VERONICA
A not-so large gathering was allowed for the wedding ceremony where only those allowed in was strictly on invitation bases. After I changed into an equally pretty red dress, I sat down in my seat. A toast was made and the huge cake was cut by me and Lawrence. Followed by gifts, gifts and gifts. A lot of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t care about any of them gifts. My eyes kept darting around, there were a lot of rich men and women of affluence present. A good number of them I usually see in the television. Dad had me say Hello to some of them. Gosh, I smiled until my cheeks nearly peeled off!Of course, the media was allowed in to take the full coverage of the wedding. They were just everywhere, capturing just anything happening. I doubted they would miss a thing that happened. I imagined the headlines...the infamous playboy married. I couldn’t begin to imagine the looks of his crushes and the women he played around with.Chairman Williams stood up to give a speech. He looked elated. I couldn’t blame him. He must be glad to have managed to dump his playboy son on me and to become the highest shareholder in Las company. I hated him that instant. He used the weakness of my family to trap us down. “Just wait, Mr Chairman, I will get everything back to its place very soon.”“Today, as you all can see, I’m very much glad with what is happening here today. My only son is getting married. Of course, I am a happy father. I must thank each and every one of you for being here and most especially to the bride’s family...come, come, come please, Chairman Nicholas...” Dad stood and went up and the two exchanged some words I couldn’t hear and then a tight embrace as though they had known each other all their lives. I just scoffed within me, it was all for the media. They were businessmen after all.“As you all can see, the bride’s father is as happy as I am. I think he shed a tear or two...”The people giggled. He turned towards where I was seated and said, “Welcome to the family, my daughter. Now you are my daughter and if at all you need anything, don’t forget your father in-law is here, okay?”I nodded and forced a smile...all for the media. After his speech, Lawrence mother came to where I sat, lifted me from the seat and gave me a really tight hug. Oh my! she really was so pretty and her smile was infectious. Lawrence must have gotten his beauty from her.“Welcome to the family my daughter. Forgive my son for all you have heard about him okay and live in peace and love with him. I promise you; he is actually very sweet.” she winked.“I will come see you personally after the wedding, okay?” she had said hurriedly as one of the women came and dragged her away for something I suppose was important.Dad gave a short speech too before the ceremony resumed back. There was just enough food and drinks for whoever was present. I was beginning to feel choked up in the room and decided to step out for some fresh air.I had just stepped out when the media people rushed at me with their microphones charged at my mouth.“Tell us, how do you feel getting married to the son of the largest group in the country?”“Are you aware your husband was once a playboy and yet you agreed to marry him?”“Have you been in a secret relationship with him all? How long have you been together before you agreed to marry him?”“Do you love him?”Their lights flashed against my eyes in a blinding manner. I couldn’t hear anything else but their numerous questions being bombarded against me. I couldn’t breathe normally.... I panicked.Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed mine. I turned sharply to see who it was.“Lawrence?”“I’m sorry but she can’t answer any of your questions right now. The whole wedding preparations has taken a toll on her. Ask her all you want next time.”He told the media people and, in a flash, he pulled me out of their midst and away.My eyes were glued to his face as he led me away, my wrist firmly held in his. “Look straight ma’am. Your eyes will bore a hole on my face at this rate.” He said and I quickly coughed and looked away slightly embarrassed.Away from the eyes of the media, he stopped.“Where...are we?” I asked as I looked around.“Here, you wanted to get away from all those noise in there, take as much air as you want here. I give you ten minutes and I will take you back inside unless of course you wished to be devoured by the media out there.” he pointed to his wristwatch with a smirk.I glared at him. Now that he saved me from those hungry story seekers, I knew he would tease me about it for long.Soft gentle air breezed past my face and twirled my hair.“This is nice....” I breathed taking in the beautiful sight.Lawrence joined me. He didn’t voice it out but his reaction told me he equally liked the view. From the corner of my eyes, I could see him focus his gaze up, as he starred into the sky.“Why?....Why did you save me from them?” I asked him.He let out a chunk of air, glanced at me and slipped his hands into his pocket. A mischievous smug hung in his lips. “Because I’m cool?”I rolled my eyes. The reason why ladies tripped over hi glared hard at me. He was a terrible flirt! “Well forget it if you won’t say...anyways, thank you.”