“YOU’RE HERE!”
Vale turned his head, and he saw Rab walking in his direction. He had a teasing smile on his face, probably because he had witnessed him and Einille earlier.
“Hey!” He tapped his shoulder, “Actually, I’m about to go home. What the hell happened to Einille? She looks like a damsel in distress.”
Rab’s expression softened, “I pity her, honestly. They’ve broken up. But it’s for her own good. She’ll get over it soon. Now, it’s your time to shine!”
Vale chuckled, “I hope so. Let’s wait until she processed everything.”
“Be there for her. At least she is safe under your watch.”
“Of course!”
“By the way, what happened to your sponsorship in the coming shoot fest?” Rab asked, changing the topic.
“Yeah, I’ve talked to Sergeant Marquez earlier. Everything is settled. Are you going to join?”
Rab shook his head, “No. I’ll be a Range Officer. But Ein might join. You know her extraordinary shooting ability.”
“Great! That would be another chance for me to be near her.” Vale but his hands to the pockets of his jeans. He was feeling excited.
“Just take it easy. But please, make her happy.”
His face hardened, “Right,” he let out a sigh, “Let’s see each other during the event. I guess I’ll be busy watching over her.”
“No problem, bro.”
They exchanged fist bump before he got inside his car.
Vale deeply breathed out before wearing the seat belt. He put his gun into the compartment before starting the engine.
So, Einille finally knew that Hero made her his mistress. He predicted that this would happen sooner, but not this early.
He gritted his teeth, remembering Einille’s somber face. He prayed that she would not do anything stupid. However, he knew that she was a strong woman.
She will get over it.
He trusted Einille that she wouldn’t be sulking over a useless man. But for now, he would make sure to be with her always, even if she were not aware of it.
THE white roses found their new home at Einille’s glass flower vase on the center table. It looked perfect and fresh in her eyes, but she could not appreciate its beauty. She was still fuming in anger. Einille realized she was lucky that despite her reckless driving earlier, she got home in one piece.
She lay down on the couch, still trying to digest everything that happened. Why she trusted somebody who was not even deserving? Maybe, because of her inborn kindness that many people were abusing it.
She loved Hero, even his imperfections. She had seen his good sides, and she only focused from that angle—the reason she couldn’t hold her foolish heart from trusting too much. But she felt his love for her was real—or so she thought.
Before she formally became his girlfriend, she made background checks on Hero. She really didn’t know that he was married. She had seen his identification cards, and it stated there he was single. She even asked him to provide a Certificate of No Record of Marriage, and yes, it was also a document that proved that he was single! Now she realized all these documents were fake because she never verified them even once.
Cheater! Her jaw clenched. She was puzzled about everything. But Hero would not joke about him being married with two kids. They could break up anytime without being dramatic as this. What she got now?
She was mad to herself. It was her great mistake! All the red flags were visible, but she chose to ignore them because she was dumb and in love.
How can you be this stupid?
What an irony! She was intelligent, but when it comes to men, she was ignorant.
Hero was her second boyfriend. Her first cheated on her as well, and Hero was aware of that. And now that bastard would do this to her, too? Well, the only consolation that Hero never took advantage of her, physically at least.
She just turned twenty-eight a few months ago, and she had been planning to settle down next year, thinking Hero would be her groom. But it was all a lie. It was like she just woke up from a nightmare.
Hero’s documents and bank accounts were under her name because he insisted on saving for their future. Well, not that much, though. But it bothered her.
Einille pressed her fists tight. Hero brought her a never-ending problem that would ruin her life once this goes public.
She never wanted her name to be involved in a scandal like this. What if someday his wife came and embarrassed her? She hoped that would not happen because she would defend herself, whatever the consequences may be.
“Hey, Couz! I didn’t know you’re back.” Shari greeted her coming from her room, and she witnessed her staring blankly at the white roses.
“I’m exhausted,” she frowned.
“You’re always exhausted. Let me guess. You quarreled with Hero?”
She couldn’t lie to her cousin. She’d like to think Shari knew her more than herself.
“We broke up this morning.”
“Really? He dropped by here?” Shari was seated on the couch on the other side.
