered at her other side. “It was beyond our control.”
She looked relieved at that, but squeezed her neck once more in clear warning before letting go.
She looked up instinctively, and her gaze collided with a pair of sharp, grey ones. Kane, that was what they called him.
His lips twitched for a second, and she quickly hid her face again before she could find out if the motion had been a smile or a frown.
Leila turned to her, “Cheer up. He doesn’t look half bad.”
She gave a small huff of laughter at that. In the minutes they’d scrambled together after she’d taken her bath again, Leila had made her laugh by mentioning the various defects in men she could have to marry, reminding her that she would be fortunate to get someone who didn’t look like a monkey.
From under her lashes, she looked at Kane again. His gaze was no longer on her and she could observe him. He was in a fitted suit that looked expensive, but he’d removed the tie and buttoned down the first two buttons, showing a peek of what looked like ink on his chest.
She deduced that he was roughly 6’1’’ to her 5’7’’ height and he looked like he weighed a ton. His face was the attracting feature to her. His eyes when not on her were a piercing grey that took the sheen of a mirror and he was clean shaven. His hair was cut short enough that it wouldn’t be much of a problem in a close combat, but he could still sweep it around his head. His eyes caught hers and she flinched, and dropped her gaze.
Matteo motioned her forward, and she leaned closer so she was facing him. He nodded at their table, “Do you know him? Have you met before?”
“No.” she lied.
He frowned at her, “Then get your shit together and stop flinching. The Moreni family isn’t one of cowards.”
She nodded in shame, and his gaze lightened for a moment.
“They’ll soon call for a dance, and you’d be expected to dance with your bethrothed. After the dance, there’ll be a presentation of the rings and then both of you will be together at your own personal table. I trust you can do that.”
She noded again. What could she say, no? Near her brother, Vera just watched blankly, not even trying to hide her boredom as she sampled all the drinks on the table.”
“Where’s Luca?” his brother asked all of a sudden, and Leila met her eyes with a quick shake of her head.
“He’s probably hanging around with some of his friends.” Leila answered, glancing around the room.
Almost immediately, the instrumentalists changed the rhythm of their music to slow songs, and her father stood up again, holding out his hand to her. Her heart beating in her chest, she took it and let him lead her to the men.
Kane also stood up, and her father placed her hand into his. He immediately gripped it firmly and she tried not to shudder.
“Let’s dance,” her fiancee whispered in a low puff of breath and she followed him out to the front. The song was one she knew, but her knees still shook throughout as his hand on her waist moved her in tune with the music.
“Anna Moreni,” he breathed in her ear, and this time she did shudder. He gave a low laugh. “Are you scared of me?”
She shook her head and he laughed again.
The number changed to another one and more people came to dance. This one was somewhat faster, and it took all of her concentration to make sure she didn’t make a mistake. She might have stepped on his shoes once or twice though.
The song changed again, and once again she was in his arms with no distance between them.
“Is the Moreni family messing with us?” the man asked against her ear again, but this time the edge in his voice was clear.
She swallowed, “What… what do you mean?”
“Giving us a used good as new. Are you trying to fuck with us?”
She licked her lips and his eyes followed the motion. “It’s a misunderstanding.”
“It is, isn’t it?” he asked, as he twirled her into the arms of the Capo.
Fuck, she hadn’t even noticed anyone had gotten that close.
