With a heavy heart, Mavis left the hospital without saying another word. Being blessed by a child could have been the best thing she could ever receive, however, her heart sank as the image of her husband crossed her mind. She was simply worried about how he would react if he heard about the baby. On her way home, she was debating if she should inform him of her pregnancy or if she should keep it to herself as of the moment. Holding the cold wedding ring on her finger, Mavis could only let out a heavy sigh as she came to a temporary decision.
Upon reaching the mansion, which she thought was unnecessarily too spacious for her and her husband to live in because it made her feel lonelier, she received a rather unexpected call from her adoptive mother, Mrs. Charter.
“Mom,” she said upon answering, “is there-”
Even before she could finish what she had to say, Mrs. Charter cut her off with her usual sharp tone of voice.
“Where are you right now?” she asked.
“I am at home.”
“What are your plans tomorrow?”
This made Mavis knit her eyebrows because it was so unlikely of her mother to suddenly ask her of the things she would do. She was simply used to them ignoring her almost every time that she found it odd for them to even call her.
“I… uhm… I will be here at the mansion to prepare for our anniversary.”
At the other end of the line, a devil’s smile was formed on the lips of Mrs. Charter.
“Good. Be a good and obedient wife. Make sure that this time, Grayson won’t be disappointed.”
Without even waiting for Mavis to say anything else, the call ended, which gave her even more assurance that her mother was up to something. She wanted to ask her several questions, but she knew too well that if she speaks more than necessary and when not spoken to, she feared that they might just abandon her again.
When she entered the master’s bedroom, the first thing that caught her attention was the small calendar on the table just near the bed. The 24th was encircled with a red pen, reminding her of the upcoming celebration of the 5th year of her marriage.
“I should just focus on arranging this event,” she muttered to herself with the hope that she would come to temporarily forget about her illness and simply enjoy her usual life.
She spent the whole afternoon laying out the plans for their anniversary that she ended up not noticing how the time ticked by. She only snapped out from her concentration when her phone rang. Seeing the caller, a smile was drawn on her face.
Upon answering, she said, “Jackson! Have you arrived in the city already?”
“Wow… I did not expect to be greeted with such enthusiasm. And to answer your question… yes, I just actually arrived in my apartment.” Jackson, a model and Mavis’ close friend, paused for a while because he immediately knew that around this time of the year, Mavis would be busy doing something. “Are you going to prepare another party for your husband?”
Mavis could very well distinguish the hint of disappointment in Jackson’s voice but she simply chose to ignore it.
“Well… it’s our anniversary so I am going to prepare for it since he is busy with work.”
“Mavis, you know that work is just an excuse for him. Maybe it is time that you accept the fact that no matter what you do, you will never be able to win his heart.”
Mavis could only clench her fist and bite her lower lip because Jackson’s words were nothing but the truth. It was the truth that she still could not bring herself to believe in.
Jackson sighed. “I am sorry for being too harsh on you, Mave. If you ever need help, I am just one call away.”
“I know and thank you for the offer.”
After that phone call, Mavis headed to the bathroom to wash up and get changed. Just after she finished, she went downstairs and found Grayson in the dining room. She sat on the chair just across from him and the two started eating without saying another word. Mavis badly wanted to speak but she just could not find the right timing.
“I was told that you went to the hospital today. Are you not feeling well?” he finally asked, though he never spared her a single glance.
Mavis shook her head. “I just went to have myself checked to make sure that I am in good shape.”
Grayson simply nodded and another deafening silence followed after that short conversation. After a while, Mavis noticed that her husband was already close to finishing his dinner and if she missed her timing to ask him that one question, she might not just be able to ask him in the future.
She tightened her hold on her fork to gather some courage before lifting her gaze on him.
“I… I was just thinking…” She gulped and grew even more anxious when she met his cold stare. “W-What do you think about having a child now? I mean… we are already on our fifth year of marriage and I think I am ready to be a mo-”
“No.” His voice was so piercingly cold that it made Mavis feel like she was shot right on the chest with an arrow made of ice.
“W-Why?”
“You are not ready to be a mother, Mavis. And for the nth time, I do not want to become a father. I have so many things to do right now and having a child will only add up to more responsibilities. Besides…”
“Besides… what?”
Grayson put down his glass of wine and directly stared at Mavis.
“Nothing. Just finish your food.” He stood from his seat and walked away from the dining hall. But before he totally left Mavis alone, he stopped. “And do not bring this topic back in our future conversation. My answer will always be the same and nothing in this world will change it.”