“No,” she hardly shook her head, “He just called me while I’m in the office.” She let out a heavy sigh.
How would she explain what happened? High chance that Shari might storm up at Hero’s place. Shari hated Hero even before. She just respected him because he was her boyfriend.
“If that’s true, this calls for a celebration! You’re free from that bastard.” Shari’s face beamed, “However, I’ve seen this situation before. Tomorrow, you’ll be back together, again.” Her eyes rolled.
“I will tell you everything, but you have to be calm. Promise?”
Shari’s one brow raised in doubt, “What? Come on, tell me.”
Einille got up and sat straight, “Hero told me that he is married, with two kids.”
Shari’s eyes blinked many times, thinking she had heard it wrong. But Einille confirmed it again, then her eyes widened.
“Holy fuck!” Shari stood up, unbelieving.
“You heard it right.”
“How thick his face is! He should start praying now because once we crossed paths, I would give him a twin bullet on his balls!” Her face red in rage.
“Shari, calm down! Do you think I’m not affected? Let me think with my proper logic.”
Shari deeply inhaled and exhaled, trying to calm herself. She sat back again.
Einille told her everything about what happened, and Shari carefully listened.
“What are your plans now?”
“None,” she simply shrugged, “I’ll face the consequences of being dumb. Probably I’ll let the situation cool down, we’re working in the government, and it’s not good to drag our names in this shame.”
“I think that’s the best decision for now. Soon, everything will be fine. I’m just worried about your health. Would this affect your work?” Shari looked at her with so much concern.
“Don’t worry. I can handle this.” She reassured her.
Shari moved and seated beside her. She stretched her arm and put it on her shoulder. They were sitting in silence.
Einille was thankful for her cousin’s presence. It was enough to make her feel all right despite the chaos in her mind.
“Forget him. Anyway, where these lovely roses came from?” She pointed out the vase.
“From Vale, he dropped by at the camp earlier.”
“Oh, from Valentino.” Shari paused, looking at her, “Why don’t you gave him a chance? He looked sincere, and not to mention, hot!”
She glared at her cousin, “No way! He’s not my type.”
Shari’s brow raised, “Excuse me? Are you blind? Vale is way hotter than Hero. He might not be as rich as your cheater, ex-boyfriend. At least he is single.” She knew Vale because that guy proudly introduced himself as her suitor when he visited the house before, along with few men serenading her. That was the night where Einille wanted to shrink in embarrassment.
Einille remained silent. Her cousin had a point, Vale was drop-dead gorgeous, so manly to look at because of his lean built and tall height. His tanned skin was perfect, too. And the way he carried himself showed self-assurance. But this would not change the fact that she didn’t like Vale. There were no spark and butterflies in her stomach.
“I don’t want to give a false hope to Vale,” she seriously said.
“I said give him a chance. You don’t know him. That’s why you’re saying he’s not your type. Besides, aren’t you planning to settle down next year? Vale is the perfect candidate. I mean, he’s stable and responsible.” Shari’s eyes beamed in excitement.
“I was in a rush to settle down, now look at what happened? I need to be extra cautious this time. Being single is also great.”
“You’re right,” Shari nodded, “Or maybe, you’re desperately looking out for a guy that you like, not the one you need. Want and need are two different things, and I guess Vale is the man that suits you best.”
“Don’t push your luck. I’m mending a broken heart. Getting in a new relationship spells disaster.” Einille stood up, “I’ll prepare our dinner.”
“I’ll help you.”
They went to the kitchen and prepared a sumptuous meal.
