The scent of blood drowns the air. It’s everywhere—seeping into the dirt, painting the broken bodies strewn across the ground, soaking into Rose’s torn dress. The metallic tang clings to her skin, mixing with the bitter taste of fear that sits heavy on her tongue.

Her heart hammers in her chest, but it’s the pounding in her ears that drowns out everything else—the shouts, the screams, the sickening crunch of bones breaking under the force of violence.

She’s eight years old. Too young for this, too innocent for this madness. But no one seems to care.

Her father kneels before the beast who destroyed their world. Alderon Kane. The Alpha of Mooncrest. The monster who came without warning and left nothing but carnage in his wake. His men have already taken everything—her home, her pack, her people. And now… her father. Her protector.

Rose watches as the blade presses against her father’s throat. The cold steel gleams in the moonlight, but it’s the terror in her father’s eyes that freezes her in place. He’s trying to hold on, trying to shield her from the horror, but his strength is fading. His body shakes, a broken man, and his eyes flicker to her—pleading.

She tries to move, to run, but hands hold her down. Strong, unyielding hands. They pin her to the ground, forcing her to watch, forcing her to understand the reality of the nightmare unfolding before her.

“Please,” Rose chokes out. The word is weak, fragile, nothing more than a whisper in the wind. Her tiny voice is nothing. Her pain is nothing. This was no scene for a child to witness, but Alderon Kane doesn’t seem to care.

He smiles, that twisted, sadistic smile that chills her to the core. And then, without hesitation, he slits her father’s throat.

The blood splatters across the dirt, warm and thick. Her father’s body crumples in a heap, eyes still open, staring at nothing. His life drains away in front of her, the very thing that had kept her safe now taken from her in an instant.

Rose screams, her voice raw and broken, but the sound is lost in the chaos of the night. It’s drowned by the wail of her sister, the one person she still has left. The sound is raw, terrified, ruined, a noise that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

And Kane? He just watches. His amusement is evident, a cruel, twisted pleasure in the pain he’s inflicted.

Rose doesn’t understand it. How could he be this heartless? This savage?

But before she can process the horror any further, his hand is on her throat. Iron fingers dig into her skin, and within seconds, she’s lifted off the ground with a force that takes her breath away. She kicks, she thrashes, she bites, she fights like an animal—but it’s futile. He’s stronger. So much stronger.

His eyes gleam with something worse than cruelty, something darker, more dangerous. He drags her forward, his grip never loosening, and in that moment, Rose realizes just how powerless she is.

"That one is mine." His voice is filled with twisted amusement, but his eyes are cold, void of any remorse. His gaze tells her that she no longer has a choice in her fate. She is his to claim.

Everything inside her screams to fight. To escape. But she’s powerless. Trapped. And as if reading her thoughts, Alderon throws her into his car’s boot, slamming the door with brutal force. The world tilts around her as she is tossed into the darkness, the scent of her father’s blood still fresh in the air, mingling with the faint smell of her sister’s terror.

The last thing she sees, before the door slams shut, is her sister—broken, crumpled on the ground, unable to move. The last thing she hears is Kane’s laughter, cruel and ringing in the night as his men continue their work. The assault on her sister. The sound of her innocence being ripped away.

Rose doesn’t cry.

She doesn’t break.

But as the car speeds off into the blackness of the night, as the weight of everything she’s lost settles like a leaden blanket on her chest, she carves a promise into her soul. A promise that will never fade, no matter how many years pass.

One day, she will make him bleed.

ROSE POV The full moon hung low, a cold silver eye watching over Mooncrest, its light slicing through the canopy like a blade. Every step I took was calculated, measured. My heart beat in my chest like a war drum, its rhythm echoing in my ears as I moved through the shadows, careful not to disturb the dead leaves beneath my feet. The forest surrounding Mooncrest Pack had been my cage for ten long years, but tonight—tonight, I was going to escape. I had memorized the layout of Mooncrest Park like the back of my hand—where the guards patrolled, the gaps in their watch, the dead zones where I could slip by unnoticed. My body was a whisper of motion, my breaths shallow as I slithered through the underbrush, the cold air biting my skin. The walls of Mooncrest were miles behind me now, but the chill in my bones told me that I wasn’t out of danger yet. A twig snapped. I froze. My senses went on high alert, my wolf immediately alerting me to the danger. I could feel it, that prese

The darkness is heavy, suffocating. It presses in from all sides, dragging me under, pulling me deeper. I can’t move, can’t breathe. It’s as if the weight of the world is crushing me, pressing down on my chest until I feel like I might shatter. Then, the pain comes. A sharp, searing ache that pulses through every inch of my body. My limbs feel like lead, my head throbbing with every weak beat of my heart. I try to move, to claw my way out of the abyss, but my body refuses to obey. Somewhere in the distance, a voice calls my name. Low. Rough. Familiar. I don’t want it to be familiar. The darkness begins to crack. Light seeps through the fractures, burning at the edges of my vision. The pain sharpens, dragging me further into consciousness. I blink. Once. Twice. The world comes into focus in slow, aching increments. A fire flickers somewhere nearby, casting a dim glow over rough stone walls. The air is thick with the scent of pine, smoke, and something darker. Something that ma

