A lady presented a file to an older woman. The older woman looked at her with a bit of disgust before she reluctantly collected the file from the lady.
“Ma’am, the director sent this as exclusive as it concerned Chairman Williams of Williams Group and the Las Group...”
Hearing that it concerned Chairman Williams of Williams Group and Las Group immediately got the disgust in her face to disappear.
“Oh, the director sent this...”
“Yes ma’am. His secretary sent it over minutes ago.”
“Minutes ago? And why am I just getting it now?” she raised her voice a bit.
The younger lady dipped her head and apologized. “I’m sorry ma’am.”
“Go.” She shooed her away before she opened the file. If she must get the promotion she sorely craved, then she knew she had to do more than just suck up to the director to make it happen fast.
“Oh my world!” she literally screamed as her eyes read through the content of the file she had been given.
“How can this be...” she muttered in disbelief. However, she stood from her seat and headed to the main room.
“Here, report this now.” She told the reporter and handed the file to one of the reporters.
Minutes later, the news of soon to happen marriage between the heir of Williams Group and the second daughter of the Las Group spread. While some people wondered why the two business companies would make such announcement as it had never been rumored for the pair to be in any sort of relationship, some rumored that one of them could be going under while others think it could just be to strengthen their roots in the business world like other companies does. There were also others that thought it was too sudden and definitely had a hidden meaning. Another set were the ones in a one- sided love especially the ladies crushing on Lawrence that fell into sadness.
Yet others wondered why any family would let their daughter get married to an infamous playboy.
Veronica was chatting with her friends on that day when the news spread, without the slightest hint of what was going on.
“Girls, who is in, let’s do some vacation.” Elsie suggested with excitement. “I feel like my skin has been damn stressed these days and really think we should just cool off, come on girls, what do you say?”
“I’m in...” Gail started to say but stopped halfway. Her eyes widened as she stared into her phone. “Urh...what is this?” she mumbled slowly looking up to meet Veronica’s face.
Veronica frowned, “What is it this time?”
“Veronica...look...” she held up her phone to Veronica’s face. The news of her and Lawrence Williams was trending in the internet with the pictures of the day they had met at the hotel. Someone had captured them in camera.
“Fuvk!”
“Did you know about this?” Gail asked.
“No, what we should be asking right now is, is this...really true, are you getting married to him?” Elsie added.
Veronica had never been cornered in her entire life in this manner before. She was going to tell her friends soon and didn’t want them to find out in this manner. How could the news be spreading already...?
“Look girls, please, don’t panic...”
“Of course we are not, we trust you. Why would you ever agree to marry the infamous playboy...Gail right? You don’t believe this too.” Elsie laughed.
Gail nodded, “Yes, Vero, you have to make your parents sue this reporter. Asssh! All they do these days is report fake news just to create traffic.”
Veronica felt her tongue glued to the roof of her mouth and her body still as she heard her friends say with so much conviction that she would never agree to marry the playboy and at that moment she just wished she didn’t have to marry Lawrence Williams. She wished her family’s business wasn’t going down, then she wouldn’t need to do this. Seeing them expressed their trust in her without knowing the news was right made her felt really bad.
Tracey stomped in almost at that time.
“You! have you always liked him behind my back? have you always wished to backstab me while keeping a pretty face with us and deceiving us all huh!”
“Calm down, Tracey, Veronica would never do that. Besides you don’t think the news is true right?” Elsie defended Veronica.
“Vero, say something. Tell Tracey the news is fake.” Gail added.
Veronica’s lips parted but words refused to come out. Where exactly was she supposed to start from? Even if she told them, would they believe her?
Tracey scoffed, “Fake? You all know nothing about this bitch. See, she can’t even say anything because the news is true!”
At that moment, Veronica knew she had to come clean and chest whatever her friends would throw at her.
“Yes, the news is true...”
“What???” the three girls gaped in shock.Tracey charged at her furiously. “How could you do this to me...you bitchy friend!”
