"Serena..."
"Serena," her father Blackwood's voice, was calm and urgent, outside the cabin door. He tapped his right hand, lightly on the polished wood. "Serena, Come on, dear. It's time. Everyone is waiting for you."
No response.
He tried again, a little hard this time; the sound echoed too loudly in the empty hallway. "Serena? Are you alright?
"It's Dad; please open the door."Still Silent...
He gripped the doorknob tighter to unlock it, but it remained locked, and panic clawed at his throat. He glanced around the silent hallway. Where had she gone? Or did something happen inside? he doubted. He folded his sleeve edge and pulled out his phone from his lower pants. He searched for Damien's number.
He hesitated to make a call, then finally pressed the call button, holding the phone to his ear, the dial ring cut through the air, his eyes were restless constantly scanning the surroundings, frown lines etched around his eyes. "Son," he said, his voice crackling with static. "Serena's room door is locked, and she's not answering."
Damien (Black Wood's son) pressed a hand tighter against his ear. "Dad... Dad... I couldn't hear you!" The sound of waves was sustained, Static snapped in his earpiece, a harsh sound against his eardrum.
Blackwood paced in front of the door; his eyes remained on the signal bar on his phone "Son, Is that I am audible? Can you hear me now?"
"Dad..." Damien snapped, cutting off the call. "Shit, signal dead." He raced towards the entrance of the deck.
Emiko watched her husband, his back to her, as he spoke intently into his phone. Who was he talking to? Why did he seem tensed? she wondered, she quietly followed him.
It was already getting late; they were supposed to be at the altar, Damien raced as his shoes clicked loudly on the wooden stairs. He checked each hallway before moving to the next level.
"Honey, wait...." her voice called out from upstairs, facing down Damien "What's wrong? You seem tense. Where are you going?"
Damien paused, one foot on the bottom step looking back at her.
Emiko hair bouncing, flew down the remaining stairs and into his arms.
"It's Dad," he said, his voice unclear. "The signal's awful on top of the deck while talking to him. Dad went to get Serena for the wedding, but they're still not back." Emiko nodded, then glanced at him, "I hope everything is okay" she said, and they walked together down the steps. Damien's footsteps echoed on the fifth floor, he approached his father, who stood like a statue outside the cabin door, still checking his phone. "Dad, what's wrong? Why are you outside, where is Serena?" he asked, his voice strained.Blackwood turned; his face was covered with worry. "Serena's not answering. She won't open the door."
"Have you tried calling her phone, Dad?"
"I did," Blackwood replied, his voice worried. "It's ringing inside, but she's not answering."
"Okay Dad, I check once again."
Damien knocked sharply on the door; the sound echoed in the hallway. "Serena? It's Damien. Open the door!" He pounded on the door, his anxiety rising.
Still no response.
Emiko's fingers flew to her lips, her eyes widening with sudden fear. "Dami.... What if she's collapsed inside?"
Damien looked at Emiko, sweating on his forehead, and raked his hand through his hair, growing frustrated. His mind raced as watching the floor how do we unlock the door? After a brief pause, he added, "We need a spare key." He turned to Emiko. "Quickly, get the spare key from the management office!"
She shook her head up and down fast. "Okay... ok... Where is the management office?""On the ground floor," he pressed his words. Fastly
Emiko grabbed her long pinkish gown and ran towards the stairs, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallway.
She burst through the management office door, her breath heavy. "Officer... I need a spare key for room no 505!"
The officer paused, glancing at the other officer near him, raising an eyebrow. "May I ask what purpose, ma'am?"
Her breath hitched; she tried to steady her voice, and tiny droplets of sweat flowed on her brow, her makeup smudged a little bit. "The bride... is locked inside, and she's not responding. We need to check on her immediately."
The officer understood her urgency, and he searched the rack one by one; finally, he found the 505-room key, and the officer handed her the key.
Without wasting a second, she runs back upstairs to room 505. "I've got it! I've got it!" she exclaimed, as she handed it to Damien. She gripped the wall for support.
Damien's hands trembled, he loosened his collar button, nervousness ran over his whole body, and finally, he unlocked the door. He grabbed the handle hard and pushed it open; the room was quiet and empty.
They stepped inside, their eyes darting around and the air in the room felt heavy and warm. Everything things were neat and orderly, almost too perfect.
