Desiree

Chapter four

Desiree

“Des, there’s someone here to see you,” one of the hotel servers poked her head into the staff room.

“Who?” I asked in confusion. I didn’t have any family in the city and my only friend worked in the hotel too. Who would be visiting me? My mind came up blank.

The girl shrugged, "no Idea. He’s with Gia” She said then sauntered away.

I made my way to the receptionist’s desk. Gia met my eyes and winked and I understood her reason for winking a second later when a bespectacled, suited man unfolded himself from one of the waiting room chairs and approached me. The man was tall and good looking.

Not as good looking as Killian Donovan, my mind supplied.

I shut that shit down immediately. Killian was a mistake that would not be repeating itself. He was also in the past. There was no way on earth I’d ever run into him again.

It had been a week since my unusual experience with him. It felt like it had happened to someone else a million years ago. Some times I still found it hard to believe that it hadn’t all been part of a fever dream. Or an over active imagination.

“Uhm. Hello?” I said.

“Hello. I’m Alex. Can we talk privately please, I have something important to discuss with you.”

My confusion increased but I led him to one of the empty sitting rooms that constituted the hotel public lounge space.

“So, what is it? Who are you? What do you want with me?”

“I work for Killian Donovan.”

I froze, “uh y-you d-do?”

His eyebrows shot up, “from your reaction, I’m guessing that you know exactly who that is and why he may be looking for you.”

“It was all a big misunderstanding!” I blurted out, “I promise never to tell anyone and never to cause any trouble. I just didn’t want to lose my job. I’d have lost my job if the hotel discovered that I’d been using the suite bathtub.” I said all at once. Panic filling my chest.

“Killian doesn’t want to put you in trouble. He just wants to talk.” He said calmly.

“T-talk?” I stammered. What would a billionaire have to say to me? I didn’t trust that ‘talk’ and frankly, I didn’t want to talk to him.

“Just talk”

“Can I say no?”

“Of course,” he said easily.

I let out a sigh of relief.

“But it’d be in your best interests to not say no to a man who’s richer than small countries and can decide to make your life very difficult,” he added.

I glared at Alex. “Fine.” I said defeatedly.

His face brightened, “good. He’s waiting.”

“He’s here?”

“Same room as last time.”

My eyes went wide. No freaking way. If Killian Donovan thought I was going to fall into bed with him as easily as last time, he had better think again. Once had been a mistake, twice would just be extremely foolish.

I turned and walked into the elevator, stabbing the button for the nineteenth floor harder than necessary. As soon as the elevator doors shut, hiding me from Alex’s gaze, I dug out my phone and dialed Lois. She technically wasn’t supposed to have her phone on duty, but Lois was a rule breaker.

“Hey bitch.” She answered on the first ring.

“Donovan the fourth is here,” I said immediately.

“No way!” She exclaimed.

“Yes way and he wants to see me.” I paused, “he’s waiting for me at the presidential suite.”

“Are you wearing nice panties?” She asked slyly.

“That’s not funny. I’m not going to sleep with him.” I insisted.

“Did you shave at least?”

“Lois!”

“A real man wouldn’t mind things like that of course.”

“I’m going to hang up.” I threatened.

“I’m sorry, don’t hang up,” she laughed. “But we are both thinking the same thing even if you won’t admit it. Why else would he want to see you at the scene of the crime?”

Scene of the crime made it sound so sordid. I made a face at that.

The elevator doors slid open as it got to the nineteenth floor, “no idea, but it can’t be anything good.”

“You’re way too pessimistic for your own good. It can be something good.”

“We’ll see. I’ll talk to you later.” I said doubtfully

“Keep me posted. This is better than any soap opera.”

“I’m glad this is so entertaining to you. Bye” I hung up and squared my shoulders. I knocked on the door and waited for a moment before pushing down on the hand of the door and walking right in.

My gaze immediately landed on a broad shouldered frame standing at the row of floor to ceiling windows.

As I took a step forward be turned to face me. Today he was in a three piece navy suit that looked intimidating and stern.

His eyes met mine from across the room. Hard and intense.

“You wanted to see me?” I asked stupidly, at a loss at what to say. Our last meeting hadn’t involved a lot of talking, just a lot of moaning.

He was the one who crossed the room in long, languid strides till we were about three steps apart. His raw, masculine beauty hit me like a freight train. I hadn’t imagined how striking the man was. I had thought my memories had been over exaggerating him, but on the contrary.

“My name is Killian Donovan.” He gave me a look like he was waiting for me to introduce myself.

I snorted, “I’m sure you know my name, Mr. Donovan.”

His expression didn’t change, “I have a proposition for you.”

“No.” I said immediately.

“You don’t know what I’m about to say.”

“You’re about to ask for an encore of the other day.” I glared at him, “not interested. I’m sure there’s a million women out there who’d jump at this Wonderful opportunity though. If that’s all, I’m gonna leave,” I turned to walk away.

“I’m afraid you don’t have much of a choice. I own this hotel now.”

My eyes went wide, “I’ll get another job.”

“I also know what happened on December sixth, twenty twenty one.”

I went cold all over.
