Something about the frat party tonight made me happy. Honestly, I didn’t know why I was so excited. Maybe this had to do with the fact that this was my first frat party. Either way, I wanted it to go well.
This was why I had gone to Galaxy’s closet for something fancy. I had gotten a red skimpy gown with a sweetheart neckline. Once again, I took YouTube tutorials for my makeup. Had no absolute idea of how to do that, without any help.
I also removed the bun from my red hair Whitney preyed upon, letting it fall. As l combed the dyed hair, my mind wandered to numerous things.
What if I looked weird tonight?
With my red hair, hopefully this turned out to be right.
“Breathe in, Phoebe. You’re going to be fine,” I told myself, as I highlighted the stairs, in a silver high heels I had brought from the confines of my little closet.
As I threaded the stairs, I could hear some low-key chattering from down stairs. I walked in the parlour, which was surprisingly dark. I reached for the light switch, turning on the light.
I gasped out immediately. It was my parents, both sitting on the sofa.
“Gosh! Mum, dad, you totally scared me!” I let out, with a hand on my chest in fright. Why didn’t they switch on the light like normal people did?
“Sorry about that, dear. Your dad and I were just having some important conversation.” Mum said, with a smile.
“You look beautiful, dear.” Dad called out. He approached me, with a hand on my cheek.
“Thanks, dad.” I replied him.
“My little girl is now all grown up now.” Mum said, with a little kiss on my forehead. The moment they both sat on the chair, I began to head outside.
“Be home safe, there’s something important we’d like to talk to you about,” Mum stated, with a warm expression on her features. She tucked her raven hair, slowly behind her ears, before gently patting my shoulders
“I’ll get going now, then.” I said to them both. I pecked mum’s cheeks.
“Bye mum, bye dad,” I said, doing the same to dad before walking out the door.
“Don’t stay out too late!” Dad called out, saying. I gave a thumbs up, before closing the door behind me. As I threaded the concrete floor outside, my mind drifted to multiple things, once more.
My hair.
My dress.
Asher, and lastly, my parents.
What did they have to tell me?
…
Cole was already waiting just opposite my house. This was because he was trying to be careful. The last time he packed next to my house, a group of toddlers, accidentally hit his car’s glass.
That cost a huge damage he had to pay for, without his parents knowing. I remembered emptying my piggy bank so he didn’t get in trouble.
“Hey,” I said, as I entered his old rickety car.
“Hey, best friend,” he said, before driving off.
We got to the frat house few moments later. It was all thanks to Cole we didn’t have to be on a look out. Lilith was also coming with a friend, so she shared him a g****e map.
Just as we stepped out, a cold breeze wheezed past my face. I tucked a hair behind my ears as my stilettos clicked the floor.
“Thanks for tonight,” I said, in reference to the outfit he had suggested I wore in a video call, we previously had earlier.
“You’re welcome.”
“How do I look? Tell me Roxanne wouldn’t be able to take her eyes off me tonight.” he said.
“Cocky much?” I retorted, with an eye roll.
“Not fair…” he trailed out.
“At least tell me how I look.” he said.
“Perfect, Cole. You look perfect.” I muttered, before we entered the house.
…
“Ready?” Cole called out, with a hand stretched out. I slowly smiled at him, taking his hand. No Candle No Light by Zayn Malik boomed the frat house. Teenagers were all around, getting wasted.
Games were being played, lovers made out, stunts were also being performed and jeered upon.
We walked together, till we were in the heart of the party, right in the midst of everyone.
There was something me and Cole had in common.
Dancing.
We have always loved dancing right from when we were little. And, we weren’t in any way, ashamed to dance. Thus, we moved together on the dance floor.
He did numerous spins with his feet while I wiggled my waist, swaying them in support. We didn’t stop until we were the ones leading the whole dance floor.
Singing along to the song, we all moved our body to the tune of the music. And, just as I did dance, the disco ball reflected on a particular part of the house.