“Look Tracey, I more than anyone wish nothing of such would happen...”“What? You think I would believe you huh? You are just a sneaky bitch who goes behind her friends to snatch the man she loves! Tell me, did you seduce him? Did you say terrible things about me to him to make him like you? Tell me, since when have you been deceiving us! I hate you! And I will make sure you regret this!” Tracey gnashed before stomping out of the place.Elsie and Gail, still dumbfounded watched helplessly.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen...Elsie, Gail, believe me.”
“You always hated him, so why...have you always tried to stop Tracey from liking him because you had feelings for him too? Even if so, Veronica, how could you do this to her. She is your friend and you know she loved him a lot...I expected better from you.” Gail said and shook her head.
“We thought you were crazy about Vincent...We were supposed to be friends and not hurt each other.” Elsie said, disappointment lacing her tone.
Veronica swallowed hard. How was she going to tell them this whole thing was merely an arranged marriage and she was going to divorce him after five years? How would she tell them she was doing this to save her family’s business and not because she liked anything about him?
She watched as Gail and Elsie walked out leaving her alone in the place.
She feared she might have lost her friends. She made a mental note to explain everything to them at night in their group chat but first she must hurry and see Vincent. How come he hadn’t called her since the news got released. She feared he would be disappointed with her too.
She dashed out of the place and headed for Vincent’s house. She put him on dial mode as she drove while hoping he wouldn’t be mad at her like her girlfriends were.
VERONICA It was my wedding day. I had still thought it was all a joke and at some point, I had even laughed the imagination of it off but standing before the gigantic mirror in the wedding preparation room starring at myself in it, cladded in a long flowing white sparkling wedding dress and a face I struggled a bit to recognize as mine, it all began to register in my head. I must say I looked quite pretty in my make over and all. “How is it? do you like it?” my stylist snuck up behind me and asked with anxious expectant eyes. For every woman, this was supposed to be their happiest day or maybe one of it but for me, this was my worst day. Getting married to a man I not only barely knew but a man I could say I detested. A playboy. My friends were still super mad at me, my boyfriend had walked out on me days back with a disappointed look that scared the shit out of me and here I was being shoved into the den of a lion. “Ma’am? Ma’am?” The voice of the stylist pulled me back from my
VERONICAA not-so large gathering was allowed for the wedding ceremony where only those allowed in was strictly on invitation bases. After I changed into an equally pretty red dress, I sat down in my seat. A toast was made and the huge cake was cut by me and Lawrence. Followed by gifts, gifts and gifts. A lot of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t care about any of them gifts. My eyes kept darting around, there were a lot of rich men and women of affluence present. A good number of them I usually see in the television. Dad had me say Hello to some of them. Gosh, I smiled until my cheeks nearly peeled off!Of course, the media was allowed in to take the full coverage of the wedding. They were just everywhere, capturing just anything happening. I doubted they would miss a thing that happened. I imagined the headlines...the infamous playboy married. I couldn’t begin to imagine the looks of his crushes and the women he played around with.Chairman Williams stood up to give a speech. He looked el
VERONICA “Here ma’am, what you asked for.” Catherine handed me an album. A picture album of the Williams family. After what I observed in the dining table, I became curious. There was something cold going on that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I was fully aware every family had their issues, imagine how much issues there will be in a conglomerate family. “Thank you, you may leave.” I discharged her as I took the album and walked into a room. I sat on the bed and opened the picture album. An elderly man and woman first met my eyes. “Mr Williams and his wife....” Lawrence grand-parents, now late. According to stories in the internet, it was known that Mr Williams and Lawrence’s father, Max, now Chairman Williams had jointly found the Williams group of companies. They had started out small with only the construction company and grew the company big. After the death of Mr Williams, Max Williams, his first son and co-founder had taken over and became chairman of the Williams group
