“No...” she whispered, her body awash with apprehension.
“Mate!” Her wolf cried again and again, trying to leap out of her breast and launch herself at him. Her body was already half off the seat and on the dais, he also took a step forward, staring at her like he was thunderstruck.
Freya wrestled control from her wolf and planted her ass back down, breathing hard.
“What is this?” Her mind spun. “It must be a trick.”
Yes! He must somehow be manipulating her into thinking she found her mate. She didn’t know how but the sneaky bastard was trying to weasel out of the sure death that awaited him. She blinked and his composure was back in place. He wasn’t looking at her anymore, he was instead staring at the female that just appeared at the end of the aisle. The music started and the bride walked down the aisle towards... her mate! Outrage brought her to her feet and her chest twisted painfully with some horrible emotion.
“My mate! Mine!!!” Her wolf cried, rattling her cage and lethal claws punched out of her fingers which she quickly concealed.
“No.” She shook her head, backing away. It must be a mistake, she had never asked for a mate and she didn’t want one. She shuddered as her wolf wrestled control with her and she cursed and closed her hands into fists to hide the claws that wouldn’t go down. She hated the presence of her wolf because unlike her other half that was trained as an assassin to feel nothing, her wolf felt everything!
The bride stopped in front of him and her mate took the other woman’s hand. Freya seethed, unable to control her emotions. She should retreat, approach this situation when she was more in control but her feet were stuck.
Over his bride’s shoulder, his eyes slid back to where she formerly stood but she had already retreated into the shadows. None of the guards saw her as she slipped onto the roof.
On her belly, magic unfurled in her hands and and she focused the dark arrow on his heart. A mate complicated everything, he needed to go but her wolf fought back, roaring her disagreement and her fingers shook. She gaped, shocked because her fingers have not shaken in front of a target in the last eleven years!
“Don’t you dare.” Her wolf Venna hissed. “He is our mate!”
Freya ignored her and steadied her hand again.
“No!!!” Venna screamed as Freya let the arrow loose.
The dark missile slammed into its target on the dais and everyone gasped with shock. Brilliant red bloomed on the bride’s exquisite white dress just over her heart. Blood drained from her shellshocked face right before she collapsed.
Shocked, Freya drew back, her mind racing. She had never missed a single target in the last eight years since she became Aremin’s assassin. This was her first.
On the dais, Riordan caught his bride’s body in his arms and while the hall erupted into chaos and everyone looked for her, his eyes came unerringly to the roof and met hers.
“Shit! Shit! Shit!” She gasped, scrambling up. How did he find her? Her goddamn scent! The stupid wolf!
She ran, her long legs eating up the distance swiftly as she raced from the roof and leaped smoothly onto the next. Her lithe body was nothing but a streak of shadow as she slipped away, her heart pounding. She didn’t know why she didn’t aim for him, she should have killed him. She was so tempted to turn around and finish her assignment but she was too unstable. She needed a little more time to figure out how to kill her mate.
“I thought you went dormant!” She snarled at Venna. “Twelve years you have not said a word! And you choose now?!”
Venna was silent again. She didn’t deem her worthy to talk to but she has been screaming in her head when she thought her mate would be eliminated.
“Glad to see where your priorities lie you traitor!” Freya snarled.
A hard force suddenly rammed into her and knocked her from the roof. She fell to the ground and flipped, landing like a cat. Riordan leaped and landed in front of her and Freya flinched.
“Mate!” Venna exclaimed enthusiastically in her head.
“Shut up!” She snarled.
“You.” He growled.
His voice! The rich bass, like smooth drizzling honey grabbed her attention. They circled each other and she watched him move, enraptured by the strength he radiated. His scent drove her crazy, an irresistible mix of man and wolf that compelled her closer.
“Anyone that follows me dies.” She told him.
He had the deepest black eyes she ever saw and those eyes held nothing but fury as he stared at her.
“You killed her! How?” He snarled.
“Did I? Do you see any of the hallowed weapons on me? Or are you saying your guards are not competent enough?” She asked sassily.
“Blood pays blood, you will die by my hands!” He growled and shifted into a large black wolf.