My eyes caught a gaze of Asher. It was something so swift, as I did spin. He was at a darkened corner of the frat house, with some of his male friends around. Just from where they stood, curls of smoke whooshed past the air.
Goose pimples formed on my skin, which left me breathless that instant. I paused right on my spot, wondering what was with that look. While everybody danced, a throbbing headache hit my forehead.
“Phoebe, common!” Cole called me out of my daze. That made me recover that instant. I knew what he indeed meant. The DJ had played our favourite song and our most favourite part was soon approaching.
I instantly moved a shoulder stylishly, then the other. Suddenly, Whitney showed up in the dancing floor with her minions. They flaunted some dance moves which immediately got jeers from the crowd.
Just at the end of their supposed move, they gave us a green light that they wanted a dance battle.
“Is she really challenging us to one of our most loved song?” Cole whispered to me.
“Let’s show her who rocks this song better,” I answered him, with a mischievous smirk.
The frat house kids immediately spread out, to give us some space. They all cheered loudly at the moves the Queen bee had just given, with her minions.
The DJ switched the music to our favourites of all time, this time around. It was Money by Leikeli47. Cole gave me a supportive glance, as we brazened up to do the moves, we had rehearsed practically everyday at the fun house.
We started with a robotic dance. It was a similar one we had imitated from Tiktok dance challenges. After a brief moment, Cole switched with some good stunts he was good at. I did a few reverse spins before ending it with a split.
The whole lot of teens around cheered louder at us. It was so obvious that we did win the challenge. Whitney folded her hands, with a snarl on her face, before walking away angrily with her minions.
A smile carved on my lips that minute.
Someone corked a wine. It dripped down appealingly. This drew the attention of others too. Thus, more wine corks were heard. People jeered and slowly, my eyes caught the face of the initial person who uncorked the wine.
It was Roxanne.
She looked so alive and pretty, in her ever-glowing natural brown skin. Her curly hair was plaited with some delicate strands, just made a unique fringe on her forehead. She was clothed in an off-shoulder vintage dress, with side slits.
“Honestly, you two killed it! That dance was a hit,” she told both of us on spot.
“We did?” I said.
“Never would have thought we’d ever do that.” Cole stated, with a funny look on his face.
“Off course you did, you left the Queen bee herself so furious.” she whispered to us.
“Come along now, you too.” she said, dragging out hands along.
“Urr… where are we going?” I asked.
“Don’t tell me this is a kidnap plan. You’re never going to succeed cause I’m good at escaping,” My best friend weirdly let out. She giggled at his words, instantly.
“Jeez, no one’s kidnapping anyone. This is obviously a party, guys. Let’s go have some fun!” she answered sunnily. We both followed her. Although, I felt a little uncomfortable, especially after that cold glare from Asher, but I didn’t want Cole to feel disappointed.
He obviously wanted to hang out with the girl he liked. Thus, I certainly didn’t want to spoil that for him.
Roxanne pulled us to a shot table. It was a game in which golf balls were thrown into a cup at a minimal distance.
“Nahh, I don’t drink.” I objected, the instant it was my turn.
“Well, there is a first for everything.” Roxanne commented.
“Drink it, drink it, drink it! Drink it…” The chants went on by the teens around that instant. Yet I was still reluctant. Cole nudged me for a brief second.
“Common, Phoebe.” he said.
“Maybe this is our chance to become famous.” he whispered. I inhaled, with a tight expression on my features. My hands shakily reached for the red plastic cup.
“Okay, here we go.” I muttered. I poured the entire contents in my throat that minute. My face wore a frown at the taste of it. They began jeering again, as we carried on with the game.
As the game did went on, more and more shots were drunk. I threw some balls, so did Cole and Roxanne did too. In a way, this was fun. I certainly wasn’t going to lie to myself about that.
A sense of déjà vu instantly hit the moment my head began to feel light. Suddenly, everything begun to blur. I slapped my cheeks a bit to bring me to reality. Cole and Roxanne’s face came into picture that minute.
