I pull my hood closer as I try my best to keep dry, I never expected that this morning could get any worse than normal but, as is my luck, the weather decided it could ruin my day. The rain is lashing down heavily and while that alone wouldn’t normally be an issue, the wind was so strong that it ripped my cheap umbrella to shreds in minutes. I am still ten minutes away from work and I hurry down the street hoping to get there before I’m completely soaked.
Since the rain is in my eyes, I am finding it hard to see and suddenly I collide with a wall so hard, that I bounce off and land on my ass in a puddle.
‘Nooo! I don’t need this.’
As tears threaten to pool in my eyes, I look up to try to see what I bumped into and am met by a person, not a wall. He is standing at the crosswalk waiting for the light to change and I realise that if he hadn’t been there to block me, I would have walked out in front of the traffic. Before I have the chance to apologise his surprised look turns into a scowl and he glares at me.
I had been admiring his features but now he just reminds me of my stepfather, and I shiver in revulsion at the thought.
“Don’t you watch where you are going?”
I gape at the venom in his voice and sit there getting wetter and colder the more this exchange is dragged out.
“It’s raining!”
Is all I manage to say, and he scoffs at me before glancing at his watch. Since he doesn’t seem to be intending to help me up, I pick myself off the ground and stand at the cross walk waiting for the light.
“So, people like you don’t know what manners are.”
My anger boils at his comment and as the light changes, I throw my reply back at him before leaving him behind.
“Funny, I was going to say the same about you.”
Using my fury to push me, I make it to work within five minutes and I am still fuming, as I put my wet coat on the heater to try and dry it. I lean against it to try and warm myself for a few minutes before my shift is due to begin.
“Wow girl you are drenched!”
I turn and lock eyes with Anya my work colleague and I guess friend, but I only see her here, so I stick to the former. She is pretty with blonde hair cut into a short bob style and pale blue eyes. She wears little makeup but uses just enough to enhance her already beautiful features.
She is slim but not muscular, she told me once that she has a great metabolism and chooses not to exercise as it is too much effort. She is about my height, standing at around 5.7 and likes to stay current with the fashions that are popular.
“Mmm”
“Uh oh, what happened? I haven’t seen you this mad since that day someone groped you and you poured coffee in his lap.”
I laugh remembering that, but my mood is still sour.
“I bumped into a guy at the cross walk and fell on my ass, the guy didn’t even ask if I was okay, he just shouted at me for colliding with him and left me sitting there.”
“Ah one of those, well you are here now so you can forget him. Oh, your makeup is running.”
I pale and grab my makeup from my backpack before rushing to the small washroom we have in the back room. As I look in the mirror, I can see that my carefully arranged makeup is so smudged that I look like a panda. I hastily scrub everything off and glance at my reflection only once before I begin reapplying everything.
Every day I wear a thick layer of foundation over my skin to hide my scars, I don’t like pity and anytime I forget to apply this correctly the people I meet always have the same expression. It makes me feel like a victim, so I conceal it, and no one knows any different.
I have six, three-centimeter lines that are scattered along the left side of my face. The top one is above my eyebrow and the rest follow the contour of my cheek down to my chin. Then there is a seventh, a longer one, that starts below my right ear lobe then runs along my jaw about halfway before pointing down and continuing along my throat.
It was reported to police as a home invasion, but the truth is my stepdad is a violent drunk and he attacked me with a broken bottle. My mum was also hurt badly that day and I tried to intervene which is why he was able to do so much damage.
He reported it to the cops himself once he sobered up and realised how badly we were bleeding, saying he fought the intruder off once he returned home from the bar after meeting friends.
Since then, I just tried to stay away from him and a month after I turned eighteen, I finally moved out. This job earns me enough to pay my rent and eat healthily while having a little left over for clothes.
But living with him and his constant attacks for so many years took a tole and means I now despise the touch of others. I refuse to date, as I don’t need the complications that comes with that and I choose my wardrobe specifically to push people away.
I hide my body shape behind baggy clothing and always dress in dark colours or black. My hair I dye a mix of purple and blue and I wear thick eyeliner and black eyeshadow to hide the bags below my eyes and complete my look with black lipstick.
As soon as I turned eighteen, I began to include piercings and tattoos. Putting art on my skin helps me handle my demons, I focus on the dull pain while Anton works and afterwards, as I admire the image he has created, my heart is soothed for a time.
