Days passed with ZhangYong looking for Xinyi whenever he could. He did so while he worked. He did so whenever he was free. Not a second went by without her on his mind.
Alas, results were not always equivalent to the effort put into something. Even with the improved missing poster he had someone do after he saw the poor work put up by her family, no one turned up with any news. No matter where he searched, he did not see a hair nor hide of Xinyi.
On the contrary, Xinyi's family, including HuiShan, moved on pretty easily and quickly. The effort they put into finding her dwindled, especially after the dissolution of her marriage plans. They grew to accept that she was likely dead or gone forever.
Although ZhangYong knew how estranged Xinyi was from her family despite growing up in the same house, he still found it hard to accept the reality of it. As much as he wanted to shout at them to not give up and to put in their all into finding her, he knew that he would only be venting his frustrations on them. His rational mind told him that there was a limit to how much he could meddle in another family's matters.
With the relationship between WangWei and HuiShan steadily improving, ZhangYong felt even more alone in his suffering. Whenever it got too much for him to bear, he would take out Xinyi's note that he kept with him at all times to gaze at it. /Even if everyone eventually forgets about you, I won't. I'll never stop searching for you./
Meanwhile, Xinyi was busy transforming her newfound home into a more livable and secure place.
She built a simple and small treehouse at the top of the tree with the thickest canopy then stuck even more leaves and twigs to the exterior of the house as camouflage.
She made weapons and traps from scratch.
She created gardens of herbs and mixed in dead weeds and other wild plants to make it look like they were random vegetation growing at random spots throughout the area. The moment the dead plants became too obvious, she would replace it with newer dead ones.
Once those necessities were done, she built platforms on other trees in the vicinity, making almost all the trees look the same from the bottom as the tree that held her treehouse.
Xinyi has indeed chosen to live in the wilderness.
Knowing that she was relatively weaker at scheming, Xinyi felt that cutting off contact with the human society may be the best option for her whose mission was simply to survive. This way, it would reduce the likelihood of being found or falling into someone else's scheme.
Xinyi ended up living almost primitively and she never needed to pay a visit to a village. Although it took some getting used to, Xinyi much preferred this than having to watch her back at all times.
The place she found was thanks to BaoBao's ability and was somewhere ZhangYong did seem to be aware of if Xinyi could judge based on the lack of mention about it.
After they had dropped off the farewell gift near ZhangYong's camp, BaoBao used himself as a form of transport to hasten their search for a safe place to settle down. They could only do this now because there was no risk of someone making a sudden appearance and spotting BaoBao.
At the cluster of mountains not too far away from ZhangYong's camp, BaoBao informed Xinyi of a little spot hidden among the cluster that was accessible through a small cave of the nearest mountain. Normally, no one would enter the cave, much less venture very deep into it, so the place looked almost magical in the way it remained untouched. It was like a little haven tucked away from the human world. She felt a little bad for disturbing the serenity of this place with her presence but it was something she had to do.
Nonetheless, Xinyi did not count on her luck and still took careful precautions.
As it turned out, her paranoia was not for nothing.
The rare few who did come across this place were bandits looking for a place to crash or hide. During such times, Xinyi would choose to ignore them as long as they stayed out of her way the way she stayed out of theirs. If her existence was discovered or if they began to talk about making this place their own, Xinyi would use her traps to kill them off one by one.
While their bodies were left for wild animals to consume, their loot would be inspected by Xinyi. Xinyi kept anything she found useful. It could be clothes, weapons, materials, books, and medicine. Everything else would be left on the patrol route of the soldiers for them to pick up.
As the days turned to weeks then months then years, Xinyi kept up to date with outside affairs by listening to the bandits talk. Sometimes BaoBao would eavesdrop on soldiers passing by and fill her in.
The first year passed by peacefully and uneventfully. The one she heard the most about was ZhangYong. People talked about how he worked harder than anyone else and how he kept growing stronger and stronger. He ended up being a source of inspiration for many soldiers and everyone was ready for him to take up his father's mantle.