“C-COMM-OOONN…LET’SSS GGOO SKKINNY DIIPPINGG!” A voice exclaimed. Cole pulled my hand, dragging me along, with Roxanne. My best friend settled me on a nearby chair.
“Stay here, Phoebe… I promise I won’t be gone for long.” he said. He knew I certainly couldn’t swim that’s why he was being cautious. I sulked, sitting down with a frown on my face.
A whole lot of teens dived in the water. I pouted at the swimming pool, knowing they were having a lot of fun.
“Not fair…not fair…” I grumbled to myself. My hands reached for my clothes that instant. I untangled the rope, unsure of what I was doing. Whatever was in that drink, sure made me unable to control myself.
I mean, what was I even doing?
I stood up, totally ripping away the cloth from my body. I shoved it at a side, walking towards the pool. My legs dragged on the slippery floor, as I did move.
What are you doing, Phoebe?
My sub consciousness told me.
You sure can’t swim.
“I want to have fun too,” I replied, talking to myself. Just as I reached the edge of the pool, I slapped my cheeks hard, with an urge to focus. That brought me to a realization that I was putting my life on a risk.
Nice, Phoebe.
I thought, taking a step back. Just as I moved to take another step, someone ran hurriedly past me, hitting my shoulders.
“AHH!!” I screamed instantly, as I went off balance. My entire body landed in the water immediately. As I sank in, my eyes were wide open. Everything around me was blue and that brought me to a conclusion.
I was in a pool.
And, I couldn’t swim.
It only meant one thing.
“I-a-m d-r-o-w-n-i-n-g—" I attempted to say but couldn’t as the water filled my entire mouth. My legs and hands fought to try to swim, but still nothing. No matter how much I tried, nothing was working.
I pushed more, unable to breathe. Suddenly, a wave of dizziness hit my body. It slowly begun to feel like I was passing out. A hand encamped around my waist. I felt it lift me to the surface.
The next thing I felt was a hand on my chest. A familiar lip came in contact with mine. I choked out some water, opening my eyes. Hordes of faces were all around. I gasped in terror when a hand lifted me.
I was placed on a broad shoulder. Still feeling dizzy, I didn’t even know who it was that was carrying me. Whoever it was, why was he carrying me like bag of grain?
My hands wiggled helplessly, landing on a hard surface. My eyes bolted at the realization that I was upside down to some shapely male lower part, just at the back.
“That’s a nice butt down there.”
Last words, I remembered saying before passing out.
The instant I opened my eyes, the first thing I laid my eyes on, were vintage walls. The whole place was designed with dull colours. Despite that, it was still stunning. Writhing my brows, I wondered where I was. With eyes searching around the room, I slowly scanned the room. There was a shelf and a mini bar, directly ahead of me.Just as I stood up, a throbbing pain hit my forehead.Slowly, last night’s events imprinted on my brain. I immediately gasped at the whole lot of things I had done.“Oh no,” I muttered, with a cringy voice. Rubbing my forehead at the headache that occupied me, I stood up slowly. I sighted my bare legs, re-tracing it all the way to my knee.I was clothed in a saggy shirt that wasn’t even mine. My hands clenched around my chest in protectiveness. What was happening here?Whose clothes was I putting on and, where the heck was I?Just like a response to my question, a door s
As I walked around the frat house, I crossed over empty red plastic cups. There were numerous shattered bottles everywhere. Creeping around some corners too, were lots of empty bottles rolling out. The whole place was disarranged.Only a few volunteers were trying to organize the place. It was obvious that they were probably part of the frat team. My legs desperately looked for the exit, with an intent to get out of here. I hissed at the cat whistles from the upper part of the house.“Boys would be boys,” I snickered out, rolling my eyes. A hand suddenly encamped around my shoulders. I looked behind, shaking abruptly, with a fright.“Hey, Phoebe” The voice called out. I narrowed my eyes at who it was. He looked somewhat familiar. I couldn’t help but become quite inquisitive at the moment.“Yeah…hey,” I muttered, in an unsure tone.“Are you perhaps lost? You’ve been lurking a