So far, I have fourteen piercings in my face and ears alone. My tongue, my lower lip, my nose, my left eyebrow, and five in each of my ears. I also have my nipples and belly button pierced.
As for tattoos I have a large set of wings on my back and a dragon on my right arm that wraps around from my shoulder to my wrist. Eventually I plan to cover all of my scars with art, except for my face, but there are many and tattoos are expensive.
I keep all of my skin covered at work with long sleeved tops, under my uniform, as I am a waitress in a cafe and some of the customers are elderly. They are lovely and accept me for all my oddities but if they ever saw my scars, I wouldn’t be able to face them again.
“There’s our Angel, goodness you are soaked through. What happened sweetie?”
“Oh, hi there Mrs. B, I just got caught out by the rain today. It’s okay, I will dry off soon enough it’s just a little water.”
“You are shivering little one, best you make sure that you wrap up warm when you get home later. Nothing worse than getting a head cold at this time of year.”
“I will do that, thank you. Would you like anything extra today? Or just your usual?”
“Ahh coffee and pancakes is the only way to start the day. You know that.”
“Hahaha okay, here is your coffee and two orders of maple syrup pancakes are on their way.”
“Thank you, Angel.”
I wander through the tables collecting orders from other tables and other regulars. Many comment on my state of dishevelment and all with such concern for my health that I find heartwarming.
I work quickly and without mistakes and my attention to detail is what makes my boss happy to allow me to keep my image instead of insisting on looking like everyone else and strangely enough, the cafe has become more popular in the three years I have worked here.
Some younger teens have also started to use this as a place to stop for a snack on the way to classes at the local college and it’s rare that anyone causes any trouble.
Two gentlemen are sitting near the back, so I make my way over to see if they wish to order anything.
“Good morning gentlemen, what can I get you today?”
“Black coffee no sugar for me please sweetie and a latte for my associate.”
“Coffee, black no sugar and a latte, anything to eat sir? I can recommend the tea cakes they were freshly baked in our kitchen this morning.”
“No, thank you.”
“Alright then, here is your coffee and I will be right back with the latte.”
The two gentlemen in expensive suits are new today, I haven’t seen them here before and they continue their conversation as I walk away. I made as little eye contact as possible while I spoke due to my nervousness around unknown males. Yet I still noticed that the second guy seemed vaguely familiar although he barely looked my way, so I didn’t spare him another glance either.
The one who spoke seemed nice, as I appraise him from where I stand near the latte machine, I see that he has brown hair and hazel eyes, he is also clean shaven to compliment the crisp suit he is wearing.
I prepare the latte in my signature way with a wing decoration in the foam and bring it over to them. Their conversation halts once more as I lean over and place the drink in front of the second man.
“There you go. If there is anything else, you need whilst you are here, please just let me know.”
“Thanks sweetie.”
I nod politely despite not liking the endearment and walk away to serve more customers. The two men stay for another hour before they both stand to leave. The entire time, my neck felt like it was crawling with spiders, as I could sense someone watching me while I worked but I ignored it. As they approach the counter the nice one smiles at me and I return it with a small one of my own.
“Thank you for your service sweetie, I will certainly consider coming again.”
“Thank you for visiting today, see you next time.”
He settles his bill and as I hand him his receipt, he grips my hand, I respond as if I have been burned and tug my hand back. Anya notices and quickly walks over to relieve me from the till.
“Sorry, excuse me.”
I apologise and quickly walk away to the back room to calm down, the last thing I need today is to have a panic attack in the middle of my shift. I am standing near the open window in the bathroom with the door closed when Anya knocks.
“Angel? Are you okay hun?”
“Yeah, I’m alright, thanks for that.”
“No problem, they asked me if you were alright, I said it was your turn in the kitchen and they left.”
“Thanks again.”
“Sure. But there is something you need to see.”
Welcome all, to Angel and Grant's story. This is a standalone book that is not connected to any of my previous works but should you enjoy this, then you can find my other stories here on the app too. Thank you for giving it a chance, I look forward to sharing this journey with you. I would also love to know what you think so please leave reviews as it is all vital to helping me to improve so I can continue to give you more to read.
