View MoreCHAPTER FIVEGrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! That was the alarm clock. Ava reached for it blindly and punched it off. She pulled the duvet past her stomach as she sat up and wiped her eyes sore. She walked into the toilet where she urinated, washed her face, and came out again. The alarm clock which was in the drawer close to her bed gave her a beautiful memory. The alarm clock was her twenty-sixth birthday gift. It reminded her of her mom’s elder sister; Aunt Caroline, her favorite relative. She remembered how she had left her home in Puerto Rico and traveled down just to see her after she had been admitted to the hospital. Aunt Caroline had never left her side until the last day she was discharged. They were so close that Ava felt comfortable enough to share a terrible experience with her; her rape story, something she hadn’t told anyone. She stood still staring into space and smiling at nothing. She would comb her silky hair with her hands as she paced about trying to g
CHAPTER FOURShe tried to leave the hospital premises so many times all to no avail. The next day, she was sitting on the bed facing the window side. Her heart was palpitating, ‘what if Max is aware that I am here? That’ll be an easy finish-off, right? What if he is searching for me? When I get discharged, how safe would I be outside there? What if I get the police involved? Would they see me as an accomplice?’ She hadn’t even touched her food. She picked a small mirror on the table and stared at her reflection. There were several cuts on her lips and a part of her lower lip was swollen. She also got a black eye too and it was shut halfway. There were some brown patches here and there on her face. Her once beautiful face had been ruined, ‘all thanks to the so-called love of her life. All she wanted was just to leave but she was scared she might be put under surveillance if she tried to do so again.“A penny for your thoughts.”
CHAPTER THREERaquel pushed the door open and banged it loudly after her. She made for the drawer close to the bed, opened and closed it. She went to the wardrobe, opened it, and shut it back again. Her face was red with anger. She murmured as she roamed the room. Noah didn’t raise his face; his eyes were focused on the computer and he was absentmindedly punching the keys noisily. This very act was getting Raquel more and more infuriated. Her action was getting the room all heated up but Noah seemed not to care. At last, he turned to look at her, “why are you acting like a crazy woman? Can’t you see I’m trying to work? Can’t I have peace at least? What the hell is your problem?” he combed his hair with his fingers, trying so hard not to overreact.“You can’t be at peace when I’m not at peace either.” Raquel blurted. Noah seemed not to be ready for an argument, so he stood up to leave.
CHAPTER TWOGrowing up wasn’t quite glamorous or exciting for Ava, she had a father who was very strict and often abusive and a mother who was just the opposite. She was loving, caring, patient, and understanding. She had other siblings who were all male. Childhood wasn’t all fun-filled though she had a fair share of it, thank God for next-door relatives. She grew up in Tuscarawas and went to one of the central schools and then, an Eastern University campus in Cleaveland. Her dad wanted her to study law but deep down, she didn’t want that. She had an interest in the creative industry but unfortunately, no one was keying into her dreams. She wanted more than just appearing in a courtroom to defend or file a case or work in a chamber. She had eyes for fashion and she loved to write too. One day, she had come back home to show her dad a one-paged article she had written on greeting but he didn’t quite appreciate it and he made her feel she w

She had had a hectic day and all she dreamt of was a good bath, a good meal, and a good sleep. It was already past 7 P.M. and thankfully the next day was Saturday. She had drifted to sleep a little bit before her phone rang. After blindly rummaging through her handbag for a while without finding anything, she sat up and carried out a proper search but by the time she found the phone, the call had ended. She stared at the foreign number that had called her for a while, trying to ascertain who it was. She put the phone on the table and started undressing. Then she walked into the bathroom and had a bath. She wanted to check her messages but hunger was deeply panging into her stomach. "What’s up for dinner? Biscuits an
