A Battle with Conscience

Andrew's POV

Earlier that day…

As soon as Sheila left the office, I let out a deep sigh of relief, glad to be free of that painfully awkward situation. The tension in my chest slowly eased, but before I could fully relax, James burst into laughter, shaking his head as he looked at me.

“What was that all about?” he asked, still chuckling. “You looked like a deer in headlights when she walked in. What’s going on?”

I forced a small smile, trying to brush it off. “I just wasn’t expecting her, that’s all,” I mumbled, hoping he’d drop it.

“Come on, Andrew,” James pressed, eyeing me curiously. “So why’d you lie about us going out for lunch? She brought you lunch! And you couldn’t even look her in the eye.”

I didn't reply, not sure how to explain what I was feeling as my eyes drifted toward the basket of food Sheila had brought. James noticed and leaned in, clearly interested in what was inside.
