Alaric clenched his jaw as he stubbed out his cigarette. He then mirrored Emerald's stance, placing his hands on the table and leaning in closer.

"You seem quite concerned about my son. So why not consider my proposal? James likes you. If you become his mother, he'd be happy. It's a win-win for all of us," he said as if it were the most natural suggestion.

They stared at each other in silence. Emerald was at a loss for words, her mind momentarily blank. Their gaze only broke when a sudden crash echoed through the house, the sound of porcelain shattering.

"James!"

Worried about James's fragile mental state, even with his recent improvements, Emerald instinctively reacted. She quickly stood up but forgot she was only wearing slippers. Her foot caught on the edge of the sofa, causing her to fall hard to the floor.

With a loud thud, Emerald's knees hit the cold, hard tiles, sending a sharp, intense pain through her body.

"Hey, are you okay?" Alaric asked, concern evident in his voice as

Standing by the terrace, Emerald poured herself a glass of red wine, already knowing why her mother had suddenly called."Did you see the news about Ethan's engagement?" Her mother's voice was filled with disappointment and frustration."Yeah, I saw it," Emerald replied lazily, sipping her wine."Ethan is just a useless jerk to his family, but that little witch from the Valentine family still managed to snatch him away. It's really embarrassing that you didn't do anything. You're really useless!" Her mother's voice was firm and laced with anger.Emerald winced slightly at the harsh words, feeling the sting of her mother's disappointment. She gripped the glass tighter, trying to block out the familiar feeling of inadequacy that always seemed to accompany conversations with her mother.Emerald didn't say anything. She set her phone aside, putting it on speaker, and continued sipping her red wine as the sound of her mother's cursing filled the room. Sometimes she wondered if she was trul

Emerald immediately held back and bit her lip to endure the pain. Her pink lip bled, and she could taste the blood. This was what she hated most about getting injured-the treatment. The additional pain from the medicine or creams was unbearable for her, and even though she had been drinking, she still felt every bit of the sting. The troubled look on her face reminded Alaric of the nights when she lay beneath him, clinging to his waist and begging him to be gentle. He suppressed the intense desire that surged within him and softened his touch considerably."You've always been so loud, Miss Greene," Alaric whispered teasingly, making sure Emerald heard him.Emerald's forehead creased when she heard that, but she ignored it. All she wanted now was for him to leave. They couldn't stay in the same room alone because Emerald knew she might give in-especially since she was drunk! The cold ointment gradually warmed under the heat of his palm, and his rough hand gently m

Emerald recalled the first day she met Alaric, when he had saved her. The man had been dripping wet, his short black hair neatly styled, his eyebrows raised, and his strong arms had supported her soft body. He exuded a potent, irresistible aura. Ethan had always told her she was a boring woman, but Alaric had awakened something in her that made her feel physically satisfied even without love.As the alcohol clouded her judgment, she found herself embracing Alaric, inviting him with boldness. The man took advantage of the moment, his kiss now gentle, guiding her hands around his muscular waist. With the soft sofa beneath her and the hard, warm man in front, her body was overwhelmed with emotions."You want me too, right?" Alaric's voice was sexy and enticing, whispering directly into her ear, deliberately pushing her to give in.Emerald was no longer sure if it was the alcohol or her own desires driving her, but she didn't protest. She wanted Alaric even more than he w

Emerald's expression hardened further, her disgust evident. "I'm sorry, but I don't have a habit of recycling trash. Besides, your twelve minutes can't satisfy me."Ethan's eyes widened in shock and disbelief. He seemed to be grappling with the harshness of her words, unable to comprehend the insult from someone he had always perceived as gentle and kind."What did you say?" His voice was now laced with anger and threat.Emerald's gaze remained unyielding, her cold stare reflecting her final decision.Emerald's bold declaration cut through the tension in the doorway, her words deliberately aimed to sting and assert her newfound confidence. She wasn't interested in revisiting past grievances or allowing Ethan to invade her space any longer."I said I'm already taken. He's wild and hot. He can satisfy me for more than an hour. Sometimes it even lasts all night. Can you even do that? No, right?" Emerald's voice was firm, her challenge clear.Ethan laughed