Damien's gaze fell on the near bathroom door, slightly ajar. His heart pounded in his chest. He moved towards the door slowly.
He pushed the door open slightly. His pupils dilated, his breath catching in his throat. He saw the open window… and the rope dangling from it, the window glasses were placed on the floor. Damien lay frozen, unable to process what he had been seeing. His mind went completely blank, and his body refused to move.
Emiko had just entered the same spot and spotted a rope through the window. Her hands flew to her mouth in shock.
But her memory flashed through her mind.
Early Morning.
Time 3:45 AM. Emiko felt the weight of the hour and the icy wind whipped around the room, the waves crashed against the rocks, the silence pressing in as she stepped closer to the window where Serena was tying the last piece of her dress to the rope.
"Have to done, Serena?" Emiko whispered silently.
Serena looked up her eyes were red, and her face was tear-streaked. Her hands shook in fear, and her lower lip trembled slightly as she couldn't open her mouth, after a few seconds pause, she replied. "Yes… almost."
Emiko's eye shifted to the nearby dressing table where a letter lay, picked it up, feeling her heart tighten in her chest. She read the letter Serena had written. Her eyes narrowed; she took in the hastily scribbled note.
"Serena, don't mess up," she whispered looking at her, her voice barely audible. She took Serena's hands in hers, her grip tightening. "After tonight, you're on your own. You have to live with your… family." The word felt like ash in her mouth. Inside, Emiko felt a sharp pang of guilt towards Damien.
Serena looked back at Emiko, her eyes with vision blurred by tears and a tear-stained face. "I just want to die, but... Emiko," she whispered, her voice breaking like a cracking glass. "But... Emiko... I have no choice; everything I am doing is just... for my baby. I don't want to cheat someone for my fault... because I can't...."
Emiko stepped closer, she gently wiped Serena's tears away. "I understand, Serena. I do. But... this path you've chosen won't be easy. Just promise me you'll stay safe."
Serena shook her head slowly, "Damien will never forgive me," she murmured, her voice trembling. "He was the best brother and mother to me. I can't even think how he can.... accept this"
Emiko pulled her into a tight hug. "I have never had a sister in my life, I always think of you as a sister," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I can manage your brother, but once you leave here, keep your life hidden. Please... Don't let anyone find you. Go somewhere they won't be able to find you."
Serena nodded against her shoulder, whispering, "Um...I won't."
Emiko watched the clock at nearly 3:58 AM, and she realized there were only two minutes left before the shift change. "Okay... we have only two minutes. Just go..."Serena wiped her tears, a fleeting, bittersweet smile touching her lips. She walked to the window, glancing back at Emiko one last time.
. "Don't burn the kitchen like here. Let Ethan handle the cooking for some days. we will meet one day no matter what" Emiko teased, attempting to lighten the mood.Serena chuckled faintly and shook her head up and down, her smile a fleeting glimpse of the person she used to be. "Goodbye, Emiko."
"Go, Serena. It's time," Emiko said, her voice barely holding together as she watched her friend climb out the window and into the unknown.
