Chapter Thirty-Three

Mindy was buzzing the whole taxi ride into the city, thrilled to be back in the big city she called home. “I’m not saying Chicago is better than Cleveland, but there’s something livelier about these streets.”

“Couldn’t be the bums,” I said quietly as we passed by a shelter.

She waved me off. “Not here, I’m talking about deep into the city, you know, where Oprah is.”

How could I forget? Mindy grew up in a penthouse on the North side of the City. She didn’t know what poverty was when she was growing up. In her eyes, Cleveland was no comparison. 

I didn’t grow up in a big city, but a small suburb. It wasn’t city life by any means, but we also didn’t need to drive miles to get to a grocery store.

Eventually we were driving along the lakeshore, the high as clouds buildings stacked next to one another, fancy people with their designer outfits and extravagant hand
