Chapter 8: Breakfast

Sally woke up, wondering why she was sore. Had she worked that hard yesterday? Oh. Wait. Sebastian. She sat up, pulling the covers over her naked breasts. He was gone. She sighed. Part of her was happy. Part of her was disappointed.

Then she heard a noise downstairs. Crap. Someone was in her house. She snagged her robe and wrapped it around her. Then she grabbed the bat from under the bed. Creeping down the steps, she tried to figure out where the person was.

In the kitchen.

Okay. Not the best place to steal anything. Her valuables, what little she had, were not in the kitchen. She tiptoed to the door.

Sebastian. Wearing just jeans. No shirt. No shoes. Took her breath away. He was beyond sexy. He was also cooking breakfast from what she could smell. He stood looking out the back window. It was her favorite view also.

He spun around. She felt silly with the bat in her hand. His gaze went to the bat then back to her face, a wry grin on his face.

"I thought I had an intruder."

That grin lit up the whole kitchen. "Just me. You need some coffee?"

"Desperately."

He poured her a cup before handing it to her. "Here."

He kissed her cheek then she took a sip. He'd made it just how she liked. How did he know?

"I smell food," she said.

Her stomach rumbled. No one had ever made her breakfast.

"The bacon's made. I'm just waiting to see what you want in your omelet."

"So you do cook."

"I do, Sally. I like to eat, so it's easier to cook than get takeout. Cheaper, too."

She nodded, not quite ready for conversation or anything else deep. "Cheese."

"Is that what you want in your omelet?"

"Yes," she said. That was about as coherent as she could be. They hadn't slept much last night. Too busy having sex. Mind-blowing, multiple-orgasm sex. Wow.

"Anything else?" he said.

He hadn't moved. As if he didn't want to ruin the moment.

"No, just cheese."

"You have some fresh herbs out on the porch. Can I put some of them in there?"

She waved a hand. She drank more deeply of the coffee. "Yes, fine."

"Sorry. I'm probably asking too much before the coffee kicks in."

He was the cheery sort in the morning. She wasn't sure that she liked that. She needed a few minutes and a few gallons of caffeine to be cheery. "Yes."

He nodded then went back to humming. She couldn't tell the tune. She sat at her table, gazing out at the backyard like she did most mornings. Still. Even with his demeanor, she enjoyed that he was here. He hadn't left in the middle of the night.

"My brother was going to come, then he got a call for a job, so I called a tow truck. It'll be here this morning. Then I can get out of your hair. It just means that the porch may not be finished today."

She shrugged, still not ready to talk. He smiled then kissed her cheek as he put a plate in front of her. This omelet smelled better than hers. She sniffed again. Wine? Had he put wine in the eggs? She'd never thought of that. Not like she was classically trained, but she knew her way around a kitchen.

She took a taste. It melted in her mouth. Her eyes closed for a moment as he sat next to her at the table.

"Good?"

"Excellent. Where did you learn to cook?"

"Mama Behr made sure we all knew how to cook."

Mama Bear? Oh, right. That was his last name. Not spelled that way. She smiled. "Mama Behr was a good woman."

"Yes, she is."

He dug into his food as if he hadn't eaten in days. His table manners weren't rude, he just looked to be starving. Guess she'd worked him hard last night. Pun intended.

***

Sebastian didn't want the meal to end. He poured Sally and himself some more coffee. He lounged in the chair, happy the tow truck hadn't come yet. Sally was a little more animated now that she'd had two cups of caffeine.

He realized ten minutes ago that she was naked under that robe. He'd catch glimpses of her creamy skin as she moved to eat or pass him salt. Now that his stomach was full, he wanted to take off that robe and do her on the kitchen table.

Down, Sebastian. This was wooing, not mauling. Subtle. Romance. Sex can wait for a little bit. If she were also a bear, she'd understand. She was human so she needed a gentler hand.

"What are you staring at?" she said.

"You're even more beautiful in the morning."

She blushed. "I am not. I'm sure I look like we had sex all night."

"We did have sex all night."

"But I don't want to look like that."

She fussed with her hair. He took her hands in his. "You look fine, Sally. I like it. I'd like to see you again like this."

She blushed again and it brought out the freckles on her nose. He wanted to kiss those freckles, but he knew what that would lead to. They would be naked.

He heard a truck on the driveway. "Must be my tow."

She followed him and he wished she hadn't. The driver didn't need to see her in just a robe. He felt protective of her. No one needed to know what he had.

