Carmen stared at the deflated front wheel of the car and sighed heavily.
“How long is it going to take?” she asked Joy, the driver, glancing around them and trying not to grow restless.
This was her first time facing a predicament like this one. She had never been stuck in the middle of nowhere before. She was supposed to be at her apartment by now, with Grandpa and Molly waiting for her. They needed to discuss what had happened, and Grandpa deserved more than just an explanation over the phone about why she had a sinking feeling that Eric had something to do with everything going awry in the company.
She didn’t have much proof for now, true. The auditing team hadn’t shown any signs of anything unusual going on, but she knew there were hundreds of ways the evidence could have been wiped out.
Joy stood up after checking the problem, scratching his head. “Not more than fifteen minutes. I’ll change the tire right away.&rdq
Carmen wasn’t sure what to do.If it were one or even two men wanting to shove her into a creepy-looking car, she would have fought tooth and nail and run as fast as she could. But there were three of them, and that one extra man changed the whole damn equation. The power of dominance not only shifted in their favor, it practically fell into their laps.Three men against a woman? No, that was not the fight she wanted to know the consequences of. They could easily catch her one way or the other if she made one more attempt at running, and if she tried to be more difficult than they wanted to deal with, she knew they could physically hurt her without thinking twice. With all the news about crimes against women all over the world, she knew her chances to survive this were better if she did her best to not lose her head.“Come on, we don’t have all day,” the leader of the three, the guy with the ponytail, pushed Carmen towards the othe
“How long is it going to take?” Someone huffed, not sounding happy. “It’s already been three days.”“Give it some time. Her body has gone into shock due to the accident. The way she was brought in, you should be glad she at least survived,” another one replied, tired.“I understand, but I’m sure there must be something more you could do. She can’t lie like that forever—”“Enough with you two,” a new voice chimed in, and then came the touch that settled on her forehead and stroked until Carmen’s half-awakened mind lulled back to sleep. However, not before the same gentle voice whispered into her ear. “Let her rest.”* * *“Why isn’t she waking up, Aunt Will?” In the darkness of her mind, a soft voice rippled in the distance, too far away to be real. &ldq
Carmen wanted to scream her head off, she really did. But that was one thing she couldn’t do because screaming would require a bit of stamina, and she clearly didn’t have much to spare. She was barely able to stand and breathe on her own.“What happened, sweetheart?” Simon continued, looking amused as hell. He returned in front of her, cocking his head to the side, hands sliding into the pockets of his pants. “Cat got your tongue?”Internally, Carmen groaned, simply cursing her miserable luck, before letting her eyes fall shut and her fingers stroke her temple. It was all still so confusing in her head, especially the night of the crash. She remembered being kidnapped for sure, but what she couldn’t pinpoint were the people who came to her rescue.Of course, Carmen was not as stupid or far gone for a case. She could tell Simon had a hand in this, and so did that woman from earlier. But what made absolutely no sens
Carmen watched as the nurse fixed her IV, smiling at her when she was done. “Can you tell me how long before I feel better enough to take care of myself?”The nurse beamed back, checking other vitals on the screen. “Maybe another week or so, but to be honest, it all varies from patient to patient. Some understand the gravity of their health and take very good care of themselves, and then there are some…”Carmen didn’t need to ask in which category the nurse had fitted her. “I never really liked hospitals, they make me anxious.”“Well then, good for you,” the nurse looked around and shrugged. “You’re home.”Hardly,Carmen thought, but didn’t say out loud.* * *Eric sat in his office, going through some papers on his desk when the door to his cabin was shoved open, and in came his ever-raging younger
“I want to make a call.”Despite her attempts to keep as much distance from the biggest jerk she had ever met in her life, Carmen had no choice but to confront him once again. But, of course, she wasn’t looking for him so they could catch up. No, she wanted to find him so she could ask for the most basic thing she shouldn’t have to beg for in the first place. The corner of Simon’s mouth twisted into a smirk long before he even lifted his gaze from the screen of his phone, looking at her as if she hadn’t heard anything more amusing than what had just come out of her mouth. But, of course, he humored her still. Why in the world would he let go of such a good chance?“No can do, sweetheart. Go back to your room.”Annoyance coiled in her chest, and her breathing grew heavy. “I don’t think you heard me. I need to make a call, and I need to do it now.”Sitting in what looked like a lounge
