My breath hitched.

“But that’s not all,” she added.

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

She turned the monitor towards me and pointed.

“There are three heartbeats. You’re having triplets.”

My whole world shattered.

How do I explain this to the world? I went to an art gallery event after years of struggling to sell one piece without success, met a stranger, followed him back home, and had unprotected sex with him and now I'm pregnant with him.

What would people say? What would I tell Gina? For real she would be disappointed. How could I be this careless?

*****************

I stumbled into the apartment in a daze.

Gina looked up from her phone. “Hey, you okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

I dropped onto the couch, my whole body was literally shaking. “Gina… I’m pregnant.”

She blinked. “What….What?”

I swallowed. “And… it’s triplets.”

Gina’s mouth fell open. She stared at me for a full five seconds before speaking. “Triplets?”

I nodded weakly.

She sat back, exhaling sharply. “Damn.”

Silence settled between us for a moment before she straightened up. “Okay. That’s it. We need to find this guy.”

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “How? All I have is his first name.”

“We’ll start with the gallery event,” Gina said firmly. “They keep a guest list. We just need to see it.”

Two days later, we were at the gallery, sitting across from Gina’s manager.

“This is a bit unusual,” he said, adjusting his glasses as he scanned the list.

“Please,” Gina pressed. “It’s important.”

He sighed before sliding the list across the table.

Gina and I leaned in, going through every name on that list carefully.

And then…

“Kane Brown,” Gina read aloud.

The name sent a jolt through my spine.

She turned to me, widened her eyes. “Caroline… Do you know who this is?”

I shook my head slowly.

She pulled out her phone, typed something, and turned the screen towards me.

There he was. Kane Brown. Billionaire. Mysterious. Elusive and also untouchable.

The air left my lungs.

Gina leaned in, in a low but urgent tone.

“You have a billionaire as the father of your unborn kids, what are you going to do about it?”

I kept staring at the screen, with my heart beating so loudly I could barely hear myself think.

Kane Brown.

Not just any billionaire. The richest billionaire in Philadelphia.

I couldn't believe that I had a one-night stand with a billionaire. No wonder he bought all my paintings and left such huge amount for me.

My fingers felt numb as I scrolled through the endless articles about him. CEO of a major investment firm. A powerful, and elusive businessman with a net worth I couldn’t even wrap my head around.

This can’t be real. How did I get here? What would be my fate?

“Caro?”

I barely registered Gina’s voice until she snapped her fingers in front of my face. “Hey! Earth to Caro. Are you going to tell him? What are you going to do?”

I blinked, feeling the blood drain from my face. “Tell him? Gina, do you hear yourself? How in the world would I even tell him? How? He’s a billionaire. He’s not just some guy I can show up to and be like, ‘Hey, remember me? Well, surprise, I’m pregnant with your kids!’”

Gina folded her arms, watching me carefully. “So, what are you going to do? Pretend he doesn’t exist? Get rid of the kids or run away with it?”

I bit my lip. “I don’t know.I'm so confused and lost.”

Gina sighed, but she didn’t push. “Whatever you decide, I’m with you. But don’t let fear make the choice for you.”

I exhaled slowly. She was right. Nevertheless, right now, I have other things to focus on.

The first thing I did was find a new place. I didn't want him to look for me or even run into him any day and I also wanted to give my unborn kid a better house and environment. As much as I want to keep these babies, I want to have some respect. I’d work hard and at least give my kids a good life or even take care of myself for now.

With the money Kane had given me for the paintings, I found an apartment in a safer neighborhood. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was clean, modern, and most importantly, safe for my unborn babies. It was a start, a new beginning for me. And I hope I don't regret it.

It was a three bedroom apartment, one room was for me, the other was for Gina and the last was for the babies. I liked the space. And for now, my kids will be fine.

Gina and I spent the next few days settling in, filling the space with all the essentials we needed to make the new apartment comfortable for us and my unborn babies… we got affordable furniture, a television set, a fridge, cribs, vitamins, baby clothes, and other baby essentials.

It wasn't much but I was proud of myself.

“I can’t believe this is happening,” I muttered, rubbing my belly as I looked around the apartment. Hard as it may be, I was doing it.