Surprises.Life for me just had to be always filled with them.I was an early bloomer. Thus, I didn’t even know what happened when a blood dripped from my chair, in the middle of class. Not until I heard the mocking laughter of the boys in class. It all made me feel so ashamed. In fact, I wished the ground would open up and swallow me, that second.I mean, nobody even told me about that. It just happened out of the blue, without any form of warning. That was a surprise.Something that was uncalled for.Mum and dad just did this. And, I hated that they did.“How is he my brother?” I asked them, with a shaky voice. Guilt was written on both of their faces. My mind lingered to the reason they hadn’t told me of all this.Didn’t they think I deserved to know?“I-I thought I was the only child,” I choked out, with my eyes searching theirs. I desperately look
“Now, that’s a plus.” Cole gave me a startled look, commenting. It was pretty obvious that he was surprised. He wasn’t the only one. I was too. Mum had just said it out of the blue. And, Asher didn’t just drop by any day to see me?Why in the name of heavens would he show up here to solely see me?“Would be right back,” I muttered, before walking out the door.My legs scurried towards the stairs, going down. It creaked from its oldness. Although, it was still polished and exquisite just like it had been, ten years ago.The only difference was that it wasn’t the design in trend now.I moved towards the sitting room, knowing that was where we entertained visitors. And to my actual surprise, mum was correct. He really had shown up.But was it really to see me?Asher looked ripped as always, his numerous piercings everywhere and clothes that hugg
All my life, I had always wished I wasn’t the only child. Since when I was a little child, I always craved some company. This was why I felt delighted when Galaxy showed up, one day. Although, sadness had occupied me, knowing she lost people dear to her. But her company made me feel alive. Like I now had a friend. But one day, she went to school. The similar loneliness came back occupying me, all over again. Cole’s was different though. He was a friend that meant the world to me. That certainly didn’t mean he’d always be there. On my six-year-old birthday, I had wished to have another sibling. Infact, I did this every single year. I now did understand why mum and dad didn’t push to have another kid like I expected. I had a brother I never even knew of. Diego Leonard Davis. This form of happiness was in a way, different, because we were bound by blood this time. “Common Phoebe!” he
I knew I sucked at sports. Not that I’ve had a fair chance in partaking but the few times I did try, I screwedBut it didn’t mean I didn’t put my best in sports today. I tried everything in my power in the ball practice.“Common, Phoebe!” My name was yelled numerous times.I made effortless moves going for the ball. But it was all futile.Once more, a burning sensation coursed through my body. I had a sickly feeling. And the blue sleeveless I wore still made me heated up for some reason.I paused, with a hand around my throat.I felt the sudden urge to puke. And irritation at my environment.A hand touched me from behind. I looked through the corner of my eye, only to notice Cole’s crush. She had a worried expression on her features.“What happened?” Roxanne asked me.“I-I think need a break…I’m not feeling too well…” I t
Asher’s PovMost guys in school were intimidated by me.On field, in the area of girls swooning over me. They made every little thing they did seem like a competition. Gregory, Henry and the rest.Except from one though, Jacob.“Yo man,” one of them let out, as we practiced on the field. I remember seeing him around that girl that bullied Phoebe, Whitney. It seemed like he liked her.But she gave the impression to like me.“Yo…” I trailed out, giving him a handshake. I grabbed his frail hands in my large ones. While I was different from most of them was my built and muscled body. And what lied in between, couldn’t compare to most of them.I had a year to graduate, thus, wasn’t too old.I was just blessed with this body.“Care to do a few laps? You seem very competitive,” he sni
Asher’s Pov It appeared that Phoebe was nowhere to be found, after I looked around so much. Why are you doing this, Asher? Don’t care about another female once more. You know what they always do. “Shut up, dammit,” I told myself. These little voices in my head kept creeping along, every single now and then. It reminded me of my horrid past. That box I locked it all in, refusing to never open it or dive in. “Phoebe!” I yelled. “Hey Phoebe!!” I tried again, still nothing. A few cheer leading girls heading to the field, gave me seductive glances. I sighed off, overlooking them. Shameful sluts. I only protected Phoebe because she was a family friend. It was not because dad instructed me to do so. I couldn’t protect her every time. I wasn’t always there too. Only a few times could I do that. These were what I thought as