Anna’s POVAnna looked into the green eyes of the man who held her and instantly looked away. Those eyes looked familiar, and they twitched something loose in her memory but it was too vague.“So this is our bride?” the man asked, and her mind immediately descended into the gutter. What did he mean by our?Correctly interpreting the look on her face, he laughed out loud and her cheeks reddened at the attention the noise brought. “Oh, no,” the man said with a huge smile. “You belong to my family, you’re safe.”She nodded, and they continued their dance. For such a big man, he could move flawlessly, maneuvering her from position to position as if she weighed next to nothing.“What did my cousin tell you?” the man asked when the song got slower and they could talk quietly.“Your cousin?” He nodded at the man whose attention was, thankfully, elsewhere. It was weird to note, but Kane frightened her more than the Capo, probably because he hadn’t caught her in a compromising situation and
Camila's POV"Go to your room, Camila," her mother screamed, but Camila's feet remained rooted to the floor. It wasn’t the first time her papa had hit her mama, but this time looked different to her 4-year-old eyes. Maybe it was because her mother's skirts were soaked in blood.Camila approached slowly, her mom’s eyes begging her to go back, and stood a few feet from them."Papa," she whispered, and suddenly he stopped. He looked at her, something moving in his jaw. She raised her hand to him in the universal 'carry me' gesture. He glanced at the woman curled up at his feet before shifting his gaze back to her.He bent down to her level. "Go to your room, princess. I’ll come tuck you in."Camila bit her lip, tears springing into her eyes. "Please, papa," she whispered, grabbing hold of his trousers. He sighed and picked her up, but not before kicking her mama hard one more time in the stomach. Her mama cried out and curled around herself with a whimper. They headed upstairs to her roo
Anna’s POV“Anna,” her mother snapped, “are you listening to what we’re saying at all?”Anna jerked back to attention and shifted when she found five scowling faces, all directed at her.“I’m sorry,” she murmured, and most of them released an irritated sigh.“At least tell us what you heard so far,” her younger brother snapped, and she flinched. She'd tried; she really had, but after the night she’d had, her attention this morning had been terrible.“Fuck,” someone snarled, and she bowed her head in shame.“I’m sorry,” she murmured again.“Whatever,” her dad said. As the capo of the Moreni house, he was all shades of insane. He flitted between moods like he was on drugs and made decisions on a whim, most of which only favored the children he’d fathered.“Pay attention, Anna. This is especially for you,” he said softly, and she shuddered. A soft voice was a dangerous one. She nodded.“As we all know, the Outfit has been a major pain in our asses for years now. We have come to a truce a
Kane’s POV Kane poured himself a glass of whiskey, scowling when it was immediately snatched by Victor. The Capo drank it in a gulp and Kane limited his complaints to a scowl.“My office, now,” he ordered, crushing the plastic cup and tossing it to the side. Out of sight, Kane rolled his eyes but dutifully covered the bottle and followed his Capo into his office. In the office, there were already three men seated at the table. Logan, the Capo’s enforcer, and Govern and Howie, two of the older underbosses. They all scowled when they saw him. He ignored them in favor of finding somewhere to sit that was as far away from Victor as possible. Less than two months ago, he’d have taken his seat as the Capo’s right hand but he’d lost that privilege, along with his dignity and pride. Now, he did everything he was commanded to do.“Why is he here,” Govern grunted.Victor just smiled, “I didn’t realize I needed your permission to invite someone to my fucking office, Govern.”“But… I didn’t…”
Kane’s POV“Wait. What?” he asked. Of all the scenarios he’d gone through, he’d never imagined that. “Why me?”Victor leaned closer until his hot breath was against my face. “Because you owe me.”“Isn’t it in the agreement for you to send someone from your family while they send someone from theirs to raise the stake?” he asked desperately. Earlier, he’d done his best not to react when he’d heard about a marriage but this was a little too far. He could still remember the efforts and hoops he’d had to jump through before Victor had been ready to hear about any plans for peace. Marriage had never been a part of his original proposal; they were just seeking ways to mess him up more. He could hardly believe they’d been friends once—one higher in position than the other, but still friends. Victor shrugged. “I doubt if they’d notice anything. We can make up a story where you’re a distant relative, though. That’d work, right?”“Victor,” he snarled. “I have no idea what your plan is, but doi
Anna’s POVAnna glared at her reflection in the mirror as she contemplated packing her hair or leaving it down. It was her engagement ceremony to one of the Capo’s family, and they’d be coming here for the party, spending the night and then she’d be going back with them after the wedding the following day.“Leave it down,” Leila said from the door as she walked into the room.Leila was the first daughter and apart from her confusing relationship with Luca, the only member of the family who had a somewhat working relationship with her. She let her hair fall back on her shoulders and looked in the mirror again. Leila looked around the conspicuously empty room.“I assumed there’d be arrangements for help. Make-up at the very least.”“I told Mom I could do it myself.”Leila opened her mouth. “And she approved?”She just shrugged and rested her hip against the dressing table. Her own version was far from what had actually happened. The past two weeks had been full of wedding preparations,
Kane took a sip of the wine on his table and surveyed the room, resisting the urge to check his watch again. The party was to start by 11:00 am, and even though they’d flown the distance, they were still earlier than their host. Around the room, no other person looked concerned and he buried a sigh.Lateness was either a normal thing in this part of the world, or the Moreni house planned to take them by surprise. If that was it, they’d be pleasantly surprised. The major reason why the Outfit had never been attacked in the past even with the young age of her leaders was because it was difficult to take them by surprise. In fact, the first time someone had seemed to get one on them was when some secret information about some of their business had been stolen and given to the Russian rival house. And that, added with other things he’d remembered in the time he’d spent recovering, told him that it had been an inside job. Someone close to them had hired the girl and sent her to him. Becau