A man of few words then? She lunged away from his massive wolf jaws and he snarled and cane at her again, faster than anything she ever fought. His next lunge was too quick for her to evade. Magic sizzled as she slammed a shield of darkness up. He crashed into it and recoiled, shifting back.
“What are you?” He asked her, advancing and she drew her daggers that the guards never discovered.
“I should have killed you from the start!” She spat.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance.“ He agreed. “Now you will suffer for it, mate.”
He spat the word between them like he tasted something vile before he came at her again. She slipped under his strike smoothly and their dance of death resumed. He was fighting with nothing but his claws and though he was fast, she was faster. She screamed and with a series of quick slashes, opened up a mark on his face and over his heart. He retreated as the wounds sealed themselves, appearing surprised at her skill.
She raised her bloody daggers with a wicked grin.
“Did that sting?” She smirked, ready for round two. He roared and tackled her, surprising her for one crucial second and yanking her to him.
“Let go of me!” She yelled, thrashing in his grip but he was impossibly strong. He pressed closer into his back and her next breath caught as her body reacted. Her back arched into him and his skin on her skin dissolved the thoughts from her head.
“Be still!” He snarled. Was it her imagination or was his voice gruffer than it was before? He yanked up the sleeve of her dress and exposed her tattoo.
“A spider.” He spat, reviled.
Yes, she was. Every assassin in The Den was called a Spider and damn him, she was the best at what she did!
She slammed her head back, breaking his nose and catching him by surprise and when he released her, she brought her dagger up, aiming for his heart. She was going to end it but he caught her wrist and broke it. Pain exploded in her wrist as she staggered back but she snarled as she launched her second dagger. It should have hit his heart but the bastard moved and the dagger slammed into his chest. With a roar, he tackled her into the ground. He yanked the dagger from his chest and pressed it into into her throat.
“Do it!” She dared him. “Slit my throat then.”
Those dark eyes flashed and the dagger dug deeper into her neck, drawing blood and yet he hesitated.
“Kill me!” She screamed.
Suddenly, his gaze slid down to her lips and she became aware of the strangely intimate position they were in. His eyes were no longer as cold or as furious and she flushed, goosebumps racing down her arms. She felt the prominent bulge against her belly and instead of revulsion, her breaths quickened and her body responded, delicious warmth drizzling between her thighs.
She had once beaten a man unconscious for an identical crime but this time, she was confused by her body’s responsive longing.
“Who the fuck are you?” He asked her gruffly. He sounded perplexed, almost as much as she was. He wanted to take her, it was so obvious. She stared at his lips and Freya was horrified to admit that she wanted him to.
With a growl, she threw him off her.
“I don’t care who or what you are. The next time you lay a finger on me, you will lose all of them!” She snarled.
She turned and ran away as fast as her legs would carry her without looking back.
“You did what?!” Aremin asked her and chills ran down her spine. “You forgot your assignment.”“No I didn’t.” Freya replied. “Then tell me why.” He demanded. He was outwardly calm but she knew his tells. His left eye twitched as evidence of his fury and he spun the gold ring on his index repeatedly. He was very upset and that meant she was in danger. “Speak Freya, and you better have a damned good reason for fucking up the most important assignment I ever gave you.” He gritted out. She couldn’t kill him because he was her mate. As she stared at her master, her tongue was unable to form those words. Her palms sweated because she never kept a secret from him, not even one. This man had seen her totally naked, had been the one to pick up her pieces and put her back together when the trainings nearly took her life, he had tattooed the marks on her body, and he knew everything about her, down to the last meal she ate and how long it would take to come out of her system. For a while, sh