In the second year, ZhangYong's skills and leadership were put to the test. Some scuffles started springing up in areas near the West border that ZhangYong's father protected.
While ZhangYong was kept busy at the border, there was an attack on the royal family during a royal banquet. HuiShan who bravely fought side by side with WangWei got recognised as someone who could stand with him, but the tide really only turned to their favour when ZhangYong turned up at the palace with some skilled soldiers in tow. While dealing with matters at the border, he had learnt that the scuffles were related to a planned attack at the royal banquet.
By the third year, HuiShan got officially engaged to WangWei, and ZhangYong was officially conferred the title of Commander of the West troops. HuiShan and WangWei's marriage was put on hold indefinitely because war was looming.
Later, there was talk about HuiShan turning traitor and being the spy for the enemy nation. Before anything could happen to HuiShan or anyone could touch HuiShan, the combined smarts of WangWei and ZhangYong identified the real spy as a trusted bodyguard cum aide of the crown prince.
This move not only cleared the court of corrupted individuals and spies, it also prevented a war with the wrong country. It was found that the spy came from a third country who was pulling strings from the dark and hoping to benefit from the chaos. As a result, WangWei was conferred the title of the crown prince.
The fourth year began with them hunting down the spy that managed to escape in time.
Days after Xinyi was updated of the latest news, BaoBao informed her of another group of people making their way into the cave. Xinyi immediately killed the small campfire, went through the standard procedure of erasing all traces of living, then hid in her treehouse. She stopped her cultivation entirely, slowed her breathing, and pictured herself disappearing from the surface of the earth.
Just as she hid her presence, a large group came out of the cave.
Everyone in the group looked wary and alert. Only one man, who stood out too much for Xinyi's liking, looked completely relaxed like he was taking a stroll in his garden. Besides his body language, his look alone was already more remarkable than the rest. Unlike ZhangYong and WangWei, this man reminded Xinyi more of a bodybuilder and his face has far more masculine features.
While everyone was taking in the sight with surprise evident on their faces, that man's steady gaze was languidly scanning the area. It hovered at certain spots that made her gulp.
Suddenly, his gaze went on to meet hers. Or at least it felt that way. Xinyi knew that it was impossible for him to have seen her through the thick vegetation covering her tree house. Even she was barely keeping track of them through the small gaps in the thick vegetation.
Xinyi continued to keep her breathing steady and slow although her heart felt like it was hammering against her chest. Her muscles were also tense, ready for her to make a move.
A few seconds later, his gaze shifted away and the corner of his lips quirked up. "This place seems special. Some spots are teeming with spiritual energy."
Everyone stopped in their tracks and almost uniformly looked back at the man when he spoke. He, however, continued to walk towards the tree that Xinyi was in.
An average looking man in the group spoke. "Since Leader Han's curiosity is piqued, this must be something good. But…"
Everyone then wryly looked at a man whose muscles were as well-defined as the buff one except that he was of a much leaner build. He had on a stormy expression from the start, indicating his bad mood.
"No more giving in to your curiosity. It was because of your curiosity about that darn woman and commander that our plans failed." His freezing cold tone further revealed his unhappiness with the buff man.
"All's not lost yet…" The buff man defended himself with the same languid attitude. "You got to admit that it was all worth it. If I won, I would have gotten her for myself. If I lost, I got to go against that dog commander."
"It's worth it only for you." The lean man glared at him with daggers in his eyes.
"And that's all that matters." The buff man grinned lazily.
"You took needless risks and jeopardised your mission for your personal whims. You revealed your identity to someone of the enemy nation just to collude with her to frame the woman. The commander is hot on our tails just because you want a taste of going against him. You will be punished for this."
"Hmm… Is that so…" The man responded lazily while the group settled down at a spot that he chose. "Aren't you worrying too much? I'm still here, aren't I? As long as you have me, we'll surely succeed."