So, this is all Emerald could think of.She stood on tiptoes and spoke into the man's ear with an ambiguous and sultry tone, "Don't worry. Next time, I'll sleep with you as much as you want, and I'll make sure Mr. Corrigan returns home having a great time."Emerald had no idea how her words affected Alaric. His eyes turned cold and deep. Suddenly, his hold on her waist loosened, and he let her go."I'll just wait for you then, Miss Greene," Alaric said calmly and turned away from her.He quietly retrieved his coat and put it on. Before leaving, he turned back and gently stroked her cheek."Damn, Emerald. You know how hard it is for me, but I'm respecting your decision. I'm looking forward to your promise," Alaric stated with a dangerous look in his eyes. His fingertips were hot, and the rough texture of his touch scraped against her cheek, causing a slight sting.Emerald realized he was angry and couldn't help but feel guilty. It was something Emerald thought was perfectly normal to say. She recalled the previous times she'd reached out, taking the initiative to invite him out several times that month, only to be met with silence. She had assumed Alaric was no longer interested and had probably blocked her number altogether. But then, she was startled to receive a voice message from him at three in the morning."Come down," Alaric's voice was both tired and irresistibly magnetic. "I'm downstairs in your garage."Without a second thought, Emerald slipped into her nightgown and went downstairs. From a distance, she saw an off-road vehicle parked in a shadowy corner, with a man's muscular arms resting on the lowered window. The glowing end of his cigarette flickered in the darkness, and as he noticed her approach, he stubbed it out.The vehicle, a black off-road model modified to be larger than a Range Rover, was covered in mud and dust-reflective of its owner. As the door opened, before Emera

"You're stuttering, your breath is hitching, and you're still saying you don't want it, huh?"There was a faint scent of cedar on Alaric's body, filling the cab with a woody aroma that felt almost like an aphrodisiac. As he trailed his lips slowly down her neck, goosebumps erupted wherever the warmth touched her.Emerald arched her body, her vision blurring, her mind conflicted between rejection and the undeniable welcome of his touch. It felt as if her body had a mind of its own, gradually surrendering to his advances. His large hand stroked along her shirt, and Emerald could no longer hold back. She gasped."Wait... Stop..." Emerald was breathless, trying to catch her breath.A few seconds of silence stretched between them. As they both caught their breath, Emerald's stomach growled loudly. Her face flushed deeply when Alaric looked at her in surprise."Are you hungry? Haven't you eaten anything yet?" He asked, clearly taken aback.Embarrassed, Emeral

"Usually when Mr. Corrigan hosts a banquet, the first and second floors are used for entertainment. The third floor is reserved for him and his friends during intimate parties or gatherings. The fifth floor is Mr. Corrigan's private area. No outsiders have ever entered."It became clear that Alaric was indeed the elusive figure behind the scenes. The servant swiped an elevator card and pressed the button for the fifth floor, implying that Emerald was considered more than just an outsider. This sense of unwelcome familiarity made Emerald uneasy. Regardless of Alaric's high status, she had no intention of engaging with him beyond their previous encounters. Her experiences with her own mother-being the mistress of her father-had left her wary. She did not want to find herself in a similar situation.Even as a child, Emerald knew she wasn't born out of love. She was simply the result of a mistake made by two people who had betrayed others. The principal’s face turned pale. He hadn’t expected Emerald to respond so decisively."Teacher Greene, we just need an explanation from you. Why are you resigning?" he stammered.Emerald pulled out her resignation letter from her bag, her expression unshaken."I’ve been here a year, and you know exactly who I am. Whether you want to exclude me or ridicule me, I couldn’t care less. But what I do care about is that I don’t need this job, and I don’t want my salary or bonus for this month. Thank you for your concern. This is the end for me. We have a long road ahead, and we will never meet again.""Teacher Greene, don’t leave! We still have things to discuss..." the principal pleaded.Emerald saw through his act—he wasn’t really trying to let her go. He was just looking to leverage her departure for personal gain, using her resignation as a bargaining chip to secure a better position for himself. But Emerald had never taken someone like him seriously.Ariza, who had been so confident mo

On the screen, all Emerald revealed was her chin and red lips. Slowly, the tip of her tongue traced her lips, her voice soft and alluring."Aric, do you want to see more?"Alaric couldn’t quite understand where this girl had picked up such things. His pulse quickened, a rush of excitement coursing through him that felt even more intense than if she were right in front of him.He found himself whispering in a low voice, "I want to..."The last few times he’d seen Emerald, it always seemed like she showed up under strange circumstances. For instance, during the last high-level meeting, she’d made a remark about having "one foot in each boat." And now, these older men were still pretending to be scoundrels, toying with the emotions of younger girls. The rumors about him being in two places in one night had spread wildly, and somehow, even in the bathroom, he overheard the cleaning lady gossiping about it.The gossip was growing wilder, but it didn’t bother him much. When they left the alley, Anastacia bought two candied haws—one for Emerald and one for herself. That’s when Emerald finally understood why Anastacia looked so youthful without makeup. There was an effortless charm about her, something most people didn’t have. After dropping Emerald off at Jiaoyuan, Anastacia leaned against the car door, looking reluctant. "Sweetheart, I have something I need to take care of, so I have to go. Please, take care of yourself."For a moment, Emerald felt what it was like to be truly cared for. She felt a slight pang of reluctance to say goodbye. But she understood that, just like Alaric, Anastacia had her own things to attend to.So she didn’t ask her to stay. "Okay, aunt, have a safe trip."Anastacia looked at her, and after a long sigh, said, "You don’t always have to be so good, you know. Just remember, it doesn’t matter what anyone else says about you and that brat. Especially with the Corrigan family... don’t listen to a word from them, especially wi

