Chapter 1: Till Death Do Us Part

Ava's POV

Chicago~

It was my wedding day.

A small gasp escaped my lips as I stood before the trenched mirror, trailing my fingers down my wedding dress in awe. The sight set before me was nothing short of elegant, and I could already imagine Fernando's gaze fixing on me—the way his eyes would light up.

He would be breathless.

I was sure of it. The simple thought of that made me even more eager now, and a blush crept up my cheeks.

I took a more detailed look at my dress, unable to take my eyes off it.

Gosh, it was perfect.

The fabric was a blend of satin and lace with nude net sleeves, which covered the entirety of my arm with sheer elegance and beauty. The dress was firm and fitted, hugging its way down to my hips pleasantly before releasing its hold and easing its way down my heels.

I twirled before the mirror over and over again, raising my dress. I ignored the gentle giggles of my dresser and make-up artist, who were standing behind me, gazing at me.

The door clicked open a second later, and I instantly swirled my head to the side to see who had come in.

"Aunt Mary," I called as she walked into the room, grinning. "You made it."

Aunt Mary stopped in her tracks the minute her gaze fell on me, and her jaw dropped open, "OH MY!" She exclaimed, coming closer with wide eyes. "Ava, my gosh. You look…." she trailed off, her eyes glittering.

"You look perfect, Ava," she continued, reaching a palm to my cheek as she stood before me.

Her eyes had begun to water already, "You're the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. Fernando won't know what hit him today."

I laughed, "Thanks, Aunt Mary," I mumbled, grinning broadly. "I'm so glad you made it."

"Of course I did. I wouldn't miss your wedding for anything. In fact, I told my boss that I'd quit if he didn't give me a leave of absence today."

"No, you didn't," I shook my head.

"Oh, trust me, honey, I did. I wasn't about to let anything keep me from attending."

"Oh! Aunt Mary. I'm so glad you're here."

"Me too," she glared. "You're so pretty, Ava. Seeing in this dress just…." she cupped my cheeks, a tear rolling down her face, "I wish your parents could see you right now."

Aunt Mary had raised me on her own after the death of my parents. She was all the family I had in this world, and she meant the world to me.

"My sister would have been so proud," she added with a sniff, and I could feel the sting in the back of my eyes at the mention of my parents.

I didn't want to cry.

I had spent a huge amount of my childhood doing that, and growing up, I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't do that anymore.

Especially not today.

Today was the happiest day of my life. So, no crying. I wasn't going to let anything ruin today for me.

It had to be perfect.

"Oh, come on, Aunt Mary. No crying at my wedding, please. You don't want me to ruin my makeup and look like a ghost at the altar, do you?" I joked, forcing a laugh. "Mom wouldn't like that," I said, widening my gaze to prevent a tear from slipping out.

She sniffed, wiping the tears from her face and hugging me. "I'm sorry," she mumbled and released me from her grip almost instantly, "You're just so beautiful," she grinned, "I'm so proud of you, Ava."

"Thanks, Aunt. It means a lot to hear you say that."

The door clicked open again, and Sophie, my maid of honor and best friend, walked into the room, wearing a huge grin as her eyes fell on me.

"Wow!" she exclaimed, "You look amazing," she complimented.

"Thanks, Soph," I said dramatically, beaming at the sight of her.

"It's time. Are you ready to go?" she asked, and I turned to my Aunt Mary, suddenly feeling a stir in my stomach. I was nervous.

She seemed to sense my anxiety as she smiled and said, "It's normal to get a little anxious before the wedding. You'll be okay," she placed a hand on my shoulder. "I'll be out there."

I exhaled with a nod, "I'll see you after," I replied as she left the room.

I grabbed the bouquet from the table and took one last look in the mirror before leaving the room. My heart thumped in my chest—a blend of excitement and anxiety tangled up in my stomach.

We got to the entrance of the hall in no time, and I took a long, deep breath, moving more slowly now.

The scent of flowers filled the grand hall as I walked. Its high ceilings were embellished with chandeliers that cast a warm, soft glow over the room.

The walls were draped in sheer ivory fabric, and rows of polished wooden chairs were neatly arranged, facing an intricately designed altar.

The gazes of familiar and unfamiliar faces fell on me, and the soft, harmonious music echoed in the background, aligning with each step I took.

The path to the altar was lined with red roses leading all the way to him—Fernando, the love of my life.

His eyes twinkled as they fixed on me, and I could see the delight on his face.

This moment was perfect, just like I had always imagined, and after tonight, I would be his forever.

The distance closed, and finally, I stood before him.

"You look stunning," he said, sounding almost as breathless as I imagined. "I think I might want to marry you more than once," he said, and I blushed.

"You're silly," I mouthed, feeling slightly shy before him.

He rolled his eyes, "I'm anything for you, Ava. Anything," he emphasized, stepping closer to me.

That was Fernando. He was charming as always, and no one in the world made me happier than him.

"Me too," I mumbled with a smile.

"Beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate the union…" the priest started as he stepped closer to us, and my heart thumped more steadily now. Fernando didn't take his eyes off me the entire time, and neither did I.

"Avaline Richards, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?" the priest asked, and Fernando's grin widened.

I looked at my Aunt in the front row, grinning at me proudly. Everyone looked so joyful.

I swirled my head back to Fernando, nodding, I opened my mouth to speak, "I—"

Before the words could leave my lips, the deafening sound of a gunshot went off, then multiple shots, causing an immediate uproar as screams echoed through the room.

Fernando fell to the floor first, taking a straight hit, and the bouquet in my hand slipped from my grasp to the floor.

"Fernando," I screamed, shock holding me to the spot.

The sudden chaos and fear gripped the room as people screamed and scrambled for cover as the shot continued to echo across the room.

I instinctively dove to the ground, my heart pounding in my chest.

The sight of Fernando on the floor, bleeding out, filled me with shock and dread.

My eyes darted to the congregation, and the gruesome sight of bodies on the ground filled me with horrors.

My heart thumped aggressively.

"Ava!" Aunt Mary yelled, running toward me when another shot echoed through the hall, and her body dropped to the floor instantly.

"No! Aunt Mary!" I yelled, tears pooling down my face as I watched her body lay lifeless on the floor.

I couldn't move a muscle. Fear had me pinned to the floor like a rock holding down a helpless piece of paper.

The tears were never-ending as they streamed down my face, and my chest constricted with so much pain.

The wails of despair filled the air, thick like a fog. Amidst the chaos, a muscular figure marched down to me with a pistol clutched in his grasp.

The closer he got to me, the more aggressively my body trembled.

His presence was something almost demonic. His eyes were ice cold.

His feet stopped dead before me, and he stretched down the gun to me, his gaze fixed on me relentlessly.

This was it. My end.

He lowered the pistol. "It would be a waste to kill a beauty such as you. I think I have better plans for you," he said in a cold, gruff voice that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Niko," someone called from behind him. "The cops are getting closer. We have to go now."

"I am not leaving without this beauty," he whispered and I felt my blood run dry.

He turned to me and slammed the back of the pistol against my head.

Everything turned dark.

Chapter 2: I sold Her
Miguel's POVNaples, Italy~I sat in the backseat of the black sedan, smoking a cigar and sitting through the traffic. I exhaled, veering my gaze to the window and watching the busy road thoughtlessly. The streets of Naples were even busier today than usual, and the ride home was taking a lot longer than it should. The exhaustion of the day was beginning to kick in, and I couldn't wait to finally let off some steam with one of my whores back home. Today had been quite a long one, and I deserved the rest. Some good news would do. It was about time.I smirked, raising my wrist and stealing a glance at my watch. Niko should be back by now with news of his mission. It should be done. It was almost a day, and I was eager to know the fate of that bastard. Of course, I didn't have to wonder how it went. It was Niko. He simply never failed in the execution of any order. He was perfect. The best man for getting rid of weeds. But still, I was curious about one thing. I wanted to know how muc

Chapter 3: The Auction House
Ava's POVA light twinkled in the room. My eyes flickered open and close. Sweat gathered on my forehead. Brows quivered aggressively...I swerved my head from left to right as the gruesome memory came back to me. "Avaline Richards, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"My heart swelled with joy, and the words sat on the tip of my tongue, ready to be deployed, "I—"The gunshot exploded across the room. Multiple shots followed the first, echoing through the wedding hall. Fernando's body was the first to drop to the ground, and my feet stood rooted to in place as the shock began to sink in. The loud wailings resonated from the gathering, and I swirled my head to them, watching the people run around to save themselves as shots were continuously fired."Ava!" Aunt Mary yelled from amidst the crowd, running toward me. I couldn't get my muscles to move as I watched her helplessly close the distance between us. She was so close, and then—Another deafening shot echoed

Chapter 4: She will be Mine
Miguel's POVThirty minutes earlier~"Bastardo!" I roared as my anger aggravated, "Who did you sell her to?" I asked, clenching my jaw tightly. I was unnerved.Niko shrunk on the ground, trembling with fright. He was looking paler by the minute. He had lost too much blood already, and the rug was clearly soaked but I cared less."Sophia," he mumbled weakly. "She plans to sell her at the auction tonight."I glanced at my watch, then back at him, "What time is the auction?"His eyes darted around the room for a clock, and then he replied, "It starts in thirty minutes. I think you still have a chance."I smirked, walking over to where he was and I leaned toward him. "You better hope I do. If I lose her, then consider yourself dead meat," I said, straightening up, and walking up to Perez."I'll retrieve the girl. Stay with him and don't let him leave until you get word from me to do otherwise," I ordered strictly.Perez nodded, "You got it, boss. Should I get him a doctor?" he asked, and