Gina flopped onto the couch. “Well, believe it, mama. You’re about to be a whole mom of three.”

I groaned. “Don’t remind me.” The sound of it was overwhelming. Last few months, I was a hustling artist looking for daily bread and today, I am about to become a mom of three, a single mom.. It's really overwhelming.

She smirked. “Oh, I will. Every single day. You’ll have to get used to it.”

I rolled my eyes but smiled. For the first time in weeks, I felt a little at peace and could breathe.

But that peace didn’t last long.

Because no matter how much I tried to move on with my life, one thought kept gnawing at me..

Kane Brown is the father of my babies.

And I had no idea what to do about it.

Kane’s POV

I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

That night had been… different.

I had been with women before, women who are prettier, sophisticated, charming, and well-to-do. But something about her still lingered in my mind. The way she looked at me. The way she had been so damn nervous yet so captivating at the same time.

So, I did what I always did when something or someone bothered me.

I had a background check done.

It didn’t take long for my assistant to pull up everything about her. Caroline Parker. Twenty-five. Struggling artist. Not much family, except for a best friend named Gina. Financially struggling. And no criminal record.

The more I read, the more I found myself intrigued. I didn't know why. The urge to reach out was too damn much. “How is this happening? What is this all about? It was just so crazy. Very crazy.

And before I could overthink it, I grabbed my phone and dialed the number I now had on file.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“…Hello?”

For a moment, I just listened to her soft voice. Although she was a little hesitant. I wondered why she acted like that as an artist who was still looking for a breakthrough. I shoved it off and introduced myself.

“It’s Kane.”

Then, there was silence before the act.

“Sorry, Kane from where?”

I knew she was just pretending. However, I smiled and gave her the satisfaction she wanted. “Kane from the art gallery. The man who bought all your paintings.”

She paused again.

Then, “How did you get my number?”

I smirked. “I have my ways.”

She didn’t say anything.

I leaned back in my chair. “I wanted to talk to you about something. An opportunity.”

“Opportunity?” she repeated, sounding cautious.

“I’m organizing a high-profile art exhibition. I want you to be part of it.”

She was silent again.

Then, came a sharp exhale. “Why?”

I wasn’t sure how to answer that. So, I settled for the truth.

“Because I liked your paintings. And I think the world should see them.”

Another pause. Then, her voice was now quieter. “Is this… about that night?”

“No,” I answered immediately. And I meant it. “This has nothing to do with that. This is about your art.”

She didn’t respond right away.

Finally, she said, “I’ll think about it.”

That was all I needed.

For now.

The ContractCaroline’s POV“You’re turning it down? Are you crazy?” Gina’s voice shot through the phone so loud I had to pull it away from my ear. I didn't know that she was even listening to my call. I sighed, rubbing my forehead. Gina can actually make me go crazy one day. “I didn’t say that.”“You didn’t have to,” she snapped. “Your tone says it all.”I rolled my eyes at her and flopped onto my bed, staring at the ceiling. “It’s complicated, Gina.”“What’s so complicated? He’s offering you a contract to showcase your paintings at one of the biggest art exhibitions in the city! Do you know how many people would kill for that opportunity? And you are throwing it away for what reason?”I groaned. “I know. But…”“But what?”“He doesn’t know. And I don't want him to know. Working with him would definitely expose my babies to him. I don't want him thinking that I am one of these street girls.”Gina took a long and deep breath. Then, “Doesn’t know what?” she asked, pretending not to know

Caroline’s POV“You’re glowing.”I rolled my eyes as I dropped my bag onto the couch. “Shut up, Gina.”She smirked, popping a grape into her mouth. “I’m just saying. You’ve been spending all this time with Mr. Billionaire lately. Are you sure this is just about the art?”I sighed, kicking off my shoes. “Yes, Gina. It’s about the art exhibition.”She hummed, clearly unconvinced. “So, you’re telling me there are no side glances? No accidental touches? No tension strong enough to cut with a knife?”I hesitated for half a second too long but not without smiling. Gina is such a crazy girl. She would want to bring out things from nowhere. Her eyes widened. “OH MY GOD!”I groaned. “Gina, please.”“Don’t ‘Gina, please’ me!” She pointed at me dramatically. “You hesitated! That means something is happening!”I grabbed a pillow and threw it at her. “Nothing is happening!”She caught it with ease. “Yet.”I ignored her, heading to the kitchen. “I’m starving. Did you eat all the leftover pasta?”“

