Miguel's POV

I sat at my reading table, resting my head on my elbow and staring into space. My mind was cluttered.

Three days had passed since Ava went missing, and there was still no sign of her anywhere.

My men had searched the whole city and checked all the surveillance cameras but they had yet to find a trace of her which was very s.

It was almost like she had vanished into thin air, and sometimes I was almost certain I wouldn't ever see her again.

Where could she be?

It was the same question I asked myself day and night.

Where could she have gone? It just didn't make any sense that she was gone like that.

I couldn't believe or accept that I would never find her despite how slim the chances were.

I made sure my men were still looking for her while Perez was working on finding who the traitor was that released her in the first place.

So far there was still no news on both —I didn't know where she was or who had released her but I wasn't going to give up.

Ava was that importa

Ava's POVMy eyes flickered open moments later, and a groan escaped my lips, accompanied by a scrunch of my nose at the persistent stench. No matter how many times I found myself in this situation, I never seemed to get used to it and I prayed for darkness to consume me once again.Unfortunately, the bliss of unconsciousness hadn't embraced me yet; it lingered just out of reach, a cruel tease.I dangled on the precipice of awareness, my grip slipping like a fraying thread. The room swayed, and a dull ache pulsed through my head, blurring the edges of my surroundings. Each breath became a burdensome endeavor, and a relentless wave of dizziness engulfed me. I clutched at my chest, a feeble attempt to steady the erratic beats of my heart."Fifty, fifty-one, fifty-two, fifty-three," I mumbled in a weak voice, counting as if the numbers could anchor me to reality. Draped on the cold ground, I fought to regain control, but it was slipping away like grains of sand through desperate fing

Miguel's POVThe past few hours that followed after I brought Ava to the hospital were very long and draining. The doctor passed a few drips into her and administered a sedative to help her rest so she could regain her strength.According to him, it would take a day or two before she woke up, and during that time, she mustn't be disturbed. I sat by Ava's bedside throughout the evening, watching her sleep and making sure she was comfortable enough. I stuck by her side the entire day until the next morning.I couldn't leave her side. I didn't want to, not after what happened to her the last time I left her alone. The guilt clawed its way to my stomach, and It just sat there filling me with undiluted rage over what happened to Ava. I felt responsible for it.It was all my fault. If I hadn't been stupid enough to have entrusted Ava with that bitch, Vivian, then this wouldn't have happened. Ava wouldn't have ended up here like this. I was filled with so much regret, replaying the mome

Ava's POVI woke up a few hours later, sat up, and found Miguel asleep beside me. He was still here. I almost couldn't believe it. This felt weird in ways beyond which words could convey, and yet I was in some way glad to see him still here. I sighed. It was strange. He was strange. I meant it when I said he was really acting differently. There was something odd about him, he was just —soft. He also smiled at me earlier which was weird and I hated how my stomach kept twisting whenever he was close. And that fear —that worried look in his eyes when he found me, dying in the room. Fuck! It was fucking with my head. Why was he so concerned? Why? I couldn't understand it, or him. Why was he acting like he cared about me?Was it because he was obsessed with finding Fernando? Was he scared that if I died he'd lose the chance to use me against Fernando? It had to be that, right? And yet, that look in his eyes felt truly genuine —like he really cared about me. The look was somewhat h

Ava's POVThe next morning I woke up with a jerk with tears rolling down my face as my heart burned in my chest with the memories of my nightmare. What have I been doing? I needed to leave!Tears ran down my cheeks as the nightmare lingered in my mind, and I was filled with sudden grief. It was the memory of the day of my wedding —the day I watched Fernando get killed. Oh God! I hadn't thought of him in a while, and I was just —Overwhelmed. It was like I had forgotten what had happened, and now it just hit me all over again with as much intensity as the day it happened. The pain felt brand new and damn it hurt. It felt like a knife had stabbed me in the chest.I swirled my head to my side, and was relieved to find it empty. Miguel wasn't there. He wasn't in the room. I didn't even bother to think about where he had gone. The room was bright. It was around seven in the morning, and my heart ached terribly.I buried my face into my palm letting the pain suck me in as thoughts of