“No need to be thankful. I just did what I had to do. Which man would stand and watch those lying-ass media trap his wife like that? It’s ten minutes, we should get back inside.” he smirked again and started to head back inside.“What? wife?” I couldn’t help scrunching my face. What was the unusual kindness and flirting? If he was thinking I will be one of those girls that would fall at the wink of his eyes, then he had gotten it all wrong. After the ceremony was done and most of the guests was all gone, my family said their goodbyes to me. Dad was especially teary but mom wasn’t. Whatever was making her feel so certain and relaxed about letting her daughter marry a playboy, I just couldn’t tell. The ceremony hall had suddenly turned deserted as though over fifty people weren’t just there minutes ago. When I looked around, neither Lawrence nor any of his family member did I see. I was confused. They were all here moments ago, what happened? I was still looming in confusion when a servant walked up to me.“Ma’am, they are waiting for you. This way please...” She pointed towards the door to me. I frowned as my confusion heightened. “They? And who are they?”“The Williams’ family. This way please, they are waiting.”I gave her one look before I finally followed her with ‘Williams’ family’ replaying in my head. I wondered why they would gather again when the ceremony was already over. She led me through the hallway of the hotel for a few minutes before she finally stopped before a door. Knocked twice on the door before she pushed it open.As I stepped into the room, I was met with a long table which had on top of it different kinds of dishes and the Williams’ family sat around it.Surely there wasn’t going to be a second wedding ceremony, right? I almost blurted out the question. The servant girl turned towards me. “My name is Catherine and I will be your personal maid as ordered by the chairman. Please take your seat.” She pointed to a set of vacant seats in the table for me.I made my way to one of the vacant seats.“You are here, my daughter-in-law,” Chairman Williams said with a pleased smile. I bowed my head in respect.“Lawrence? Where’s Lawrence?” he questioned.Almost at the same moment, the door opened and Lawrence walked in.His father shot him a glare as he took the vacant seat beside me.“Now, let’s eat as one family. Today is a happy day.” Chairman Williams started. He opened one of the wines on the table and had the servants pour it into the glasses after which he raised one up and made a toast.“To better days in this family! That we may continue to live in love and peace as we have always done. To my son’s marriage, that he and his wife will grow in love and harmony and give me grand-children of course...”Everyone giggled before he continued again. I scoffed within me knowing that wasn’t ever going to happen. I bet Lawrence did more than a scoff. After the toast, we got to eating. Midway into the meal, one of Lawrence’s uncles cleared his throat and began to speak.“Senior, erm, my nephew must be a little sad...back there, he received gifts from a lot of guests except his father...”“Sad? Why will he be?”“That is Mr Oliver Williams, Chairman’s immediate younger brother and second son of the Williams’ family.” Catherine whispered in my ear.“Well, it is only right that he gets a gift from his father, the top man in the country. Am I not right, Jack, Noah?”“Of course! It is only proper our elder brother gifts his son.”“Jack, the second son of the family and Noah the last son of the family.” Catherine whispered to me again. “I agree, senior, it is the wedding of our one and only nephew and your only son after all...” Noah added.“Hmmm,” A low grunt from the chairman as he carefully dropped his spoon and wiped his mouth with a napkin. An icy silence came after with all of them focusing on the chairman’s next words. Lawrence had earlier on looked uninterested in the topic until the moment his father started to speak.“Of course! I should gift my son. This was what I have wanted, that he takes his responsibilities seriously. Errr, Mason,” he called looking around.A tall suited man came forward and handed him a file.“Director Mason, Chairman Williams personal assistant.” Catherine again whispered into my ear.I noticed the instant Chairman Williams opened the file, there was an increased tension in the table. My eyes followed their gazes and it dawned on me, there was a silent battle going on in the family.VERONICA “Here ma’am, what you asked for.” Catherine handed me an album. A picture album of the Williams family. After what I observed in the dining table, I became curious. There was something cold going on that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I was fully aware every family had their issues, imagine how much issues there will be in a conglomerate family. “Thank you, you may leave.” I discharged her as I took the album and walked into a room. I sat on the bed and opened the picture album. An elderly man and woman first met my eyes. “Mr Williams and his wife....” Lawrence grand-parents, now late. According to stories in the internet, it was known that Mr Williams and Lawrence’s father, Max, now Chairman Williams had jointly found the Williams group of companies. They had started out small with only the construction company and grew the company big. After the death of Mr Williams, Max Williams, his first son and co-founder had taken over and became chairman of the Williams group
