The stew was actually rather good. It seems Andromache can cook. I’m glad it won’t just be me cooking. Yes, some burned bits in the stew near the bottom of the pot, but overall it was good. The girls settled in for the evening, taking up the bed. Melite was crocheting something with the colorful yawn my mother brought. Europa was busying herself with brushing Andromache’s hair while Andromache was reading one of the books I’d brought from my max shift library.

It was oddly settling. To sit here content, not alone, as I reread a book for probably the millionth time. I could almost get used to this. But I remind myself it's not forever. This is only until they can escape and start their lives over somewhere. And I want that for them. I want them to be free and to live long, happy lives.

There were no middle-of-the-night disturbances. No one tripped over me to leave the room. No Minos or his guards coming to hassle me. I can only hope that Minos leaves the remaining tributes untouched. I don’t want anyone harmed because of me.I groaned, hearing the horns echoing from outside. “I hate that horn.” Europa grumbled from across the room. “We all do.” Melite grumbled. But her voice wasn’t coming from across the room. I opened my eyes and looked down. Melite was snuggled against me, face buried in my chest.“When did you get over here?” I asked, shifting, tightening my arms around her. I hadn’t even woken up when she decided to lay next to me. I’m usually a much lighter sleeper than that. “Not sure. Can’t really tell the time in here.” Melite sighed, nuzzling de

Demoleon blinked and looked from me to the girls as if wanting confirmation. All three nodded. “I would never hurt my cousin.” he defended. “It’s not just your cousin I protect. You touch Europa or Melite in a way they don’t want. If you hurt them in any way, I will kill you.” I warned, glaring at him. “I wouldn’t ever touch either of them.” he stated though I smelled embarrassment at the statement.I cocked my head, not really sure what that was about. I glanced at the girls. Europa and Andromache snickered while Melite looked as confused as me. I shrugged, letting it go. “Follow me. Did they feed you before sending you to die?” I asked, starting to walk back to the main room.“Um… no. Just some bread last night before lights out.” Demoleon answered cautiousl

“You can’t decide that for us.” Melite frowned, eyes narrowing up at me. “I… you need to understand. I care about you. It would be best if you got to live your life free. Out there where you can see the sun and the moons. Where you can take in all the wonders of nature that I have only ever read about. I want you to have more than this.” I sighed.“Who’s to say it will be better for us out there? If anyone ever found out we had been with you, we’d be mistreated. You know it.” Europa pointed out. “That’s a risk, but I know my mother would only entrust your lives with people she knows would take care of you. And while I don’t know if you’d all even go to the same place, it’s possible, and you’d have others as support.” I sighed.“And if either of us is pre

Demoleon shrugged, bracing himself on the wall as he got back to his feet. “I’m not sure if that’s specifically an animal thing. There are plenty of men that are unfaithful to their wives and have many mistresses. Some even take other men in secret.” he sighed. “That is true. I know Minos is unfaithful to my mother.” I nodded. “Come on. They’re probably worried.” I gestured for him to follow me.“I don’t think they are worried. They trust you won't hurt me. Most likely, they are bored, or they are talking about you. I saw the look Europa had when my cousin slipped and talked about your attributes. She is probably peppering her with questions wanting to know if she’s interested in you.” he smiled.“Well, that does sound like Europa. But I’m sure Melite will prevent her from

I don’t know how long I’ve been asleep. I could hear them whispering, opting not to open my eyes. “We should wake him up.” Demoleon whispered. “No, we should let him rest. His body needs rest.” Andromache argued. “His body also needs nourishment. He needs to eat.” Europa sighed. “So he eats more at breakfast. Let his body get the rest it needs.” Melite suggested. They were arguing over if they should wake me up to eat. Do I want to eat? I am hungry. But my eyes are so heavy. I think I’ll sleep a little longer. “Fine. He doesn’t seem to be moving anytime soon.” Europa conceded. “Yeah, so what does that mean for everyone’s sleeping arrangement?” Demoleon asked.“What do you mean?” Melite asked as I felt someone sit near my thighs. I cautiously approached, watching her long braid of midnight black hair move with each subtle movement of her head. She was trying to navigate the labyrinth. Too bad she never will. Without a map or having a perfect sense of direction. I know the way because of some strange ability I have where I just can't get lost. Not sure what that’s about, but it has benefited me in living here.Like the others, her clothes were a bit dirty and ragged, perhaps a little more so. This tells me Minos is obviously treating these youths like he would any prisoner, so terribly. I caught sight of a bruise on her ankle when her dress shifted enough to reveal some of her legs. It could be from a stumble, or it could mean the guards or Minos have been abusing her and possibly others.I made a mental note to find that out for certain. I need first to have her feel safe an