Eric stormed into the office of his uncle, James Logan, and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt.“How dare you?” he growled in his face, seething with blinding rage. “I told you not to even look in her direction, and you went behind my back and called for an attack on her? What the hell is wrong with you?”A look of shock passed over James’ face before he realized what it was about, and he couldn’t help but roll his eyes. He dropped his hands from Eric’s wrists and yanked himself away from the young man’s grip.“Damn, you’re smitten,” he scoffed, shaking his head and tugging at his shirt to brush off any wrinkles this little inconvenience might have caused. He backed away and moved behind his desk once more. “There’s no need to be so mad, however. I didn’t order a hit on her. I just wanted to scare her a little. That…” He looked back up at Eric and grinned way too
Carmen was sitting in the usual room upstairs, staring blankly at the book in her hands when a sudden commotion caught her ears, startling her awake. She sat up straighter quickly, frowning at the closed door, wondering if she should even bother to take a look. It wasn’t as if she cared what Simon and her mom were up to. Sure, the reason for them to be together for any reason at all made her curious as hell, but the truth was, as weird as it sounded, she had decided not to pry. And it was nothing if not poetic justice in her eyes. For years, Diana had stayed away from her family, not bothering to look back even once, so what right did Carmen have to care about what that woman had been doing with her life?Exactly. None at all. However, despite all that, she still found herself peeling the sheets off her legs, putting the book aside, and slowly heading for the door. For some reason that she could not understand, her heart had started to beat like a drum, an
“Are you sure about this?” Carmen asked while watching Ronin drive the car through the familiar black gates, her heart racing in her fragile chest. She felt Ronin’s eyes on her, but the sight of the mansion where she had endured the most painful nine months of her life tugged at her heart, making it impossible for her to look away.“I know it might seem like a bad idea,” he reassured her, his hand finding hers and giving it a gentle squeeze. “But trust me, I’ve thought this through.”Carmen had no other option but to nod, but something continued to gnaw at her. Maybe the idea of returning to that place was somehow more frightening than being near Simon. She was afraid those nine months would come back to haunt her, not that they had ever truly left her in the first place. She swallowed, bracing herself for the hit of memories as soon as the car rolled up at the driveway. Before Ronin even got out of t
After seeing off her parents, Grandpa Edgar—who had been on bed rest ever since his last attack—, Eric and Ronin, Willow sat in the car with Carmen, while Molly sat in the back. None of the kids came to the airport with them. For a long while, no one said anything. But then, Molly broke the silence with a very strange question. “So, just to be sure, does that time-traveling device really work?”Carmen scoffed while Willow wasn’t sure what to say. In the past month, she had been experiencing a bit of memory lapse. She remembered a lot of things, but certain incidents felt like a dream now, like a movie she had watched and forgotten about, and now couldn’t even recall the title or the story. She shrugged. “Maybe? Maybe not? Who cares? I’m just glad we got rid of it.”“Yeah,” Molly nodded in agreement. “True. But still, though. Imagine having a device like that. What do you think, Carmen? Do you think the world would have benefited from something like that?”Carmen kept her eyes on the ro
Willow sat in her room, staring at their family photo that was taken at Carmen and Ronin’s home party a month ago, the day when they announced their second pregnancy.Such a happy day it was.Sure, it was followed by all kinds of bad things, with Lewis Ladder trying to be the mean bastard and wanting his revenge on Diana, to make her pay for what she stole from him. But in the end, everything was fine again. They all made it safe and sound, and no one was terribly hurt. Simon Walsh had disappeared all over again and Diana was back to being secretive about her relationship with that son-of-a-bitch.Well, not that it mattered right now.Willow was pulled out of her thoughts when she heard the knock on the door. When she looked up from the photo she was staring at, she was surprised to find Ronin’s head peeking inside. He looked so silly doing that, it reminded her of their childhood. She scoffed, shaking her head. “Come on, inside. No need to be creepy for so long.”“Thank God,” he fake
The next morning, Jasper and Molly arrived early morning at the Logan’s old mansion. Behind them, Ronin and Carmen got out of their car too.Alice and Ryan squealed seeing each other and before anyone could stop them, they took off inside, ignoring the calls of everything behind them.“God, these kids!” Molly gushed, shaking her head. “They don’t know how to take a pause, do they?”Carmen chuckled, giving Molly a side hug. “Of course, they don’t. Did you forget already? You were just as hyperactive if not less. Did you tell Jasper about that one time when you got lost in the next neighbourhood?”The mention of the incident caused Molly’s cheeks to warm and turn pink. She shoved Carmen away. “No? And he doesn’t need to know.”“What’s not to know?” Appeared Jasper from behind, locking the car and staring at them with strange curiosity, assured that he just missed on something worth knowing.Molly groaned. “Nothing,” she glared at Carmen, silently warning her to not say another word or e
