Sally took a deep breath as Sebastian turned to face her. She blinked. His face grew more hair. His face then changed, his nose elongating. His hands grew bigger and furrier. She wasn't sure that she was seeing what she thought she was seeing. She sat down on the step, her legs not able to hold her.

Sebastian was turning into a black bear. A bear. Her lover was a bear. She gasped. He stood on his hind legs. She watched as he went on all four paws and lumbered toward her. She wasn't sure what to do.

Some part of her knew this was okay. He crawled up to her then lay on his side. He made a small growl. She reached down to touch his fur. She rubbed his stomach and she had to laugh. He'd rolled onto his back, clearly enjoying her touch.

He was a large bear. Even larger than he was as a human. She felt no fear. This was Sebastian. This was his secret.

She rubbed his tummy with both her hands and he let out an obvious noise of pleasure. He made that sound when he came.

So she was in love wit

Caleb Behr looked at the smaller than usual blond-haired boy while crossing his fingers behind his back. The boy was Josh Leight and he'd struck out the last four times at bat. The boys' knuckles shown white from his grip on the bat. His face held a fear that a little boy shouldn't feel. Caleb would've done anything to take the disappointment away from him. The boy was only eight and life had so much more to knock him down with. Why did he have to deal with this now? Caleb wanted to close this eyes. He wanted to wish away this moment, but as his father had taught him, these moments were the teaching opportunities. How Josh dealt with this failure would help him later in life. Assuming he dealt with it well. Assuming his divorced parents had given the little boy the skills.Three pitches. Three strikes. At least he went down swinging. Josh stomped out of the batter's box, but he didn't throw the bat. He could see the kid squeezing his eyes shut probably to stop the tears. Caleb walked

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 18: Her Son's Coach

Melinda Leight watched as Caleb walked towards her as she finished her call for a tow truck. Her too-old-to-be-running vehicle was indeed not running. Carl had already left. Not that she wanted to call her ex for help. That would be the last thing she wanted to do. With very little in her savings account, she didn't want another expense, but now she'd have to have the car towed. And fixed. And pay for it somehow. She could pick up an extra shift somewhere, but then what would she do with Josh? She didn't want to give Carl any reason to take custody of her son. It had been a battle and they were finally in a good place. She figured with Carl's new baby coming along, he might lose interest in having Josh with him full time. Melinda would've thought Carl would support her going back to school. When she was on her feet, she was going to go back to court to tell them she didn't need his alimony anymore. Just the child support. She'd be able to support herself. She should be bitter about

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 19: She's The One

When Caleb put his hand on Melinda's back, he knew. With every fiber of his being, he knew. Melinda was his mate. He resisted the urge to pull away as if his hand had been burnt. This was not what he wanted. Sebastian had warned him that he would resist at first. Well, he was resisting. He'd get her home and then leave her there. No need to keep contact with her. There was no way he wanted to get married any time soon. Someday. Not now. Not after his last relationship. He didn't want another woman in his life.Too bad he had to touch Melinda. He helped her with her helmet."Is that too tight?" he asked."No, it's fine."He started the bike after he put on his own helmet. He motioned for Melinda to climb on. She did then wrapped her arms around him. Oh. God. This was going to kill him. He wanted to mark her. Mate with her. Or at least the bear part of him did. He had to tamp down his wild side. There was no way he wanted to know his mate right now.He wanted to be a free man for a whi

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 20: Her Proposition

Melinda looked serious. Caleb hadn't let go of her hand yet and his bear was growling to get out. To make her his. That wasn't what she was talking about. She was talking about sex. Just sex. What red-blooded male wouldn't want no-strings-attached sex? Him, of course, but this was his mate. If he messed this up, he wouldn't get another shot. What if he might want a mate later on? A few years from now? He'd be sunk. He'd be without a mate. Then again, maybe if he could keep this relationship as she wanted, in the future they would already be together. Might be the plan."Your silence is deafening." She pulled away her hand. "Sorry I asked."Shit. Now he'd offended her. "I'm just taken aback. No woman has ever asked me for that. They all seem to want to marry me after the first date."She chuckled. "No. Sorry. Don't plan on marrying. Certainly not in the near future. Or maybe ever."He nodded. She'd had a bad time with her ex. He could see that written on her face. "Sex only?""Yes. Ju