The Big Question Caroline’s POVThe apartment was quiet when I walked inside. Too quiet. Gina was supposed to be back from work already. Where could she be? I hope she's okay. “Gina! Gina!! There was no answer. I pulled my phone out and called Gina’s number but there was no answer. I frowned, I tossed my bag onto the couch. “Gina?”Yet there was nothing. She's not in the house and she's not answering her calls. That was weird. Gina wasn’t the type to leave the door unlocked unless she was inside. And she definitely wasn’t the type to ignore me when I got home.A small knot of worry formed in my stomach. I walked around every room, checking the kitchen first. But she wasn't there.“Gina?” I called again, peeking into the guest bathroom. There was no sign of her.I checked the living room. The small dining area. Even the balcony.Hmmm…My heartbeat picked up. Where was she?Feeling uneasy, I walked toward her bedroom door. It was slightly open. If she wasn't there then I would defi

His piercing blue eyes locked on mine.My heart pounded so hard, I was scared he'd hear it.I forced a laugh, trying not to sound too obvious. “Pregnant? What? No! Of course not.”He just stood there, staring at me, as if he were trying to find the truth in my words.I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze.“You sure?” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Cause you've been sick a lot lately.” Damn it. He noticed.I forced a carefree shrug. “I’ve just been under a lot of stress. Between the exhibit and work… it's just overwhelming.”It wasn't entirely a lie. I was under a lot of stress, just not the kind he's thinking about. He studied me for a moment longer and then to my surprise he reached for his phone.“I'll have to call my private doctor to come by and check on you,” he said. “Just to be sure.”Oh No, I couldn't let that happen! If his doctor examined me, there would be no point hiding it.“No!” I b

Chapter 07:Caroline POVI walked into the gallery the next morning, determined to act normal. This time I wouldn't let Kane have a reason to suspect anything.Last night’s conversation with Gina kept replaying in my head. Kane would find out eventually. I knew that. But I'd make sure he didn't find out now. Not yet. It was still too soon.I took a deep breath and forced myself to focus. I had too much to deal with, especially since today was the exhibit setup. The gallery was full of people moving from one place to another. The final pieces were being arranged and the lightning crew were making last-minute arrangements.I grabbed my clipboard and did a quick check.Everything seemed to be going well until…CRASH!!Gasps echoed through the room and I felt like my heart had stopped.“No…no, no, no. Please, not today.”I turned around to see a sculpture, one of the most valuable pieces, lying on the floor in shattered fragments.Ohh God…. Why today?I panicked, rushing past the small

But my mind was only half on the art and the staff members moving around me.The exhibition was running smoothly, at least as smoothly as it could after that disaster earlier. The restoration team were handling the broken sculpture and the investor had been reassured. But at this point, I really didn't care about any of that.I was thinking about Caroline. She was hiding something. I had suspected it. And now I've confirmed it. The way she shrank under Carter's words wasn't like her.The woman I hired had fire in her. She wouldn't back down.Something was different.I reached for my phone and checked the message from my agent.>No medical reports. No hospital visits. I didn't even take time to think. I searched her bag quickly for her apartment key. And I had found it, I scooped her into my arms and rushed towards her apartment. The place was small and quiet. It smelled faintly of paint and something sweet. I barely registered it as I laid her carefully on the couch. “Caroline,” I tried again, brushing her hair back. There was no response. I could feel my pulse beating faster. What was wrong with her? Then something caught my eye. There was a small paper bag on the counter, prescription bottles half-spilling out. Painkillers. Supplements. And some medications I didn't recognize. This was my chance to gather some clues about what she was hiding. I hit myself immediately when the thought came in. What was I thinking? My gaze went back to the medications. I