Mavis already expected his answer to be that way since those were the things she got from him ever since she brought up wanting a baby. However, even though she wanted to convince herself that she got used to it, she could still feel her heart being wrenched. Touching her belly, she could only quietly apologize to her baby because of its father’s rejection.
That night, the couple may have slept in one bed, yet they acted like strangers forced to share that spacious room. Neither of them spoke a single word and simply exchanged quick glances that seemed to speak a lot but they chose to not say anything at all. The very next morning when Mavis woke up, she was all alone in that room once more.
Burying the event that happened the other night at the back of her mind, she gathered her remaining enthusiasm back and started to make the proper calls and people she needed to set-up the party for their anniversary. Just as always, she lost track of time while working only to be disrupted when an unexpected guest showed up.
“Wow, you truly seem to be going all out for your wedding anniversary,” the newcomer commented while looking around.
Even with her back turned on her, Mavis could already tell who it was just by her voice. She gulped and slowly turned on her heels while wishing so bad that the person she had in mind was not the person who actually came.
But upon seeing her, her body tensed.
“V-Venice… you’re home!”
Despite trying to sound more happy and excited in seeing her sister after almost five years of being apart, it was still obvious that her voice trembled. She wanted to go and hug her but her feet seemed to have rooted themselves into the ground.
“Oh, come on, Mavis.” Venice rolled her eyes. “There is no need to pretend that you are happy to see me. It is not like we are trying to hide from everyone that we do not get along.”
Mavis chose not to comment on that statement because it would simply lead to nothing but trouble.
“I am happy to see that you have recovered well from your injuries. Would you like to have some tea first?”
Venice accepted the offer, not because she wanted to hang out with her adoptive and annoying sister, but for the sole reason that she had come to give her an important heads-up.
As Mavis poured some tea for her sister in the garden, Venice could not help but look around the mansion with a contented smile plastered on her face.
“I like this place,” she commented.
“You can always come for a visit. I don’t mind.”
Venice chuckled at Mavis’ words while shaking her head. She looked at her as if she just said the most ridiculous thing that could ever happen.
“I won’t be visiting,” she stated. “The next time I step foot in this mansion, I will be the wife of Grayson.”
Mavis did not know how to respond to that. She had no idea if her sister was simply joking or if she was actually being serious. Either way, the situation made her feel uneasy and uncomfortable. However, her silence and surprised look simply amused Venice even more than she imagined.
“Oh, gods. Didn’t Grayson tell you?”
“Tell me what?”
Venice leaned closer to her while still wearing her smile.
“That he is going to divorce you.” She laughed. “Well, it is not really surprising, Mavis. I mean… I am supposed to be the one he was to marry five years ago if only I did not get into that accident and fell into a coma for four years. And I know that you are very much aware that between us two… I am the one he truly loves.”
After that sudden visit, Mavis was barely able to focus on her work. She was thrown into disarray of anxiousness, fear, and panic that she ended up dismissing the workers earlier than she originally planned. As the day came to an end, she felt on edge while waiting for Grayson to return home.
She was scared.
“What if he won’t come home anymore? What if he truly leaves me? What if he chooses Venice over me now that she has returned?” Those questions endlessly circled in her mind in a loop she could not run away from.
After hours of waiting, Mavis heard the car stop by the entrance. She rushed towards the window and got showered with so much relief upon seeing Grayson stepping out from his car. Somehow, some of the burden was lifted off of her so she waited for him patiently in the living room.
“It’s already late. Why are you not yet asleep?” Grayson asked upon seeing her.
“I could not sleep so I decided to wait for you. So… how’s work?” she asked.
Grayson knew something was up with her so instead of answering her question, he questioned her back.
“Do you want to tell me something? If yes, then tell me now before I get too busy.”
Mavis fidgeted on her seat as she tried to gather and organize her thoughts. However, even before she could think about the first thing she wanted to say and utter a single word, her husband let out a sigh.
“If you have nothing to say, then I have something to tell you.”
As if she could read his thoughts, Mavis’ mind immediately went blank upon looking into his eyes. She hated how they looked. She despised the look of pity and decisiveness in his pair of eyes because they simply confirmed her fear.
Grayson took out some documents from his work case and slid it on the table to let Mavis look at them.
“Let’s get a divorce, Mavis.”
With tears filling her eyes, she responded, “But I am pregnant, Grayson. I am weeks pregnant with your child… our child.”