VERONICA 8LAWRENCE POVMother herself had woken me up on the day of my so-called wedding. I nearly slept in.I was cladded in an Armani suit and as usual looked dripping hot. At the wedding, I waited up as my bride to be was led towards me by my soon to be father-in-law. It all was happening so fast I wished I was dreaming instead. Thoughts of Bianca filtered in and I held myself back. I had spoken to her over the phone the previous night and assured her I had no atom of affection for my supposed bride. Bianca didn’t mind, she is so understanding and my love for her increased. I just couldn’t wait for the whole thing to be over so I could go see her. God, I have missed her so much. Why did life have to be so unfair...why did I have to get into this lie of a marriage just when my long time crush accepted my love...why...why...As she walked towards me, my eyes caught her full length, my bride. She looked quite beautiful but when our eyes met, we both was however scoffing with disgust
VERONICA POV“Holy shit!!’ he screamed and next I went landing with a thud on the floor.I clenched my teeth holding back my groan.“This bastard...” I gritted under my breath.“Em!...” he towered over me, a hint of remorse in his face. Not like I cared about the remorse in his face.He offered his hand to help me up but I shot him a glare ignoring his hand and rising to my feet on my own.“I totally forgot I would be seeing a total stranger in the same bed with me...this morning...I was startled. Did that hurt?” he smirked.“Good morning to you too.” I slammed and walked straight into the bathroom, scowling.“No, no, don’t get in, I need to....” He screamed as I was getting into the bathroom but before he could get to the door, I had gotten in and bolted the door from inside. Seeing he was desperate to use the bathroom, a wicked idea popped up in me.It’s payback time, husband! After I finished with my business which lasted only but briefly, I relaxed in there doing absolutely nothin
VERONICA’S POV“He was just sitting right here a moment ago...where could he have gone to?” I said as Ms Patricia and I started to search around for Lawrence. A thought of how serious he had looked as he fiddled with his phone earlier on flashed in my head. Could it be something serious had happened?“Don’t panic ma’am, we will find your husband, I promise. He probably left on his own...This place is well secured.”“Of course, we will find him...” I muttered as my eyes strayed all over the place. Ms Patricia had made the dance and the show to pause as we secretly searched for Lawrence.“You, go this way...you...this way and you that way...keep it discreet for now.” She ordered the staff as they all went different locations in search of Lawrence.I too looked in a few places. After several minutes of searching, there still wasn’t any trace of him.We had looked all the possible places he could have gone within that short time. Where on earth could he have gone to?“Ma’am, I believe we
VERONICA’S POVI placed my hand into his while holding his gaze as if challenging him to try messing with me.“I like you,” He said when we settled into the yacht.I gave him the are-you-okay kinda look. He laughed, “Not that way actually. I mean I know you are married to my friend. Even though it’s...fake...Oh, and I don’t mean to sound rude or offensive...don’t be mad at me please.”I scoffed and turned away. What is there to be mad about. All he said was the truth after all.I had the urge to ask him about the woman earlier, how much does Lawrence love her to bring her to Maldives during his honeymoon but I swallowed my words back. I wasn’t about to sound like some desperate chick. Especially not to Lawrence’s friend.“She is his lover,” He said as if he read my mind.I glanced at him and turned away again without saying a word.“Ahm, I’m sorry if I went out of line again.”“I’m not angry. Of course I knew he has a woman he loves...it’s just...it’s just that I was taken completely
LAWRENCE’S POVI swore to find out whoever it is that had dared take a picture of Bianca and I. I would make him or her regret it. In the past I never worried when the media carried news about me but now it involves Bianca, I can’t let any of them have her face splattered all over the media and fools going after her. I can’t afford to let her get hurt. Never. All through the journey back home, I couldn’t stop myself from fuming. The happy moment of my life was cut short by some darn reporter. However, the short time I spent with Bianca would live with me forever. I can’t wait for five years to be over and this fake marriage of mine dissolved.“Stay here and wait okay? Charley will come get you and bring you home.” I had told Bianca and hid her where Director Mason wouldn’t find her. She nodded quietly. I pulled her into my arms, “I’m sorry our time was ruined and cut short...”“Okay.”Slowly with unwilling heart, I let go of her and stride out of the place. Stopping at the doorpost,
