**This is Book 4 of the Guardians Next Generation series and Book 8 of the overall Guardian series. References will be made to events in other books and may not be fully explained in this novel.

My phone rings unusually early in the morning.

“Hello.”

“Hey, Leana. Want to go on a road trip to Araphyra with me?” Lily, my best friend for my entire life, asks through the phone.

Lily is the oldest child of Rik and Cara Forte, the Alpha and Luna of Canyon Ridge Pack. I am the oldest daughter and second child of Liam and Angel Holstin, the previous Alpha and Luna of my pack, Shadow Falls. The third pack in our alliance, Safe Haven Pack, is run by Alpha Eli and Luna Grace, that is, until their oldest son, Emerson, takes over in a few months.

Lily and I were born about six months apart and we are both Guardians. My mother and our Aunt Grace have wolves that were blessed by the Moon Goddess with a Guardian spirit. The Guardian spirits had been transferred from generation to generation, creating new Guardians every time one of the two Guardians died.

That all changed when Lily’s mother, Cara, was born out of a fated mate bond between the two existing Guardians at the time, Clint and Lily, my friend Lily’s namesake. When Aunt Cara’s parents died, their Guardian spirits went to my mother and Aunt Grace. None of us are actually related, but our mothers consider themselves Guardian sisters, so we call them Aunt, their mates Uncle, and we’ve all been raised together as family.

In my parents’ generation, both Guardians were able to mark and mate with their fated mates, rather than greedy Alphas that previously forced the Guardians into mate bonds because of the power that we wield.

Now, in our generation, every Alpha female born to a Guardian parent has the powers of a Guardian, making us as strong or stronger than our Alpha brothers and every other supernatural being.

Since I know that Lily has been having issues with her mate, the Elf Prince, Aolis, I know that something is wrong.

“What happened, Lily?”

She tells me she’ll fill me in on the way and after finding out that she wants to leave today and in wolf form, I quickly pack a bag that I can wear while in my wolf, Kella’s, form and then go to find my brother. Rich is the Alpha of our pack, having taken over a year ago from our father.

I've been his acting Luna for the past year, but since he’s been messing around with another Guardian, Emlyn, I’m pretty sure he won’t be too terribly upset that I want to leave. If he’s smart, and he usually is, he’ll see about making her his acting Luna.

I find Rich and let him know that I’m going with Lily to Araphyra, the land of the elves.

“Why now?” he asks me.

I grit my teeth. He’s my brother, but he’s also my Alpha. I may not want to tell him, but he would never betray me, not as my brother and not as my Alpha.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to find my mate, Rich. It’s been six months and I haven’t found him. He’s obviously not in any of our three packs. Maybe….maybe if I go with Lily, I’ll find him. Who knows, maybe he’s in Araphyra,” I say with false bravado.

He looks at me a long moment before moving around his desk and coming to sit with me.

“If you need anything, anything at all from me, you call me, I’ll be there in a moment. I know I’m your Alpha, but I’m also your brother and I love you, Lea. So, you take care of yourself and keep in touch. Have you told mom and dad?”

I pluck at my shirt. “No. You know how Dad is, he won’t want me to go, even if I’m going with Lily.”

“I’ll let him know, but you’d better call him in a couple of days or it’s possible he’ll burn the world down to find you,” he says, making me smile. My father is a good man, and a good father, even if he’s overbearing. I may not be his only daughter, but I am his first daughter.

“Thanks, Rich. And, uhh…you know, Emlyn might be able to fill in for me while I’m gone,” I say as casually as I can.

Because I’m watching him closely, I see the quick narrowing of his eyes before he schools his features.

“I don’t know what she’s got going on. She may have found her mate by now, but…I’ll think about it.”

“Yeah, I bet you will,” I say, standing.

He pulls me in for a hug. “Seriously, Lea, if you need anything, you call me.”

“I will. Promise.”

I head outside and just as I reach the pack borders, Lily arrives. We shift quickly and take off running. We head toward Araphyra for a couple of hours before we stop to eat. When we do, I make Lily tell me what’s going on and I find out that some Alpha she went out with kissed her, and her mate, Aolis, felt it. He has given her one week to come to Araphyra and claim him as her mate or he’s going to go find someone else to be his queen.

