Chapter 2: Shocking Revelation

I stared at the one person I never expected would snitch on me with shock. I stared at my aunt in shock, unable to believe what I was seeing.

I thought I might be dreaming; everything felt like a dream, and I prayed so hard to wake up from such a horrible dream if I was really dreaming. Because there’s no way Sofia, my aunt is the reason Derek divorced me.

There’s no way Sofia, my Aunt, could betray me this badly and date Derek behind my back. Everything was just a great shock to me.

“Surprised?” Derek’s sudden question snatched me back to reality, and that was when it began to settle in: I wasn’t dreaming; this is reality, and it’s truly playing out in front of me.

My aunt, and my only one family left, really betrayed me. I could feel tears clouding my eyes as I stared at my aunt making silly faces at me.

“Surprised?” her voice resounded in my ears. I battled my eyes as I tried to fight back the tears, but it was impossible to do so; I let them flow freely.

“Isn’t this just the best birthday present?” Sofia laughed and leaned to kiss Derek right in front of me. “We really planned this well, didn’t we?” she chuckled and kissed him further.

I could feel my heart shattering into thousands of pieces as I watched them kiss shamelessly in front of me.

She soon withdrew from the kiss and approached me. “Ouch!” she giggled. “You look so good when you’re in tears,” she continued, an evil grin playing on her lips. As she mocked me, everything started becoming clear.

I suddenly remembered when I called her earlier this morning, inviting her to my birthday celebration, and she lied to me, saying she was having terrible period cramps and couldn’t make it.

“Oh, I know what’s going through your mind. How can someone who had terrible period cramps be here?” she chuckled, as if reading my mind.

“Well, I guess you figured it out yourself. I was just trying to avoid a lowlife,” she spat.

“You don’t know how much I hate you, Rose,” she continued, but this time around, there was a hint of pain in her voice.

“I hate you so much because you stole everything from me. You always act like you are better than me; you are always lucky and carry yourself with so much pride.

“But hey! The table is turned, and you are the one at my mercy now,” she laughed out hard, without ceasing any opportunity to glare at me.

I stared at her, mesmerized by her words. This was someone I literally helped with everything: I helped her with accommodation, a job, and everything I ever had, since she is my only family member I know.

I made sure she never lacked. I could go as far as going out of my way just to make her feel better, and never did I know she held so much hatred for me, just because I am luckier than her?

“How could you, Sofia?” I questioned, as rage began burning in me. “Is this the reason you did this to me?” I snapped, my once sad eyes already red with fury.

“I loved you, Sofia. I made sure you were comfortable, and what did I get in return? Betrayal and hatred,” I lashed.

“Oh, spare me that, Rose. If you loved me that much, why didn’t you give me your good luck? You made me feed from your remains, and you called that love? You never loved me, so stop pretending,” Sofia lashed back at me, her eyes filled with fury.

“Now you will go back to the street you belong and never bother my life anymore,” she chuckled.

I watched her as she spoke, and in each passing moment, my heart shattered further.

“You were like a sister to me, Sofia; I trusted you,” my pain deepened as I said these words.

“You should never have done this to me, Sofia. We were sisters and family,” my eyes were already spinning from excessive tears. I have never been this pained all my life; I have never been this betrayed and ridiculed.

As I cried, I hoped one of them would tap me and tell me that this is just a joke. I wished they would laugh out loud and apologize for pulling my legs so badly.

I wished they would hug me and tell me they love me, but the looks on their faces were far from what I expected.

For the only thing I could see on their faces was hatred – hatred for me. Especially in Sofia’s face. I was certain that if she was given a knife, she wouldn’t think twice before tearing me apart.

Her previous words were evidence of how much she hates me, and for what? For jealousy?

And as I thought of this, I wondered why she didn’t show her jealousy all the while, she would have just opened up and told me how much she hated me, because she feels I am out shinning her.

She would have told me how she thinks she feeds on my remains, she would have told me how much she hated the fact that I go out of my way to always help her.

She would have told me how she considers me as a demon, even after everything I have done for her. Why did he had to pretend she loved me in front of me? Why did she have to act like I was the best thing in her life? Why did she make me feel she appreciates my every effort, just for her to betray me this much at the end.

As I sat on the ship, my vision blurred from excessive tears, I could still see them mutter some unheard words. I wasn’t certain of what they were saying, but my instinct was certain it was nothing good. The looks on their faces were enough testament. But I was to tired to say anything or make a move.

Sofia, who was once whispering something into Derek’s ears, withdrew and began taking bold steps towards me, with a sinister laughter on her face.

In each step she took towards me, I could feel my heartbeats increasing for a reason I knew nothing about.

Standing only an inch apart from me, she bent to my level. She leaned closer and brushed my hair backwards.

As her hands came in contact with my face, I shoved them off angrily and backed away from her. “Never lay your dirty hands on me again,” I said in anger, as emotions flooded in.

“Oh, come on! Stop barking, angry dog,” she chuckled, not moved by my action. She seemed to be enjoying the pain she is inflicting on me.

“Come, baby, let’s send her to hell already; she annoys me.” Her smiley face was suddenly replaced with rage, and my heart skipped a beat as I made meaning of her words.

“What do you mean by sending me to hell?” I stammered, fear creeping into my veins like ice as I watched Derek’s menacing figure loom closer.

I was now 100% sure that they were not up to something good, but I was still too paralyzed with fear to figure out what they were up to.

“Shall we?” Derek’s voice was laced with malice as he turned to Sofia, his eyes glinting with a sinister intent. Sofia’s polite nod sent a chill down my spine. “Of course,” she purred, her voice dripping with malevolence.

Before I could even process what was happening, they pounced on me, their hands closing around my wrists and ankles like vice grips. I struggled and kicked, but they were too strong. They dragged me to the cliff of the ship, the wind whipping my hair into a frenzy as I screamed and begged for mercy.

It was then that I saw the river below, its dark waters churning and foaming like a living thing. I knew then that they intended to throw me into its depths, to silence me forever.

My heart racing with terror, I screamed again, but my cries were drowned out by the sound of the wind and the waves.

“No! You can’t…” I tried to plead, but my voice was cut off as they lifted me up, my body suspended in mid-air. For a moment, I hung there, my eyes locked on Derek’s twisted face.

Then, with a sudden jerk, they let me go, and I plummeted into the darkness below.