“What are you not telling me you huge bastard?” Fellin came after him. “I’m coming with you. You know it’s suicide to approach The Tower right?” “I’m not going to The Tower.” Riordan replied.“Then where?!” Fellin asked. “You said you were her target. Do you not know how dangerous it is for you to be out there?”He smirked, remembering her hair flicking as she threw a punch into his jaw. Underestimating her wasn’t part of his plan. She was powerful and fast and her reflexes were unmatched, a force to be reckoned with. His body thrummed with the thought of a rematch, coming face to face with her again and it shamed him. Winson’s killer had been right at his fingertips and he let her go. Worse, he had wrestled with the urge to take her hard on that sandy floor. “Does it look like I cannot handle myself?” He asked his beta. “That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying it won’t be bad to have some backup anyway.” Fellin persisted. “No. She is mine.” He growled. He hesitated in killing h
The doors opened to admit Riordan at the top of the dais and time in the room froze. In a dark shirt and dark pants tailored to show off his strong muscular physique, he was breaking everyone’s expectations of him wearing the customary mourning white clothes. He was the only person not wearing a mask, and also the only one without a date so one could say he was mourning in his own way. She watched him alight the stairs and nothing could have prepared her for the irresistible pull that drew her to him. She craved his touch on her skin, his scent in her lungs. It wasn’t hard to remember why she hated him but it was like he had seized control of her body from half a room away, pressing obscene urges into her mind despite her repulsion of him. She shook her head and fought against the pull so hard her body shook.“A drink, my lady?” A serving girl asked and offered her a tray.“Thank you.” She took one gratefully and sipped. It was a disappointment to realise she wasn’t prepared for thi
Freya jerked back into consciousness and immediately knew that something was wrong. Shackles chafed against her skin, holding her wrists and ankles bound securely and the bitter taste of failure settled on her tongue. Riordan sat in front of his desk, carefully turning a sheaf of papers. “You’re up.” He said and stood.“You should have killed me when you had the chance!” She hissed. “Why go to all the trouble?”He folded his arms in front of him and glared right back. “Do you remember Winson Savvey?” He asked her and her brow furrowed. “Should I?” She asked and she could tell her answer infuriated him by the muscle that ticked on his forehead. “Does the name not ring a bell?” He pressed. She suddenly remembered that his own surname was Savvey. “What business do I have to do with a relative of yours?” She asked. He suddenly grabbed her by the throat and slammed her into the wall and she choked. “Do you not even have the decency to remember your murder victims?” He growled, his
The next time Riordan came in, Freya was ready. She dove from her perch above the door and tackled him to the ground, her claws scouring his chest in deep bloody lines. His beating heart was just beneath her, all she needed was her dagger thrust into the offending organ and her target would be eliminated. She called to the darkness and her eyes widened when the magic refused to unfurl into a weapon as usual. Her momentary shock cost her. He gripped her hands and flipped her over his head. She landed hard on her back and twisted to get away but he grabbed her ankle and dragged her closer, his huge body pinning her to the ground. Her claws sharpened and she raised them to rip out his throat but he caught her wrist and pinned them both above her head. She bucked and tried to throw him off or rip her wrists from his grip but even though he secured her with only one hand, it was impossible to get away. She cursed colourfully, damn werewolves and their inhuman strength! His fist suddenly p
She landed hard, the breath knocked out of her. The missile hit the opposite wall with so much force that it should have brought the roof crashing down but the house merely shook, absorbing the impact. “Stay down.” Riordan growled and went to the window, peering out. He cursed colourfully and she leaped up. “Who are those?” She asked, angry at her hope being dashed. “What do they want?”He looked calm again when he turned to her. “Go to the inner room now! If you want to survive the next hour, you had better stay in there and out of sight.” He ordered and she balked at being ordered around by him. Without waiting for her response he prowled outside to meet his guests. Go inside her foot. She pulled up at the window again, peering out discreetly. She watched him stop in front of the army, his arms loosely at his side. “Derrick!” He called. “I didn’t expect to have you.” “I have no time for pleasantries Riordan. Where is the bride I gave to you?” The man called Derrick snarled.
