Over the next few weeks, BaiXue followed the foxes for them to show her the ropes, before she would be allowed to act on her own. They showed her the locations of various villages and the fastest routes to take. They also put her through self-defense training, but it was minimal and far below her personal standards.
BaiXue was slightly taken aback by the area that was under their radar. The foxes knew of villages in the entire forest, all the way out to the coast. The nearer ones took them less than a day to reach. The furthest ones tooks days for them to reach. Still, there was no sign of the female lead's village. BaiXue wondered if it laid beyond the mountain that was on the other end of this forest.
They had never tried to cross the mountains before, even though it was around FenFang's dwelling. The mountain was treacherous to cross and had stronger people living on it. The foxes did not want to take the risk for FenFang. BaiXue realised that the original soul was likely the only one willing to cross the mountain and find a safe passage for other to take.
They were finally making their way to the final village, which would also be BaiXue's trial village. The young foxes would be assessing her capabilities in gathering information. As logn as she passed this, she could move on her own from then on.
/It's likely my village./
[How do you know?] BaoBao asked.
/Have you not realised that only my village have not yet appeared? It's definitely nowhere near the coast, so it shouldn't be too far from FenFang's dwelling. I don't believe that my village hid themselves that well. There were more well-hidden villages. The question is, why did they leave my village for last? Do they know where I come from? Or is my village so easy that it can serve as some test?/
True enough, after a day of travelling, they arrived at BaiXue's old village.
BaoBao was confused. [How did the original soul wander around for SO long, and not arrive at FenFang's place?]
/...I bet that FenFang is involved in it, somehow. There's something about her and this forest that I can't place my finger on yet./
BaiXue took roads less travelled by people and naturally blended in with the background. All the while, she stealthily kept herself within earshot of conversations around her. Anyone who saw her would think that she was just another person going about their day.
Nobody in the village recognised BaiXue as the one whom everyone blamed and hated for causing the death of one of their strongest people. However, BaiXue would not fault them for it. The last time she met her reflection in a body of water, she looked like a brand new person, even to herself. Her memory of the old self was someone small, timid, and weak. Whereas, she now carried herself as confident and aloof. Her skin also had a healthier glow to it, which she guessed could be due to her constant cultivation. A skill that she had learnt in the first world and applied in a different world.
The three foxes who observed BaiXue from the sidelines got extremely excited. She was a great addition to their team! The moment BaiXue returned to their side, they jumped out of the foliage that they were hiding among.
"There was talk about some recovery from a bandit's raid, the losses they incurred from it, and about changing the location of the village."
"Ohhh! That's valuable information! If they change their location, we'll have to look for them again, from scratch."
"Yes, that'll be a bother. So, we should keep a close eye on this one."
"Good job, BaiXue!"
The three of them each gave their input, before making their way back to FenFang's dwelling.
The foxes talked among themselves on the way back. They no longer tried to involve BaiXue because she was very quiet and only spoke when spoken to. BaiXue was not much fun. Meanwhile, BaiXue held her conversation with BaoBao.
/There is so much for me to discover in this world./
[There is?! I knew there must be more to this world! Is it the way this world works? The plants? The sky? The animals? The people?] BaoBao continued to throw out random suggestions, questions that his kind had about Legacy Worlds.
/I'm talking about what I mentioned earlier./ BaiXue finally found a good pause to interrupt BaoBao.
[Earlier?]
/About FenFang and the forest?/
[Oh... Thaaat... What about it?]
/I'm guessing that FenFang casted some sort of enchantment in this forest that allows her some control over it.../
[Why? How do you know?]
/We haven't run into any trouble so far, have we? Do you think that is normal? In a forest like this?/
[Now that you mention it... We only met wild animals far away from FenFang's dwelling.]
/It also seems like the further the foxes are from FenFang's dwelling, the higher their guards are raised. We were given only the minimal self-defense training as if she was sure that was all we needed. This self defense training may really be just for show. A weak ignorant individual would not have realised it but-/
[But you're far from that!] BaoBao ended her sentence for her in a huff.
Once they were back at the cave, the four of them reported their findings to FenFang .
"Oh? They're planning to move? Where are they planning to go to?"
"They have not decided on a location yet. Things are still being discussed. They may not even move in the end." BaiXue replied.
"Looks like we need to keep a close eye on that village for now." FenFang arrived at the same conclusion.
BaiXue nodded to show her agreement. She truly did not care what would happen to the village that the original soul grew up in. BaiXue did not feel any form of attachment to the people or the place even though she knew that the original soul had some lingering feelings for her birth place. She was not the original soul. However, she did develop some familial feelings for the strong and kind hearted brother.
Seeing that the sky was still dark, they retired for the night. There was a few hours left before sunrise. BaiXue laid on the pile of hay covered with soft animal pelt. The foxes and her shared a small but cosy cave that stood beside FenFang's cave.
/FenFang did not react to the news of bandits raiding the village.../
[So...?]
/... Maybe, just maybe, she had already known about it.../
The next day, FenFang assigned new tasks to the four of them. One of the foxes were tasked with monitoring BaiXue's village. BaiXue got assigned to a coastal village that was one of the first villages they had visited early on.