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 21: She Was Too Big

Melinda couldn't believe that Caleb was carrying her to her bedroom. No one had carried her since she was child. Carl had always complained that she weighed too much. That had left out shower sex, too, something Melinda had always wanted to experience. In Caleb's arms, she felt petite, but safe. Not that she needed safe. She could take care of herself. No one messed with the big girls. She nipped at his neck as he carried her. "You're so fucking strong."He chuckled. It rumbled up from the depths of his sexy body. He was muscled. She couldn't imagine he had an ounce of fat on his body. Why did he find her attractive? He could have any woman he wanted."Don't think too much," he said.Could he hear her thoughts? She should stop thinking. She wanted him naked. That she knew. He laid her on the bed as if she were fine china. He stood, looking over her. "You are so damned sexy."He didn't need to compliment her. He only needed to have sex with her, but the idea that he found her attract

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 22: Breakfast

"You need some food?" Melinda said."Uh. I need to wake up before I know what I want.""You're not awake after that?"She climbed out of bed. Completely naked. As if she did this sex friend thing every day of her life. She pulled a robe on and Caleb was sad not to have her body on display. "Awake, but not coherent."She laughed. "I'll be in the kitchen."She shouldn't have to feed him again. He pulled on his jeans, not bothering to button them. Melinda was in front of the stove. The sun was just peeking over the horizon. There wasn't enough light to know what the day would be like yet."You don't have to feed me."She laughed, glancing over her shoulder. "I'm not done with you and you need your strength."His cock twitched at that idea. "I'm going to have to go to work at some point.""I know. I do, too."She was making pancakes. Pancakes. What a mom. What was that joke about dating a MILF? The best part was the juice box the next morning. The thought made him chuckle."What's funny?"

Melinda laughed. "It's nothing.""But you did get laid."Melinda smiled. More than once. "Yes.""Serious?""Not a bit."Janet's one eyebrow went up. "Oh?""Just sex."Janet had been patient, so she decided to give up a little of her secret. "You? You have a friend with benefits?" Janet said. She finished with the salt then worked on the pepper shakers. It was the last thing they needed to do before the dinner waitresses would be in. She wiped her hands on her apron. "I do. He's hot and hunky and very good in bed," Melinda said, warming to the topic. "I want details. Let's go for coffee after shift.""Okay."She didn't have Josh this afternoon. She wouldn't see her son until Sunday. She missed him when he was gone but had gotten used to it somewhat. Was this what an empty nest felt like? "What's his name?""I'm not telling," Melinda said. She had to hold something back."Is he hung?""Like a horse."Janet let out a loud laugh. Mr. Corcoran looked up from his office, glaring at her.

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 24: He Spends the Night

Melinda debated kicking Caleb out before she fell asleep, but she didn't. It was nice to have a male body next to her. Nice to feel desired, but now he had to go. She had things to do and her stomach was rumbling.Wait. She opened her eyes. Caleb wasn't in bed. He'd left in the night. That was fine. She let out a sigh of relief. Then she smelled something. Coffee. She heard noises in her kitchen. Someone was moving around. Would a burglar make coffee? She pulled on a nightshirt, then padded into the kitchen. Caleb's face was in her refrigerator."What are you doing?" she said.He glanced over at her. "Making you breakfast.""Uh. No.""No?"He pulled out a carton of eggs and a package of bacon. Her normal Saturday morning breakfast. It was a treat since she didn't always have time before she ushered Josh off to school during the week. On warm days like this morning, she would eat it out on her patio before Josh woke up. On days he was with his father, she had a second cup of coffee. No