Grayson stared at Mavis with wide eyes, obviously surprised at the sudden confession of his wife. Seeing the serious looks in her eyes, he wavered and thought that she must be telling the truth. However, he still managed to compose himself within a few seconds.“If you are saying this to postpone or not to sign our divorce, then it won’t work. Instead of dwelling in this failure of a marriage, we should part ways,” he said.“But I am pregnant. Do you think I just went to the hospital for nothing? Do you think I would suddenly bring up the topic about having a child out of nowhere despite hearing you say that you do not want one? Grayson… p-please.”Mavis could no longer stop herself from crying. It crossed her mind that she may look like some desperate bitch that very moment but it did not stop her from opening up. In a long time, this would be the only time she got the courage to tell what she truly felt towards her husband. She added, “I-I know that you are supposed to marry my sist
After receiving that piece of good news, Mavis was able to spend the rest of the day forgetting the problems she had to carry around her. However, just after she got off work and was already in the car, the driver with her immediately handed her some tissue with a worried look.“Madam, your nose is bleeding,” he commented with a hint of panic in his voice. “Tilt your head backwards for now and I will bring you to the hospital as soon as possible.”Mavis clenched her teeth as she wiped off the blood. Leaning back on her seat, she replied, “There is no need to go to the hospital. I have some medicine at home so let’s just head back to the mansion.”The driver was about to protest but he received a stern look from Mavis, forcing him to simply nod his head and follow her instructions. All throughout the ride, they were quiet unlike before that Mavis would be vocal, telling stories and whatnot. However, with her current condition and the situation that Grayson decided to put themselves int
“We talked about this, Venice,” Grayson said with a whisper, hugging Venice back and assuring her that he won't go back on his promise of marrying her.Mavis could not bring herself to watch any longer. She may be the wife, but at that moment, it made her feel like she was the third party… the one who ruined their almost perfect relationship. She headed to the plane first and settled on their assigned seats. While waiting for Grayson, she called her friend, Jackson.“What's up? I just got told that you took another week off,” Jackson stated. “Is something wrong?”“No.” She smiled with a mixture of bitterness. “We are heading to our honeymoon.”A moment of silence ruled over them."A honeymoon?" Jackson clarified just in case he misheard her."Yes," Mavis replied, her hand clenched as the image of Grayson hugging Venice crossed her mind. "Grayson and I are finally going to our honeymoon.""What changed?" he asked.Since it was something out of the blue, Jackson immediately sensed that
The next morning, Mavis was able to wake up earlier than planned. Just next to her was Grayson, still asleep and there seemed to be signs of him waking up at any moment. He actually kept his promise and did the deed only once so that alone was a small surprise for her. She shifted in her position and kissed him on the cheek, something she was not able to do for the past five years. She left the bed and took her bag with her to the kitchen. She secretly took in some of her prescribed medicine so the symptoms of her illness would not show as much as possible during the entire week of their honeymoon. After doing so, she started to prepare some light breakfast for the two of them. Not long after, she felt Grayson's arms around her waist."Good morning, amore," he greeted in a whisper."Just in time for breakfast, honey," Mavis replied as calmly as she could, but her blushing face still showed how this sudden change still affected her.Whil
Flabbergasted would be an understatement to describe how Mavis felt upon hearing her very own husband tell her such a thing. After he left her all alone without any calls, Grayson still had the guts to act like he did nothing wrong to her."Are you telling me, your wife, to move to the bedroom so my sister could occupy our bedroom? Are you listening to yourself right now?" she snapped."I do not want to argue right now, Mavis. Your things are already moved into the guest room anyway. If you need anything, just use my card," her husband replied before walking past her. "I have to head back to the company."Before he could reach the door, Mavis rushed towards him and grabbed his arm. He forced him to face her."What about our deal? Grayson, you promised me! You promised me that for two months, you would treat me like your wife-""That deal is already void, Mavis. Forget about it and just think carefully what you want as an alimony," he said, cutting
Mavis locked herself in one of the cubicles in the washroom, holding her chest with both hands. She still could feel how hard her heart was thumping as if it wanted to jump out of her chest at that very moment. It was not like she was scared that she angered Grayson, but it was her body belatedly reacting after showing such a brave front. As she recalled the words she said, a sense of guilt slowly shrouded her. Holding her belly, she let out a sigh."Your mother is selfish, isn't she?" she muttered, talking to her unborn child. "She just does not know when to let go of your father."At that moment, her marriage of five years came flashing back. It was loveless. Empty. Fragile. What was worse than that was the fact that no matter how hard she tried, nothing had changed. She suppressed a sob. She shut her eyes tight and took several deep breaths to hold back her tears. She wanted to be brave, not just for her sake, but for her baby as well."It