Riordan’s face held a scowl and her heart pounded with something akin to fear. The ball in her hand burned, feeling like a dirty secret. “Step away from the chest.” He growled and she threw her shoulders back and glared defiantly.“Why? Is there something I shouldn’t find?” She asked and his nostrils flared with annoyance. “For once! Do as you are told!” He snarled. Somebody really didn’t want her to find the ball. Her hand closed around the item in question and she felt her eyes widen when she closed her hand on nothing at all. She stared at her hand in shock to confirm that the ball was gone and before she knew it she was tackled into the floor. “Do you want to die?!” Riordan growled above her and she laughed. “Mate, is that not the whole point of this dance? You either kill me or I kill you.” She snarled. Remembering her father’s scream and her mother’s blood, she swore it would be her that ended him, even if she perished in the process. She threw him off her and paced. “Who
“Watch out!” Riordan’s warning came a little too late. Freya landed hard on her bound hands and she hissed with pain as her shoulder shifted to the front. Riordan leapt from his horse and ran for her just as another missile whistled through the air again. She flinched and he caught the arrow that nearly punched into her eye in midair. With an enraged growl, he shoved her behind him. “Show yourself!” He snarled and the leaves ruffled. The twins stepped out and she gasped, hurrying to her feet. One of her worst nightmares was playing out in front of her. “Shadow.” Hans said with a dirty smile. “There are rumours spreading in town about you, you know. They say you are dead.” “Seeing the state of her, that would have been a better end wouldn’t it?” Dirien sneered and she stiffened. Damn Riordan and these stupid chains. She wouldn’t mind a hole opening up in the ground so she could crawl into it. “Chains or no, I won’t find it difficult to whoop both of your asses.” She bluffed. They
“Shinay, what have they done to you?” Geoffriane asked when she stopped in front of him. “You are not yourself.”“No.” She replied. “I wasn’t myself for the longest time. I just found myself again.”The rest of the Wild Hunt rode to stand behind him and he shook his head. “No, we had a vision. It was meant to be.” Said Geoffriane. “We waited for you for a hundred thousand years. You are the only one that can save us.”“I still believe in the vision.” She said as she stepped forward and tentatively touched the Ghost Rider’s cold face. “You have suffered for too long, thanks to merciless gods that use us only for their amusement.”“So let’s kill everybody. It’s the only way we can get eternal rest.” Geoffriane pleaded. “There’s another way.” She pointed out. “I would never leave you to continue suffering eternally. If the world won’t die for you, then you die for the world. It is time for the Wild Hunt to end.”He reared back and away from her, drawing in a shocked breath. “What you
The force of Shinay’s dark magic shoved all three of them back, but she tensed, unable to finish the last step of ending their lives completely. “Freya, remember yourself.” Adrian said, stepping forward despite the heatwaves of Shadow magic that she was exuding. She shook her head and pushed him back harder and he groaned with pain as her magic started to sear his skin right off his bones.“I’m not Freya!” She snarled. “Yes you are.” Zeldaurus replied, pushing forward. He also tried to step forward but he couldn’t take up to two steps before her magic forced him to a stop.“We are not your enemies.” Zeldaurus said. “”We are here to help you.”Tears streamed down her eyes and she kept her hands up, her magic up. “No, you are my enemies.”She had no idea what they had done to her brain, why it felt like someone had broken her head open and was scooping out the contents with a scalding hot spoon. Only her enemies would curse her to feel this pain, to see the painful memories that u
The Wild Hunt opened the door to the next realm and Shinay lead them into it. Everywhere they went, screams started then blood started to flow. Death was no longer inevitable, it was here. She was drunk on the dense trail of Death they carved. Death was the beginning of the world and it was the end. She didn’t remember who she was before, what she was before, and she didn’t want to. Whoever she was before was weak, now she was exactly as she was meant to be. The screams had started afresh and she smiled coldly as she raised her face to the sky and sent thunderbolts down into the realm. The realm inhabitants were magic wielders and they tried to defend themselves with it. But how could you kill what was already dead? Behind her, the army of the Dead rode, screaming their rage as they rode to avenge their misfortune. Her eyes turned a solid black as she prepared the dark storm that would destroy every living entity in the realm. Her eyes caught a sudden shimmering in the air, a por
The She-wolf glanced up when Riordan shattered the door and she paled quickly. "Who the fuck are you?" The male that was inside her snarled and she hissed. "Shut up."'She said and climbed down from him. Riordan folded his arms and watched as she took her time covering herself with a robe, before grabbing a glass of wine and pressing it to her lips."Leave us." She told the man. "Leave the building." He advised him and the man sent him a dark look before shutting the door behind him. "I wasn't informed you were in town." Said Aria. "If I were, I wound have made some preparations in advance.""I like to be discreet." Riordan replied, watching as she sashayed to her bedside and perched on her bed, crossing her leg. "I appreciate a discreet man, especially when they are so caring as to check up on a lonely She-wolf.""You sent the Council dogs after her." He growled and she forced a smile to her lips. "You should really engage in the act of small talk, it can be quite engaging and