VERONICA 13Once we got into his office and the door went shut, father walked towards the freezer, opened it and took out a bottle of water which he downed half of it. Then he walked around his desk and settled into his seat. He let out a low grunt and then slowly faced me.He stared hard at me for a few seconds.“Who is she?”I was ready for other questions but definitely not this one.“Not anyone important, father.” I said calmly. He stood from his seat, pushed his seat back and started towards me, face stiffened and gaze locked furiously on me.“You think marriage is a joke? Do you? How long do you plan on denting Williams? How long do you plan on living irresponsibly?!”He was struggling to not roar more than he was already doing. I could see it with the way his eyes shone with rage. His face spoke so many words that he didn’t say. That was father, he wasn’t one to let his anger show. Once he told me one of the virtues he knew he must acquire if he was to continue to build William
LAWRENC’S POVI was on my way to Williams Fashion group. The words of my Uncles ate deep into me. Everyone thinks I preferred to bum around and live a carefree life because I am irresponsible but no one knows my real reason for staying away from my father’s company. It didn’t need to be said directly to me but I knew the day I begin to show interest in Williams group of companies, my life would be in danger. Father loved his brothers, I hate to be the reason he will discover the hate in them. I know how much it would hurt him. But what can I do now, I can’t run away from it anymore. I must protect my life and the life of my family.“We are here, sir.” Jessie announced as he brought the car to a stop.“Oh,” I drew in a breath as his voice pulled me out of my thoughts that had momentarily wandered off. I picked my phone and stepped down from the car. A short rounded man I recognized as the director of the fashion group, suited and standing beside him two other suited men started to appr
WRITER'S POV “Here! Taste this, you will like it,” Tracey offered. Veronica opened her mouth wide and she threw in some sandwiches. “You two don't eat it all without us!” Elsie yelled behind them from the canopy shed. “I thought you wanted to maintain this figure for your fans?” Gail asked Elsie. “So what? I am allowed to add a few pounds,” Elsie retorted. “Then your fans will be mad and unfollow you.” “Hey! How can you say that!” Elsie fumed. “Oh-oh. Is that an angry bird?” Gail taunted. In a sweep, she took to her heels knowing exactly what was coming next. As expected Elsie chased after her threatening to kill her if she caught her. Veronica and Tracey exchanged looks and busted into laughter. When Tracey's phone rang, she stepped aside to take her call. “I will be back,” she flashed Veronica a smile before stepping aside. Veronica closed her eyes, drinking in the freshness of the gentle breeze. She had reconciled with her friends and they were cooler and clo
WRITER'S POVLANDE BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTIONDIRECTOR CHARLEY OFFICECharley closed up the file he was working on, stood and walked to the wooden coat rack. He retrieved his coat and slung his arms into it. A glance at his wristwatch confirmed Benita was already on her way. He didn't want to keep her waiting for long. If his plan was going to work, then he must show the gentleman side of him. That wouldn't need him breaking a lot of sweat. He smirked, stepping away from the rack. There was a bit of a ruffle outside his door which stopped a moment later. The next second, the door flung open and a figure barged in much to his. “Hello old friend. This is where you have been hiding your sinful self the whole time. Not bad.”Charley tried to be calm. “What are you doing here…how do you know I was here?”“Well, don't be so surprised now. You know getting information like this is like a walk in the park for someone like me,” Lawrence smirked, “Director Charley, have a seat. Let's have
WRITER'S POV“There you are…” He breathed in relief. She was seated in a seat and writing inside a notepad, her suitcase beside her. Was she parking or unparking? She looked up when she saw him. “You are back.”He stepped inside, eyes glued to her. He had a lot to say to her but seeing her had his words sinking right back into his stomach. “Uhm, come, there's something I need us to do,” he finally said. She got up. “What is it?” “Outside.”With the flowers tucked behind him, he stepped aside and motioned for her to step out first. Reluctantly, she started out of her room wondering what it was he wanted to show her. “Come in now.”Lawyer Steve entered. “Do you remember him?”Veronica tried to think. Lawyer Steve’s face struck a faintly familiar face to her. But she couldn't fully grasp where she had met him. But it soon began to click. “Wait… that lawyer…”Lawyer Steve grinned pleased that she finally remembered him. “But what is he doing here?” She asked. “Well, I am here
WRITER'S POV“Hello, Uncles.”Jack Williams and Noah Williams turned. “I must be seeing wrong. Isn't this our dear nephew, Noah?” Jack Williams and Noah Williams exchanged astonished looks which quickly morphed into an unpleasant one. “What brings our dearest nephew to a place like this?”“Beats me. His name and pictures are all over the media. He is at a risk of losing his position in the group but he chose to come here instead,” Jack sneered. He looked up at Lawrence. “Are you sure you are at the right place?” Lawrence chuckled. He drew out a seat from an empty table which he pulled to his uncles’ table and sat down. “Well, it hasn't been easy for me these past days, no thanks to someone,” he stated calmly as he poured himself a drink. Both Noah and Jack Williams exchanged another look and busted into laughter.“But, don't you think you are being rude right now? There are empty tables. What makes you think you can sit at the same table with us? Your mother truly didn't teach you