The very next day, Mavis did her usual routine and left the apartment. In the blink of an eye, a crowd of reporters came and surrounded her. Flashes of cameras made her wince, but what caught her off-guard was the very first question she heard from a reporter."Mavis Charter, when did you divorce Grayson Briar?" she asked before almost shoving her microphone on Mavis' face."What are your thoughts on your sister's upcoming wedding with your ex-husband?" another reporter asked. Those questions baffled her because they were speaking as if she and Grayson had already parted ways."And is it true that you were the person behind your sister's accident five years ago?"Before she could speak another single word, a man wearing a hooded jacket, a mask, and a cap swooped into the crowd, carried Mavis over his shoulder and ran away from the nosy reporters. They managed to get away after 10 minutes of trying to lose their pursuers. When Jackson put Mavi
Mavis woke up earlier than usual that day. Even though her scheduled meeting with Hestia Fiore was in the afternoon, her nerves were already on edge and keeping her on her toes. At any moment, she might just burst out of anxiousness. Her bed was littered with only a few dresses and none of them really appealed to her. She felt like the dresses she brought with her were not good enough to make a good impression on the best designer. She then shifted her gaze to the wall clock."Nine o'clock... Around this time, Grayson wouldn't be at home," she muttered to herself. She grabbed her coat and headed to the door. "Might as well go and get more clothes."Taking a cab, she reached the house and carefully observed first if there were any people there. Upon making sure that no one else was around, she stepped out of the cab and got inside. The house looked pretty much the same when she left, except for the mountain of boxes on the corner. Her guess? They were Venice's. Biting her lower lip, s
"W-What condition?" Mavis stuttered as her heart pounded against her chest.Even though Maximillian had not spoken yet, a shiver made her hair stand on their ends as if warning her that she was entering a trap."Let's make our engagement public," he responded without a hint of jest in his tone of voice.Mavis choked on her food in no time since she never once thought that he would ask something so huge like that. She immediately grabbed the glass of water being handed to her and drank almost half of it. When she got a grip of herself, she glared at Maximillian."Are you out of your mind?" she half-shouted. "I... I can barely remember who you are and the people around me yet you are asking such a thing? How heartless can you be?"The mafia boss's expression did not change. Neither did his mind waver despite Mavis's valid point. He set down his knife and fork before looking her straight in the eyes."That is the very reason I want our relationship to be public. I do not want anyone else
Grayson's kiss was possessive. His arm snaked around her waist, pulling her closer towards him and feeling her warmth that he seemed to have been hungry for. With his other hand, he held the back of her neck to deepen the kiss, however, Hestia pulled away. Pain tugged at her heart and disgust started to boil at the pit of her stomach. "We... We should not be doing this," she muttered, putting her hand over his chest to push him away."You're right. My apologies."After saying those words, Grayson turned his back on her and strutted out of the gazebo, leaving her all by herself. He ran his fingers over his hair with a frustrated sigh upon realizing what he had done. He already divorced her and was now preparing to marry the woman who saved him and who was supposedly his bride years ago, but he hated himself for having contradicting feelings. He could only remind himself to get his senses together so as not to make another mistake that he might regret later on.Not to mention, he did n
Hestia sat on the side while enjoying her glass of champagne. Her eyes scanned the room and she pretty much could name every businessmen who attended the party. Heaving a sigh, she could only wait for Mrs. Charter's next move since she was surely to play Cupid that evening. It was probably to make sure that Hestia won't try to get Grayson back from Venice and keep her occupied until the wedding.Shifting her gaze to the right side of the room, just two tables away from her was the group where Venice and Grayson were. According to the information Hestia gathered, they were the elite friends of the up-and-coming bride who visited from overseas."Oh, Mavis... Don't just sit there and watch everyone get along," Mrs. Charter said as she approached Hestia with a rather exaggerated smile.Along with her was a man, probably in his early 30s. He stood at almost six feet with his hair slicked back and only a few strands fell on his forehead. The moment their gazes met, the man smiled and nodded