The lean man was not intimidated by the dangerous look that entered the buff man's eyes. "Just like controlling some wild rabid dog. How annoying." He bit out before turning away from the buff man to go to sleep.
The dangerous look disappeared without a trace and the man actually looked disheartened. "Hey, hey, aren't you going to say how dangerous and risky it is? That if I'm really that much stronger that the commander, I wouldn't have to hide like this? Hey, why aren't you saying anything?"
"Erm… If you kno-"
"Shut up." The lean man, whose eyes remained closed, interrupted the person who spoke. "Don't say anything when you don't know what it'll do to this wild dog. Everyone, ignore him and go to sleep now."
The buff man then looked disgruntled and settled against the tree that held Xinyi's tree house. He snorted in displeasure at his failed taunt then stared at the spots on the ground that interested him, deep in thought.
No longer able to tolerate the itch to investigate, he got up and headed towards the spot on the ground closest to him.
Upon closer inspection and some rummaging, he found out that it was actually a garden of herbs that was well-concealed. He immediately flew towards all the different spots on the ground and found the same thing.
Amusement and interest lit up his eyes which were now focused on the tree that held Xinyi's house.
/It's no longer there./ Paying close attention to his surroundings again, he easily identified Xinyi's location.
Although he could not see a thing through the canopy of the trees that were so lush that it entwined with each other, he could track her movements.
A wide toothy grin slowly spread across his lips. /I understand now./
He had investigated the gardens first because it had a stronger presence than the one in the tree. However, he now knew that the one he should have investigated first should have been the weaker presence. The ground was a mere accumulation of the spiritual energy of the person who was trying to run away now.
Knowing that he has time to chase after the slow moving target, he first flew up to inspect the canopies of the trees and ended up uncovering more of Xinyi's secrets.
The lushness of the canopy was actually deceptive. It was all man-made for camouflage.
He spotted man's clothes in Xinyi's house so assumed that she was a man. /This guy just keeps getting more and more interesting! I simply have to meet him!/
He looked towards Xinyi's location once more and managed to catch sight of a black figure slipping into the cave.
Just as he flew towards the cave to catch up to Xinyi, sounds of explosions and traps being sprung rang throughout the entire area and caught his attention.
His group that was aware of his actions for the entire time had automatically followed him, only to end up activating one trap after another.
Branches broke. Nets sprung up from the bottom and caught unsuspecting and slow-reacting individuals. Heavy logs swung down from the trees like a pendulum, crushing those caught in the nets and knocking away anyone else in its path. Those that escaped or got knocked away landed into pits where there weren't any before then were impaled to death by spikes stuck to the base. Spears and arrows flew. Some of those who dodged landed into bear traps.
It was as if Xinyi predicted all their escape routes and behaviors. The better ones survived it by the skin of their teeth with the use of their insane reflexes, good observation, or pure raw power. The man that Xinyi was most wary of had gotten away unscathed with the help of all three.
"How marvelous!" The buff man's eyes lit up with excitement and he laughed aloud while all the other survivors winced. They have just gotten ambushed and their group of 20 got reduced to 8. His nonchalance was appalling even to them right now.
