I woke up to see myself wrapped in Daniel’s arms. Although he was a stranger, everything felt so right being with him.
As I watched him sleep, I picked up my phone and saw it was 3:02am and I knew I had to head back to the mansion. I stood up, packed my things and gave Daniel a final glance. “It’s a pity I don’t get to see you again,” I whispered. “I can’t put my father’s safety in jeopardy by not abiding to this marriage.” I continued. After a last glance, I took off into the night. Thankfully for me I saw a taxi who was able to drive me to the estate. Throughout the ride, I kept on reminiscing on the amazing night I had spent with Daniel. I had never been satisfied by a man to this extent in my life. I picked up my phone and opened a picture of my father and squeezed my phone tightly. “All will be well daddy,” I muttered as I stared at the road through the taxi window. In no time the taxi driver parked the car at a corner. “We have arrived at your destination ma’am,” He said as he turned around on his seat to look at me. “Oh sure thank you. Have it,” I said as I handed him a five dollar bill. Immediately I got out of the car and snuck back into the house. The security guard was friendly enough to let me pass through the gates, although I had to pay him to keep my going out a secret. As I entered the living room, I heard Matthew rounding up from the study. He was probably done with sleeping with that lady and was ready to go to bed. As I carefully tiptoed on the stairs, Matthew’s voice cut through the silent room. “And where are you just coming from?” Matthew asked with a stern voice and his arms crossed. “I uhm, I came downstairs to ask if you weren’t coming to bed,” I replied with a fake smile. “Really?” He replied with doubt all over his tone. “Yeah.” “So why are you on your way upstairs not downstairs to come and meet me?” He asked as he walked towards me and stood tall and intimidating. “I- I- I heard you rounding up so I thought it was pointless so I decided to go back to the bedroom,” I replied, shivers moving round my spine as he placed his hand on my shoulder. “Thanks for being caring Jane. I have a feeling that you and I will make a lovely couple,” He said with a smile then grabbed my arm and proceeded to walk upstairs. As we both walked into the bedroom, all I could think of was how I had successfully snuck out of the house without being caught by Matthew. I told myself that I couldn’t go on dangerous trips like that as long as my father remained indebted to this man. I had to be a faithful and loving wife, atleast that was the life I was thrown into. As we both settled into the comfortable sheets of the bed, I closed my eyes and hoped for a better tomorrow. * * * It had been a week since my arrival at the Vanderbilt’s mansion and in all honesty Matthew was a nice man. He always wanted to make sure I was happy. It was almost as if he was deeply in love with me. He changed my entire wardrobe and took me to a salon for a total makeover. Rather than my messy bun that I had always kept my hair in, my hair was now let down and had wavy curls. I looked totally different. I looked like a Vanderbilt now. Any lady who could be opportune to my current life would be so happy, but I wasn’t. For the past one week, all I could think about was my passionate night with Daniel, the stranger from the bar. As I sat in the living room, reading this romance book, all I could think about was Daniel and I being the main characters. I let out an exhausted sigh and Matthew noticed my sad mood. “Why do you look so sad?” He asked sternly with a pinch of concern in his voice. “I’m just bored, nothing serious,” I replied with a smile. “Well, you’re in luck. Mother’s birthday is in a week and she is hosting a big party,” Matthew said as he flipped the page of the Forbes under 30 magazine that he was reading. “Your mother is coming here?” I asked with a bit of fear written on my face. “Of course. She and some family members. I can finally introduce as my wife,” He continued. I felt scared a bit because I had heard about the famous Madam Hildegard, Matthew’s mum, from the staff. They mostly said she was ruthless and strict. Their family was too complex for me so I thought about how I would hide myself when the day of the party comes. “Did you hear me?” Matthew asked, cutting through my trance. “Oh sorry my mind wasn’t there. What did you say?” I asked again. “Don’t bother. How about we go to bed now?” He asked as he stood up and stretched his hand to hold mine. “Alright let’s go,” I replied as I closed my novel, joined my hands with his and stood up. We both left the living room and got to our bedroom. I took off my clothes and put on my robe. Matthew walked up to me and held my waist and stared deeply into my eyes. “I really love you Jane,” He confessed as he rubbed my hair. “You married me to get back at my dad, I don’t think that is love,” I replied, looking to the side to avoid eye contact. “That’s what you think. I have loved you from the moment I set my eyes on you when you came to drop off your father’s lunch at the office last month,” He said. “You’ve seen me before?” I asked, with my eyes widened from shock. “Of course. From that moment I wanted you to be mine and finally you’re mine. Well not totally yet,” He continued. “What do you mean by not totally?” I asked, looking confused. “This…” He replied and kissed me immediately. I didn’t reciprocate the kiss, because I knew I did not love him. His kiss just threw my memory back to Daniel. I eventually accepted the fact that I would never see Daniel again, so it’s best I fall in love with Matthew and lived my life. I began to kiss Matthew back and we both lay on the bed. Matthew gently took off my robe and stared into my eyes. “You’re beautiful,” He smiled and continued kissing me. And just like that I gave myself to Matthew. Tonight would be the last time that I would think of Daniel. From now on, he was just a stranger I met at a bar.The day had finally come. Madam Hildegard’s birthday party. I was definitely nervous but I wanted this long awaited day to pass. “Honey, I got you a gift,” Matthew said as he walked into our room. “Really, what is it?” I asked with a smile as I got up from our bed. All of a sudden he brought out a box and opened it, revealing the most pretty diamond necklace that I had ever seen. “Aww Matthew thank you,” I said as I threw my arms around him for a hug. Our relationship took a drastic change ever since the night that we had sex. He got my dad a nice apartment, kept on gifting me and constantly reassuring me about his love for me. His approach to get me to be his wife was indeed awful, but he spent his days in our marriage proving he loved me. Everything was going so great for us that I had partially forgotten about him cheating on me. “All set,” He said as clipped the hook of the necklace around me. “You look splendid darling,” He said as he spun me around admiring