"The pregnant woman in that village should have given birth by now. Go and get updates."
BaiXue nodded.
"Take this." FenFang stretched out a hand. A short black jadeite tube laid in her palm. It looked like a tiny whistle.
BaiXue opened her palm to receive it.
"This is strictly for emergencies." FenFang continued to instruct her. "Emergencies ONLY include danger towards the mystical beings, not yourself. When you blow into this, it signals to MengYao where his assistance is needed."
BaiXue nodded seriously. She noticed how the other three foxes seemed especially quiet when they would usually chirp in a sentence or two each time.
Feeling BaiXue's stare, one of them finally spoke up. "You should really understand that emergencies does not include your own safety..."
Another one chirped in. "We... had a sister... who used it to save herself when she was almost beaten to death, after being found spying on the village."
"So there were four of you?" BaiXue clarified.
The two who replied nodded. The yellow fox continued to hang her head low as if not wanting to be a part of this conversation.
"Please don't mind her. She was the closest to our deceased sister."
"That guy... killed her for her mistake. And let her assailants go... Don't take him lightly."
"Now that you understand the purpose and dangers of this flute, you may go." FenFang dismissed them.
BaiXue left in a jiffy. There was only the need to pack one or two change of clothes. Food and water could be taken care of along the way.
When BaoBao ensured that she could no longer be seen by anyone, she dashed ahead with her true speed. She was much faster now. If her brother was alive, he would have been proud of her growth. However, it was not enough for her. She would have been barely able to keep up with her deceased brother.
When the sun set, she stopped to practice her martial arts until her stamina ran out. Her stamina for fighting was significantly worse than her stamina for running. She was glad that she could finally train up her body's endurance and physical fitness. Before this, the foxes were constantly around her.
After her martial arts practice, she cultivated for the rest of night. She had already cultivated so much over the past months, but her body was not even half filled with energy. She was sure by then that no one cultivated in this world, yet their strength was reliant on their spiritual energy. This meant that it was down to one's natural talent of absorbing the spiritual energy of whatever was consumed. No matter if it was consumed by drinking, eating, or breathing. This talent was what the original soul likely lacked as well.
With her new speed, BaiXue covered more distance in a shorter amount of time.
Upon reaching her destination, she found an area that is kept out of sight. She set up camp there, then hunted for food. Hunting for food was now of no issue, thanks to an improved physique, improved reflexes, and BaoBao's surveillance and herding assistance.
Once she settled down, she continued practicing her martial arts for the rest of the day. Due to her stamina, her practice was interspersed with breaks that she would spend cultivating.
BaoBao casually wondered if BaiXue would ever get bored of going through the same motion in every world. She always needed to restart from scratch and train so intensely because the original body was always so weak.
BaiXue planned to keep this up, and only go to the village on the fifth day, which was the day she would have arrived, if she had travelled at the foxes' speed. However, a small commotion drew her attention. She stayed hidden among the foliage and approached the source of the commotion.
"You have to kill her!" A man was seen shouting at a young couple. The woman was carrying an amazingly pretty baby with coral pink hair and coral blue eyes in her arms, while the man shielded the woman by standing in front of her.
"How can you be so sure that she would be evil?" The father of the child questioned sternly.
"My baby would not hurt anyone! I believe in her! I won't let her either!" The mother screamed in tears.
"That's what you say now. Wait till she controls your minds, then all of our minds!" The same man shouted.
"Wait, what if she's already using her ability on them? They're protecting her only because she wants to be protected!" A woman said in paranoia.
"She's just a BABY!" The father shouted.
"A MYSTICAL one!"
"You can't underestimate a mystical being." Yet another man cautioned.
"I promise that no one will be hurt! If anyone gets hurt, then I'll let you wipe out my family!" The father promised.
"Someone was already hurt yesterday! Why do you think we are here today to confront you?"
"Yesterday's incident does not count. That person attacked us. Our baby was only trying to protect her mother out of instinct." The father said through gritted teeth.
"It proves our point that your baby's dangerous."
"All she did was cry!" The mother defended her baby.
"AND it only caused the attacker to go into a momentary daze. The one who dealt the finishing blow was ME!" The father continued in a menacing tone. "If anyone dares to hurt us, I will kill in self-defense. I'll only accept punishment if others were hurt for no reason."
The mob took a step back collectively. The one who spoke the most humphed and turned to leave.
