"Yeah. My truck won't start. My brother can't come and give me a jump for an hour."

Sally pondered the possibilities. There was enough food for both of them. She couldn't just let him sit in his truck while she ate. Pushing the door open farther, she motioned him inside. "Come in. I'll feed you dinner while you wait."

He put up his hands, not moving from the doorstep. "You don't have to do that."

She eyed him. He looked tired and a big guy like that was probably hungry. "Yeah, I do. I'd feel guilty if I did any less. I have plenty. I don't know how to cook for one."

She didn't. She'd cooked for her family for years. Soon she'd be cooking for guests. More than just herself. She ate leftovers more nights than not because she always made so much.

He cocked his head, a lock of hair falling across his forehead. He had those forearms that spoke of hard work. As if they'd been sculpted from marble. "You sure I'm not putting you out?"

He stood on the doorstep. He was adorable in his shyness. Not that he didn't have a presence. This boy did. Ahem, man. He was all man.

She stepped aside to let him in. "Please come in. You can tell me if my recipe is good or not."

He nodded. "Is there any way I can take a shower? I really don't smell good and wouldn't want to stink up your kitchen."

"There's a bathroom at the top of the steps. It has towels, shampoo, and soap."

He smiled. The grin lit up his face and she wanted to kiss him. Damn. He was hot and sexy and a whole lot of man.

"Thank you."

He disappeared up the steps and Sally was left to think about him naked and soapy in her shower. She stirred her soup. It was a hardy winter soup. A little early for it, but the nights were turning cooler each week.

She wondered if Sebastian would have just stayed out in his truck if she hadn't invited him to dinner. She shrugged. She'd done the right thing.

Going back to the kitchen, she hummed. The shower ran then turned off. That was a short shower for such a big guy. She didn't care. She had a well, so she didn't pay for water. Just the electricity to pump it, and if she did well, she'd put solar panels on the roof to cut down on that cost.

Her five year plan for sure. Not right now. Today her goal was to get this place into shape and get it open. Sebastian was going to have a lot of work in the next three months. She'd be seeing a lot of him.

Was that a good thing or not? She was already picturing him naked in the shower.

"That smells great," he said from the door. She jumped.

His hair was wet and the curls hung almost to his shoulders. Shit. He was hot. Too bad she'd sworn off men. She'd bet those hands were pretty good at many things.

"Have a seat. It's ready. Can I get you a beer?"

He nodded then sat at her kitchen table. The room felt small with him in it. Her mouth dried because she was hyperaware of him. He smelled of the soap in the shower, but also of man. A great scent for sure.

He could be a roll in the hay. Just a night of fun. Could she do that? She'd spent her whole life doing for others. She should do something just for herself.

She poured his soup into a bowl, then put the beer and the food in front of him.

"Thank you."

His dark eyes seemed to look into her soul. She was sunk. This man was too sexy and she knew she was going to sleep with him. She wouldn't regret the sex. She'd regret it if he refused to work for her anymore.

What a dilemma.

***

The food smelled amazing and so did she. Sebastian wanted to shove everything off the table and take her now. That would not be the right thing to do. He'd lose the job. He'd lose her and that would mean he'd spend the rest of his days alone.

Oh, he'd have plenty of physical partners, but no one to love. Did he need love? No, but his body wanted Sally that was for sure. He waited until she sat with her bowl before he dug in. Damn. This was good soup. He cooked but not like this.

"Is it okay?"

He realized she'd been staring at him. He wiped his mouth with his napkin. "Yes, ma'am."

"Please don't call me that. I'm Sally."

"Yes, Sally. My brothers and I can cook, but not as well as you."

It was a hearty soup. A lot of stuff in it and he thought the broth was both chicken and tomato-based.

"There is more than one of you?"

Her head was cocked to one side. She blinked. It does say Three Behrs on his truck. He chose not to point that out. "Yes. I have two younger brothers."

"What do they do?"

"One is an electrician and the other is a plumber."

"Hence the name of your company. Three Behrs Construction."

He doubted that she really got it. She would eventually if he had his way. All of his secrets would be revealed, but that was getting ahead of himself. "Yes. Three brothers."

"So one of you is just right."

She took a spoonful of her soup, but she was staring at him with a come-hither look on her face. Was she coming onto him? He never understood women, but he'd never had to. Growing up in the woods, he didn't encounter them too often. She was looking at him as if she could take a bite of him.