EINILLE filed a five-day mandatory leave to rest her mind. She planned to go hiking in the North to ease her sadness. She had to make herself busy and regain her normal life after what happened. She couldn’t sulk forever. She readied her things for her hiking adventure. And the only thing she was not prepared for was the coming of an unwanted visitor. Valentino, her overconfident suitor, came unannounced just now!“Hi! Oh, I see that you’re ready.” He flashed out his signature teasing smile. He was comfortably sitting on the sofa. Beside him was a sixty-liters black mountaineering bag, with a folded trekking pole on the side pocket.“What are you doing here?” She gaped at him. She just came out of her room with her hiking bag.“Oops, sorry. I let him in!” Shari shouted from the kitchen. She wore her uniform and appeared ready to go out for her duty.Shari even winked at her before leaving, “I&rs
THE two have met their tour guide for today’s activity, a young man who introduced himself as Greco.“The traverse would take six hours at a normal pace, and if slow, eight hours,” Greco explained. He also gave trivia about the place, and Einille was fascinated while she listened.Vale was quiet at her back, and his eyes traveled around the mountainous area“Ein, I suggest you leave your things here. I’ll bring your tumbler and other important things. You might find it hard carrying that much on your ascent.” Vale sounded worried. Her eyes rolled upward. This man was really belittling her! Although she didn’t train lately, she was sure her knees could take the load of her hiking bag. She had been taught like this before, and she didn’t see any reason to fail.“Why don’t you leave your bag to Rudy? If you think you can’t make it, just wait for me here. I’ll be quick.”
VALE smiled when he viewed the ecstatic face of Einille when they reached the endpoint of their traverse. She enjoyed their adventure for this day because she was so lively. Her happiness was genuine, and he was glad. He hoped that it would last long. “I can’t believe it! Next on our list is Mount Pulag.” Einille started to remove her trekking shoes that full of dirt “Ma’am, I suggest you dropped by at Mount Kalugong tomorrow. It’s like a park,” Rudy suggested when he started driving. “I agree. There’s an overlooking view of the city on top,” Vale said. He noticed the wondering face of Einille. Before they reached the endpoint, she asked him if his body was sore and pushed him to drink a pain reliever medicine. He just laughed at her. The mountain was so easy to scale. It was suitable for beginners. “Have you been at Mount Kalugong?” Einille asked. He gave her a slight nod as a reply. Then Einille agreed on Rudy’s suggestion to drop by
AFTER lunchtime, they immediately traveled to Bokod, where they had to register at the Department of Natural Resources. They didn’t find any hassle since Rudy was an expert driver. They asked him to wait for them there since the van might find it hard to go through the uphill route going to Camp One. They attended a seminar since it was mandatory before the climb. After that, they handed them the medical certificates and other requirements stating they were fit to climb. Several trails were going to the summit of Mount Pulag, but Vale chose the easiest. “We’ll trek to the Ambangeg trail. Since all these trails will only lead to one summit.” Vale said, explaining the pros and cons. “I want the challenging route. Let’s try the Akiki trail.” Einille said. The trail she mentioned would take three days to reach the summit. That was her original plan only if they didn’t drop by to the park earlier. “I’d like that, too. But I’m concerned about you, don’t for
“ADVANCE!” Einille screeched. Vale lost count of how much Einille yelled that word. They never stopped walking and passed by to the hikers in front of them, which they would give way for them to go through. While the elevation went high, the oxygen runs low. They had to make a breathing technique by deeply inhaling and exhaling through their mouth Vale could see that Einille was tired, but she never complained. She held bottled water, and they only stopped for a few minutes to refill from the water source. “Let’s have a five minutes rest. You’re tired,” he said while sipping to his hydration pack. Einille hardly shook her head, “I can do this. Let’s proceed.” They continued the trek, and they finally reached Camp Two. But Einille didn’t stop. She just followed the hikers to the front. She was dedicated to seeing the sunrise, which he perfectly understood since this was her first time scaling this mountain. He had been here many times a