Personally, I don’t understand why Lily wasn’t willing to accept Aolis right away when she turned 18 and realized that he is her mate. She’s known her whole life that he was her mate and from everything I’ve heard, the mate bond is incredible. But according to Lily, Aolis felt like a brother, not a mate.

She feels too close to her mate, and I can’t even find mine.

I know we have a long way to go and several pack lands and the vampire’s clan, King Urien’s lands, to pass through, but if all goes well, we shouldn’t have any problems getting to Araphyra on time.

“If we have time, and only if we have time, I’d like to stop by the council on our way. It’s past time that I take up my seat on the council and release mom from her tenure,” I say.

“Where will you live? Will you commute to and from the pack?” Lily asks me.

“No, I’ve already been searching for a condo in town, near the council chambers. I can live there when the council is in session and return home when it isn’t. That is, unless I meet my mate and have to move to Araphyra like some people,” I say, smiling at her.

“I’m so nervous, Lea. What if I hate it? What if I’m terrible at being a queen?” she says.

“Lils, you were born to be a queen. The Moon Goddess wouldn’t have mated you to the elvish prince if you weren’t. You’ll be amazing, but don’t expect me to call you Your Majesty or something like that. You’ll always be Lils to me,” I tell her.

“Good, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she says as we finish eating. “Come on, let’s get going.”

We run for a couple more hours before we come to our first pack border. When we arrive, we run into a delay as the Alpha asks us if he can use our Guardian gifts to tell if a rogue is lying. Since that’s a Guardian gift that I got from my mother and we have plenty of time, we agree.

We quickly realize that this rogue was part of a group that recently attacked Rich’s pack in Shadow Falls in an attempt to kill the Guardians. They lost, of course, Guardians aren’t easy to kill, but there are still some out there who would prefer that our kind of power didn’t exist.

Worse than that, we find out that this rogue is second in command to a vampire which means that at least some vampires are once again fighting against the Guardians.

The vampires call us Custos Regni, or Guardians of the Realm. It’s an apt description, but the problem is, there is something in our blood, something so appealing and addicting that when a vampire tastes our blood, they can’t control themselves and they try to drain us dry.

My mother, as a teenager, was captured by vampires and taken to their King. There, she was kept for seven years as a blood bag, forced every night into a ‘feeding room’ where humans were brought in for vampires to feed on, rape and kill. She was forced to watch as the humans were drained dry while the vampire king fed off of her, night after night. It wasn’t until the vampire coven was raided by hunters that my mother escaped. The hunters thought she was a human and got her out of there. When she realized she’d gone from one bad situation to another, she ran until exhausted and near death, she fell across my father’s pack lands. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, this werewolf, who is a Beta of sorts, has let us know that he’s working for the vampires which can only mean that they are once again turning against the Guardians.

Lily and I decide to take this information to the council, knowing that it is important and valuable information, especially in light of the recent attack on Shadow Falls. The Alpha gives us a place to stay overnight and then we head to the council.

I’ve been on a mission for my grandfather for several months. He sent me on what feels like a wild goose chase looking for a girl. He told me she was a teenager and a vampire, but he didn’t tell me anything more than that. Now, after several months of looking, I’ve come up with my last dead end. I’ve run out of leads and I have to return home to tell my grandfather that I failed him.I sleep through the day, waiting for the sun to set before I begin making my way home. Unlike most vampires, I’m a royal and therefore, I can walk in the daylight, but it’s uncomfortable. My eyes are very light sensitive, and my pale skin burns easily, so I prefer to move at night. As I get closer to home, to my grandfather’s clan and his lands, I get a bad feeling. The last couple of times that I called my grandfather, he didn’t answer. And for once, he didn't call me back. It’s now been a few weeks and I haven’t heard from him. It’s another reason I’ve decided to come home. I need to make sure that he’s

Our trip to the council has been weird. First, we were made to wait for nearly an hour, then Alpha Wyatt, the only councilmember in attendance basically dismissed our concern that vampires and werewolves were working together. If anything, he looked excited about the thought that someone was going against the Guardians.I put in my notice to take over for my mother, knowing it will take a couple of months for the paperwork to process. This gives me time to get to Araphyra with Lily, make sure all is well before returning back here and taking my mother’s place on the council.I call Rich that night and fill him in on the weird interaction with Alpha Wyatt.“Do you need any help?” he asks me.“No. Lily and I are leaving tomorrow, but we have to pass through King Urien’s lands.”“King Urien has always been a friend to the Guardians, and he used to sit on the council. Now it’s his son until he grandson takes over,” he says.“Yes, Councilman Lance is his name. I believe the son’s name is D