Ava really wanted to escape. She didn't know Molly was one of us.I thought things had changed between us. I thought her attempt to run away would stop from now on. I thought we were closer.I was wrong. Sadly. It hurt a lot. I read her wrong this whole time, thinking we were connecting. It was nothing to her. It meant nothing and it changed nothing.Rage rushed through my veins, betrayal, disappointment... every single emotion that came to mind. It fueled me. "Leave us, Molly," I said to the nurse, and she took one last look at Ava before making her way out of the room.Once we were alone, Ava looked at me. Her gaze was raw, digging through my cold heart. Miguel's POVI slammed the door hard on my way out and took a long stroll around the hospital to cool down my anger and the pressure in my pants. It was frustrating how much I wanted to smash into her. How my heart ached through the pain she had caused, yet my body craved madly for her."Puttana!" I cursed under my breath. She was nothing but a whore that went around messing up with people and I was going to deal with her.If I had stayed in that room I was certain I'd lose my temper and take her.I still couldn't believe that Ava had tried to escape like that after everything. It was sad, and I was hurt —really hurt. When I returned to her room sometime in the evening she was in bed but awake. "Time to go," I announced at the entrance with Perez standing beside me."Evening, Ava," Perez greeted her with a warm smile which Ava barely managed to return as she mumbled a tired—"Evening," she climbed out of bed, and Perez approached the bed, handing her a small bag. Miguel's POVThe deafening echo of the gunshot reverberated through the room, shattering the tense silence. Vivian's lifeless body crumpled beside Lewis —she was dead.I swirled my head to Ava as I lowered my gun. She still had her gun clutched in her palm with a stunned look on her face as she lowered the pistol. His work was done, and I felt glad. Although, I would have felt more glad if Ava had been the one to pull the trigger on Vivian instead of me. But that plan had turned out to be an epic failure and also a punch in my guts, seeing how things turned out.My feet stopped before hers, and I looked into her eyes, anger swirling inside of me. I clenched my jaw tightly as I spoke, "You didn't think I'd be dumb enough to actually give you a loaded gun. Did you?"

Miguel's POVPerez's absurd question rang through my ears, and it was like someone suddenly stepped on the brake pedal in my head. My mind stopped.I practically froze in my seat for a second before glancing over at Perez. He had a wild look on his face with his brows still raised in expectation of an answer to his ridiculous question.I swallowed, looking at him with all seriousness. "You can't be serious," I cocked my head but his expression didn't change. He looked serious."You have lost your mind," I scoffed, and a burst of uncontrollable laughter erupted from me.Me? in love with Ava? The question sounded so stupid to me that I couldn't even find the right response to give him. I held his gaze and shook my head as the ridiculous question echoed in my mind and the more it echoed in my head, for some reason it became vexing.I sipped my drink, lowering it to the counter, and mimicking Perez."Are you falling in love with Ava?" I hissed, "What a joke! How can I fall in love with

Ava's POV Miguel was there, sleeping peacefully with Mary Grace cuddled into his side.My heart felt hurt and I wished for just one second I could turn back the hands of time —just to make myself worthy again. But all of those were just wishes.I couldn't risk another moment around them for fear of causing them more problems. It was clear that I was the secret ingredient for trouble. And for the people I loved to be safe, I had to be far from them.I scooped Mary Grace from her bed quietly not wanting to wake Miguel. I kissed her forehead, tears gathering in my eyes as I whispered. “I love you, sweetie, and I'll always be here. I'll always be watching you like a hawk but for now, mama has to go,” I pressed my lips to her head again, and again.“I'm going to miss you, darling, but don't worry you're in safe hands. Your dad will take good care of you,” I squeezed her in my arms and then finally laid her in the crib, not wanting to risk waking Miguel up by dropping her by his side as s