My heart stopped when Daniel spoke those words: "This is Victoria Sinclair. She's my girlfriend." I could feel the air being sucked out of the room, as if everyone was just as shocked as I was. There was a long, awkward pause where nobody spoke, and I could see Madam Hildegard's eyes widening with surprise. Even Matthew, who was usually calm and composed, looked momentarily stunned. Then, just as quickly as the silence had fallen, the room burst into a chorus of congratulations."How wonderful!" Madam Hildegard exclaimed, clapping her hands together. Her voice was loud and cheerful, but I could tell she was sizing Victoria up with her sharp, calculating gaze.Victoria smiled sweetly, though I couldn’t help but notice the way she clung to Daniel's arm a little too tightly, like she was trying to stake her claim. She had the kind of beauty that could easily make a woman like me feel insecure—tall, slim, with curves in all the right places, and a mane of thick, glossy black hair that fel
I stared at Victoria for a moment, her words echoing in my mind: “You should really consider watching your back.” I clenched my fists at my sides, trying to suppress the surge of anger bubbling up inside me. But I couldn’t hold back anymore.“Who the hell do you think you are?” I snapped, my voice trembling with rage. “You have no right to tell me what I can or cannot do. This isn’t some game where you get to make the rules.”Victoria turned back to face me, her lips curling into a wicked smile. “Oh, darling,” she said, her tone dripping with condescension, “I’m not telling you what to do. I’m giving you a warning. A little heads-up, if you will. I know how this family operates, and trust me, they don’t take kindly to women like you who think they can weasel their way into their good graces.”Her words felt like a slap across the face, but I refused to let her see how much they hurt. Instead, I lifted my chin defiantly. “That’s where you’re wrong,” I said through gritted teeth. “I’m n
I glanced over at Daniel, my heart still racing from the whirlwind of emotions I’d experienced tonight. His presence was oddly comforting, yet there was an unspoken tension between us that hung in the air.“How’s Madam Hildegard?” I asked softly, trying to mask my anxiety.Daniel let out a sigh of relief. “She’s fine. It was just a little scare. The doctors said she’ll be okay with some rest.”I closed my eyes for a moment, letting out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. “Thank God,” I said, my voice full of gratitude. I looked up at him, still feeling a lingering sense of unease. “But you can’t be in my marital room alone with me, Daniel.”He raised an eyebrow, a hint of confusion crossing his face. “Jane, I’m not here for what you think. I came to check on you and make sure everything is alright.”I felt a pang of guilt at his words. It wasn’t like I had suspected him of anything other than concern, but the situation had me on edge. “I wasn’t planning on telling anyone about w
Jordan barely had time to blink before Matthew's fist collided with his jaw. The sound of the punch echoed through the hospital room, and for a split second, everything went silent. My heart skipped a beat as Jordan stumbled back, eyes flashing with anger."You son of a—!" Jordan growled as he regained his balance, ready to lunge at Matthew. But before he could throw a punch, Daniel leapt between them, his hands pushing both men apart. "Enough!" Daniel barked, his voice ringing with authority. "This isn’t the time or the place for this.”I stood there, frozen, as the tension between the men crackled in the air. Matthew's chest heaved with anger, his face flushed red. Jordan, despite his calm exterior earlier, now looked ready to fight. I could feel the panic rising inside me as I tried to figure out what to do.“Both of you, stop this right now!” Madam Hildegard’s voice cut through the chaos. Her eyes were blazing with fury as she looked between her sons and her lover. “I love Jordan,
A shocked silence fell over the room. You could have heard a pin drop. For a few seconds, no one said anything, their eyes wide with disbelief. I glanced around the table, taking in their reactions.Madam’s face lit up with surprise and excitement. Matthew looked stunned but then broke into a wide smile. Victoria’s expression was unreadable, but I could see the gears turning in her mind.As the room burst into applause and cheers, Matthew stood up from his seat, beaming with pride. He pulled me into a tight embrace. He leaned down, pressing a kiss to my cheek, and then he whispered in my ear, so softly that no one else could hear, “You’ve got a lot of explaining to do, Jane.”My heart skipped a beat, and I swallowed hard, forcing a smile as I nodded. “I know,” I whispered back, my voice trembling slightly.Madam’s voice rang out over the chatter, full of joy. “An heir to the Vanderbilt dynasty! This is wonderful news! We must celebrate properly!”The room buzzed with excitement, eve
“Dad, I don’t understand,” I stammered as I stood there looking at my old father who had just blurted out some unbelievable news. “Darling please understand that I didn’t mean to hurt you,” He replied as he held my hand. “You don’t need to bother yourself,” He continued. Tears began to fill my eyes as I thought about the trouble my dad had gotten himself into. “What exactly did you steal,” I said, as I wiped the tear drop that had just rolled down my face. “I didn’t steal anything but they’re accusing me of stealing some money at the company,” He said while he sat on the couch. “A-A-And how much do you think it is?” I asked stammeringly. I knew it would be a heavy amount but I was scared of how much it would be. “A million dollars honey,” He replied and sighed. “W-Well, I know what to do. We must look for a loan shark to lend us the money,” I said as I walked up to my father to sit beside him on the couch. He grabbed my hand and placed it on his and faced me. “Honey
I found myself in front of a bar close to the mansion. I thought about how I actually needed a drink especially after the long day I had just had. I couldn’t wait to feel the buzz of the alcohol in me. I watched the