I’m digging through what’s left of my grandfather’s papers. Giovanni and possibly my father seem to have gone through everything. I swipe the papers onto the floor just as Giovanni comes to the door.“Prince Drake, your father has requested your presence for dinner.”“I bet he did,” I respond without looking at him. With hands on hips, I look around the room. My grandfather was smart enough not to leave something like this out where my father or Giovanni would find it. So where would he have put it.“I’m happy to escort you to dinner,” Giovanni says.“You can tell my father that I won’t be joining him for dinner tonight or any night,” i say. When he once again doesn’t move, I turn to him. I make shooing gestures with my hands and have the pleasure of watching his eyes narrow.“Now run along, like the good little errand boy that you are, and tell him that I won’t be coming.”Giovanni snarls, but turns and races off to tell my father of my insolence, no doubt.I begin going around the r

The moment Drake walked into that hideous feeding room, I knew I’d found my mate. Of all the places, in all the world, I found him here. When our eyes locked, I realized that my mate is the worst possible option of a mate for me, a vampire. The Moon Goddess must have a sick sense of humor. However, as the night went on, I realized that Drake is more like his grandfather, not his father. And while I’m not thrilled that my mate is a vampire, Lily encouraged me not to make the same mistakes that she’s made with hers.“Give him a chance, Lea. Don’t judge him too quickly,” she had said as we got ready for bed. I had pulled his sweatshirt over my head and nearly moaned out loud at his scent. I never gave much thought to the scent of ice, but it is interesting to me that Lily is mated to a Prince that smells like snow and now I find that I’m mated to a Prince that smells like ice. Maybe it's some kind of royalty thing.I’m sure Lily has noticed all of my not-so-casual glances at Drake tonigh

The moment Leana’s warm lips touch my cold ones, and her wild yet floral scent floods my nose, my fangs come out, slicing through her lower lip. I’m up and across the room before I make the mistake of tasting her blood that is now resting in warm droplets on my lips. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that,” she says. But I’m facing away from her, afraid that if she sees my blood lust for her, that it will all be over, and I’ll never get to prove to her that I can be the kind of mate she deserves. “I just…I wasn’t prepared and…” I glance over my shoulder, seeing her pressing her finger over her lip. “Are you alright?” “Yes. I heal quickly.” I nod, turning away. Unable to resist any longer, I lick her blood off my lips and the ecstasy that flows through my body is overwhelming. It takes everything in me not to fly to her and sink my teeth into her neck, sucking more of the most delicious blood I’ve ever tasted in my life. I lift my head, trying to get control of my emotions and my

We begin running again. Kella runs beside me and we begin to make a game of who can more easily navigate the land in the forest. I’m impressed over and over again at her grace and strength as she leaps as easily over fallen trees as I do. Even when I playfully push her to try to get ahead of her, she’s right back, catching me quickly and nipping at my heels. Our afternoon run is the most fun I ever remember having in my life. It’s sundown when we stop for the night. I can see Lily wants to push on, but they both need to eat and get some sleep. I, myself, haven’t slept in over 48 hours and I desperately need some rest. We find a place, up on a hill, where we can keep watch overnight. Kella and Hera catch a couple of rabbits to eat and even from here, the scent of the blood makes my mouth water. I don’t even like the taste of rabbit blood, but I’ve waited too long to feed. If I wasn’t so exhausted, I’d go find a large animal that I could drink from, but right now, I’m not sure I could