I glare at my reflection in the full-length mirror, barely able to recognize the woman staring back at me. My bruises are hidden beneath layers of makeup, my skin polished to perfection, but I know the truth. The pain, the torment, the loss—it’s all still there, lurking beneath the surface. No amount of powder or fine silk can erase what has been done to me.The gown is white, elegant, flowing like a river of moonlight around me. But to me, it is nothing more than a funeral shroud. My funeral. The older woman, Esther, tightens the bodice while Abigail watches with teary eyes. "I wish there was something we could do to get you out of here" she whispers, her voice breaking.I meet her gaze through the mirror, my own eyes hollow. "He has my sister," I remind her, forcing the words past the lump in my throat. The scent of alcohol lingers in the air. Laughter and music echo through the grand hall, a celebration of a wedding that feels more like a funeral. The Mooncrest Pack dines and drinks as if this is the happiest night of their lives, as if they don’t see the bride sitting stiffly at the head of the table, drowning in her silence. As if they don’t hear the rapid beating of my heart, caged in my chest like a war drum. Alderon Kane sits beside me, his presence as overwhelming as ever. His golden eyes gleam under the soft candlelight, watching me like a predator. Like he’s waiting for something. I clench my fists under the table. My wrist still burns from where he held me earlier, dragging me into this nightmare. The mark he left during the ceremony throbs against my skin—a fresh reminder that I belong to him now. At least, that’s what he thinks. I force my gaze to the hall. It’s grand, draped in silk and gold, filled with warriors and pack members drinking to my suffering. Their voi

The moment Alderon stepped out of the room, I pulled myself together. My hands curled into fists as I forced my breathing to steady. I sat up on the massive bed, my gaze flickering around the room. It was unfamiliarly enormous, a space that exuded both power and restraint.Dark wooden walls stretched high, their rich color absorbing most of the dim lighting. The ceiling arched elegantly, lined with intricate carvings of wolves running through a moonlit forest. A massive stone fireplace dominated one side of the room, its embers still glowing faintly from an earlier fire. A thick black fur rug sprawled across the cold floor beneath my feet, and the bed—goddess, the bed—was large enough to fit three people, draped in dark silken sheets that felt too luxurious against my skin.Everything smelled like him. Pine, earth, and something undeniably dangerous.I had to find my sister.I could feel it in my bones—she was here somewhere, within these walls. But where? My chest tightened at the th

The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silver glow over the quiet forest beyond the castle walls. I stood near the balcony, the cool breeze brushing against my skin, carrying the distant scent of pine and earth.Behind me, the door creaked open. Footsteps. A presence I knew too well.Alderon.I didn’t turn around, my fingers tightening around the edge of the stone railing. My heart pounded as he stopped a few feet away, silent. Waiting. Finally, I spoke, my voice barely above a whisper. “I hated you for so long.”“I know,” Alderon said, his voice rough with something unreadable. Regret, maybe. Or something deeper.I turned to face him, the man I had once sworn to destroy. The man I had blamed for everything. The father of my child. And yet, standing here now, I saw him differently. Not the monster I had believed him to be. Not the villain I had painted in my mind. But a man who had suffered just as I had. A man who had carried burdens in silence, allowing me to hate him to pro

Only fear. Only anger.A baby.Alderon’s child. My fingers curled into fists over the fabric of my gown. I didn’t even realize I was crying until a soft knock echoed against the heavy door. Before I could answer, it creaked open, and Serena stepped inside. She smiled gently. “Hey.” Closing the door behind her, she walked toward me. “How do you feel?”I laughed bitterly, shaking my head. “How do I feel?” My throat tightened as I looked up at her. “I feel terrible, obviously. I can’t believe I’m pregnant with Alderon’s child when all I want to do is kill him.”Serena’s smile faded. “Rose—”“I don’t know what to do,” I cut in, my voice raw. “I don’t want this.” A fresh wave of emotion rose as I pressed a hand to my stomach. “I don’t want his child.”Serena’s brows furrowed. “Rose—”“I despise him,” I h

A month had passed since Derek’s death, yet I was still trapped in the nightmare he left behind. I moved through the days like a ghost—silent, hollow, drifting through time without purpose.I barely spoke. I barely felt.Nothing mattered anymore. So when Eva came to fetch me for breakfast—sent by Alderon’s mother—I didn’t resist. There was no use. I let her dress me in soft silks, braid my hair, and dust my skin with perfume, like I was nothing more than a lifeless doll.I entered the dining hall without a word.Sunlight poured through the tall windows, casting a golden glow over the long wooden table. Plates of roasted meats, fresh fruit, and warm bread filled the air with an aroma that should have been inviting. But it wasn’t.Not to me.Serena sat beside Alderon’s mother, laughing softly. She looked content—at peace. As if she had already forgotten everything we had been through.I hadn’t.I never would.Sliding into my chair across from Alderon, I kept my head down. His golden eye

The scent of warm stew fills the air, but my stomach twists at the thought of eating.“Luna,” she murmurs, cautiously placing the tray on the small table beside the bed. “You have to eat.”I glare at her, my eyes red and swollen. My throat is raw from the silent sobs I refused to let escape. I don’t answer. I can’t.Eva hesitates, her fingers twisting in the fabric of her dress. A soft knock pulls me from sleep. I blink, my body heavy, my limbs sore. The space beside me is empty—Alderon is gone. Wrapping the blanket around my chest, I clear my throat. “Come in.” The door creaks open, and Eva steps inside, carrying fresh clothes. Her posture is relaxed, different from the first day we met, but there’s something unreadable in her gaze. She sets the clothes on the bed before walking toward the basin, pouring warm water into the tub. “The Alpha has asked me to prepare you,” she says gently. “There’s going to be an execution today, and he wants you to be there.” I freeze. An execution? My heart pounds against my ribs. A lump lodges itself in my throat. “Why?” My voice comes out hoarse. Eva lowers her gaze. “He didn’t say.” But I already know. Maybe this is a warning. A reminder of what happens to those who defy him. Maybe this is his way of showing me the consequences of running away again. I swallow hard, my fingers tightening around the blanket. “
