She looked at me lingeringly, and once again, I held back from doing something I would regret later. I needed Ryan to resolve that issue as quickly as possible, I thought, given the maid's delay in following my simple command.

"I believe you are aware that Mr. Davis personally took the girl to her address last night," she said.

That information caught me completely off guard, and it burned in my chest in a way I had never felt before, unable to explain what I was feeling in response to that revelation.

"And?" I asked.

"Just that, sir," she spoke, intimidated by my response.

"I believe there's more to say," I pressed.

"No, sir. That's it," she replied, now sounding embarrassed. "I just thought you should know."

"And why did you assume that I wouldn't be aware of the fact?" I wanted to know what she intended with that.

"Mr. Davis has never been responsible for accompanying your guests to their homes before. So, I just... found it strange," the more she spoke, the more her voice fad
