Hunter’s eyes opened and met with that of a young nurse by his side. He checked where he was and it seemed like a clinic. He looked around and saw a number of beds and some people laying on them. He tried to get up but felt a surge of pain on the lower part of his body.
“Don’t move,” the nurse said. “You got burnt pretty bad.”
“Ouch,” he moved regardless and saw his legs all burnt up.
“I said don’t move or the burns will be rubbed.”
“Where is the boy?”
“Oh, the boy you were brought in with?”
“Yes.”
“He was taken to the city hospital. His burns are severe.”
Hunter seemed a little confused, “How long have i been out?”
“It’s been three nights now,” the nurse responded and went to tend to another patient.
Three nights, he thought. He had never been unconscious for three nights
At Chingwere Level 1 hospital, a patient in a ward kept shouting and screaming at the nurses. It had been three days now since he was brought in. The people who brought him in didn't wait to answer much questions; they just dropped him in and rushed back to where they had come from. The only thing the nurses knew was that he was a prince from a certain village which apparently, the Chief’s house had caught fire. They felt pity for him because he is the sole survivor of the ghastly accident; His whole family had died in the fire outbreak. Two nurses heard the loud screams from the ward. “When will he shut up?” The first nurse asked.“He’s in pains and you could see he is a village boy, he’s probably scared and not used to all these,” the second nurse added.“Huh, it’s now becoming irritating and he still doesn’t want anyone to wash his wounds. How will he get well?”“He got burnt so ba
Early Sunday morning, Ludo woke up and came to her senses as she saw the bedroom she was in. She was at Melanie’s. She remembered what happened the previous day and reached for her phone. She found several missed calls from an unknown number and Lance. She had called her dad before she reached Melanie’s place. She didn’t know how to call Lance and tell him she had messed up. She didn’t want to think about that and got out of bed. She went into the shower and a couple of minutes later, came out and found Melanie on the bed with a tray of breakfast on her side.“What can i do without you?” Ludo reached for the tray. “You’re the only good thing from six years ago.”“I know,” Melanie smiled. “What happened yesterday?”“I’m sorry i didn’t tell you last night. I just wanted to sleep.”“I understand.”“Guess who i met?”“Who?&rdqu
Many, Many years ago in Chisoti village, something atrocious happened that each and every person who had heard or witnessed it never wanted it to be mentioned again.Like each day, 26 year old Chovu returned from the field with his younger brother Mapulanga. They were the closest amongst their siblings. They had two sisters and one older brother who was the next in line to become the chief. The siblings were known to have gotten along with each other perfectly especially when one was in trouble.Chovu and Mapulanga reached their house and found their sisters preparing supper for the whole family. Their elder brother was talking to their old sick father and was not to be disturbed.“They are talking again?” Mapulanga looked at Chovu.“They always talk, these two. I wonder what they talk about huh,” Chovu added.“We know he’s the next in line but we all want the attention too.”Chovu laughed, “Lo
Her heart almost out of place and not knowing what the near future held for her, Ludo walked quickly to the gate that she dropped some files in her hand. She bent down and picked them all up. While standing up, she felt a cold rush of air on her neck, she turned around. She felt like someone was watching her. She tried to look around but there was no one around. She walked into the building, her eyes everywhere. Upon entering, she saw Lance and Caesar’s cars in the parking lot. She cussed herself about what happened on Saturday. She entered and found Lauren on the reception busy typing something on a laptop. Ludo passed her without saying anything and went directly to her office. As soon as she put her handbag on the table, Lance was standing on the door with his hands in the pocket.“Goo … good morning sir,” Ludo stuttered.“Follow me,” Lance turned around.Ludo didn’t know what to touch or carry. She just started off
Trying to think of what had happened in the two villages in two consecutive nights bothered and gave Hunter a terrible headache. He had first thought of Ben and Devi and knowing them, he knew everything was about the land. What if they planned on getting rid of Chief Chovu’s whole family including his daughter in the other village? He asked himself. What was the big deal with the land that they were willing to go to the extent of killing everyone in their way? He knew they worked as contractors but who was behind all the scheme? He remembered what Walutanga’s sister said before dying. She mentioned something about children, did she mean her children? That wasn’t his concern at the moment but Walu was and he had to get to him as soon possible. He didn’t know why but there was some sort of urgency in his heart and through his job in the past, he learned to trust his instinct. The truck he had gotten onto had many problems on the way. They had to stop sev