For the umpteenth time, Adrian found himself pacing.“You’re going to wear a path in my rugs.” Rooke growled. “One more word and I’ll torch the damn rug.” He growled in reply but he did sit his ass down. M“I’m not good at this, sitting on my hands.”“There’s nothing more you can do.” Rooke said patiently. “You already tried going after her but you cannot penetrate Faerie’s security.”“But how was it possible that she made it in and I didn’t?” He pondered aloud and Rooke shrugged. “Perhaps she has Fae blood in her ancestry. Regardless, there’s nothing more you can do but wait now.” Rooke said calmly, trying to appeal to his rational mind but Adrian’s mind was spinning a thousand terrible scenarios, all preventing him from relaxing even a little. “What if my portal went rogue and threw her into another realm?” “Adrian!” Rooke snarled, standing. His childhood friend looked like he was on the verge of strangling him. “You said yourself that you felt your portal open into Faerie. Yo
Faerie was first. The sky darkened suddenly, and all of the Fae glanced up at the ominous sign. Fariee weather never changed, and never before had they seen the sky darken with heavy clouds and the clouds roil with lightning and thunder. They all looked to the sky as the Wild Hunt emerged."Take back your power." Geoffraine urged and Shinay cast a perusing glance at the realm spread out before her. There, something called to her from deep inside the Winter court. She rode her horse for the piece of her that called to her."Ah. There she is." The female remained unconscious and inside her was the source of her ailment. Shinay thought she looked familiar but she didn't care to know why. Her power was a roiling ball of darkness in the female's chest, sucking up all of the female's energy and leaving her comatose. That was what Shinay wanted. "Come." Shinay crooked a finger and that ball eagerly lifted. It was never meant to be inside the female, there was no one alive that could cont
“What are you doing?” She growled. “Release me now or I will make sure I kill every one of you!”The Ghost Rider paused. “But you gave all of your powers away.” He replied and then the others streamed forward, circling around her and taking off their hats. Rather than looking as dead and skeletal as their horses, they were all flesh and bones, all with straight black hair that fell into their eyes and a rigid severe look about their face. She was surrounded. “Why have you brought me here?” She asked, unease raving down her spine as she eyed the single large bed in the room. The others spoke, but their words sounded like thunderbolts, she didn’t understand a single thing they were saying. “You will be ours, as soon as we break you in.” Said their conmander. Break her in? Like how humans broke a horse in? She didn’t wait to hear more. She lunged up and crashed her way through two of the otherworldly creatures, racing for the door and yanking it open- but it was firmly locked. A cry
At first, nothing happened. It was one last moment of silence right before the magic of the blood oath hit her like a ram. She sucked in a breath as the magic sunk into her blood, into her bones and when it pulled back out, it took everything from her. It felt like she died, she was almost sure it took her life away, her soul migrated out of her body, her very essence flowing out through her bloody hand and into the queen. The Queen gasped, staggering back but she kept the contact on her hand. Her magic migrated out of her body, through her hand and into the queen. It streamed out in dark waves, and she could hear Zeldaurus's silent yells but not really. Her world narrowed down into those waves, streaming out faster now. It hurt. She gritted her teeth against the pain, worse than anything she ever felt “; it was in her blood, in her bones. Somebody was screaming, it might have been her, or it might have been the queen, or maybe it was both of them. Her vision jumped as her magic
Immediately she stepped out of the portal, she knew there was trouble. Her hand shot up and and magic fizzled at her fingertips but it sputtered out as some foreign magic settled on her skin, snuffing out her power. She gasped with shock as the invisible net tightened and forced her to her knees. She glared at the slender figure that glided forward in a pearly white gown, the face of the queen which was fast becoming the most irritating face she ever saw. Beside her, Zeldaurus was frozen on his feet as he glared at the Queen, as if he had been immobilised on the spot. The four other warriors fanned out beside the queen, their shrewd gases monitoring every little breath she took. “What is the meaning of this?” Freya hissed, trying to get on her feet but the queen clamped her fist and the invisible net forced her back to her knees.“You can quit your struggling, there is no getting out of that unless I will it.” Said The Queen.Freya’s eyes practically spit fire as she glared at the