VERONICA 8LAWRENCE POVMother herself had woken me up on the day of my so-called wedding. I nearly slept in.I was cladded in an Armani suit and as usual looked dripping hot. At the wedding, I waited up as my bride to be was led towards me by my soon to be father-in-law. It all was happening so fast I wished I was dreaming instead. Thoughts of Bianca filtered in and I held myself back. I had spoken to her over the phone the previous night and assured her I had no atom of affection for my supposed bride. Bianca didn’t mind, she is so understanding and my love for her increased. I just couldn’t wait for the whole thing to be over so I could go see her. God, I have missed her so much. Why did life have to be so unfair...why did I have to get into this lie of a marriage just when my long time crush accepted my love...why...why...As she walked towards me, my eyes caught her full length, my bride. She looked quite beautiful but when our eyes met, we both was however scoffing with disgust
VERONICA POV“Holy shit!!’ he screamed and next I went landing with a thud on the floor.I clenched my teeth holding back my groan.“This bastard...” I gritted under my breath.“Em!...” he towered over me, a hint of remorse in his face. Not like I cared about the remorse in his face.He offered his hand to help me up but I shot him a glare ignoring his hand and rising to my feet on my own.“I totally forgot I would be seeing a total stranger in the same bed with me...this morning...I was startled. Did that hurt?” he smirked.“Good morning to you too.” I slammed and walked straight into the bathroom, scowling.“No, no, don’t get in, I need to....” He screamed as I was getting into the bathroom but before he could get to the door, I had gotten in and bolted the door from inside. Seeing he was desperate to use the bathroom, a wicked idea popped up in me.It’s payback time, husband! After I finished with my business which lasted only but briefly, I relaxed in there doing absolutely nothin
VERONICA’S POV“He was just sitting right here a moment ago...where could he have gone to?” I said as Ms Patricia and I started to search around for Lawrence. A thought of how serious he had looked as he fiddled with his phone earlier on flashed in my head. Could it be something serious had happened?“Don’t panic ma’am, we will find your husband, I promise. He probably left on his own...This place is well secured.”“Of course, we will find him...” I muttered as my eyes strayed all over the place. Ms Patricia had made the dance and the show to pause as we secretly searched for Lawrence.“You, go this way...you...this way and you that way...keep it discreet for now.” She ordered the staff as they all went different locations in search of Lawrence.I too looked in a few places. After several minutes of searching, there still wasn’t any trace of him.We had looked all the possible places he could have gone within that short time. Where on earth could he have gone to?“Ma’am, I believe we
VERONICA’S POVI placed my hand into his while holding his gaze as if challenging him to try messing with me.“I like you,” He said when we settled into the yacht.I gave him the are-you-okay kinda look. He laughed, “Not that way actually. I mean I know you are married to my friend. Even though it’s...fake...Oh, and I don’t mean to sound rude or offensive...don’t be mad at me please.”I scoffed and turned away. What is there to be mad about. All he said was the truth after all.I had the urge to ask him about the woman earlier, how much does Lawrence love her to bring her to Maldives during his honeymoon but I swallowed my words back. I wasn’t about to sound like some desperate chick. Especially not to Lawrence’s friend.“She is his lover,” He said as if he read my mind.I glanced at him and turned away again without saying a word.“Ahm, I’m sorry if I went out of line again.”“I’m not angry. Of course I knew he has a woman he loves...it’s just...it’s just that I was taken completely
LAWRENCE’S POVI swore to find out whoever it is that had dared take a picture of Bianca and I. I would make him or her regret it. In the past I never worried when the media carried news about me but now it involves Bianca, I can’t let any of them have her face splattered all over the media and fools going after her. I can’t afford to let her get hurt. Never. All through the journey back home, I couldn’t stop myself from fuming. The happy moment of my life was cut short by some darn reporter. However, the short time I spent with Bianca would live with me forever. I can’t wait for five years to be over and this fake marriage of mine dissolved.“Stay here and wait okay? Charley will come get you and bring you home.” I had told Bianca and hid her where Director Mason wouldn’t find her. She nodded quietly. I pulled her into my arms, “I’m sorry our time was ruined and cut short...”“Okay.”Slowly with unwilling heart, I let go of her and stride out of the place. Stopping at the doorpost,
