As the morning sun gently crept into the room, I stirred from my slumber, blinking away the remains of sleep. Beside me, Edwina lay peacefully, her breathing steady and calm. I didn't want to disturb her, but I knew I had to slip away quietly before she awoke.

Carefully, I detached myself from her embrace, silently reaching for my clothes and dressing myself. Every movement was deliberate, every sound muffled as I tiptoed across the room. I couldn't risk waking her just yet.

In the kitchen, I scanned the scant shelves for something to prepare for breakfast. My heart sank at the lack of options, but then I spotted them—fresh cherries, sitting in a small bowl. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.

Rummaging through the cupboards, I found a few more ingredients—a couple of eggs, some flour—and set to work. Time seemed to slip away as I moved about the kitchen, the familiar rhythm of cooking soothing my nerves.