Hm. "I guess so."

He didn't know what to say to that. She smiled, but it looked almost predatory. She was a beautiful woman. Hot body. Nice rack. Did she really want him? Could it be that easy?

His phone dinged. He pulled it out of his pocket. "My brother says he can't get here until tomorrow."

She laughed. "I might have a bed for you."

He hoped she did. He hoped it was her bed. That would be just right.

"I'm sorry to impose," Sebastian said. He hadn't planned this. Fate stepped in and made it so.

"Trust me, you won't be imposing," she said.

"No?"

"No. I'm exacting a price."

"Oh?" This might be good. "What is it?"

"One night in my bed. No strings, no promises." She stared at him, unblinking.

He swallowed. Every man's dream. He hoped in that night that he could get her to fall in love with him. Because he was pretty sure that she was his mate. He only had one and if she didn't fall in love with him then he'd be alone for the rest of his life.

That would not be just right.

Sally couldn't believe that those words had actually come out of her mouth. Sebastian wasn't running from her house. She knew she wasn't the ideal woman, but she was good in bed. She knew this. She'd bet he was good in bed. She took another spoonful of her soup. Sebastian stared at her with his spoon halfway to his mouth. Maybe the thought appalled him. Maybe he'd lost his appetite and couldn't imagine having sex with her. She was about to run from the room. From embarrassment. Had she really just propositioned this man that she'd only met hours before? Life was lonely out here. Too lonely. Clearly, she had to update her online dating profile and get back on that horse. Sebastian put down his spoon. She could see him swallowing hard, his Adam's apple moving up and down. She'd shocked him and now she had no idea how to get out of this situation. She'd never had anyone turn her down, but she hadn't asked too many men to share her bed. Most men thought she was desperate because of her

"You are so beautiful, Sally."She smiled. Sebastian would have thought he'd given her gold. Had no one ever told her that? Had someone told her she was ugly? That was a sin. He would have to make it up to her. At least for tonight. He wasn't ready to make any promises past now.She blushed a little and he wanted to make up for all those assholes that had come before him. They were idiots. He unhooked her bra, letting her nice rack loose. Rosy nipples stood at attention as if peering at him. He took one breast in each hand, licking his lips. "These are amazing."He knelt down to worship them.***Sebastian had said she was beautiful. Of course he liked her tits. Every man did. That wasn't surprising, but he'd stopped and told her that she was beautiful. Took away her breath. Almost made her want to cry. He hadn't just ripped off her clothes or expected a blowjob. He wanted to have sex with her. Please her. Damn. Maybe there was more to Sebastian than she realized. Maybe he wasn't lik

Sally woke up, wondering why she was sore. Had she worked that hard yesterday? Oh. Wait. Sebastian. She sat up, pulling the covers over her naked breasts. He was gone. She sighed. Part of her was happy. Part of her was disappointed. Then she heard a noise downstairs. Crap. Someone was in her house. She snagged her robe and wrapped it around her. Then she grabbed the bat from under the bed. Creeping down the steps, she tried to figure out where the person was. In the kitchen. Okay. Not the best place to steal anything. Her valuables, what little she had, were not in the kitchen. She tiptoed to the door.Sebastian. Wearing just jeans. No shirt. No shoes. Took her breath away. He was beyond sexy. He was also cooking breakfast from what she could smell. He stood looking out the back window. It was her favorite view also. He spun around. She felt silly with the bat in her hand. His gaze went to the bat then back to her face, a wry grin on his face. "I thought I had an intruder."That g

Sally tapped her foot on the porch as Sebastian came back up on it. She had her arms crossed. "What the hell was that?""What?" he looked at her wide-eyed. Innocent. As if he had no idea what he did."What were you saying to that man?""That he shouldn't call you a chick and that he shouldn't ogle you. I wish you didn't go out on the porch in just your robe.""Who the hell are you to tell me what to do? And if I want to be ogled I will be." She went up on tiptoes to get into his face. "By any man I want. You don't own me."He stepped back his hands up between them. "Whoa. I was defending your honor.""It isn't yours to defend. We slept together. You don't suddenly have domain over my body.""I wasn't assuming I did. I was being a gentleman. I don't think men should openly gawk at a woman. Especially not when she's on her own property."She eyed him. "I don't like when a man assumes he owns me.""I don't own you, Sally. I would never assume to do that. I just don't think it was right o