Fiona had no idea what Wyatt was so concerned about. What could he possibly show her that would be a problem? Things had been going well. "You wait on the porch, but you can approach me when I'm done. I won't hurt you. It's still me."Okay. That was weird. She didn't know what to expect. She wanted to lean, pretend a casual posture, but she couldn't. Not with the uncertainty in his eyes. Wyatt had never done anything to scare her. Until now. "You ready?"She nodded. "Go ahead."She only had less than an hour before the kidnappers would call again. Impatience warred with curiosity. He turned to her while standing in the yard. At first she blinked her eyes as if she wasn't sure what she was seeing. A few minutes later, where Wyatt had stood, a bear now stood. She looked around the yard. Wyatt hadn't moved. She'd been watching the whole time. The bear went down on all four paws. Her brain told her to be afraid. She wasn't. This had to be Wyatt, but what had happened? The bear approac

Wyatt squeezed her hand. Asking for help was hard for Fiona. He was proud that she was putting aside her pride to save her sister. When the forms were filled out, Colin sent them via email to his boss. "Let me walk over to his office and talk to him," Colin said.He left. Fiona turned to Wyatt. "I'm not sure how I'm going to repay this.""We'll work it out.'"You shouldn't take this debt on. It's my problem. I'll figure it out."He wished she would stop. She would understand as soon as she realized they were fated to be together. "Fi, it's okay. Let's worry about getting your sister back.""I'm scared for her," Fiona said."I know."Wyatt kissed her hand. "They have no reason to hurt her.""I hope not."Colin came back with a smile on his face. "Good news. It's all set. The money will be in your account in twenty-four hours."Wyatt stood, then hugged his cousin. "Thanks, Colin.""Not a problem."Fiona hugged him also and Colin sent Wyatt a leer over her shoulder. Wyatt showed his co

Wyatt shifted off of Fiona, then came back to lie next to her. He nuzzled her neck, his hand resting on her stomach. "I wish we could stay here forever," he murmured."That would be glorious. Pretend that the world wasn't out there. That nothing was wrong.""We'll work it out, Fi. I promise.""How can you be so sure?" she said. He groaned. "I just am. Trust me. I know that's hard for you."He was right. She didn't trust easily. Too many important people had let her down in life. Including Wyatt. He seemed as if he wanted to make that up to her. She patted him. "We need to get to work.""Ever the practical one," Wyatt said.He kissed her cheek, then stood. He held out his hand, helping her up. He pulled her into his arms, his face against her neck. She couldn't imagine being anywhere else. She loved this man, and as much as that scared her, she knew he wouldn't break her heart. At least not intentionally. He was a grown man who clearly knew what he wanted. And that was her. Her phon

"That bitch is trouble. You should stay away from her.""I don't take advice from punks. I expect you to deliver this message to your boss.""Fuck you."Wyatt smacked his head against the wall again. "Do it… Or what I do next will be worse."The man gritted his teeth. Then he nodded. "Fine."Wyatt pushed him down. He wanted to let his bear loose to tear this man from limb to limb, but he couldn't do that on Main Street. He'd threatened his mate and that was not a forgivable offense. "Tell your boss," Wyatt said, then walked back to his truck. He didn't look back at the man. The message had been clear enough and Wyatt knew the man was a bully. He wouldn't attack Wyatt because he knew he'd lose. Wyatt climbed into his truck. He let his heart slow down. He wasn't one to beat up people, but he wouldn't back down from a fight. Not when he had to defend someone in his den. Especially when he had to defend his mate. When he was sure he was calm enough, he started the truck. He pulled up

"Can't say. Have you called the cops?""I wanted to wait until you got here," he said. "Or Wyatt.""Wyatt hasn't been here?" Fiona said."No. I was waiting for one of you.""Call the cops. We need to make a report to get the insurance money."But she knew who this had been and there would be no evidence left behind. He must've left her place last night and come here. He must have been following her to know where she'd been working. Fiona pulled her phone out of her pocket. She was going to have to fire her crew. They weren't going to be needed. She was giving the job to Wyatt. And getting out of town. No matter what he said, he couldn't protect her from this. She couldn't let this spill over onto him.She walked outside with Jeb who was calling the cops. Wyatt pulled up. He climbed out, concern on his face. Fiona knew that she didn't have a poker face. He could probably tell something was wrong. He glanced at Jeb then back to her."What's going on?" he said."Someone pulled out the wi