She stood on the porch, watching the transaction.

"You called for a tow?" the man said.

He didn't make eye contact with Sebastian. Instead, he looked at Sally. He was clearly undressing her with his eyes. Sebastian felt the beast coming out. He had to tamp it down. Sally wasn't his yet.

He waved his hand in front of the man. "I'm right here."

"That's one hot chick."

Sebastian resisted the urge to punch the man. "She's not a chick. She's a woman and she's not in the market."

"Then she should stop advertising."

"I can call another tow truck," Sebastian said.

He'd never felt such a protective surge in his life. Had to be part of her being his mate. How would he go through the rest of his life without punching someone?

The man finally looked at him. "No harm done, man. She's just hot."

"Fine. She's hot, but she isn't yours to look at."

A few minutes later, his truck was on the flat bed and he'd retrieved some tools to work today.

Sally tapped her foot on the porch as Sebastian came back up on it. She had her arms crossed. "What the hell was that?""What?" he looked at her wide-eyed. Innocent. As if he had no idea what he did."What were you saying to that man?""That he shouldn't call you a chick and that he shouldn't ogle you. I wish you didn't go out on the porch in just your robe.""Who the hell are you to tell me what to do? And if I want to be ogled I will be." She went up on tiptoes to get into his face. "By any man I want. You don't own me."He stepped back his hands up between them. "Whoa. I was defending your honor.""It isn't yours to defend. We slept together. You don't suddenly have domain over my body.""I wasn't assuming I did. I was being a gentleman. I don't think men should openly gawk at a woman. Especially not when she's on her own property."She eyed him. "I don't like when a man assumes he owns me.""I don't own you, Sally. I would never assume to do that. I just don't think it was right o

Someone knocked on the front door. Sally wasn't expecting anyone, but she opened it without looking. Big mistake."Hello, Sally," Colin Chambers, her abusive ex-husband, said.A chill went down Sally's spine. She knew this day might happen. She'd hoped it wouldn't. Her tracks had been covered, but clearly not well enough. He must've heard about her aunt willing her this property. She wished Sebastian was here. At least there'd be someone with her. Oh, Sebastian. Her heart roared in her chest, knowing that she had to stand up to him at least one more time. The restraining order clearly wasn't helping her.Sally tried to close the door, but Colin put his foot in the way. "Not happy to see me, Sally?""No. I'm not.""Well, that disappoints me."She had no idea how she was getting out of this. Her phone was charging in the kitchen, but she didn't want to run that way. She couldn't get there fast enough. Colin could run fast. He was an avid outdoorsman and kept himself in good shape."We s

Sebastian didn't like stepping away from a problem. He'd rather solve it, but he'd learned in the short time that he knew Sally, that she wasn't interested in his domineering ways. When the argument was important, when the situation warranted it, he would be the alpha male. He wasn't sure yet if this was one of those situations. He still wanted to know who that man was. Sally had clearly been frightened of him. Her white face told him so. He didn't want her to feel that way or think that she was alone in the world. If she realized she was his mate, she would have a whole den behind her. Mostly his brothers and himself, but there would be others in their far-flung family. She didn't need to be alone in the world. She didn't need to do it all herself. He went to work on the porch, taking his frustration out on the screws his was using to hold down the boards. He wanted to talk to him mother, but that wasn't possible. That escalated quickly. Sally had left Sebastian on the porch after lunch. He didn't even let her know that he was leaving. She happened to catch a glimpse of someone picking him up. He hadn't said goodbye and she regretted her words to him. Sally sighed as she leaned on the front door. She had an errand to do anyway. Grabbing her purse, she headed for the car. If Colin was back in her life, she needed to protect herself. Herself. This was up to her. She wouldn't rely on a man. Besides, if there were bears in the area, she might need a gun for them. The gun store sat in the middle of the block on Main Street. The town wasn't that big, but there were attractions all around it for those who liked the outdoors. Even in winter, which was what Sally had been counting on. Those people would fill her bed and breakfast. She opened the door and a blast of loud rock and roll hit her in the face. "Sorry." The man behind the counter turned down the music. "It helps me get into the mood to cle