Sebastian didn't like stepping away from a problem. He'd rather solve it, but he'd learned in the short time that he knew Sally, that she wasn't interested in his domineering ways. When the argument was important, when the situation warranted it, he would be the alpha male. He wasn't sure yet if this was one of those situations. He still wanted to know who that man was. Sally had clearly been frightened of him. Her white face told him so. He didn't want her to feel that way or think that she was alone in the world. If she realized she was his mate, she would have a whole den behind her. Mostly his brothers and himself, but there would be others in their far-flung family. She didn't need to be alone in the world. She didn't need to do it all herself. He went to work on the porch, taking his frustration out on the screws his was using to hold down the boards. He wanted to talk to him mother, but that wasn't possible. That escalated quickly. Sally had left Sebastian on the porch after lunch. He didn't even let her know that he was leaving. She happened to catch a glimpse of someone picking him up. He hadn't said goodbye and she regretted her words to him. Sally sighed as she leaned on the front door. She had an errand to do anyway. Grabbing her purse, she headed for the car. If Colin was back in her life, she needed to protect herself. Herself. This was up to her. She wouldn't rely on a man. Besides, if there were bears in the area, she might need a gun for them. The gun store sat in the middle of the block on Main Street. The town wasn't that big, but there were attractions all around it for those who liked the outdoors. Even in winter, which was what Sally had been counting on. Those people would fill her bed and breakfast. She opened the door and a blast of loud rock and roll hit her in the face. "Sorry." It had growled at Colin but hadn't come near her.In fact, the bear had left as soon as Colin did. She'd stared at the woods for ten minutes after it left. She'd been scared, but maybe she hadn't needed to be. Why hadn't it gone after her?She couldn't puzzle it out. Not that she thought Sebastian would have an answer. She wanted to lean, pretend a casual posture, but she couldn't. Not with the uncertainty in his eyes. Wyatt had never done anything to scare her. Until now. "You ready?"She nodded. "Go ahead."She only had less than an hour before the kidnappers would call again. Impatience warred with curiosity. He turned to her while standing in the yard. At first she blinked her eyes as if she wasn't sure what she was seeing. A few minutes later, where Wyatt had stood, a bear now stood. She looked around the yard. Wyatt hadn't moved. She'd been watching the whole time. The bear went down on all four paws. Her brain told her to be afraid. She wasn't. This had to be Wyatt, but what had happened? The bear approac

"I'm not sure how I'm going to repay this.""We'll work it out.'"You shouldn't take this debt on. It's my problem. I'll figure it out."He wished she would stop. I know that's hard for you."He was right. She didn't trust easily. Too many important people had let her down in life. Including Wyatt. He seemed as if he wanted to make that up to her. She patted him. "We need to get to work.""Ever the practical one," Wyatt said.He kissed her cheek, then stood. He held out his hand, helping her up. He pulled her into his arms, his face against her neck. She couldn't imagine being anywhere else. She loved this man, and as much as that scared her, she knew he wouldn't break her heart. "Fine."Wyatt pushed him down. He wanted to let his bear loose to tear this man from limb to limb, but he couldn't do that on Main Street. He'd threatened his mate and that was not a forgivable offense. "Tell your boss," Wyatt said, then walked back to his truck. He didn't look back at the man. The message had been clear enough and Wyatt knew the man was a bully. He wouldn't attack Wyatt because he knew he'd lose. Wyatt climbed into his truck. He let his heart slow down. He wasn't one to beat up people, but he wouldn't back down from a fight. Not when he had to defend someone in his den. Especially when he had to defend his mate. Wyatt wasn't going to budge on this condition. He wanted Fiona in his life. In his house. In his bed. That way he could prove to her that they belonged together. Prove that she was his mate, and if he did, he wouldn't have to live alone for the rest of his life. He'd protect her. Protect her sister. They were all part of his den. He'd die for them. That's the deal.So she could sleep with him. Fiona used a band on her arm and pulled her hair back into a ponytail. He preferred her hair down, but this meant she was getting down to work. "I guess I'll pack."He couldn't hide his grin. With Fiona, the victories were few and far between. He wouldn't gloat, but he'd enjoy it. "How can I help?"She looked around, then laughed.
