Kiss of proof

I stared at Xavier, who was staring back at me in confusion. How did I end up here? Just a few minutes ago, I was in my room, trying to catch some sleep. My mind had been restless all day, thinking about what my best friend had done to me. She had left without warning, abandoning me with no explanation and almost getting me killed by some wicked strangers.

As I lay on my bed, trying to calm my racing thoughts, I heard a knock at the door. I got up to answer it, and that's when I saw Wendy standing in the hallway with a mischievous smirk on her face.

"To what do I owe this sudden visit?" I asked, doing my best to hide the frown tugging at my lips.

"I should be the one asking you that," she shot back, her left eyebrow raised mischievously. "Shouldn't you be in your husband's room, sleeping beside him?"

I bristled. "We decided not to sleep together until our wedding, which is coming up soon."

"Oh, so you two are practicing celibacy?" Wendy laughed, shaking her head.

I nodded, trying to sound convincing. "Yeah, I guess."

"Oh please," she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Spare me the nonsense. You two don’t even act like real lovers. Are you even getting married?"

A surge of irritation flared inside me.

"Yes, we are getting married," I said, my voice firm. "And I think you should leave now. I need to get some rest."

She sneered, her gaze scanning me from head to toe. "Why don’t you prove it then? Prove that you and Xavier are really getting married, and it’s not just one of his tricks."

"What do you mean by 'tricks'?" I asked, taken aback, my frown deepening.

"The last girl we brought, he said he was going to marry her, but what happened?" she laughed, shaking her head. "You're not the first one, and you won't be the last."

I glared at Wendy, nodding my head with such confidence.

"Fine," I said, huskily. "You want proof? I'll prove it. I'll stay with him in the same bedroom tonight, and you'll see that we aren't only truly getting married but genuinely in love with each other."

Wendy’s lips twisted into a crooked smile, a frown quickly forming on her face. I could see the disbelief and irritation in her expression.

I turned and walked away, with her following closely behind. I stopped and turned to face her. "What are you doing?"

Wendy's grin grew wider.

"I want to see you enter the room. I want to hear everything you and Xavier have to discuss. Besides," she said, taking a step closer to me, "I'll be the one staying in your bedroom tonight. Maybe then you and your lovely Xavier can continue your celibacy after tomorrow."

I felt a surge of annoyance, but I said nothing. I turned and continued walking, my mind racing with thoughts of Xavier's past. What Wendy had said echoed in my mind: "The last girl we brought, he said he was going to marry her, but what happened?"

I couldn't shake off the feeling that I might not be the only woman in Xavier's life. Was he a ladies' man? A Casanova? A playboy? The doubts swirled in my mind.

She stopped me before I could go further. "That's my brother's bedroom," she said, pointing to a huge, beautifully carved wooden door.

My eyes widened as I took in the intricate details on the door.

I breathed deeply, hesitating for a moment before knocking on the door.

And now here I am, standing before Xavier, who stared at me with a confusing mixture of emotions.

I took a few steps back, my eyes locking with his, but I couldn’t hold the gaze and quickly looked down. My back hit the door just as I saw his feet moving closer. Xavier closed the distance, his face now inches from mine.

I swallowed hard, my heart racing in my chest and then slowly took my gaze up to stare at him right back.

Xavier's eyes seemed unwavering, and I wondered how he could meet my gaze without flinching. He placed his hand against the door, trapping me, and I caught the scent of cigarette smoke on his breath.

"What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice low and husky.

I swallowed again, my voice barely above a whisper. "I...I just want us to act normal, okay? Wendy is outside, and she wants me to prove—"

Xavier's eyes sparkled with amusement, interrupting me immediately. "Prove that we're really getting married?"

I nodded quickly, feeling a flush rise to my cheeks. He chuckled, the rich deep sound sending shivers down my spine.

"Wendy is at it again," he said, his voice laced with humor. "This is how she normally catches whoever is my fake fiancée. I'm not the type to share beds with… women in my place."

He added with a smirk on his handsome face. "Guess you'll be getting caught today."

"So, what's going to happen to me now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "Am I going to be chased out? I don't have anywhere to go…"

As I stood there, I couldn't help but think about where I would go if I was chased out. I had no money, no one to turn to. My ex-husband had betrayed me, my step-sister had betrayed me, and even my friend Naomi had betrayed me. I felt utterly alone and vulnerable.

The thought of leaving sent a wave of panic through me. I wasn't even stable yet. I needed time to gather my thoughts, to save some money, and to get my life together. But now, I was battered and shattered, my emotions raw and exposed.

How could I possibly start over when I was still reeling from the past? The uncertainty was suffocating, and I felt like I was drowning in my own fears.

Xavier's expression softened, and he shook his head. "Don't worry, I won't let you be chased out, especially when you have a little me in your womb."

As he said this, his hand instinctively went to my stomach, but he hesitated, and I felt a flutter in my chest. That was when I realized that this baby in my womb could be his weakness.

I shouldn't play with you, little one! I thought.

Xavier's eyes locked onto mine, and he pulled me into a tight hug, his hands wrapped around me. "I'm going to kiss you hard now," he whispered, his breath sending shivers down my spine. "And I want you to try to make some, you know, loud sounds while we kiss."

I felt a surge of confusion. "What? Why?"

Xavier's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Because I know Wendy is still listening from behind the door. We need to make this convincing."

Before I could respond, Xavier's lips crashed against mine, his tongue sweeping in between my lips, taking hold of my mouth. The kiss was intense, passionate, and utterly overwhelming. I felt my lips parting, allowing him deeper access, as our tongues tangled together.

I could taste the mixture of sweet red wine and hints of cigarettes, but I was too deeply in not to break the kiss despite being a hater for cigarettes taste and smell.

As we kissed, the sounds of our lips meeting and parting filled the air - soft smacks, gentle suction, and husky breaths. My moans were muffled by Xavier's mouth, but I couldn't help the soft whimpers that escaped.

Xavier's hands roamed my body, pulling me closer, as our kiss deepened. I felt his chest pressing against mine, his heart pounding in rhythm with my own. The sounds of our kiss grew louder, more urgent, as if we were trying to devour each other.

Suddenly, he pulled back, his lips inches from mine. "I guess that is convincing enough?" he whispered.

I nodded, still breathless, as Xavier's lips curled into a sly smile.