Ava's POV A gun rolled to the entrance of the cockpit and I only hesitated for a second before handing Mary Grace to Gracie. I knew what I had to do.I walked over to the door and picked it up as Lino stretched out his gun to Miguel. I stood behind them but none of them noticed my appearance in the room. The weapon was heavy but that didn't matter much. It was now or never, and I had to make a quick choice —a scary one but I didn't have much of a choice. I had never fired a gun in my life until this moment. But I had to do it, our lives depended on it.I focused my vision on him and the gun went off in my trembling hands.Lino's body dropped to the ground with a loud thud.If I had been just a second late he would have killed Miguel. Miguel's POVI raked a hand through my hair, listening to Perez fill me in about what happened at the hospital, and the men he had lost in the van explosion on their way here.Bastardo! My blood stirred.“Those were good men,” I mumbled, reeling in the loss as I ground my teeth and clenched my fist, “Lino. That scumbag,” I cursed, fuming inside.“I have everyone looking for him, and Mason. Perhaps he could lead us to him—”The sudden sound of the engine roaring to life echoed from behind us, and my head swirled to the Jet which was getting ready to take off. What the hell? I thought. Stunned.I creased a brow at the unbelievable sight before me. I could hardly believe it. I had no clue what was going on but that Jet was definitely not supposed to take off without an order from me.I couldn't understand it but Ava and my kids were in there, and that was all that mattered.Instantly, I sprinted towards the Jet, and Perez joined me as we raced to the aircraft. Ava's POVI bolted upright, my heart pounding against my chest as though it was trying to rip itself out of my body. I was anxious. No. More than that I felt unsettled and for no reason too. I just had this bad feeling in my gut that I couldn't quite shake. Something felt very wrong but I didn't know what it was.I sat up in bed, staring into the darkness with the only source of light being the moonlight spilling in through the window. The air in the room felt heavy, suffocating, as if laden with an ominous foreboding that I couldn't quite place, and the uneasiness tightened in the pit of my stomach. I suddenly felt stuffy and needed some air.I slipped out of bed and glanced over my baby’s crib to see if I had woken her. I hadn't. Mary Grace was still sound asleep.I sighed with relief and made my way to the door. I stumbled towards the door, but my heart jumped again as I heard the sudden sounds of hurried footsteps. My stomach tightened and I pushed the door open gently, peeking

Miguel's POVLino was alive? That couldn't be.I had set the place on fire. I had watched it burn. It had to be a lie. Nando was definitely lying. I glanced at him, “You're lying,” I said.“I'm not!” He yelled with desperation in his voice and words, “I swear it. Mason is involved. I can prove it. Where is he?” I hesitated and turned to one of my men, “Where is Mason?” I asked, right in front of Nando. The man shook his head, “I haven't seen him all day. None of us have,” he responded. The words echoed in my head, and Nando's voice echoed beside me, “He knows... he knows you're onto him, and he's made a run for it.”Nando’s words made sense, and my mind was starting to churn with all sorts of thoughts. There had been something off about Mason since we caught Nando— maybe even since Lino.He hadn't come down to the cell for once, and I had barely seen him. It was almost like he had been hiding away all this time, and I just never really noticed.Everything was starting to align in my

Ava’s POVIt was midday, and Gracie helped me with a napkin to wipe the breast milk that spilled down Mary Grace’s clothes while I was breastfeeding her. I wiped it, cleaned her face too, before lowering my shirt.I pulled her to my chest and cradled my precious baby in my arms as I began to hum a gentle lullaby. Miguel’s favourite one and I hoped it would one day be her favourite one too.The melody flowed from my lips like a soothing river, wrapping us in its tender embrace like a blanket and its effect was tremendous on my baby. Mary Grace fell straight to sleep with her palm clutched tightly around my finger. I noticed she loved to do that, and I loved the feel of her palm around my finger. It was warm, and it made me feel a tremendous amount of peace. I rocked her back and forth, with the rhythm of the lullaby, and Gracie grinned beside me, wrapping one hand around my arm while caressing Mary Grace with the other, although she let her be the minute she was asleep so she wouldn't

Perez smiled, “He's more than earned it,” he remarked, “Care for a drink?” he gestured, raising the bottle for a second before going on to pour himself a glass.“Sure. I haven't had one in a while,” I motioned towards him, taking notice of the room. “Where's Mason?” I asked after a minute of not spotting him anywhere around the room. “I’m not sure but he should be outside,” he said, and offered me a glass of scotch. I gulped it all at once and lowered the glass to the table.“Any lead for the antidote yet?” He asked.I shook my head, “Not yet,” I paused, “But I was thinking, per