Hunter shoved a table out of his way and grabbed Devi by his coat and pulled him, smashing him against another patient's bed. Some patients were now awake wondering what was happening. Hunter quickly checked on Walu who was having a hard time breathing but he knew he was going to be fine. As he turned around, a punch landed on his cheek knocking out his molar instantly. This small man had the power of Goliath, Hunter thought as he spat the tooth out. Devi grabbed a table and threw it on Hunter who briskly missed it. The two men stood panting heavily looking at each other. Hunter was bleeding.“So my suspicions were right,” Hunter said and went, “But why Devi?”“You know me?” Devi seemed shocked.“Who wouldn’t know the duo Ben and Devi and the mess they leave when handling things?”Devi laughed, “Are we that careless?”“Always have been.”“May i know who you a
Devi drove into his yard and found Ben’s car parked there. His head felt like it could drop off from the neck. He got out of the car and slowly walked to the front door limping. As soon as he entered the house, he directly went to his little bar in his living room and grabbed a quarter bottle of Jameson and gulped it all the way down his oesophagus. He then put the bottle on the counter and wondered where Ben was. He heard footsteps behind him and turned around, there stood Ben with a weary face.“Damn!” Devi gritted his teeth. “Sometimes you act like this is your house.”Ben didn’t say anything but walked past him and grabbed the same bottle he had drank from and gulped as well. If Devi knew, he would have noticed that Ben was in turmoil.“Why would you need that for?” Devi grabbed the bottle from him.As Devi wanted to take another sip, he heard footsteps coming from the other room and knew there was anoth
Ludo was wide awake early in the morning. She never had much sleep during the night. She saw the sun rise when she was about to dose. When leaving for the firm, she went to the room Walutanga had slept and found him conscious, arguing with her mother. When he saw her, he started shouting and screaming quavering Hunter’s name. She introduced herself and made it clear that he was there following Hunter’s request.“Where is he?” he asked.“He will come, don’t worry. He has to take care of some things. There are some people who wants to hurt you.”Walutanga remembered what had happened last night. When Ludo mentioned her name, he remembered Hunter talking about her to him and gradually became calm. She left him with an assurance that her mother would take good care of him till he got better. He was reluctant at first but he had no option. For Hunter to bring him to these people, it means he trusted them and therefore
****ONE MONTH LATER***** Ludo, Lance, Kate and Walutanga came out of the Magistrate court excited. They had managed to put the criminals behind bars. Naveen was sentenced to forty years imprisonment. Ben cooperated by being an informant and his sentence was reduced to 10 years. Grace was put in a mental hospital. After Mapulanga died, she somehow went crazy. “Ludo!” Melanie shouted at Ludo. Ludo went over to where Melanie was. She was with her husband and son. “Hey beautiful family,” said Ludo. “Congratulations to you Ludo” Melanie’s husband said. “Thanks Norton and thank you Melanie,” she hugged her. “You really helped us clear Hunter's name.” “No problem dear. Where is he by the way?” Melanie asked. “He never came to trial. Not even a single day. The moment he was released after that arrest, he went AWOL.” she said. “That’s Hunter for you,” Ludo replied with a smirk. “Anyways, We are going now.” Melanie
Driving a Land Rover Discovery at the speed of light, Naveen kept his eyes on the road while engaging Hunter. He wanted to know more but Hunter couldn’t tell him things he also wasn’t sure about.Immediately after putting a bullet into Devi’s neck, Naveen had pressured Hunter. “Who assassinated my old man?”Confused, looking at Devi’s lifeless body, Hunter had answered, “I told you before, it’s just a speculation.”“Tell me about it!” Naveen had yelled.“Come on man. It’s just a speculation. I know the man who pulled the trigger but the mastermind behind it is the one i am not sure of.”“Who pulled the trigger?”“Some guy named Stone.”“I don’t know anyone by that name. Why would he want my dad dead?”Hunter had gone quiet.“Hunter I am talking to you!” Naveen had pointed the gun at Hu
Unshaken, Hunter stepped towards Naveen and stood face to face with him. “I know you can kill me right here right now but i don’t have any beef with you Naveen. I have no problem with you or your family. I came here for Devi.“This is my house!” Naveen pushed him back.“And it so happened Devi is here. He almost killed an entire family in Chisoti village to get you that land. He didn’t succeed because of me.”This was news to Naveen, completely different from what he was told. “I don’t care what you tell me, you killed my father Hunter.”Irritated, Hunter said, “I didn’t kill him for crying out loud. I might know who did though.”When Naveen wanted to speak, they heard tires screeching outside and Hunter instantly figured it was Devi. Not minding Naveen in his way, he took off bumping him out of his way and found his way outside. He found two guards who seemed ready for h