I begin coming in and out of consciousness, not sure why I feel so weak. I reach out to Kella and feel that she’s just as weak as I am. ‘Kella, what happened?’ I ask. ‘Mate,” is all she says before I’m out again. When I finally open my eyes, I can’t tell what time of day it is, as the sun is filtering through the trees above. Lily is sitting next to me. “Lils?” “Leana! Oh goddess! How are you feeling?” “Weak, what happened?” I ask, still feeling like I have a fog in my brain. She looks past me and I turn my head, seeing Drake sitting far away. “Leana,” I hear him say, his voice sounding like a sob. He gets up and leaves, making me worried that I’ll never see him again. “What were you thinking, Lea?” “About what, exactly?” I ask, still feeling fuzzy. “You let him feed on you,” she hisses at me and everything comes flooding back. The moment Drake tasted my blood, I felt the power in him begin to push against me and Kella. It hadn’t taken long before I realized we were in troub

We push hard all day the next day, only stopping for food, and it isn’t until well into the night that we stop to rest. I’m tired again, but since Drake and Lily let me sleep last night, I agree to take the first shift. Drake lays next to where I’m sitting by the fire. He lays beside me, holding my hand and putting it up against his face, so he can smell my scent. I’m looking down, watching him sleep when I hear a twig snap. I jerk my head up, lifting my nose into the air. I can’t smell anything, but the wind is at my back. I disengage my hand from Drake’s and stand. Besides my mother’s Guardian gift of being able to tell when someone is lying, my strongest Guardian gift is being able to sense auras. I push out and suddenly, I can see the auras of a pack of wolves that have surrounded us and are closing in. I howl a warning as I leap and shift, jumping at the first wolf that breaks through the trees around us. Another comes up behind him and then several others come running out fro

One hundred and fifty years later I think Lily said it right. She called it a price, a price you have to pay for being mated to an immortal. I have paid more prices than I ever realized I would have to pay when I accepted Drake as my mate. It’s not that I would ever change my decision, even over a century later I still love my mate more than anything. If possible, our love has only increased with time. But saying goodbye to your loved ones is never easy. First there was my mother. She became ill, something only very old werewolves and Guardians do. Because we knew she was dying, all of her children and grandchildren were there when she passed away. My father held her, crying his silent tears as he told her that he loved her, that she had always been the love of his life and that there was never anyone who could have made him happier than she did. She had died in his arms and all of us had cried, holding each other and lamenting our loss. My mate was among those, crying his blood tea

  • Arch Enemies   Epilogue 1: Drake

Two Months Later My mate and I have gotten into a routine of working at the castle and managing our vampire clan, then spending time at our home on the outskirts of the city when Leana needs to be in the city for the council. It wasn’t long before Mehira was pregnant and with how often she growls, I wasn’t at all surprised to hear that she’s having a boy. A boy who is obviously an Alpha werewolf male. We have confirmed that Leana is having a boy too and while none of the tests can tell us that our son has the vampire gene, Leana’s need for bloody meat has led everyone to believe that she’s having a vampire hybrid. Because Alpha Leonardo’s pack is closer, his pack doctor has been monitoring Leana during her pregnancy. Honestly, it’s been easier than I expected, possibly due to Lucero’s blessing over Leana and our child. Ennata and Demetrius have joined the witch faction that is working for Holstin Enterprises. While she doesn’t have the ability to work for them full time, being Lea

We didn’t wait too long before going to visit my family. King Reyes and Marlene joined us, as did Demetrius and Ennata. She wanted to meet Maeve. We went to my brother’s pack first, making sure to let the pack know to expect three vampires on the pack lands. It was still tense until mom greeted us at the packhouse and hugged Drake, smiling up at him happily. After that, it was as if the pack relaxed. I didn’t realize that they all still felt such a sense of protectiveness over my mother, but I guess once a wolf is your Luna, they are always your Luna. Or maybe, it’s just my mother. She seems to elicit that response from those around her, my mate included. Maeve and Ennata hit it off right away, both of them having difficult childhoods and both being witches. They talked a long time about Levana and how she has mistreated both of them. I took the time to talk to Xander about everything that had happened between me and Drake, including my own coronation. “You didn’t think to invite

My mate and I quickly get into a routine of ruling over our vampire clan. We begin to make plans to visit the packs and to visit the fae land. Leana doesn’t like it, but she does find a way to eat real food and still feed on me to fulfil her need for blood. I know it’s only temporary, but I love my mate feeding on me, wanting me, needing me, the same way that I want and need her. It took a couple of days until we saw Ennata and Demetrius again. I heard that food was being sent to their bedroom and I definitely heard enough screeching and banging to know that Demetruis was doing his best bond my sister to him. When they finally emerged from the bedroom, Ennata seemed much more calm that she did when she arrived. “Do I take this to mean that you’re staying?” I ask her when she and Demetrius come into the office that Leana and I now share. She looks at Demetrius. “Try to deny me my love, I dare you,” Demetrius says to her. Ennata grits her teeth but pulls her turtleneck away from her