“Are you sure you wanna do this?” Simon asked while Diana stared ahead, arms crossed over her chest.“I have to,” she shrugged, not taking her eyes off the building in front of them. The one that was shut down by the government aeons ago, realizing that the time travelling device held more dangers than they were equipped to handle, and that the money put into such a project was better spent somewhere else.Perhaps they were right. Perhaps the world wasn’t ready for such advancements just yet.Perhaps they would never be. And that was okay.“This is the only way we can put an end to this madness for real.”Simon hummed, nodding slowly. “Well then, what are you waiting for? Let’s do the honours.”Diana breathed in a deep breath, realizing it was time. She took out a small remote from her purse and pressed the only red button on it.In the next moment, there was a loud explosion and the building before them blew up in a huge blast of fire, taking everyone and everything with it.———“What
*One Month Later*Willow sat in her car and stared at the lone gate standing in the middle of nowhere.“Alright. You can do this,” she said to herself and took a deep breath. But then she frowned, biting her bottom lip. “Or maybe you shouldn’t. It’s not like, you know, he cares.” But what if he did? What if this could still work? She didn’t know. Oh God, she didn’t know anything. After that incident with Diana a month ago, it took weeks to get everything back to normal. As Willow had already feared, Diana slowly forgot everything about the time traveling and their conversation about it. The only thing she remembered, and so did everyone else, was talking about the device, stealing it, hiding it, and trying to protect it from getting into the wrong hands. But no one actually remembered doing it. If that made any sense at all.Willow had no idea what exactly the science behind it was, but she was the only one who remembered. Or at least, she remembered a little bit of it. The truth was e
“STOP IT RIGHT NOW!”Simon’s deep voice rumbled throughout the house, leaving not a single person untouched. From the look on his face, it was clear he had hell in his mind. And why wouldn’t he? The sight in front of him was not only disgusting but a complete disaster. In one corner of the house, Carmen stood with her hands tied above her head to a rope that connected her to the fan.In a different corner, Ronin was held back by two men, while a third man aimed a gun at his temple. Simon noticed Ronin had been shot once in the shoulder, and now blood had soaked a part of his shirt completely. At the top of the stairs, there was a very teary, very distressed little boy, held tightly by another giant-looking man.Last but not least, Diana was sprawled on the floor on her back, two men pinning her to the ground while a third sat on her chest, almost choking her.Simon had no choice but to show his displeasure at the sight. He shook his head and huffed. “Dammit! Let’s be honest, this is th
Diana had understood by now that no matter what deed you do, if someone considers it to be wrong, then you have no choice but to pay the price for it.“Please, I beg you,” she fell to her knees, joined her hands and pleased. “Let my daughter go. Let her family free. Punish me however you want, I won’t say a word. Please, just spare my daughter. Spare my daughter for God’s sake!”To Diana’s huge disappointment, the leader only laughed, and so did his minions, as they cracked and doubled over, enjoying the poor predicament of the old woman.“You, assholes!” Ronin snapped, hating everything happening in front of him, wanting nothing more than to kill all those bastards. “Do you have any conscious or not? How could you enjoy this? Are you even humans?”“No. We are not. Satisfied now?” The leader asked, bored, rolling his eyes. But then those same eyes glinted and something wild passed his dangerous face. “We are monsters. We are trained to bring our enemies to their knees, no matter what
Diana returned to the living room and joined Carmen and Ronin. The dozen men continued to keep an eye on them, not giving them even a minute of break.Diana sat quietly, trying to figure out how to get out of their current predicament. She knew her daughter could see how badly she was fidgeting. She knew Ronin could see that she was hurting. But there was nothing she could do. It was after a very long time she was feeling so helpless, so useless, so damn stupid.“Mom, are you okay?” Carmen asked, his voice as sweet and gentle as ever. “What happened inside? Did it work?”Diana could understand the desperation in her daughter’s eyes. Carmen wanted nothing more than to run to her son and hold him tightly to her chest. But these men…these ruthless and pain-in-the-ass men were denying her the most basic and satisfying thing in the world. And it was all because of her mistakes. If only she hadn’t…“Mom?” Carmen spoke again, and Diana had no choice but to be honest.“No. It didn’t work,” sh
Willow sat on the side of the road and stared at the main gate of the Logan residence. It was still too far away for any of the men inside to spot them, but over the last few years, Willow had visited the place so many times, she remembered every single tree and bird along the way.Dawn had broken long ago, and now the sun glared down at them from the peak of the day. It was hot as hell outside, but no matter how many times Dan told her to get inside the car and take respite from the cruel heat, she couldn’t move. It was as if she wanted to punish herself for everything that led to this day. Perhaps if she hadn’t toyed with time, this day wouldn’t have arrived. But something had definitely alerted those men—the organization—and she couldn’t come up with any reason to blame other than herself. She was the one responsible for this. Then why wasn’t she the one to take the brunt of it too? How was any of this fair?“You do realize what you’re doing is not actually helpful, right?” Dan’s v