I grumbled to myself as I carved a new log into the wall. I knew that people would have misconceptions. I expected it. But I expected it to be about me. I can take anything someone wants to say about me. I don’t care. But I won’t let someone speak ill of my mother. My mother is an angel. How dare Eurymedusa speak that way about my mother. So judgemental. I continued to grumble as I etched the words into the wall. “Asterion!?” Melite’s voice called out. I groaned and rested my head on the wall. Why does she keep doing that? Wandering the maze is dangerous.“Melite…” I sighed, putting down my etching tool, and started to follow the sound of her voice and footsteps. “Asterion?” she called out again. I shook my head as I realized she was heading to the dead-end I set up for Demoleon and any other boys to

I frowned, mulling over her words. I don’t think the Fates care about me, and I can’t see a reason they’d want more of my kind roaming this world. If left unchecked, Minotaur could do such harm. I mean, I do eat the flesh of humans. And it’s possible such a trait could be passed to my children.I sighed and kissed her shoulder. “I rather doubt the Fates would want more of my kind. I’m sure as far as they are concerned, I am an error that they are just waiting for the moment to cut my lifeline and correct.” I shrugged.Melite frowned. “Don’t talk like that. You exist for a reason. And it isn’t to be a monster used by Minos. If you weren’t here, we’d all just have been executed. But you are here, and you’ve saved us from death.” she smiled as she reached up, touching my face. &ldq

  • Asterion   Epilogue Part Two

It was a long distance between the labyrinth and Lappa, but I managed to make the trip in half a day with my running and desire to see Melite and our son. I let out a breath as I reached the top of a hill and looked below to the small farm. I saw my son pushing a blow through a field, his ivory fur reflected the sun, and I could see the hints of his mother’s honey blonde in his mane.He has grown to be a strong young man. I smiled proudly to see how the fussy baby taken from me almost sixteen years ago had grown so well. My attention was pulled from my son as the door to the house opened, and Melite stepped out. She was still as beautiful as the first day I met her. Her hair piled up, showing her slender neck, a bright smile on her face that reached her beautiful blue eyes as she called out to our son.“Teskos! Come eat, my little star!” she s

  • Asterion   Epilogue Part One

You know how my story ends. It’s the only thing history, or rather mythology, writes about me. I was killed in my labyrinth by the ‘hero,’ and I will use that term loosely, Theseus, sixteen years after the first festival was held. I scoffed as I sat here in the darkness of the afterlife. “So this is what the Fates had planned for me? I would live to the age of thirty-two and die because the people of Athens sent a ringer to kill me and stop the octennial festival.I can’t blame them, of course. Who in their right mind would want to send fourteen of your noble youths to their deaths because some King was pissed about their son dying. So I don’t blame them for sending Theseus. He was not a noble. He also wasn’t a youth. The prick was my age and not even from Athens. But whatever. They managed to slip him into the group of tributes.

Another month had passed before my mother came again. They were both seven months into their pregnancies, and it was getting risky to move them if we waited much longer. “Will you be taking them both?” I asked as I sat between Melite and Europa on the bed. Both girls leaned closer to me, hugging my arms.“I can’t sneak two very pregnant women out at the moment. But I have a safe place secured in Milos. They will take good care of whichever girl goes and their child.” my mother assured. “So who shall leave?” she looked between Europa and Melite. Melite tightening her hold on my arm. “I want to stay with Asterion.” she sniffled.Europa sniffled. “So do I. But… I… alright, I’ll go.” she conceded. “Then gather your things and say goodbye.” my mother nodded ready