O
Emiko shifted her imagination at 8:00 AM; the ship buzzed with activity as the wedding preparations reached their peak.William's mother approached Emiko in the rushed hallway, and her concern was evident. "Is the bride ready?"Emiko stood tall and managed a small smile formed on her lips, her fingers clasped tightly in her dress. "Yeah... I think she is."William's (Groom) mother looks at her up and down, a skeptical arch to her brows, "What she is... What do you mean?"Oh! Shit! I almost forgot to tell you. Serena… she wants to get ready by herself. She didn't want to bother anyone." Emiko leaned closer to her face, lowering her voice. "She said... she wanted to surprise William. Don't tell him."William's mother nodded, eyes widened, mouth opened slightly. "Really... she's so thoughtful. It makes me more eager... how she looks in a bride dress." Then, she hurried off while talking to someone on the phone.Emiko exhaled a relieved breath. "Shit, I have unlocked a new talent!" she mu
Damien's room was silent except for the air conditioner's hum. he rotated the amber liquid in his glass while his eyes remained locked on the photograph. Blackwood glared at him through the photograph with a stern expression mingled with kindness which appeared frozen in time.A relentless beast of memory from that day 24 years back tormented Damien. The expression of violent anger on James's face appeared to Damien in his nightmares. The betrayal Serena committed continues to feel like a cutting pain inside his chest. Damien felt his jaw tighten as he looked at the incriminating letter his father held in his hand.He murmured "Serena" while his words dripped with venomous undertones. The whiskey burned his throat while offering him a much-needed diversion. Time has passed but my anger remains unchanged. The humiliation still stings. Your actions resulted in me losing my father, business and everything precious to me. The burden of his history weighed heavily on him like an unending p
"Excuse me." The newcomer's deep and clear voice carried brightness across the room He stood with one hand in his pocket, the other holding a schedule. Mrs. Chen stood at her desk and smiled and waved at him. "Um, yes, dear""Ma'am, Is that the Business Economics lecture hall?"Mrs. Chen nodded, her smile warm and welcoming. "Are you new?" she asked. "Yes, Come in " He took his time strolling through the room. As the girls moved in their seats, they made a scraping sound against the floor, some girls changed positions to see better. Whispered voices filled the room with a soft rustling like dry leaves moving in a light wind. The professor directed her attention to the classroom and declared, "Everyone, please listen." He is our new student" Mrs. Chen faced Nate's side, a friendly glint in her eyes. "Why don't you tell everyone a bit about yourself?" she suggested."I'm Nathaniel. Just call me Nate," he said, with a small grin, his hand through his already disheveled dark hair. He
Suddenly, a fragment of imagination flashed in her mind. A cold, night. Streetlights cast long shadows. She saw a man in a black hoodie staring across the street near the streetlamp. She paused and looked back, glancing around nervously. No one here, please calm down Eve.... she thought, trying to calm her racing heart. But then, she saw him again, closer this time, his face still unclear by the hood. Who's he? Or is he following me, I am the one who standing in an empty street, she realized, She broke into a run, her footsteps pounding on the deserted empty street. Behind her, she heard footsteps, pounding closer now. 'Without glancing back, Please... God, I have to reach my house, give me strength. Run, run... Eve run... ' she thought, her silent scream echoing in her mind, close behind her. The empty street stretched out before her.She runs as much as she can, nearly falling, her breath coming in heavily. She finally got to her gate, her hands shaking like crazy as she tried t
Luna pointed her cheeks. "You are blushing, Eve", she teased. The bell rang, cutting off the remaining chatter. "Okay, Zoey..., Luna, see you tomorrow," Evangeline said while grabbing her bag."Okay.... Don't forget to tell us tomorrow, 'What was that something?' " Zoey said with a wink.Evangeline rolled her eyes again but couldn't help a smile. She texted Aaron: I'm leaving. If you have time, come to the hallway.Aaron replied almost immediately: Okay. She put her phone into her bag and glanced around the room. Nate was gone. She grabbed her bag from a desk and left the classroom. Zoey and Luna trailed behind her."Finally, my friend Eve got some butterflies in her stomach," Zoey teased as they reached the hallway.Luna chimed in, "About time! I was starting to think she was immune to handsome guys."Evangeline just shook her head hearing music, a smirk playing on her lips, and she glanced walking towards the hallway, students rushing towards their homes, their voices silent in musi