I frown before opening the door and see Anya looking uncomfortable. “What is it?” “They left this and told me to make sure it came directly to you. It was a little scary, they were quite serious and intimidating.” I look at her hands and she is holding a small pocketbook, when I open it my mouth falls open in shock. “Oh my god! What did you do for them to leave you that?!” “I served them coffee and a latte, then left them alone.” “Really that’s it? Oh wait, was it your special latte?” I nod and she grins knowingly. “Stop it Anya, I don’t do anything to it that no one else would.” “Nuh uh, actually you do, everyone comments that it’s the best they have had anywhere. That’s why they keep coming back. You are special girl, and you don’t even see it.” “Whatever, it’s not like I’m going to be a waitress my whole life. I will eventually need to find a career.” “No don’t say that! My bestie can’t leave me here alone with all the teen pervs!” I laugh, she is so dramatic sometimes.
“So, are you ready to go?” “Mmm.” “Come on Grant, I know you’re hungry, maybe today we can order those tea cakes.” “What is it with you and that tiny cafe anyway?” “Best coffee in town and great service. Although, she hasn’t been there the last couple of days and no one will answer me when I ask.” That catches my attention, I know who he is talking about, the goth girl who served us on Monday, and made me that latte with the wing in the foam. I was surprised by the choice of decoration and was suspicious of Ellis when he sat staring at me over his regular coffee as I took a sip. I was shocked when the flavour hit my tongue, I am usually particular about how I like my coffee made but this was definitely the best latte I have ever tasted. A shame I was still in a bad mood, from my earlier run-in with some punk in the rain. Who bumps into someone else and doesn’t even apologise, then has the audacity to call me, rude? I didn’t see where they went as the rain was too heavy and I wa
“Hahaha, I told you not to.” “Oh, shut up.” He pouts like a child and not the twenty-eight-year-old man I know he is, and I laugh harder, causing him to throw his napkin at me. We get a few curious looks but for once I don’t care. “Come on I have a meeting at two, it’s time to leave.” “Ugh fine.” Ellis stands with me and we begin to make our way to the counter to pay. “You owe me for the coke stains on my jeans and you are going to pay for them to be cleaned.” “No, I don’t and no I am not, now if you would please leave, you are causing distress to the other customers.” “Bullshit! You poured my drink in my lap, I should have you fired.” “You are disrupting the peace, please leave.” He reaches out and grabs her wrist and in that moment is when I see it, just like when Ellis held her hand on Monday. Her body freezes and her pupils dilate, then her breathing begins to increase and I see perspiration forming on her brow. “That is quite enough.” My voice rings out clear, even tho
I thought he was going to touch my cheek and instinctively flinched but then he surprised me by pulling away. No one has ever noticed in time to stop before and I wonder if he is just naturally observant. But the severe expression on his face was more frightening to me than the idea of being touched by him, the similarity to my stepdad was enough for me to have flashbacks and I don’t like it. Once they leave, I get up and take a look at myself in the mirror, my makeup is a streaky mess but thankfully it is just my eyes. Everything else is still fine, so I rinse and reapply my eye makeup, while Anya watches from the doorway. “You know, despite the fact that the two of you argued so fiercely, I think he likes you.” “Ha! What, ever would make you think that a guy like him, would ever want anything to do with a person like me.” “Oh, just the fact that he marched your attacker off premises and then came looking for you to make sure you were okay. Broke the door down to help you and cau
“What are you trying to say Anya?” “Either he hates the way I make latte, or he was just there to check on you.” “Or both.” Says Jack between chews. I stare between the two of them as though they have both gone mad. “You are kidding me, right? It’s a public cafe, anyone can enter at any time for any reason. Maybe he just wanted a latte then changed his mind.” “He was sat down for a maximum of about ten minutes before he left.” “I still don’t believe he was there for me.” “Well, I may have a way to convince you.” I frown at her; I knew she wasn’t saying everything. “What now?” “Oh, only his business card that he left and asked me to give to you and only you. Also, a picture I took of him from my phone.” “Anya! You paparazzied a customer?” Jack shrieks. “No Jack, I took a quick picture, to show Angel that under the crisp suit, is a man who is just like the rest of us, but sexier.” “Oooh really let me see. I love ogling sexy men whenever I get a chance.” I roll my eyes at J
I was disappointed when I found out that she was not working on the weekend as I had wanted to attempt to clear the air before my flight. I stayed up late the night before plagued by thoughts of her and how we were unable to have a civil conversation, which only continued to annoy me more and more, as time passed by.I cannot understand why the thought of her disliking me upsets me so much. I never had this issue with my ex, in fact I only married her because our families insisted on it, there was never any love there.Attraction was not necessary for me to be able to coexist with her in our home and the sex was fine, but even when the frequency became less, I didn’t care. Now I see it for what it was, a sign that she was playing around outside of our relationship, whereas I remained loyal to her all the way through. It is hurting her now, which I relish because she broke the terms of our marriage by cheating and therefore, I have the right to demand a divorce and am not obligated to