Now that we knew at least three of the girls were expecting, you’d have thought it would change things. But it hadn’t. At least not really. Our day-to-day routines remained the same. The only real difference was that the girls went to the bath more often and ate more than before. I was trying to be as attentive as I could and see to their needs.Which wasn’t too difficult, even when their needs seemed to be more carnal. I hadn’t realized pregnancy made women more aroused. But I wasn’t going to complain about that. Even as the weeks passed and the other girls started to have the same symptoms. Satisfying seven women were draining, but again I don’t think I should complain. I care for each of them, and the fact they are carrying my children somehow made them more attractive. It's been two months since my mother last was able to

“I think the last time was the last time.” for someone who had said the first time we had said would also be the last, she was more forceful in making her desires clear. Shifting her weight in my lap to rub her sex along my hardened length. “Eurymedusa…” I groaned. “Asterion…” my name came out as a breathy moan from her lips. I teased as I pinched her nipples.“Woman’s prerogative to change her mind. Now less talking and more…” she moaned as she rocked her hips, causing my tip to push through her folds. “More?” I ask, clenching my jaw because I thrust deeper, but I want her to say it. “Less talking about more fucking.” she insisted, hips wiggling, trying to take me deeper. That was enough confirmation for me as I gripped her hips, thrusting fully into her core.

“Mother…” I blink, trying to get up, wanting to greet her. To apologize to her for what I did. For what I put her through. “Asterion!” a chorus of voices shout my name as Demoleon, Amphidocus, and even Porphyrion rush to try and keep me from getting up. “No, moving.” Eurymedusa commands as she and the girls all watch me with worried looks. Shit, even Eurymedusa is worried. This doesn’t bode well.“Oh, my little star. Please don’t injure yourself further.” mother sighed softly as she hefted two large baskets into the room. “Oh, your highness, let us take those.” Andromache and Hesione hurried to take the baskets from her. “We didn’t expect you. With… what happened….” Melite bowed her head in greeting.I could tell Melite was uncomfortable. All of

I held Minos’ glare with one of my own. I know he’s angry about his son. But I don’t care. His son shouldn’t have dared enter my domain. He shouldn’t have dared to try and rape Periboea. He shouldn’t have raped Porphyrion. He shouldn’t have struck the boy either. He deserved what he got.I didn’t try to fight as his guards rushed and started throwing ropes to hold me, trying to force me. I could see the pain in my mother’s eyes, and it tore at my heart. I’ve hurt her. I will never forgive myself for causing her pain. And I know watching what is happening to me was causing her pain.I let out a loud bellow, startling everyone. The guards lost their grip on the ropes as I shook them off. I can’t speak and tell Minos exactly what I think. I won’t let him know I’m smarter than I app

I had assumed she’d want to greet him after what he did for her. “We will be back shortly.” I nodded to the others as I grabbed my ax. “We’ll have breakfast ready. Can you get the others on your way back?” Andromache nodded, already moving to start on breakfast. “Yes. After Porphyrion has settled in, I’ll see about putting up those markers so everyone can move freely and safely without needing me.” I nodded, heading for the entrance.Periboea hurried to keep up with me as we made our way through the twists and turns. I came to a sudden stop, Periboea crashing into my back. “Asterion?” she questioned. “Shh... he’s not alone.” I whispered, shoving her back around the corner. Her brow furrowed as she cocked her head, trying to hear what I did. I could hear more than one set of footfalls. One set was shuffled, timid. That would

I don’t know if I should feel awkward or not about this whole situation. They did walk in on us having sex. I don’t even know how long they were standing there. Did they only walk up as we climaxed? Or had they been standing there for some time watching like how Melanie watched Europa and me, though I knew in advance she was going to watch us.Melite at least took it with grace and made sure that Periboea didn’t feel bad or like she did something wrong by sleeping with me. And now I was left standing here with Andromache. The realization that she and Hesione are the only maidens I haven’t been intimate with settling in my mind.Do I want to have sex with either of them? I glanced over at Andromache. Her brown curls are a frizzy mess that she’d try to keep contained between a braid and had a handkerchief over the top of
