“Mr. Craft will be with you shortly.” The woman sitting at my former desk batted her eyelashes. Ms. Carmicheal was peppy and perky, having more grit than the last assistant, Ms. Biggle.

She wouldn’t last more than a month.

I took a seat across from her desk, giving her a smile, doing my best for it to not appear full of pity. No doubt Mack had already given her an earful about her casual attire and coffee skills.

Setting down two to-go trays from Mack’s favorite restaurant, I smoothed over my new dress and crossed my legs. I bought stilettos a few weeks ago and hadn’t worn them because of the snow until now. They gave me a couple more inches than normal. The suede fabric was a fire engine red, matching my lipstick. Mack loved it when I wore the bold color.

The stench of Au Hi Tuna and Sriracha seeped through the bottom of the takeout container, a smell I was used to. By the contorted face of Mack’s latest assistant, he hadn’t instructed her to order him one yet.
