Chapter 5

Marcus stared at me immediately. There were flashes of shock, fear, and uneasiness in his eyes.

I forced out a smile. "You know what I'm like. I've never lied to you. Besides, I don't know how to act. After all, you of all people know how tiring it is to put up an act, right?"

Marcus didn't doubt me at all. He believed every word I said, just like how I once believed he'd remain loyal to me forever.

But based on how things have progressed until now, we were no longer the same version of ourselves when we first met.

Marcus started panting heavily all of a sudden. His eyes teared up as well.

He rushed up to me and hugged me. "Stop talking about it, Jo! Please, just stop talking about it! You won't die! I won't let you die!"

I shoved Marcus away in response. I watched impassively as he collapsed onto the spread of glass shards on the floor.

His embrace used to bring me warmth and comfort. Now, it brought me nothing but disgust.

Marcus couldn't care less about the fresh injuries