I am gripping the phone with such force that my knuckles are white. My fury at what I just heard is frightening, even to me, but I don’t like the idea of her having another male close to her. I know she isn’t breaking any rules because there is nothing going on between us, but still, the idea of another man in her life is painful to me. The only thing that is able to calm me is the sound of my name on her lips. It’s the first time she has said it and somehow, it calms the rage in my blood, and I am able to even out my breathing a little. “Who was that Angel?” “Huh? Who? Oh, it doesn’t matter.” “It does to me, I would like to know who is with you.” “Why?” “Please tell me.” I can hear the edge in my voice as my anger is beginning to grow again at her avoidance of my question. “Grant, are you the jealous type? Because there is nothing between us, so what would give you that right?” “Angel, you are right, I am the jealous type; however, I also am right to be concerned for your we
I have no idea what possessed me to call him, but I am glad I did. Talking with him is so natural, it is just like breathing. There is never a time that we struggle to find a topic and before I know it, dawn is breaking on the horizon and I have spent the entire night talking to this man. His voice rolls over me like warm syrup and holds my attention like no other person ever has. It’s been an entire week since that first call and so far, we have spoken every night until either, really late or until dawn. I’ve managed to avoid telling him about my insomnia, as he either takes me at my word for not being tired or he insists on hanging up, when he realises how late it is, which I find really sweet. I never thought that I would place Grant and sweet in the same sentence, but it happened, and I was a giggling mess for about ten minutes afterwards. Jack and Anya have noticed a change in my mood, but I have not told them that I’m talking to him. Something is holding me back from saying a
Monday morning arrives before I know it and I wake up without feeling the need to run to the bathroom for the first time in a while. Stretching I turn and find that Grant is still in bed beside me which makes me frown because normally he is out before me in the mornings. Turning back to the side table I check the time and its showing 6am, I have to open the café today and with the extra distance I now have to travel it means that I will need to leave by 7 to make it on time.I throw the covers off and get up so I can take a shower before starting the day. I select some clothes from the closet first and then head to the ensuite. After my shower, I step out into the bedroom in my towel and when I look up, I can see that Grant is now awake and watching me.“Good morning, how come you aren’t already at the office?”“Did you forget? We planned to visit the Doctor this morning.” “I didn’t forget but I can’t go first thing, I have to open the café today and if I ask Tom for
I truly have some amazing people in my life. Everyone here is willing to chip in to help lessen the burden of trying to organise my father’s company and find the rats who are stealing from me. After breakfast Grant and I take Lobo outside and we spend an hour watching him enjoy the space while we play fetch with him.“Have you ever thought about having any more pets?” I ask Grant and he smiles.“Lobo is special, he was given to me by a good friend and as such he has had special training. But, until now my situation hasn’t really been ideal for having any other pets and therefore, I felt it wasn’t fair.”“I can see where you are coming from, and I agree with you. Would you consider it though? Once everything is settled down and sorted, I mean.”He smiles, “Angel, if you want to fill this big house with animals and anything else then I will happily support your every desire. But I agree that it should wait until everything is settled with the company and with your family. I don’t want t
When I open the door, I see Angela crouched by the toilet, so I rush in to check her.“Angel?! What’s wrong baby?”“Ugh, bad morning sickness. Sorry if I worried you but this is a more comfortable position for me at the moment.”“It’s okay, I just wish there was more I could do to help.”“Mmmhmm. Hopefully the doctor can give me something to help when we see her.”“I hate seeing you like this.”I lament as I watch her lean back over the pan to be sick once more. I hold her long hair back for her while she heaves and expels everything still present in her stomach. Her complexion is very light, she seems quite pale, and she is also sweating from the exertion. The last two retches only produce small amounts of saliva that she spits out, so once it seems that she doesn’t have anything more to bring up I hurry to the sink and get her a glass of water. She takes some light sips from it and settles back on her haunches.“Thank you, I think I’m past the worst of it now.”“How often have you be
Angela is pregnant!Ellis was right, but if I tell him that, his head will get bigger, and he will become unbearable so I will not be telling him anytime soon. What I am most shocked about is the fact that she told me so soon after finding out herself. All I can assume is that she must have enough trust in me and in us that she felt that she could be open and honest with me about this, and I love her all the more because of it.For so long I was stuck in a relationship with someone who didn’t care for me as a person and was only interested in material gain, who lied to me on many occasions to keep themselves out of trouble. Now that I have Angela, and I am experiencing such a caring and positive bond, I know I made the right decision to leave Rita, but also, I was right to follow my emotions with Angela. She truly is an Angel. As we leave the restaurant and climb into the car, I am still on cloud nine thinking about all the possibilities that could become reality once we meet with a do
“But with you Angel, everything is different. With you I want to see you carrying my children, and yes, I want more than one. I want to build a family with you and even marry you, when you are ready for that.” I am shocked by his candour and by his words. I never expected him to say all of that. My emotions swell and before I can stop them tears begin to fall from my eyes. “Angel? What’s wrong?” He panics and reaches across to hand me his handkerchief; I chuckle as I take it from him and try to dry my eyes. “Nothing is wrong. What you said was so beautiful that I couldn’t help myself. Sorry, my emotions are all over the place at the moment.” “Is there any particular reason why that would be? Are you sure you are alright.” “Yes, Grant, I am, I promise. But there is something that I should probably tell you, I just don’t want you to be too shocked.” “What is it?”