/It's time to catch my pet./
While the group had been making their way to her tree, Xinyi observed them and figured out the core and filler members of the large group. Based on their conversations, Xinyi identified the buff man as the spy that ZhangYong and WangWei were chasing down. When she did, she started rambling to herself. /Is this the world consciousness trying to correct events by pulling me back into the plot? Does this mean that the original soul died around now? Did I even manage to delay her death? Or is my luck just this bad?/ The moment the spy left his spot to head towards one of her gardens, Xinyi made her move. He knows. He definitely knows. [Eh? We're leaving? Why? We have the advantage of this being our home ground.] BaoBao was incredulous when Xinyi started backing away into the darkness and using it as a cover while she moved from platform to platform
The spy bent down to pick her up again but Xinyi swung her sword at him, which he easily dodged. Each time he tried to approach her, each time she swung her sword. Leaves and dirt flew. Deep cuts formed on the ground. The spiritual power of her attacks increased her attack range and would normally have kept people at bay, but looking at the ease at which the spy was dodging every one of her strikes, she was sure that he was merely toying with her. His eyes were filled with glee while he very slowly but surely got closer to her. He was already picturing the ways he could have her later. After letting her swing her sword around for a while more, he finally threw out another rock to put a stop to it. The rock hit her hand and made her drop the sword. In the same instant she dropped her sword, he reached her side and caught her. After he sheathed her sword for her, he carried Xinyi under his arm
The spy's words made ZhangYong freeze. His senses came back to him and his guard was instantly raised. Because he had his full focus on the spy, it was only now that he realised there was another presence. He looked up and found the tip of a sword an inches away from his face. Although his fast reflexes enabled him to dodge instantaneously, it was still not enough to escape unscathed. The sword grazed past his cheek and cut his jaw but the assailant did not stop there. When he saw ZhangYong dodge, he reacted at the same time and changed the angle of the sword so that it plunged towards ZhangYong's chest. A loud thud sounded and blood spilled on the ground and on the spy. The assailant's body hung lifelessly off the tree trunk that the spy last crashed into with a sword pierced through his heart from his back. The spy and ZhangYong were momentarily stunned by the unexpec
Luna regained consciousness and found herself back in the black claustrophobic space. Her body felt light and comfortable again. It felt as if her experience of dying just moments ago was nothing but a bad dream. "Is it always like this here?" Luna looked at BaoBao who was in the space with her instead of talking to her through telepathy like the first time they met. BaoBao looked around the seemingly empty space. "Seems like it..." "It can't be changed?" "This space is supposed to reflect the host's heart. I've never heard of it changing its appearance before." "So my heart's black?" "I don't know. We've never considered interpreting its appearance." "Doesn't matter then." Luna had only asked about it in passing. "Would you know what happens in the rest of the story?" "Yup! I will know everything alon
Luna woke up to intense pain coursing through her entire body. She hissed in frustration. /First I wake up weak like I was on the verge of dying. Now I wake up in pain like I'm dying again. What next? I wake up when I'm supposed to be lying dead in a coffin?/ BaoBao winced. He could not control when she would appear in the story. [Do you want to receive the original soul's memories first or for me to carry you somewhere to recover first?] /Give me the memories. I need to understand the situation I'm in first before knowing where I can go./ The first thing Luna understood upon receiving the memories was that she was in a dog eat dog world. Everything was decided by power, including the position of the ruler of the country. All they had to do was to challenge the ruler to an official death match, if the match was refused, a revolt was allowed. People in this world had real magical abilities. They could create s
Alice quickly realised that her spiritual energy could not flow in or out of her body. If she had to describe it, it was as if her pores were clogged or plugged close. Now that she focused intensely on the quality of the air around her, she could not feel the same energy in it that she felt in the previous world. So, she could only circulate and control the flow of the energy within her. She played around with the flow, then tested if she could concentrate the energy flow to a specific body part. Finding that it was possible, she moved on to test the effects. She set up the pillow nicely against the wall, then punched it with her good arm. Poof. Her punch was measly. The original soul had seriously neglected training her body, like many other magic users do. She fluffed up the pillow nicely again, then threw the same punch, except this time, she concentrated the flow of energy into her arm. Her hand flew faster. Ponk! Along with the sound, some stuffing squeezed out of the holes tha