Sebastian showed up for work on time the next day. Sally watched him park his truck. She wondered if she should tell him about what had happened last night. The sheriff had called her to let her know that Colin had checked out last night. In a hurry.Guess her nine millimeter had scared him. Then there'd been the bear. She'd wanted to shoot at it but didn't. She couldn't imagine why she didn't. There had been something about the bear. As if she knew that it wasn't a threat. It had growled at Colin but hadn't come near her.In fact, the bear had left as soon as Colin did. She'd stared at the woods for ten minutes after it left. She'd been scared, but maybe she hadn't needed to be. Why hadn't it gone after her?She couldn't puzzle it out. Not that she thought Sebastian would have an answer. She just needed to share her evening with someone. Someone who would be proud of her. Even if she'd sent him home last night, he would still be proud of her.She hoped. She hadn't cared about anyone

"Yes."Sebastian shuffled his feet on Sally's porch."That may be the sweetest bouquet anyone has ever given me. You picked them?"Her face hurt from the smile on it. What a sweet gesture. Better than anything store bought. She sniffed them, then motioned for him to come inside. He cleans up well. She'd already seen him naked, but with a blazer and a button down shirt he was almost better. His hair was back in a tie. A little neater than he'd been earlier. She wanted to tug it loose and run her hands through it. She knew it would be soft. "I did pick them."She tugged him into her house. "Let me put them in a vase."She took his hand, leading him to the kitchen. Her heart fluttered at his touch. She knew what those hands could do, but he'd said this was a date. He was going to take it slowly. That probably meant no sex. Maybe he had to learn to trust her before he could tell his secret. She couldn't blame him. She hadn't thought of this from his perspective. "You want a drink?"He l

Maybe Sebastian was the right guy.But his secret still nagged at her. "You're thinking too much," he said. "I can almost hear it."She laughed. "It's just how I am.""Why not just feel.""Feel?"He stopped, turning to her. He took her head in his hands. "Just feel. What is your heart telling you to do?"She took a deep breath, then let it out. He crawled up to her then lay on his side. He made a small growl. She reached down to touch his fur. She rubbed his stomach and she had to laugh. She wanted to lean, pretend a casual posture, but she couldn't. Not with the uncertainty in his eyes. Wyatt had never done anything to scare her. Until now. "You ready?"She nodded. "Go ahead."She only had less than an hour before the kidnappers would call again. Impatience warred with curiosity. He turned to her while standing in the yard. At first she blinked her eyes as if she wasn't sure what she was seeing. A few minutes later, where Wyatt had stood, a bear now stood. She looked around the yard. Wyatt hadn't moved. She'd been watching the whole time. The bear went down on all four paws. Her brain told her to be afraid. She wasn't. This had to be Wyatt, but what had happened? The bear approac

I know that's hard for you."He was right. She didn't trust easily. Too many important people had let her down in life. Including Wyatt. He seemed as if he wanted to make that up to her. She patted him. "We need to get to work.""Ever the practical one," Wyatt said.He kissed her cheek, then stood. He held out his hand, helping her up. "Fine."Wyatt pushed him down. He wanted to let his bear loose to tear this man from limb to limb, but he couldn't do that on Main Street. He'd threatened his mate and that was not a forgivable offense. "Tell your boss," Wyatt said, then walked back to his truck. He didn't look back at the man. The message had been clear enough and Wyatt knew the man was a bully. He wouldn't attack Wyatt because he knew he'd lose. Wyatt climbed into his truck. He let his heart slow down. He wasn't one to beat up people, but he wouldn't back down from a fight. Not when he had to defend someone in his den. Especially when he had to defend his mate. He must have been following her to know where she'd been working. Fiona pulled her phone out of her pocket. She was going to have to fire her crew. They weren't going to be needed. She was giving the job to Wyatt. And getting out of town. No matter what he said, he couldn't protect her from this. She couldn't let this spill over onto him.She walked outside with Jeb who was calling the cops. Wyatt pulled up. He climbed out, concern on his face. Fiona knew that she didn't have a poker face. Wyatt wasn't going to budge on this condition. He wanted Fiona in his life. In his house. In his bed. That way he could prove to her that they belonged together. Prove that she was his mate, and if he did, he wouldn't have to live alone for the rest of his life. He'd protect her. Protect her sister. They were all part of his den. He'd die for them. That's the deal.So she could sleep with him. Fiona used a band on her arm and pulled her hair back into a ponytail. He preferred her hair down, but this meant she was getting down to work. "I guess I'll pack."He couldn't hide his grin. With Fiona, the victories were few and far between. He wouldn't gloat, but he'd enjoy it. "How can I help?"She looked around, then laughed.