Chapter 10:Kane's POVI arrived at the office earlier than usual. The moment I stepped inside, I told my assistant to send Caroline a notice to take the day off. She needed rest, whether she liked it or not. She was obviously sick even though she refused to tell me what exactly was going on with her. I sighed and pushed the thought away. I needed to focus.I pushed through the morning’s meeting, reviewing investors reports, giving approval for projects. Everything was my normal routine. At least it should have felt normal. But it didn't Something sat heavy in my chest, like an itch I couldn't scratch. A soft knock on my office door pulled me from my thoughts. My assistant, Mason, stepped in, holding a neatly sealed envelope. “Sir, I thought you'd want to see this.”I raised a brow as I took it from him. The letters on it were golden in color, giving it an elegant and artistic look. I opened it and glanced through the words. My grip on the envelope tightened as I read.Kelly

Chapter 46:Caroline’s POVI felt a chill run down my spine. The man's words echoed in my head. If necessary…So they would kill us if we didn't comply. There was no way Kane sent these men. He might be controlling and ruthless, but he would never endanger me. Not like this. Not when I was carrying his children. Before I could process another thought, one of them grabbed me, his grip tightened around my arm. I cried out, struggling, but it only made him hold me tighter.Across the room, Gina was putting up a fight of her own. She wasn’t going down quietly, she kicked, clawed, and cursed like a soldier in battle. But it wasn’t enough. One of the men slammed her against the wall, pinning her arms behind her.“No…. stop! Let her go!” I screamed, panic choking my voice.“Quiet,” the man growled.I thrashed, but their grip never loosened. They were strong. Trained. It had been a while since I listened to any music, I had avoided it for years.Anytime I listened to music, it only meant I was about to do something serious. Apparently whenever I listened to music, I usually had the best performances and I never really needed to use my full abilities to get what I want. But now…. I was dealing with Kelly. I picked up the earpod case, popped one into my ear, opened my playlist then pressed ‘In the Heights the musical.’I opened the door and met my assistant waiting beside my car. Mr. Reynolds holstered his gun. “Don't you dare show bias to anyone, not even my own offspring.” “Uhh, yes sir.” The examiner replied, nervously. Mr. Reynolds glanced at me then started walking away. “Train him. Even if it means breaking him.”They thought I couldn't hear them. But I didn’t realize you were still around.”“Oh, I never left,” she replied smoothly. “I just stopped being visible. Makes it easier to watch people like you work.”I straightened. “Well, unless you’ve bumped into me to offer skincare tips or borrow a lighter, I’m not sure what this is about.”Diane stepped closer, eyes narrowed. “Don’t play coy, Gina. But puppets tend to tangle… and when they do, they break.”There was a silence between us so thick you could cut it with a diamond.I recovered with a slow, cold smile. “If you’ve got something to say, say it. When I got in, I went to the receptionist desk. “Excuse me, I think I left my car key here.” I asked, politely.“Do you mean this?” A familiar voice came from behind me, followed by the sound of jingling keys. I turned around to see Gina standing behind me, holding out the SUV keys like they belonged to her.I smiled and reached out for it but Gina pulled away.“What are you thinking?” she said, giving me a stern look. I sighed, placing a hand over my forehead. “I want to go after her.”“And do what?”The question stung more than I expected it to. What exactly was I going to do? I didn't have a plan, I was just rushing in thinking she would accept me like she used to.

I couldn't believe that I was the one worried about some result. Then he looked up and smiled. “Mr Kane Brown, the results show that your DNA matches the paternity test 99.9%, you're definitely the real father.”Caroline heaved a huge sigh. I turned to her expecting her to say something. But she didn't even look in my direction. I was the father of unborn triplets and I had broken their mother with my own words.I felt the whole world collapse around me. I didn't know whether I should be excited or worried.I felt like a sailor lost in the sea of decisions.Excited about the fact I was becoming a father or worried about the fact that Caroline might never want my children to have anything to do with me. I had refused at first but he kept on insisting.I knew the only reason he insisted was because he thought I'd go ahead of him to change the results. And now he was purposely being late in hopes that he wouldn't find me home and then place the blame of framery on me when the tests came out positive.I wasn't smart but I wasn't so dumb that I wouldn't notice his motives. Then the sound of a car honking brought me back from my thoughts.“Speak of the devil” I thought to myself.