WRITER'S POV“Should I take you back to the house or to the office, sir?”“No, we just got started. I should see my Uncles. Find out where they are right now.”“Sir?” Jessie blurted in shock. “Hurry up Jessie. We don't have time.”“Yes sir.” Jessie made a call to both Noah and Jack's secretaries and they confirmed the two weren't in office. When he called their homes, it turned out they weren't home either. “They are not home either,” Jessie reported. Lawrence's eyes crinkled into a pleased glint. “This is good,” he breathed, “I think I have an idea where they might be,” he smirked and got into the car. Minutes later, they stopped in front of a bar. “Chad exotic.” Jessie mumbled out loud. He frowned and looked at his boss. Surely he had made a mistake. Chad Exotic, a known average bar that could be likened to be a dangerous place for anyone in the category of weak to be in. Drug use, gambling, illegal business exchanges and illegal partnership happened to be the major activi
WRITER'S POV“Lawrence… you are here. “ Bianca gasped. Carefully, she lowered her sleeping child into the cradle, ran to Lawrence and embraced him. “I knew you would come. No matter how mad you must have been about what I did, I knew you loved me and still…”Lawrence jerked off her body. The fact that she was still disillusioned irritated him. She reached forward and grabbed his hands. Tears clouded her eyes. “You know, everything I did was because I loved you. I couldn't bear to live without you. I regretted hurting you and I wanted to make amends.”He sneered. “Love me? What a load of crap.” Then snatched his hands away. “I swear it. I really loved you…no, I really love you even this moment, Lawrence.”“Unfortunately I am in love with another person now. Save your love.”“That bitch?” “Watch your mouth now. I ain't here to chit chat with you,” he warned sternly. She stepped back, disappointed. “Why have you come then? To mock me? After filing a lawsuit against me? I know you
LAWRENCE'S POVI didn't know it was going to hurt that much… hearing Veronica agree with father's suggestion of us breaking up. Had she felt nothing for me this whole time? Does she not see how crazy she has made me? She had changed me and now she wanted things to end between us. The torture was too much. My heart twisted painfully. I watched her until she got into her room. I was confused, scared and worried. I had failed my parents and wanted to make things right again in whatever way. But losing Veronica? That was never part of my plans.I couldn't lose her now just when my innocence has been proved that I never got Bianca pregnant. I wanted her. I wanted to be with her. I wanted to tell her how much I missed her while she was away and how much I wanted the truth to be out sop I will be with her. “Charley… that bastard…”I took out my phone and called Jessie. “Invite a reporter over to the house.”I told him then I got into my car and drove off. “Jeez man! You look a mess!”Ca
VERONICA'S POVAfter Chairman Williams and his wife left, I slumped into the seat. I couldn't breathe. In the last minutes, I couldn't breathe. I had always imagined this day. I did but I never imagined my heart feeling this wrenched. I stared at Lawrence. He was up on his feet looking at the window almost restlessly. What was going on in his head?I wondered why he never told me he found out the child wasn't his. Was he ever going to tell me if this didn't happen?Perhaps he never would have. Perhaps he had gotten comfortable with his ex-girlfriend while I was away. I felt my throat dry and ended up swallowing hard, burning my throat in the process. “Sir, the reporters are headed here. They have gotten a wind of your residence,”Jessie announced. Lawrence let out a frustrated sigh. “We have to leave now. The reporters will soon flood here,” he told me. “I will pick a few of my things,” I said as I stood up and went into my room. On my way out I heard Jessie telling him the rep
WRITER'S POVWhile they waited for Lawrence to arrive, Mrs Williams phone started to ring. “What!” The next second she hung up the call and got into the Internet. “My goodness…” she plopped to the seat. Veronica rushed over to her side. “Mother…ma'am, is everything alright? Are you okay?”“How can I be okay? How can I be alright? Where is Lawrence!” Mrs Williams growled. “Take, have a look.”Veronica collected her phone and the news flashed before her eyes. She gasped. It's over. It's really over. Shit… this is all messed up.She looked at Bianca who had quickly gotten onto the Internet. With the smirk on her face, Veronica could tell she had seen the news. “What am I going to do?” Mrs Williams stood, panicking. She already knew what his husband's brothers would be planning. Her phone rang nonstop. When it wasn't ringing, it was beeping indicating the entrance of messages. “Whoever did this…I have you to thank.” Bianca smirked. The news about her and Lawrence was all over t