BaoBao knew that Alice could not see so he warned her. [Defend!!] Alice immediately curled herself into a ball and surrounded herself with a water wall. In the next instant, fire broke through the earth and hit her. She focused her defense on her left side while she kicked the walls around her repeatedly. She did not dare to take a break. She did not know how much he had reinforced the cage and her water wall was already dangerously thin. Just before her water wall completely evaporated, her foot broke through the earth box. However, she jumped right into another earth wall. One of his lackeys had stayed alert and provided assistance when he saw Alice break out. Her water wall evaporated. Intense heat seared her sides and a short cry escaped her mouth. As soon as she felt the burning pain, a strong cooling breeze blew through the entire area. The earth walls around her shattered and she braced herself for impact. Instead, she found he
Meanwhile, back in Alice room, Alice reflected on the fight with the fire user, while looking at the water ball floating above her bandaged hand. She thought about how her water wall changed to steam. /Understanding our ability like it is a part of our body... I know the chemistry of water and about the movement of particles... Would it be possible to manipulate it down to the individual particles?/ She visualised her water ability down to its individual water particles then imagined them moving differently. She visualised slowing down the particles' movement and making them increasingly compact. Sweat began to bead on her forehead from her intense concentration. It took a whole five minutes before BaoBao exclaimed, "I see some frost forming on the surface!" Alice made the water disperse and panted. /It's possible! I can change the state of my water!/ BaoBao could not believe it too. If she could change the state of water into ice an
RenRan began napping. A lot. Souls did not need sleep, but they could choose to do so. FanHai was one of those who seemed to never catch a wink of sleep. While RenRan slept, he stayed by her side, always keeping himself busy with something. This carried on for a good time before she began to catch him with his guard lowered after waking up. ‘A while more.’ RenRan did not believe that a man like him could keep himself entertained this long and resist a cat nap with her. At this point, BaoBao cried out in frustration. There were a few times she could have slipped away because he had already fallen asleep with her! He even dared to cuddle with her. That spot was only reserved for two people! Him and the familiar soul! “Is it really too much to assist by waking her up?” He challenged the elder one. “Is it so hard for her to stay awake in a world that doesn’t need sleep?” He challenged BaoBao back. “...That’s easy for you to say.” Then, BaoBao puffed his cheeks and returned to gl
RenRan’s eyes opened wide. No matter how hard she pushed against him or how much she pounded his chest, shoulders, or head, he persisted on. She tried to bite him, but he avoided using his tongue and skillfully moved his mouth in tandem with her attempts. With his hand cupping the back of her head, she could not break the kiss either. She was at his complete mercy. ‘I should have dropped the act earlier. This isn’t worth it!’ Fear slowly gripped her heart as she wondered how far he would take it. Then, he stopped, just as suddenly as he started. “Enough?” He grinned and meaningfully applied greater pressure on her lower back. His move made RenRan conscious of the rock hard member against her abdomen. Immediately recognising what it was, she fiercely pushed against his chest and demanded, “Okay, let me go! I’ll properly spend some time with you first!” He smiled with satisfaction. “Like I thought.” Then, he let her go. “You wouldn’t have to waste so much time and energy if you jus
RenRan’s heart jumped but she poised herself promptly, ready to grapple with whoever had manhandled her. “Why’d you run away from me? Didn't we have deal?” The somewhat familiar deep voice cleared up the situation. “I’m not running from you.” RenRan explained as she attempted to pull her arm out of his strong grip. “You know you can’t lie with this within us.” He pointed at his chest and kept on his tight smile. “You got to try harder than that to convince me.” RenRan frowned. “And I was precisely following that to find you, as agreed.” His smile gradually disappeared as his gaze dropped to study her entire body. “…You’re weaker than the last time I saw you.” RenRan had nothing to say in response. Instead, she attempted to twist her arm free again. “Even so, I’ve never heard of a compass malfunctioning because of this before.” Annoyed with his accusations, RenRan tuned in