THEY went back to Sorsogon after a week. They spent little time exploring the City of Baguio before going home. Einille suggested trying ghost hunting, but they couldn't do it due to her tight schedule. Besides, she was sure that Vale would be around anytime she needed him. Vale sent her home because he left his car there. And they could not miss the teasing stare of Shari. Her cousin was off-duty and waiting for them. Shari immediately asked her about their activities for the past week when Vale left. “It seemed the mountaineering adventure refreshes you. And surprisingly, you and Vale looked closer now. Is this a rebound relationship?” Shari tickled Einille’s waist. “We’re friends now. Don’t get me wrong, I never planned on getting into a new relationship. When the time is right, I will. I’m thankful to Valentino. I like his company. He is witty and funny, plus drop-dead gorgeous.” Einille did not conceal her smile while Shari rolled her eye
VALE moved fast, and he pulled his caliber .45 pistol and pointed it to Hero while he shielded his body in front of Einille. “If I were you, don’t try that.” Vale’s voice sounded dangerous. His usual playful expression was gone, only a stern face of an assassin. “Hey, easy! I’m just getting my car key.” Hero stepped backward. Perhaps he knew he was on the losing side, especially that Shari was only a few meters away from him with her gun in hand, pointing at him as well. “Einille says, get out! Don’t bother her again, or else you’ll have to deal with me.” Vale slowly puts his gun down. “I’ll go for now, but I’ll come back soon.” Hero strolled fast, going out of the house. They all breathed out in peace when they reached the roared of an engine going away. “Sorry about that.” Vale sharply exhaled. He lightly scratched his hair after he rested his gun to the holster behind him. Shari came closer to them. “I swear, I would h
EINILLE’S eyes traveled around when she reached the firing range. And somehow, she felt a disappointment because Vale was nowhere in sight. She held herself not to frown since she had expected him to be here earlier than her. “Hey, your neck might crack. Are you looking for someone?” Rab teased. He just came, wearing the black and red uniform of a Range Officer. “Excuse me? I’m just checking around the number of participants.” She rolled her eyes to conceal her embarrassment. “You say so. Vale won’t be around now because he had to run some errands. He sent a representative, though. Didn’t he tell you?” Einille shook her head, “He dropped by at home last night. He said he’ll be here.” “There must be an emergency. Although I’m surprised, Vale used to be your worst nemesis. Why a sudden change of heart?” Rab giggled. Einille got the notion that even she didn’t tell anything to Rab, this man knew what was going on between her and Vale.
PEOPLE were funnily arguing with whom to babysit the son of Vale and Einille. It was his first birthday, and his godparents wanted to play with him. They named him Viel.“Aw, my nephew is so cute!” Shari pinched Viel’s chubby cheeks. She was with Kyler, and they were officially engaged. Their love story was no joke, too. But her cousin beamed in joy now. They were getting married next month.“Guys, let’s take a picture!” Rab caught the attention of the photographer. He was being bullied for being single, but he just laughed at it.Einille quit her job. She chose to be a full-time mom to Viel. She helped her husband with his business. She would never bargain her happy family to the job she left behind.“Okay, let’s have a family picture!” Vale got the attention of their official photographers. He held Viel, and he snatched a kiss from her when the camera flashed.&ldqu
“THIS is all your fault, Hero! If you weren’t stupid because of that woman, we wouldn’t be in this mess!” said the man from the center.Everybody was ready to fire up, pointing the gun at each other. Einille was puzzled because Hero was at their side this time.Einille’s body was shaking involuntarily because of exhaustion. It was Hero whom she saw at her side the moment she opened her eyes after the ambush. She thought it was her end. But she found out that Hero was also the reason she was still alive until now.“It’s not my fucking fault! I never betrayed the organization.” Hero’s eyes glowed in anger.Einille felt the firm touch of Vale in her hand. She gave a furtive glance to her gun. She had not reloaded yet!The man from the center went berserk. He pulled the trigger aimed at Vale.Vale jumped on the side, and the bullet landed on his right thigh. He fired back, and t
THE test result just came in time. Other officials gathered inside the laboratory. Even Hero was just staring at her intently. He appeared flustered.“Is he positive either on Methamphetamine or Tetrahydrocannabinol?” General Blanco asked, referring to illegal drugs.Einille looked down and shook her head, “Negative, Sir.”The old man nodded. He immediately gave an order to bring Hero into the Regional Office.Einille arranged the documents, and the General gave her a separate order. “Join the security team. You need to personally present the test results.”“Yes, Sir!” she gave him a salute.“Carry on, be careful.”Einille rode the patrol car, following the vehicle where Hero was contained. The security was tight since Hero was considered a high profile. She was not bothered at all. She had been doing this before, only that she felt bored. She had a lot o