She must have already had it all figured out. I kissed her. I was so in love with her. "It's perfect. You're perfect and I love you, Phoebe. My own personal Maserati.” I said, kissing her again. "I love you too, Asher." she said smiling at me. “I’m not yours, though.” I smirked. “Maybe… but she’s mine. My personal Jaguar.” She laughed at my words, to our new born. I had just given her a nickname to a car, within minutes of holding her. Couldn’t wait to be a father to her. So pretty… so soft. .... ~Three years later~ Phoebe's POV I stand in front of the mirror as I stare at the stunning knee length grey dress I was putting on for my matriculation. I finally did get into NYU and I was gonna be majoring in English literature. A year ago, Asher had graduated with a degree in Entrepreneurship and project management from the West Carolina University. In all, we had all moved over to New York so that I could pursue my degree in the university of my dream; New York University. Av
Asher's POVOnce again going by the way I knew him, I knew his mind was already made up.He was going to make me think he was going to let Phoebe go, then he was going to kill her after I had agreed to do his job, and then kill me when I was done.Because Miller left no trails behind whatsoever to any crimes he committed. He was a well known drug lord. Feared and revered by many.Had many connections even with the cops and so for them to continue to keep him fucking clean, he didn't need any tags.Which was why I came with a plan. "No," I said. "How is it going to be like Miller? I always take the upper hand."Miller and Jacob stare at me and then I yell."NOW!"A bullet flies straight into Miller's forehead and his shocked body stood for three seconds, before slumping to the floor and everything happens fucking fast. I lung after Jacob and engaged him in a combat."I'm going to get Phoebe!"Diego said as he leaves his hiding place holding a shot gun in his hand.Jacob was mine. The
Phoebe's POVI stirred and felt a sharp pain on my tummy.Ouch! That hurt.I look around me and realized that I'm in a strange room. The only things in the room were a bunch of wrapped ropes at the corner and a spade.I felt pressed.Where was I?I looked around. Flashes of the last things that happened before I blacked out resurfaced and played in my mind's eye.Shit. My eyes started welling in tears.Asher was right all along. Jacob indeed was dangerous. I searched around me but couldn't find my phone. They had taken it. Even my baggage was no where in sight. What am I gonna do? I asked myself as I looked around the room. I really needed to pee and the strange pain in my tummy was getting intense. Why was my stomach hurting?I managed to get up from the floor I had been lying on and get to the door. I tried the handle and found out that it was locked so I hit the door hard with my palm. The door clicked and a muscular bald headed huge white guy that wore military pants came in."W
Phoebe’s POV It was 10:46pm and Asher hadn't returned nor called me or even texted. Cole had texted that they had gotten to their hotel room about two hours ago and had asked if I wanted anything which I had declined. The more I waited the more I kept imagining what Asher was doing with that girl. Coraline or Cordelia whatever her name was. I was startled by the sound of opening and closing of our hotel door. It was Asher. He stood looking at me for some minutes. I kept silent. "What you did was immature Phoebe." he seethed. "That was a low blow." Who the fuck was he telling that? "Now you're talking to me about immaturity and low blows?" I asked him. "You weren't supposed to insult her like that and shit." I laughed unbelievably. "Whew!” I let out. “I can't believe you're saying this to me." I said. "There was absolutely nothing to get angry over." Asher went on and I just kept watching him like I was seeing him for the first time. "So I was gonna sit there and watch
