At that moment, she changed her tone again and spoke in a patronizing, yet concerned manner.

"Monica, you're still young. You don't understand how treacherous people can be. Listen to me. Divorce him and marry Wilbur. He's the right man for you. Wilbur doesn't even mind that you've been married before. He's been waiting for you all this time!"

She wiped away her tears as she said so.

Her crazed actions had already terrified some of the guests, but they soon joined in again.

"Ms. Laurent, don't be so blinded by money! What's wealth compared to true love?"

"Exactly! Do you really want to watch your mother have a heart attack because of you? You'll regret it when it's too late."

"Hurry up and get a divorce! Fighting with your mother over a cheating man is just ungrateful!"

Mom shot me a triumphant look. She loved this—using others to nail me to the moral high ground as if my humiliation was the best reward she could ever receive.