EINILLE had been crying for a while now. She couldn’t forget what just happened. Why she had to go through this? Or maybe she deserved this after all. She was so gullible and stupid. She suffered this kind of fate because she always prioritized her heart.“Hey, that’s enough. You will not accomplish anything if you continue sulking. Better if you talk with your husband, he’ll explain everything.” Shari caressed her back because she wouldn’t stop her sob.“He just used me. I hate him. I trusted him my life!”“You’re just blinded by your anger. You know Vale loves you. I can tell, just by looking the way she gazes on you.”“I doubt it. That was just part of his plan!”“Talk to him first before you make any decision. But did it ever cross in your mind that he violated the protocol of his mission when he marries you? If he is a high-ranking official of NIC
“TELL me what I need to know?” Einille asked Hero straightly. She just arrived at the restaurant where he instructed her to meet.Hero didn’t bother to answer her yet. He urged her to eat the food before he would explain everything.Einille didn’t press him. Hero casually ate his food while she never bothered to touch anything on the table. She was already fuming.“I’m just preparing you for all the things I need to spill. Toughen up. You really need it.” Hero drank the pineapple juice then slowly shake it as if arranging the ice cubes. She gritted her teeth, “I didn’t meet you here to exchange pleasantries. I still don’t forgive you for ruining my life.” She glared at him. The man still looked unbothered.“I know I caused you this mess. And I’m really sorry, I mean it. I don’t wish you to forgive me because I dragged you into a greater danger aside fr
THE next morning, Einille woke up with her husband’s hand wrapped around her from behind. She turned around to look at his handsome face while in his slumber. It had been a week since the day they got married. And she would not trade this happiness for anything in this world. She carefully got up. She was off-duty today, and she had a lot of time to make a good meal for her husband. Usually, he would cook for her. Vale spoiled her so much. And she didn’t want to get used to it. She wanted to serve him, too.Einille was in the midst of cooking fried rice when her cellphone rang. The number was unregistered. Her one brow raised because she knew who it might be. And she was right because she received a text message when she didn’t answer the call. This is Hero. I guess the honeymoon is over. You need to meet me because I have to tell you something about your husband. And the threats surrounding you.She didn’t r
VALE silently cursed. A black sedan had been tailing him from the restaurant where they ate. He didn’t mention it because Einille was somehow traumatized during the last shooting encounter. Whoever this bastard, the target was him not Einille. He alerted himself and snatched his gun from the compartment. He hastened the car, but the sedan caught up. He decided not to go straight home. He had to know the identity of his pursuer.Vale parked the car on the sidewalk. He assessed the situation and peered to the dashcam if someone would go out from the car behind. But it stayed at a safe distance from his location. He immediately called Rab and asked for a reinforcement. He waited a bit longer until he noticed the black sedan pulled over and left. Its driver must have had grasped that he called for an aid. Because after a few minutes, two patrol cars came and police big bike where Rab rode.“What happened?” Rab sounded worried.
VALE asked her to join in touring around the well-known tourist spots in Sorsogon. Einille was excited since she badly needed to unwind as well. Their relationship went fine so far. Vale gave her all the attention she needed even without asking for it.“Happy monthsary, Sweetheart!” Vale cheerfully greeted her when they reached the Laug Fish Sanctuary. He had food for the fish in his hand.“Monthsary? Are you serious?” she giggled. She never counted the day since they became an official couple because it was not a big deal for her.It had been a month indeed. But a monthly celebration was not her thing, except if anniversary.“This is an important day. Of course, I counted!”“Monthsary is for kids. It’s giving me bad omen that we wouldn’t reach an anniversary.”“Everything that has connections in our relationship is special.” His eyes traveled to a floating
“WITH that smile of yours, I knew something happened,” Shari said the following day while on their breakfast. She held a cigarette while drinking a black coffee, “Did you sleep with Vale last night?” she flashed a teasing smile.“No! Don’t give me that look.” She giggled.“I don’t believe you. Tell me, is Vale yummy? On a scale of one to ten, ten being the highest, where would you put him? How about the girth size?”Einille laughed, “You’re crazy. Nothing happened. And even if we did, I don’t kiss and tell.”“So, you’re keeping secrets from me.” Shari blew a cloud of smoke to her side.“I am just happy, and I deserve this, right?” she drank her tea, “How about you and Mazareno?”“We’re doing good!”“Good to hear that.”Einille told her cousin about Vale’s