Phoebe’s POV "Hangout for what exactly?" I asked him looking at him. "You know," Dave said, "Have drinks, play games, have lots of fun." He exaggerated the fun. At that, I could see that red light blare in my head. No one had to tell me that. "Define fun in your language." Roxanne said. "Like getting to know each other..." He trailed opening his arms. That infuriated me. "I'm fucking pregnant!" I said loudly. A few heads turned. "Uh-oh." Roxanne said. "Wasn't that hint enough?" I asked as he looked at me startled. "I have a boyfriend and so does she." I said to them. "Alright, alright." Dave said as they both retreated still facing us and raising their hands plicately. Good. Did I overreact? Then they turned and left. I looked at my friend and there was this… Roxanne burst into a serious feat of laughter and I'm forced to join her as I couldn't help myself. Yeah, that was it… "Did you see the look on their faces when you yelled?" she asked still cracking up. "I kno
Asher’s POV"Woo-hoo!" Cole yelled as we exited the airport hours later in San Juan. "Let's get this party started." he said and Phoebe and Roxanne laugh. I smile, shaking my head.We all boarded a taxi that took us to the hotel we were gonna be staying at for the vacation.Phoebe, Cole and Cole's girl, Roxanne kept chattering on and on about the places they'd like to visit while here on vacation and all that. They looked eager and please to be here, especially Phoebe. She needed the break. I was eager too. This was going to serve as some form of relaxation and get together for both of us and I was glad we took it.We arrive at the hotel and I'm amused at how they're all amazed at the place. Cole's a pussy by the way. "Hi, I'm here to book a double suite." I say to the receptionist as we entered luggages in hands and stuff."Alright, let me check if there are any reservations." she said, while clicking away at her keyboard. "I'm sorry, there aren't any double suites left. They're all
Phoebe's POV"Everything all set?" Asher asked me as he entered our bedroom."Yep." I said as I finished zipping up our mini luggage.I was wearing big grey denim jeans with one of Asher's big sky blue tees. My long hair was packed in a ponytail and I put my sunglasses on my head. Asher wore dark skinny jeans and a plain black tee shirt with booths. We were both ready for the vacation.I had packed a few clothes and most of our toiletries alongside a few other stuffs. We were going to be meeting Cole and Roxanne at the airport to San Juan island. We all decided that that'd be a perfect place to visit and stay for our vacation."Passports and stuff all ready."I said to Asher coming out and stuffing our passports and few documents into my hand bag. Asher took the luggages to the trunk of the Uber we had ordered. We figured it'll be better we ordered a ride to take us to the airport rather than leaving our car at the airport. We boarded the car and drove off after I had ensured that we
"Hey." he whispered, when he got to us. "Hi." I said, continuing to smile as he kissed me softly on the lips. "So this is where you've been all day?" I asked him beaming. He shrugged and looked me over. "This dress suits you perfectly." He said admiring it as his fingers swirled the loose strands of my hair playfully. I laughed at twirled sweetly for him to get a better look of the dress and his smile broadened. "So, tell me why you made 'post prom'. And how much money you have to make you organize this.” I told him as he grabbed a drink for us from a passing waiter who had a tray filled with drinks. "We didn't get to attend prom and I saw you needed it so bad," he shrugged as we both stared at the party in front of us. "So I had to do it to make you feel better." "But you said it wasn't important." I laughed grateful he did it anyway. "I did, that didn't make that true." He said smiling at me playfully as he took a large drink of his drink. "Now can you quit your questions an
Phoebe's POVIt's mid February and today Cole called me.Last night was prom and he said it was exquisite. The decorations were top notch and he got to dance at prom with Roxanne. Cole had told me that Whitney had won prom queen. I had rolled my eyes at that. Like she had any competition. He said some other dude won prom king. While Cole and I spoke, I had my legs in a bucket of ice.My feet were getting swollen a lot these days.Asher usually massaged them for me but he wasn't home now. He'd been out since morning. And I couldn't go to work today because I wasn't feeling so strong and Veronica had agreed that I could stay at home for today. My pregnancy leave was beginning this weekend and she and Mia had assured me that they'd both take care of things till I returned. It's kind of funny how they both made me a part of their small family.Mia was like the sister I never had and Veronica made me feel safe. Like I had two mums.Speaking of mums.My mum and I have been speaking too. She