Kate moved back and forth as she checked her watch. Where is he? She gritted her teeth. It was now getting dark and they had agreed to meet up but he was nowhere to be seen. She hated to be kept waiting.“Am i late?” Hunter asked, coming out behind her.“Yeah,” she answered annoyed. “Let’s get going. You’re riding in the trunk.”Hunter didn’t say anything. He walked round the car as she followed him. She watched him open the trunk, get into it and before she could close it, she said, “Have you heard anything from Ludo today?”“No,” he responded looking up. “I bet she’s fine. The less we hear from her, the safer she is.”“But i need to know where that Stone guy is.”“You will, let’s get going. You’re not the only one after someone.”She slammed the trunk in his face and walked back to the driver's door. Sh
She stood before the gate, looked at her watch: 18:41. She knocked again for the third time. The neighborhood was quiet. No one was in sight and that gave her chills but it was probably because of what she’d been through lately. Get ahold of yourself Ludo, she told herself. The gate squealed and Kate peeped. She saw Ludo and smiled. She widely opened it and before she could let her in, she looked around to be sure no one was around and then motioned her to enter.“I thought you were not going to show up,” Kate said as they walked to the door.“I keep my word Kate,” Ludo said. They entered the house and Kate offered Ludo a drink but she refused. There was some tension between the two women. Obviously, a lot had changed since they last met and they really needed to address the elephant in the room. Kate broke the awkward silence and asked Ludo about how she had been and how her parents were and if they were still together. They
Hunter sprinted after Stone. He saw him cross the busy road without fear. The cars hooted causing traffic on the road. Hunter ran past the cars sliding on top of the hood of one car. He could see Stone looking back as he ran and everytime he did, he increased his pace but Hunter was on him like a lion. Getting closer to him, Hunter grabbed Stone's shirt bringing him to a stop and they both fell in the middle of the road.Stone’s bag was laying on the road. Hunter slowly got up panting heavily. Stone looked at Hunter as if he knew him but didn’t say a word. He dived for his bag while Hunter jumped on but he rolled over and reached for the .44 Magnum Handgun and pointed it at Hunter.Hunter raised his hands in the air. Stone stepped back whilst looking around. In a flash, a soldier dived at Stone sending them both to the ground. Hunter stepped back and wanted to turn around when he was hit in the back with a plank; he almost fell.“Don’t mo
The previous night, after being shockingly stabbed by a machete, Ben was left gasping for air and bleeding heavily. How could he have underestimated that b****** Mapulanga? He cussed himself. He had never being this stupid. If only he could be given a chance to kill that fool, he would but looking at how things stood, he would be dead in a few minutes if the blood flow wouldn’t be contained. Damn, life flashed on his face. The k3 million wasn’t going to be spent. If Devi could play the game right, he would get it all. Screw Devi, he gasped for air even more. He was his bestfriend though. One only friend in crime. One chance, just a chance, he begged looking at the heavens. From the darkness appeared a man wearing a hood. Ben couldn’t see properly but he tried to speak. Words couldn’t leave his mouth. The man got closer and knelt before him, it was Hunter.“Jesus!” Ben spit some blood. “Not him not him.”“You&
Ben knelt before Walutanga and whispered, “This is not a personal vendetta, chap,” he started untying him.The three men got to where they were and stood looking at Ben untying Walu. He finished and turned to face them.“Where is Mapulanga?” he asked looking around.“He told us that you should take the boy to the palace in the evening,” one of the men answered.“What!” Ben yelled. “Who does he think he is? The agreement was that we meet here. He signs the papers and i hand the boy over to him. I have to get back to the city.”The three men looked at each other indifferent to what Ben was blabbering about. They had passed on the message and that was it. They told him that they had to go back. Ben was even more upset that he had to deal with Walutanga for at least another six hours. He calmed himself with the hope that it was only six hours and then their job would be done; he would be on hi
Walutanga cried his lungs out till he got tired. For the last few hours, He couldn’t see anything but could feel he was confined to a tiny space and he was in something that was moving. He remembered what happened before he blacked out.He was with Hunter and Ludo and Hunter was fighting the little man who seemed to get the better of him. He had woken up at a house with Ludo by his side who didn’t seem to be alive. He tried to wake her up but she wasn’t waking up till the little man came. Walutanga watched him admire the unconscious Ludo till he started undressing her. He couldn’t watch what the little man wanted to do with Ludo. He got up and fought him off throwing anything he could in the room at him. He dragged Ludo to his side and threatened the man that he would kill him. He knew he couldn’t but he was lucky when the other man came in the room.“What’s wrong Devi?” the other man, who happened to be Ben, had asked.