I wake up warm, wrapped in my mate’s arms. However, as I wake, I realize that I’m stiff. I open my eyes and sit up, realizing that Drake has been holding me while I slept all day. “Hello baby,” I say, tilting my neck and feeling the release as it cracks, then stretching my back and feeling the cracks down my spine as well. “How long have I been asleep?” “Most of the day. I was just about to wake you so I can get you fed before we begin to make our way home,” Drake says, smiling at me. “Food, mmmmm,” I say, then I remember and my head whips around to see Ennata sitting with us. “Hey,” I say to her. “Hey,” she says. “Do you sleep?” I ask her. “Not really, it’s more of a deep meditation.” “What about food? Do you eat or do you drink blood.” “Both. I can survive off of either one.” “Preference?” I ask as I stand, feeling every joint in my body cracking from so many hours of being in the same position. “I like blood,” she says. “Well, I need real food and since I’m pregnant and

The moment I caught her scent, I went after her. This time, I’m prepared. I won’t let her get away. “Ennata!” I yell as she runs. In response, she throws a ball of magic my way. I notice that hers is a lighter color than the other witches, not quite white, not quite purple, something in between, almost a lilac color. I duck the magic as I chase her, hearing Leana behind us, trying to catch up. “Ennata, please. I just want to talk to you,” I say. “Yeah, just like everyone else!” she yells, tossing multiple balls of magic at me this time. “I’m done being locked up!” “I have no intention of locking you up.” “Then you want to sink your fangs into me and bleed me dry, no thanks,” she yells, sending more magic over her shoulder. “I have a mate. Believe me when I tell you that no one’s blood tastes better to me than hers,” I say, leaping over fallen trees and branches that magically move into my way as I approach them. “Prove it,” she yells. “I would if you’d stop running. After my coronation, Drake and I sat down with the Alphas and Lunas of the packs, including my two sisters and my brother, and also with Aolis and Lily. King Reyes joined us with his mate, Marlene, and together we formed an alliance unlike any alliance that has ever been created before. “While our new alliance allows vampires onto our lands, I’d prefer to get my people used to it by having the two of you, or even the four of you, come for a visit first,” King Aolis. “I would love to visit the fairy tale lands,” Marlene says. “The fae lands, love,” Reyes gently corrects her. “Are they not the same?” she asks, looking from Reyes to Aolis. “Not exactly. A fairy tale land is a fake world that humans created for books. The fae land has many fae creatures but it is ruled by the elves,” Aolis explains. “But, there are leprechauns, giants, and unicorns, right?” she asks excitedly. “Just one, unicorn, Lucero,” Lily tells her. “There were many prophecies about my mate,” Aolis says, smili

I make sure there is food available for when they wake up, and for the rest of the morning the clan and I make our preparations for the ceremony and the party afterward. “Do you need some help?” Reyes asks, coming up beside me. I turn and look at him. “Did you do this with your mate? Make her your Queen?” “Not yet, but after this, I’m sure she’ll expect it.” “Because you didn’t already have a plan in place to make her your Queen?” I ask, jokingly. “Actually, I’m trying to convince her not to change. The week without Drake goes by quickly. Whether it’s because she knows that it’s hard for me to be away from my mate or because she’s trying to pack months of shopping into a few days, my mother makes sure that I fall into bed exhausted every night. My time in the council is great. I love learning all about how to make our decisions, and Riley, Mehira and I are taking this time to get to know each other better. It’s great because I know in the future, I can invite them to stay with me when they’re in town. Or, if they choose to stay elsewhere, we’ll still be able to spend time together. Riley and Mehira hit it off right away and I invited Mehira to stay with me this week while she’s in town. She declined because Alpha Leonardo came with her this week, wanting to make sure that his new Luna was safe. The second night, I had everyone over for dinner and Alpha Leonardo and dad went around my property. When they returned, Alpha Leonardo looked at Mehira. “We need to find a house like th