Chapter 5: Hating the Devil
Ava's POV As my voice echoed in the room, he made a slow turn and faced me blankly. Until now, I hadn't spoken those words out loud, and the gravity that followed those words seemed to crash all over me like waves on a beach. I wanted to cry. I wanted to cry so much until there were no tears left to shed.Tears streamed down my face, and the grief seemed to claw its way up my throat, choking me as more rolled down my face. My chest burned aggressively as the pain sliced through me like a knife. It had been hours since the incident—hours. An elongated amount of time of which I hadn't had the chance to process any of this yet. Fernando and my Aunt had died, and I hadn't had a grieving moment yet. Everything was overwhelming and so hard to believe.I still couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it, and yet here I was, "Fernando was killed at our wedding," I added in a croaked voice, and the words didn't even seem to faze him as he glared at me blankly."I know he was shot, Av

Chapter 6: The Escape
Ava's POV I heard the lock click as the door slammed shut behind him but I didn't look. I felt glued to the bed, pinned by grief and my overall situation. The sound of his receding footstep grew fainter by the second, and after a few minutes had casually swung by, there was nothing to hear but dreadful silence. It was deafening, and for a while, I just laid on the bed, staring at the white ceiling and feeling the crumbled pieces of my life collapse upon me. It was heavy. The truth of my situation was heavy as everything that had happened over the last few hours slowly dawned on me.Hot tears trickled down the sides of my face. It was warm and a bit soothing. I didn't blink. I didn't move. I just laid there, crying quietly —grieving. I replayed the shoot-out at the wedding in my head. The memory of Fernando's body taking a hit and falling to the ground flashed before my eyes. The horror of the moment seeped into me gradually —the oscillation from happiness to despair was one I wa

Chapter 7: Wild Thoughts
Miguel's POVAfter I left Ava's room, I swung by the study to see if Perez was still there with Niko. I doubted they'd still be there, considering how bad Niko's condition was when I left. He probably needed more than a doctor. Perez should have taken him to the hospital to treat his wounds by now, but who knew? Sometimes, that guy took my orders a little too seriously. I grinned, squeezing the doorknob and walking into the study.Perez was seated before my desk when I walked in, "You're back," he declared.I looked at the couch —it was still stained with blood, but Niko was gone. "The doctor said he needed a blood transfusion and admitted him to the hospital," he explained, following my gaze on the couch."That's good," I nodded and made my way to the bar, helping myself to some brandy, "Want a glass?" I quizzed, veering my head to Perez. He nodded briskly and then asked, "So, how did it go with the girl? Did you find her?"I poured him a glass and took it to him, taking my seat b

Chapter 8: Is this a Rescue?
Ava's POVI ran around the garden with as much speed as I could gather. I did everything in my power to lose the guards that were chasing me, but it didn't work. They were faster, and I was no match for them. I didn't give up, though.Even when I realized that it was going to be impossible to get away, I knew for certain that I was going to get caught, and still, I kept running like there was an actual chance to escape them. I just didn't want to give up.The number of guards chasing me increased as other men on patrol noticed us and joined in. In a matter of minutes, I was swamped by their numbers. The chances of escaping, which was nearly impossible, hit the ground. It didn't take any time before one of the guards grabbed me by the arm, forcing me to a stop, and I fell, letting out a groan. One of the guards pulled me back up, "I've got you," he said, holding onto me."Leave me alone!" I shouted, trying to wriggle my arm from his grasp. His grip was too tight, and it stung my fle

Chapter 9: The New Home
Miguel's POVI was up as early as 6 a.m. for my routine jog around the compound and my exercises. After that, I hit the shower to get ready for another busy day. I adjusted my collar before the mirror, picked up my coat, and threw it on. I slipped, Killer inside my coat, along with a new pack of cigarettes and a lighter. I buttoned up, straightening my coat, and then headed out of the room."Good morning, Mr. Castello," the guards chorused as I stepped out of the room."Morning," I mumbled, walking briskly as I went straight to the room on the lower floor where I had taken Ava last night after she slept. After she attempted to escape, which was luckily hindered by the guards, I realized that keeping her might take extra effort, so I decided to move her to another room with no chance for escape.A room with no windows or a large air vent. I'd like to see her try to escape this place. Last night, I had been careless, but that wasn't going to happen again. I wasn't going to let her s

Chapter 10: She is Caged
Ava's POVMy mind emptied as the gunshot echoed through the room. His body dropped just like Fernando's, and the wedding incident flashed before my eyes as I watched this stranger fall to the floor. My eyes darted to Miguel, and he slipped the pistol back in his coat like nothing happened. He shot him. Nobody screamed. There wasn't even a squeak. The event replayed in my head repeatedly, filling me with horrors. Miguel had made good on his threat last night. He killed the man who had tried to rape me. It really wasn't a bluff. My body shuddered. A lump grew in my throat, and I felt sick to my stomach.Miguel caught my gaze as he turned to me blankly. His eyes were vacant —no emotion, no remorse, just empty as though he hadn't just taken a life. I lowered my gaze instantly, unable to look at him. He was a killer.I hated the man who tried to force his way with me, but still… I never wanted him to be murdered like this. But he brought it up on himself. It was his fault and this d
