The air hung, heavy with tension. I cleared my throat, a futile attempt to scratch the itch there. The sharp cracking sound drilled into my ears.

I couldn’t answer it. The answer always sounded absurd in my ears whenever Luca said it. So I left the question, perching in the air... unanswered.

Titling forward, I picked up my cup of coffee and sipped from it, and my eyes darted around the restaurant.

Alex slipped back into the chair. His fingers resumed tapping on the table, and his eyes did not attempt to look anywhere but at me.

“He doesn’t love you enough too.” Alex probed further, and a mocking smile tainted his lips.

A heat gnawed at my chest, and my grip tightened around the knife. “That’s not the reason.” My eyes rested on the pancake as different thoughts occupied my mind.

“Then tell me, I’m all ears.” The taunting smile persisted on his lips. “Cause if I were the one, I would have put a ring on your finger.” His eyes locked onto mine, and his blue orbs sparkled.