"We can handle it, Evangeline; you can take a rest inside the car," Chris said seriously, straightening his whole body."Rest............. Why?" Evangeline sneered, flipping her hair back. "I'm the only one who knows everything about this house. So, it's easy to catch him, right?"Chris and Michael exchanged a look of a lack of certainty."Guys..... I have a weapon!" Evangeline declared, opening her bag. "Chris, Michael, it's time. Grab your weapons," she whispered dramatically, handing them their tools. She gave Chris a pair of scissors. "You can use this if that thief attacks me, got it...? We have to prove scissors aren't just for cutting paper." Her voice was serious.Chris nodded, his eyes showing clear confusion as he scanned the harmless-looking scissors in his hand. What is this? Is this weapon going to attack the thief? I was trained for bodyguards, but she treated me like a kid, Chris thought and a disappointed smirk appeared on his lips.Micheal, laughing at the corner of
Nate exited the bar, unaware of the figure of a hooded man melting into the shadows by the elevator. They waited for the lift. The illuminated arrow remained stubbornly pointed downwards. Nate glanced at his watch, a flicker of impatience crossing his face, adjusting his coat. Then, finally, a soft beep announced the elevator's arrival. The silence stretched, making Nate uneasy. Then, a distorted, almost metallic clang echoed from the elevator shaft. The doors creaked open. They stepped inside, the silence amplifying the gentle hum of the machinery. Kim pressed the button for the parking level.Hiding in the shadows by the stairwell, the hooded figure scrolled through the photos on their phone. Each picture showed Nate in some moment, and after a quick look, they hit the "send" button, and he added, "My Job has been done". He texted while the notification popped up that the payment was credited. The photos quietly vanished into cyberspace.A phone, its screen a dim beacon in a darkened
The class fell silent, curiosity filling the air, glancing at each other.Mrs. Anabella continued, "You're going to choose your partner from your hands." She showed a glass jarThe students stared at each other in shock, the atmosphere charged with surprise and uncertainty. This wasn't a typical assignment. Evangeline leaned over to Zoey, a wry smile twisting her lips, and murmured, "Are we in university or kindergarten? It's like she thinks we're still kids." Zoey nodded, watching her professor, chewing the gum, and tapping her pen against her notebook. "I was hoping for a regular lecture today. This feels like P.E."Mrs. Anabella, ignoring the mutterings, continued, "I've written all the boys' names in this jar. Each girl has to pick one. That'll be your partner for the project." A wave of whispers washed over the classroom. Some girls giggled with excitement, already eyeing potential partners. Others expect their crush's name. Everyone excitedly awaited their turn to take the jar
The staff's voice cut through the tense silence. "The result of the 3rd round, " the staff's voice echoed in the room. "Kim 1 vote, Evangeline 2 votes, Aaron 3 votes, and Zoey 5 votes.""What the f*ck?" Zoey's voice was a strangled whisper, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Zoey identity was a doctor" "What? She is a doctor" Victoria said, her surprise evident."You guys are crazy," Zoey's voice cracked with frustration, her sharp gaze locking onto Evangeline, a flicker of anger in her eyes."Why she is mad at me?" Evangeline murmured to Victoria, a knot of worry tightening in her stomach. "Maybe she didn't expect it" Victoria replied."Maybe," Evangeline whispered, her eyes still on Zoey's retreating figure. "Next round in ten minutes ...." the staff announced.Nate moved with a confident air towards Lucas. "If you were Mafia," he began, his voice low and persuasive, "what would be your first move?""I find the investigator first. He must be our problem" Lucas whispered to his ear, hi
"I am not..." Aaron said with a casual shrug.Liam's gaze, sharp with disappointment, that seemed to physically weigh him down, raked over Aaron. "Dude, what the hell happened to you?" He shook his head as refused to accept the bitter truth "You're making a mistake, a huge one. I knew how much you love Evangeline, but looking at this room, I can't believe you did it"Aaron let out a deep breath,, the heavy unspoken words mixed in the air. "Don't rush to judgment, Lee. Trust me, I would never disappoint my friend, You will understand it later," he said as he grabbed a nearby towel, his movements stiff, and headed towards the bathroom and shut the door.Liam sighed and walked angrily out of Nate's room.Meanwhile, in the quiet room, Victoria lying on Nate's bed, her eyes tracing the patterns on the ceiling. A soft smile touched her lips. " I think I like Eve," she said, "She is perfect for my brother."Nate, a smirk instantly replacing his neutral expression at the sound of Evangeline
Before he could step towards the Nate, Zoey's hand clamped onto his. "Come on, Aaron," she said, her voice too loud, her laughter directed more at drawing attention than genuine amusement. She hugged him firmly towards the quieter, opposite end of the beach.Nearby, Nate's gaze shifted to Evangeline as she walks shy towards him. His eyes traced the curvy body, a small, persistent smile playing on his lips. "You look.... great," Nate said."Thanks, Nate," Evangeline replied, her smile widening genuinely. "You look great too." She then reached out and took Victoria's hand, their fingers instantly intertwining."You two became close in one day," Nate observed, watching the easy camaraderie between them."Yeah..." they said in unison, sharing a laugh. "Okay... Can we race?" Victoria suggested, pulling both of their hands, her energy infectious as she started jogging towards the north side. "Catch me, Eve..." Victoria called back, glancing over her shoulder with a playful grin. They stopp