As we step into the foyer of the restaurant I am amazed by the interior décor. It is stunning, the walls are lined with mirrors and the Matre de stands behind a mahogany pedestal near a pair of wooden doors with glass panels that lead into the main dining room. “Good evening, Sir, Madam. My name is Paul may I take your reservation name?” “Cerulean.” “Please follow me.” He is almost falling over his own feet to lead us to our table, I find it a little comical. “Whatever did you say to them when you made this reservation?” “I don’t know what you mean. Besides, I asked Ellis to help me make the calls.” “Overworking your best friend again?” “No, not at all. He was happy to help me make this the perfect night for you.” I squeeze his arm affectionately to let him know that I appreciate the effort he is making. Crystal chandeliers give it a rich ambient feel, the tables are mahogany with white tablecloths on them. Every table has a pair of red roses in a vase as a centre piece whic
I hang up and glance out of my office window at the city below. Could it really be possible that I’m about to become a father?I think about my own father and the strained relationship I have with him and my brother now. I won’t let that happen to my family. No matter what happens I always want my children to know that they can come to me for anything and that I will be there to help and support them. Two hours later I message Simon to check in on things back at the house.G- “Are the girls home yet?”S- “Not yet but they are due shortly. I had a message from Anya recently saying they are en route.”G- “Good. I will get ready here at the office then head over to collect Angel in time for when she should be ready. Don’t let her be late, we have a schedule to keep.”S- “Don’t worry I’ve got everything organised.”G- “Thanks.”I put my phone away and try to focus on work, but I just can’t do it so instead I check the itinerary for the evening to make sure everything will go smoothly.“Yo
I’m sitting in a board meeting not really listening to what these men are saying because all I can think about is Angel and wanting to know if she is enjoying herself at the spa. She looked so tired this morning and I’m worried about how obsessed she has been with figuring out what is going on with the board of directors at her father’s company. That’s a point, I should audit my directors to make sure they aren’t trying to swindle me. Suddenly the door bursts open and everyone turns as Ellis rushes in. “Boss! I need you urgently.” “Ellis, I am in a meeting.” “Yes, I understand but this cannot wait, otherwise it might require divine intervention.” The way he stresses the word divine and stares intently at me has the hairs on my neck raising. “Excuse me gentlemen it seems I have to handle this immediately. Compile the rest of the reports and send to me to review by email. That will be all.” I leave the room at a brisk pace and head to my office. As soon as the door is closed, I
“Please madam, we have already apologised and explained that the spa was closed for the day exclusively by a very important client. We will be more than pleased to accommodate you here tomorrow, but we are unable to see you today.” “Impossible! I have an exclusive pass to enter here, and no one has the right to deny my access upon my request. How can she have more influence than me.” She then storms over in my direction and continues her barrage. “Tell me, how did you do it? You must have done something very shrewd and unspeakable to hook him like you have. Otherwise, why would he even look twice at someone as lowly as you? You are not fit to even lick the shoes of members of our society and yet you stand there as though you are better than me. Disgusting tramp!” In the distance, I hear the phone on the desk ringing until it is picked up, but my focus remains on Rita. Her words are hurtful and deliberate, but I don’t care for them. She was the one who had the affair and decided th