BaiXue changed into her rabbit form to pretend to be another normal animal in the forest as the mob walked past the foliage she was hiding among. "Are you really planning to let them be?" The paranoid woman asked the man who seemed to be leading the rest. "Of course not, how can we let such a dangerous thing live and threaten our peace?" As the mob left the area, BaiXue hopped closer to the hut to check on the family. The father was trying to comfort the crying mother in his arms while the pretty baby looked at her parents with confused teary eyes. BaiXue hopped back to her camp. /It was not made clear in the book but it seems that this may be the norm for people who change into mystical creatures. MengYao and FenFang were not the exceptions. FengJiao and her village were the odd ones./ [The world's consciousness fill in all the missing details of the book to make it a complete world.] BaoBao explained w
BaiXue caught up to the family in no time then led them to her hideout. "Thank you for helping us but... Are you sure that it's safe so close to the village?" The father could not help but ask. "Sometimes the most dangerous place can be the safest place to hide at." BaiXue explained. Besides, she was confident in the spot that she chose. It was close enough to the village to be considered as a part of the village territory but far enough for people to not bother walking through. "Who are you? Why're you helping us?" The mother asked. "Someone else wanted to offer their help but could not so here I am." She did not want to reveal the existence of the writing to anyone else but did not want to lie to good-natured people, so she said it in such a way. "How long do we have to hide here for?" The father asked again. "Until someone strong arrives." She left it at that and closed her eyes to relax against a tree. Although she looked like she
She left when the moon hung high up in the sky. She ran without stopping. The moon eventually descended and the sun took its place by the time BaiXue reached the rock dwelling. While BaiXue dutifully reported all relevant information to FenFang, BaiXue caught the little changes in FenFang's expression that indicated some surprise and newfound understanding. /She knew that there was something fishy with that village. How? Why?/ BaiXue wondered to herself. "So you know where his loved ones are held at?" FenFang clarified. BiaXue nodded. "Go. Summon MengYao and save the family at the right time." BaiXue immediately took off to do as instructed without bothering to take a rest. She needed to gain FenFang's trust as quickly as possible. She wanted to hasten her trip to the mountains. After all these time, she had only found one other clue and it was at another coastal village with high rock formations. Similar
Upon reaching the mountains, she easily noticed the difference between exploring the mountains and the forest. Naturally, the animals that lived on the mountains were different from those in the forest. It was also much easier to run into animals or people living here. /The original soul could cross successfully? She must have learnt to be really stealthy from all the errands she ran for FenFang, by the time she was tasked to cross the mountain./ BaiXue commented with a slightly impressed tone. Although it might have been a problem for the original soul, it proved to be no problem for BaiXue, thanks to her speed and BaoBao's surveillance. She avoided any encounters with people or real animals and scaled the mountain easily while inspecting it. When she found nothing, she started to lure animals away from their t
[Erm... BaiXue, he's angry right? Why's he so angry at us?] /How'd I know?/ [That's LongFei, isn't it?] /He matches the description./ [He didn't sound like a grumpy man in the book!] "What were you doing in the cave for so long?" His voice was low but his tone revealed the height of his rage. BaiXue frowned. /How did he know how long she spent in the cave?/ [I was paying full attention! I really didn't see him!] BaoBao defended himself. "Shocked that I knew? Of course I would know everything that happens in my garden. I saw how you lured her out. Were you challenging her? Did you think you'd win?!" The more he talked, the more he looked like he was about to burst. BaiXue felt no obligation to reply him. The moment he unreasonably exploded at her like that, he lost the hold he had on her. So, BaiXue dashed off once she
BaiXue came out of the room after changing and found LongFei seated at a table in the middle of the spacious room. He gestured to the dishes on the table and said, "eat." "No thanks, I'd like to go back down the mountain now." "You can't." LongFei said firmly. "I know. That's why I'm asking you to bring me down." "...Eat first then." She relented and sat down at the table to have a bite. [How do you communicate with him?] BaoBao had felt insulted for BaiXue but he was surprised by how BaiXue replied as if LongFei had not just said something high-handed. After LongFei was satisfied with the amount she ate, he transformed into a dragon with a sparkly pale blue aura and let her climb onto his back. His descent was very gradual. He did not want her to feel sick. She was only fine the previous time because the all-cure herb he had fed her would also cure any issue she might have suffered from ascending too quickly.&
When the sun began to set, LongFei was still quietly sulking at top of the mountain that was closest to FengJiao's village, until a vague shadow against the sun caught his attention. With his superb eyesight, it did not take long for him to identify it. A black phoenix flying towards FengJiao's village, from the same place that BaiXue had came from. /He must be the one.../ LongFei's expression turned dark and gloomy. MengYao had visited FenFang within the past month. So, he had already heard of news of another village coercing and manipulating a mystical one into protecting them. /What deceitful monsters./The thought of them using an innocent mystical being like a slave, for their benefits, made him sick to his stomach. He had been all ready to attack on sight, but the villagers' unusual reaction upon seeing him made him think twice. They seemed to treat him like a star, or a deity. They called everyone out to the center of the village
She dashed forward and kicked his leg with her full strength. Pain shot through his entire leg from his shin but the only reaction he gave her was a mere twitch of his eyebrows. Since he did not move, BaiXue ended up ricocheting off his leg instead. She leapt up, aiming for his chin next, then spun in mid air to kick his cheek. Each time, his head snapped along with her kick. A little bit of blood trickled from his lips. However, that was it. LongFei stood there without moving a single step. It was as if he was merely slapped hard by someone. BaiXue retreated and charged forward to lunge at his stomach. She knocked the wind out of him but he still refused to move an inch. He behaved like a human punching bag. BaiXue breathed heavily. /...Am I still weak or is he really strong?/ [Regardless of that... He's...] BaoBao sounded a little concerned. /Not defending at all./ [But why?]
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