"We reached the beach High-five each other!" Harry shouted while watching the view of the beach. Others cheered. The bus stopped in front of the private villa with a huge, big swimming pool on the right side and the footpath was creative. The laborers were already waiting for them, they took their luggage toward their allocated rooms.Liam jumps from the last stair of the bus as landed perfectly and spreading his hands wide like wings and inhale deeply the fresh warm air. "Let's go..." he shouted with adventure in his voice as he ran towards the villa."Wow, this villa is huge," Luna breathed, her eyes tracing the infrastructure and modern designs. "This is my best trip ever""Inside was cooler than outside," Zoey commented as she inhaled the delicate rose scent of the room spray."Now the time is 3 p.m. Your rooms are already pre-assigned. If you need anything or wish to change, ask the manager in that room. Get ready, wear something nice," Kim instructed, his gaze sweeping over eve
The 2 hours later.Laughter and excited chatter filled the luxurious bus, while the cool air from the air conditioning battled the sweltering heat outside. Passengers wore light, beach-themed dresses and shorts that swayed as they moved around. Some played cards on fold-down tables, while others gazed out the windows and others took photos and posting on social media.Chris's phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled out and the screen displayed 'Serena.' He cleared his throat before attending, the sound of chatting, and playing laughter echoed through the bus, so he moved to the driver's side for some semblance of quiet. "Yes, Ma'am," he said, his voice confident. The driver glanced at him, then back at the road."It seems, you are already on a trip, Chris," Serena asked."Yes, Ma'am. Your daughter, Eve. " He paused "Sorry Ma'am Evangeline Ma'am informed you previously, she said not to check on you because you were busy at work." he stammered. Serena laughed; her voice tone increased.
Nate let out a relieved breath after watching Evangeline leave the room. Then, Kim stumbled into the room, his eyes wide with shock. "What happened, I heard a noise here...." he asked, his gaze shifting over the shattered glass pieces everywhere.Noticing Nate's hand bleeding, Kim said, "Dude, your hands... are bleeding, come here," taking a first aid kit near the storeroom and gently cleaning Nate's bloody hand. "Why? Day by day, your madness is getting worse." He washed and put some ointment on the cut. "Control emotions Nate" Kim advised, but Nate remained silent, his gaze fixed on the blank monitor. The intercom buzzed with a sharp tone. "We have a guest," the Voice announced. I am gonna check who that was...." Kim said, carefully walking without placing his legs on the glass.Kim unlocked the door hurriedly and after watching the person in front of him, his eyes widened in shock, "Katherine...." he murmured.Katherine, cool and composed, stood in the hallway, her luggage at her f
Ha-Joon was busy making coffee for a customer, but his mind replayed their conversation from earlier today. After a long day, the bar was empty and felt heavy with the silence of unspoken words. After cleaning, removed his wet apron, and turned off the lights, plunging the room into darkness. He locked the door, the click echoing the finality of his decision. The city hummed around him as he biked to his hacker class. He put on his helmet, and a cold shield, and went inside, the computers' hum a familiar comfort. He typed code, lines of logic on the screen, a temporary escape. But the time flew Fastly, and everyone left the hall except him, he glanced at his watch, "shit, already 1 am, " he muttered. "Seo-Yeon would be hungry." He rushed to a nearby noodle shop, hoping the warm food would bridge the gap between them. After reaching his apartment, he entered the hall, "Sorry I'm late..." he began, holding the noodles parcel.Seo-Yeon sat on the sofa, her face tear-stained and angry, wai
The hacker's mind reeled to his past, the dark room went bright morning, and golden sunlight flashed across the polished floor of Seo-Yeon's hall. Evangeline, a whirlwind of vibrant energy, entered, her hands carrying the parcel. "Seo-Yeon... where are you?" she called, her voice echoing against the quiet.Evangeline unlocked the Seo-Yeon room and entered, " Look what I brought for you "she said with a bright smile.Seo-Yeon propped against a mountain of pillows, and coughed lightly, tied her messy black hair, "What did you bring for your sinui (Sister-in-law)?" she teased.Evangeline arranged the parcels on the bedside table, her eyes sparkling. "I got my favorite dishes...." she declared, her eyes sparkling.Seo-Yeon narrowed her eyes and coughed, "Huh? Your fav....""Okay.... I brought your favorite......, chicken soup and porridge for my lovely bestie " she said, glancing around the room, "where is my Oppa?