The stinging pain radiated through Emerald’s left ear. It felt as if an old wound had been torn open again. Her hearing on that side faded, and a warm liquid began to trickle down. When she raised her hand to touch it, she saw blood smeared on her palm.A sharp female voice suddenly cut through the tense air. “What did you just do to our family?!”Emerald stared at her father’s mouth as it opened and closed, his angry words blurring into nothingness. Her mind drifted to that summer day—when she’d been happily eating an ice cream cone, only to have Eula slap her across the face. The sharp pain had pierced her ear, and her nose had bled, drop by drop, onto the sweltering pavement. The cicadas buzzed freely in the midsummer trees, oblivious to her pain. Now, her father’s furious expression overlapped with Eula’s in her memory, their cruel postures mirroring each other perfectly.Back then, her ear had been perforated, but with swift treatment, her hearing had recovered over time.Today,

She called her "Mom" so naturally, as if they had known each other for years, with no awkwardness at all.But Emerald still felt a slight discomfort in her chest, unable to voice it. She nodded obediently. "Okay."Anastacia, beaming with happiness, patted her cheek. "Oh, you're such a good girl. How is it that my daughter-in-law is so wonderful!"Emerald stared at Anastacia, lost in thought. She realized that her own mother had never offered her praise. No matter what Emerald did, her efforts were met with harsh words. But when someone truly cares for you, even if you do nothing, they will think you're wonderful. At first, Emerald felt a little embarrassed, but those negative emotions quickly faded. In Anastacia's eyes, she saw genuine love and care, as if she were her own child.Anastacia didn't bring along bodyguards or drivers when she went out, but there was a sleek black G-Wagon parked downstairs.Anastacia waved at Emerald. Emerald looked into his dark, apologetic eyes, her heart aching. She reached up, gently brushing her fingers across his cheek. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, her voice breaking as she sobbed, "No... I’m just grateful that you chose me. Aric, please come back soon... I’ll be waiting for you at home..."Alaric whispered softly, his lips brushing her hair, "Good.""And no injuries," she added, her voice trembling."Okay," he promised, his hand caressing her cheek one last time before he carefully led her back to the room, covering her with a quilt. He gently stroked her soft cheek with his fingers, holding her close as if he never wanted to let go."Little Moon, I'll be back soon, and I'll bring you a gift. Sleep well." He leaned in and kissed Emerald gently on the forehead. That night, Emerald fell asleep alone in the large bed in the penthouse. She must have been so tired after the previous night that she slept in until noon. "Then, who are their parents?""They were the children of a good friend of mine. He died unexpectedly, and his wife passed away shortly after giving birth. So, I raised the children as my own.""I see." Emerald reached out and poked the scar on his chest. "Then, have you ever..."The man leaned in, his warm breath grazing her ear. "What about it?"They had just finished being intimate, and while Alaric had been gentle with her, he was still unsatisfied.Emerald's voice dropped to a whisper, her fingers brushing across his bare chest. "Other women."People are like that. At first, they just want a roof over their heads, food to eat, and everything they need. But then, they become more and more greedy, thinking about other things.Alaric gently nibbled on her earlobe. "Baby, that night three months ago, didn’t you notice how nervous I was?"He had hidden it so well, acting as calm as an experienced man, that Emerald thought she had met someone rough around the edges. But it turned out,

What started as a soft and delicate kiss grew deeper, their breaths intertwining and growing uneven.Emerald held his face, unwilling to part from him, her fingers tracing his sharp features. His usually composed fox-like eyes were now brimming with affection, his gaze tender yet burning. Her voice, sweet and laced with urgency, escaped her lips, “Aric…”Alaric lowered his eyes, his gaze falling upon her petite figure beside him.The white dress clung to her, accentuating her porcelain-like skin. Against it, the faint blush on her cheeks seemed even more alluring, like the soft glow of dawn. His hand moved gently, caressing her cheek with infinite care. His voice was low and soothing as he murmured, “Take your time. I don’t want to hurt you.”He knew better than anyone how delicate she was. It had been so long since he’d touched her, and in the past, he’d always held himself back. But tonight, his restraint was slipping.Even so, Emerald’s impatience was unmistakable. Her longing matc

From now on, she needs to be more mindful. Alaric clearly loved planning surprises, and it seemed like she hadn’t been as considerate as she should have been. What Emerald didn’t realize was that, to Alaric, she was like the bright moon in the sky—so distant and unattainable. The mere fact that she could lower her gaze to look at him was a blessing he’d earned over centuries of patience. All he wanted from her was one thing: to live.He would take care of everything else. After a while, Emerald was freshened up, and she had almost rubbed her skin raw in the process. She even put on a facial mask, hoping to recover from the tears she shed earlier and ensure her complexion looked better.Through the window, the Penthouse Garden was peaceful, with high natural vegetation surrounding it. The air was filled with the sounds of insects and frogs chirping in the night. In the distance, thousands of lanterns lit up the city, casting an ethereal glow.