Early in the morning, Hestia was already awake to prepare for her interview at the Star Magazine. Wearing a simple blue dress with a ribbon tied behind her revealing back, she paired it with two-inch high heels. She grabbed her small bag and headed downstairs, where she found Venice and Grayson surrounded by several bags and luggage. Before any of them could speak, Mrs. Charter came in and greeted them with a kiss on the cheek. "Mavis, dear. It's still early in the morning. Where are you headed to?" Mrs. Charter asked. "If your errand isn't that important, then you should cancel it for now and help your sister unpack.""Unpack?" Hestia questioned since she thought that Venice just packed her stuff and was more than ready to leave the family home. But it seemed like it was the total opposite."Yes. Since it is just a matter of time before their wedding, she decided to live here because she wanted to reconcile with you. Isn't that much better so once she gets married, you two would st
"You really are shameless," Venice hissed. "Stop being desperate and leave me and Grayson alone!"Hestia looked at her with wide eyes. Within a few seconds, her eyes teared up."I... I did not do anything," she said before a tear finally escaped her eye. "Venice!" Mrs. Charter's voice filled the room as she stomped her way towards the two. She pulled Venice's hand and forced her to keep her distance from Hestia. "What kind of attitude is this, Venice? Your sister has finally come home after three years of being missing, yet this is what you do?"Venice scoffed at the sudden change of her mother. She looked at her while pointing at Hestia, who was still looking down and wiping away her tears."Really, Mom? You are taking her side?" She let out a forced laugh. "Are you forgetting that she posted that article blaming me for the death of her baby and her disappearance? Mom, why are you suddenly welcoming her into our home?!""I am not siding with anyone here," Mrs. Charter said with a fi
"No!" Hestia insisted as she held onto her chair. "I do not want to go home just yet! I wanna drink! I wanna go all-out!""Enough already. I'm driving you back to your house," Grayson said before turning to Noah. "Let's meet up some other time. I will call you."After saying that, he managed to force Hestia to let go of the chair. He immediately carried her over his shoulder despite her attempts to get away from him. Reaching the parking lot, he had her occupy the front seat and put on her seatbelt. Just when he was about to move away from her, Hestia leaned against his shoulder."What did I do?" she asked. Her voice sounded like it would break at any moment. "Why did you leave me, Grayson? Did I do something wrong?""No... You did nothing wrong, Mavis."After he said those words, Hestia did not respond or move. It was only that time did Grayson realize that she had been knocked out so he carefully adjusted her seat so she would be more comfortable. It took them only several minutes t
Grayson was done preparing dinner and it puzzled him when Venice still did not come downstairs. Usually, she would be in the kitchen with him, watching him cook and prepare dinner. Just when he was about to head to her room, he received a message from Noah, his friend and the private investigator he hired to look into Hestia. "I don't know if you already saw it, but you should take a look at this." Along with the message, there was a link attached. Grayson clicked on it and it immediately led him to the anonymous that was still being feasted upon by the public. Reading through it, Venice was the very first person who crossed his mind. It probably had reached his fiance so he rushed to her room and, indeed, he saw her all wrapped in her thick blanket. Her small sniffles reached her ears. "I... I did not do it," she mumbled. "Why are you blaming me?" She repeated those words like she was chanting a spell. Grayson sat on the edge of the bed.
Maximillian was confused since he had no idea who this Karylle or Kyler was. Even then, he still kept himself together and squeezed Mavis' hand."Hes... Who are they?" he questioned before lightly shaking his head. "More importantly, are you okay?""Karylle is the babysitter of my son, Kyler," Mavis replied as she took her hand away from Maximillian's touch. "And... I am not Hestia. I am Mavis."Before the mafia boss could speak, the doctor entered the room and checked on Mavis. The nurse with him started to put ointment on the cigarette burns on her skin to lessen the chances of it scarring. Meanwhile, Maximillian stood and led the doctor outside the room."You said before that Hestia's CT scan came out okay. Are you sure about that?" he questioned."Yes, sir. Here it is." The doctor handed him a copy of the CT scan. "Everything looks okay. There is no bleeding, fracture, or any kind of abnormalities so there is no need to worry about it."Maximillian stared at the doctor with a cold

Viewer's discretion is advised. For some reason, Grayson felt something off with Hestia."What kind of favor is it?" he asked."Maybe you should get inside first." Hestia opened the door for him to enter. "It's raining."When the two of them settled in the living room, the first thing that Grayson noticed was the wedding dress displayed on the side. "You still have the blank check I gave you, right?" he asked, shifting his gaze to Hestia who just prepared him some snacks. She sat on the chair across from him and smiled."No," she replied, earning a confused look from Grayson. "I threw it away since that dress will never be for sale.""I see. As for the favor you mentioned before, what is it?"Hestia held her mug of chocolate drink with both of her hands. She stared at it for some time."When Mrs. Charter visited me the other day at the hospital, she showed me the DNA test result between me and her other daughter, Mavis C