RenRan headed for a condensed group of swirling sparkles that was just a little larger than her. ‘So, my mission is to achieve my dream no matter the cost. What’s my dream? To find YingTao? No, I’ll definitely find him. It’s just a matter of time. Then, I’ll find out that YingTao doesn’t want me anymore. And I’ll want him back...’ RenRan thought of everything that had happened in RenRan’s life. ‘I can only hope that her dream’s that simple...’ She began to think of all her misdemeanors, then ways to right her wrongs. [I should stop you right there. If it wasn’t clear enough before, as long as you’re in the story scenes, you’re supposed to do and say all the things the original character did.] ‘What? You didn’t say that earlier.’ [I mentioned earlier that it's risky to provoke this world’s consciousness into doing anything. So, we can only observe this world. What do you think this mea
Luna was right. She had inhabited Luo RenRan’s body. RenRan’s family belonged to the working class, but her gripe was not their standard of living, it was her parents’ favourtism for her brothers. She was the only girl, and she was the oldest. Anything her brothers did, she was responsible for. Any wrong they committed, they were let off with a more lenient punishment, while she was supposed to forgive and forget. Their expectations for her and the restrictions they imposed on her could not be compared to the standards they held her brothers against. The only solace she had was that her siblings never directly crossed her line, even when she was old enough to start working. If only it stayed that way forever. “RenRan... Forgive your brother, okay? You know he only took it because he needed it and only you can help him. If you have someone you need to blame, blame your father.” A gentle motherly voice coaxed her. “If your father helped, none of us would be
“Wh- What am I doing here?” BaoBao looked around in shock. He recognised this place. The last time he was here, it was to defend Luna. “Why am I back here?”The elder one sighed. “Why did you do it?”“D- Do what?”Gasps were heard around him.“It lies.”“It truly deceives.”“Surely, that’s bad.”“This can’t go on.”“It’s always this one system.”“Clearly there’s something wrong with it.”All the administration looked at the elder one, waiting for the go ahead. The elder one looked at BaoBao so intensely as if BaoBao was a specimen under his microscope. BaoBao gulped. He felt exposed. What was with this elder one? Whatever the case, Luna had already been sent to the next world. He could not dilly dall
“Don’t ignore me! I know you’re awake!” Someone pushed Luna’s shoulder hard. Her eyes flew open, and a purple and black galaxy unfolded before her. Her bottom left whatever she had been sitting on, but she did not fall. There was a resistance that made her body glide instead. Luna blinked a few times, stunned. "I dare you to say it again.” The same voice challenged her. Luna turned towards the source. There it was again. The sensation when she moved was familiar. However, she had no time to make sense of it. The deep voice belonged to a burly woman, instead of a man like Luna had assumed, not that it made anything better. Her guest looked as friendly as a starving lioness. Luna straightened her neat celestial-like robes while she quickly collected her thoughts. It shimmered and shone brighter than the glow emanating from her body. The fabric was so silky to touch that it was like water. Although it was transluc
“LUNA!” BaoBao jumped onto her. Luna grunted from the impact. It reminded her of how much he had grown from the first time she met him. ‘How is he so weightless but so heavy at the same time?’ “Hi BaoBao,” she laughed lightly, “Is this your new way of sending me to the next world?” “Huh?! No, no! It’s far too soon to be sending you to the next world, isn’t it?!” Luna laughed even more. “I was just teasing.” BaoBao blinked innocently. “Oh.” Luna looked at him endearingly. “You’re still so much like a kid.” She rubbed the top of his head lovingly. “Don’t systems live for eternity, if nothing goes wrong?” “Mmhm, what about it?” “It still felt that long to you?” “YES!” BaoBao confirmed without a second thought. Luna laughed. “Let’s spend some time together before heading to the next world.” BaoBao’s heart warmed and h
Nozomi closed her eyes and thought hard about his request. It did not feel right or good to take his years, but she had no right to dictate how he should live his life.‘Since he’s really fine with it...’Nozomi pushed her hands forward to cup his cheeks. “Okay...”Hikaru’s eyes brightened up. He promptly retrieved his book and readied himself. Nozomi watched Hikaru activate his magic with interest. The way his book’s ribbon splits and transforms into a robe and staff never got old. “Thank you, for going along with my wishes.” His heartfelt gratitude was reflected in his eyes as well. Nozomi smiled in understanding and squeezed his hands that were once again holding onto hers. Hikaru closed his eyes and focused on her presence, then said the incantation that he had memorised by then.Green glowing vine marks appeared