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 56: Wyatt Being Stubborn

Wyatt wasn't going to budge on this condition. He wanted Fiona in his life. In his house. In his bed. That way he could prove to her that they belonged together. Prove that she was his mate, and if he did, he wouldn't have to live alone for the rest of his life. He'd protect her. Protect her sister. They were all part of his den. He'd die for them. That's the deal.So she could sleep with him. Fiona used a band on her arm and pulled her hair back into a ponytail. He preferred her hair down, but this meant she was getting down to work. "I guess I'll pack."He couldn't hide his grin. With Fiona, the victories were few and far between. He wouldn't gloat, but he'd enjoy it. "How can I help?"She looked around, then laughed. "You think I have trunks and trunks of clothing hidden somewhere?""I guess not."He settled on her desk chair to watch her. She scurried around in a haphazard way. Of course she would. That was Fiona. If there was an efficient way to do something, she would do the op

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 55: She Has a Secret

"Fi, come on. I'm here. I'm willing to listen without judgment. If nothing else, we are friends. We work together. I respect you and your skills. At least give me a chance to help."Fiona shook her head. Shit. She was going to be stubborn. Wyatt looked around her apartment. It was her usual mess. He found a chair and sat on it. "I'm not leaving until you tell me."Sometimes with Fiona, you just had to dig in and wait. He'd stay all night and into tomorrow to figure this out. She was his mate. He owed her at least that much. Even if she never felt anything for him, he was going to protect her. She was part of him, part of his den. He couldn't walk out of here knowing she was in danger. Especially not knowing if that person could come back. Nope he was here for the duration. If she left, he'd follow. He wasn't letting her go that easily a second time. She sighed. Her gaze traveled back up to him and held his. "Okay, I'll tell you."***Fiona couldn't lie to Wyatt, but she didn't really

Fiona huffed, then turned back to stomp her way to her truck. Damn, that woman could be stubborn. Wyatt climbed into his truck, then waited for Fiona to pull out. She did and didn't try to lose him. He stopped in front of her apartment. She walked up to him. He rolled down his window. "Happy?" she said."Yes.""Good night, Wyatt."She turned away from him. He watched her climb the steps to her place. He waited until she unlocked the door, then turned on a light. He waited a few more minutes before driving off. Something wasn't right about this situation. Someone could've been waiting in her apartment. He should have checked first. Shit. He turned his truck around. Wyatt knew he wouldn't sleep until he was sure she was safe. That was his job. Even if she didn't know that she was his mate, he had to protect her. He'd failed when she left, but now she was back. She was his responsibility even if she didn't like it, no matter how stubborn she was, he would always push back when it came

  • Behr Brothers   Chapter 53: Not Talking Business

"What are we supposed to talk about? Business is what we have in common.""How does it feel to be back here?" Wyatt said. Fiona hadn't really thought about it. Her only reason for coming back to was show Wyatt that she didn't need him. That she was as competent as an electrician as he was. She'd done that, sort of. "Uh, I guess okay.""It hasn't really changed much.""No, it hasn't."What a banal conversation. Was this how it was going to be for them for the rest of the job? This awkwardness?"How's your sister?""She's fine. In college and loving it.""You didn't want to go to college?"She'd had that dream at one point, but when her parents died, the desire had died with it. "I'm not cut out for sitting in a classroom."He nodded, then sipped his beer. "I can understand that. I'm not interested in theory. Tell me how something works for me. How can I use it in my job?""Exactly. You wire something, a light works. It's more rewarding," she said."Instant gratification.""Yeah, in a w
